Robert H. Reedy

Robert Hurley Reedy, 83, of Richlands, died June 30, 2004 peacefully at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Grant Hutchinson and India Stevenson Reedy.

He was a retired coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Josephine Allen Reedy; one daughter, Barbara Ann Reedy; and one son, William "Kilroy" Reedy and an infant son.

Survivors: daughters, Margaret Reedy Damron and Dorothy Stanley Jones, both of Richlands; granddaughters, Tammie Damron McGlothlin, Pamela Stanley Justus, Yolonda Rife and Kimberly Stanley; grandsons, Robert Damron, Donald Damron and Shawn Reedy; sisters, Irene White of Westminster, MD, Bernice Lane of Glen Burnie, MD; brothers, William (Bill) Reedy of Rural Retreat, Bud Reedy of Baltimore, MD, Wanda Reedy and wife, Alice, and Lester Reedy, all of Jewell Ridge; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted July 3 at 1 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Bill Keen officiating.

Burial followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Harvel C. Robinette

Harvel Conley Robinette, 88, of Swords Creek, died July 5, 2004 in a Claypool Hill retirement home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Swords Creek, he was the son of the late Harrison Robinette and Winnie Yates Robinette Whitt, both Swords Creek natives.

He had made his home in the Swords Creek area most of his life and was a retired coal miner. He was a member of UMWA Local #1760 Seaboard and attended the Raven Assembly of God Church in Raven.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lethea Ellen Robinette, one sister, one brother, one half sister, and one half brother.

Survivors: daughters, Phyllis Phillips and husband, Thurman, of Swords Creek, Peggy Hess of Bucyrus, OH; sons, Harry Robinette and wife, Charlotte, of Denver, NC, David Robinette and wife, Gayle, of Harmony, NC; brother, John Robinette of Mt. View, CA; half sisters, Lucy Webb of Raven, Juanita Holmes of Newport News, Audrey Noel of Walls, MS, Jean Miller of Richlands; half brother: Ershel Whitt of Newport News; 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted July 7 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Max Linkous, Rev. Barry Absher, and Rev. Ervin Justice officiating.

Interment will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Celia Ellen Smith

Celia Ellen Smith, 76, of North Tazewell, died June 29, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Clinton and Maggie Baldwin Brown.

She had made her home at North Tazewell for the past 32 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was also a loving foster mother to many children. She was a home health provider and an aide with Tazewell Social Services. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. She was a member of Calvary Assembly and was a devout Christian.

She was the widow of the late Rev. Berlin Smith and in addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death two sons, Franklin Delano Smith and Ronald Berlin Smith; one daughter-in-law, Virginia Smith; two grandsons, Greg Smith and Daniel Baker; and one granddaughter, Dawn Louise Smith.

Survivors: daughters, Mrs. Edward ‘Doris’ Baker of Rocky Mount, Mrs. Thomas ‘Brenda’ Stevens and Mrs. Donald ‘Barbara’ Bullard, both of Ocala, FL, Mrs. Jimmy ‘Dovie’ Via of Growley, TX, Mrs. Don ‘Patsy’ Baldwin of Pounding Mill, Mrs. James ‘Donnie’ Kiser of Georgetown, FL, Mrs. Lee ‘Nancy’ Bellomy of Bluewell, WV, Mrs. James ‘ Peggy’ Abel of Bastian; sons, Jack Smith and wife, Nada, of Mason, WV, Dennis ‘Buck’ Smith and wife, Jennifer, of Roanoke, Noah Clinton Smith and wife, Sheila Smith, of Florida, Berlin ‘Matt’ Smith and wife, Danita, of Baptist Valley; sisters, Lomia Nalley of Thomasville, NC, Emma Moore of Alabama; 38 grandchildren; and 49 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted July 4 at 1 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Charles Rose and Rev. Troy Bartley officiating.

Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Eula Mae "Mitchell" Stevenson

Eula Mae "Mitchell" Stevenson, 73, of Cedar Bluff, was carried from this life of suffering by Angels to be with her Lord on July 5, 2004.

She was a loyal and dedicated Christian and active member of the Bandy Freewill Baptist Church. She was a very caring and loving mother and grandmother, and loved by all. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Nancy Baldwin Mitchell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Henry E. Stevenson; two sons, Wayne L. Stevenson and Steve A. Stevenson; one brother, Dennis Mitchell; and two sisters, Lorraine Sparks Stevenson and Thelma Christian.

Survivors: daughters, Carolyn Ann Vance of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Tim (Melissa) Lowe of Swords Creek; sons, Michael Stevenson, Danny Stevenson and wife, Leanna, and Terry Stevenson and wife, Donna, all of Cedar Bluff; granddaughter and special caregiver, Sarah Vance; grandchildren, Kevin Beavers, Jarad Stevenson, David Stevenson, Jennifer Stevenson, Joshua Starling, Brandon Stevenson, Travis Stevenson, Zachary Stevenson and Charity Stevenson; great grandchildren, Jenna Stevenson and Erin Beavers; sister, Minnie Wright of Ocala, FL; brothers, Floyd Mitchell, Jr. and wife, Marie, of Bandy, Ken Mitchell and wife, Louella, of Cedar Bluff; special niece and nephew, Nancy Sparks Starling and Danny Starling who Eula was like a second Mom to; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted July 8 at 2 p.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Sam Altizer, Rev. Danny Starling, Rev. Lawrence Hayes and Brother Marvin Nipper officiating.

Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. July 7 at the funeral home.

John B. Tizen

John Burgess Tizen, 85, of Claypool Hill, died June 25, 2004 at Clinch Valley Medical Center from a long illness.

Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Pete and Gussie Tizen.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil and Fred Tizen.

He was a graduate of Richlands High School and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Richlands. He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired coal operator. He was a former manager of the Richlands Airport and the owner of the Merry T. Stables in Tazewell, where he owned and showed American Saddlebreds and Walking horses. He was also a licensed pilot and a commissioned Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors: wife, Madeline, of 63 years; son, John G. Tizen of Wardell; daughter, Mary Lawson and husband, Doug, of Claypool Hill; and granddaughters, Natalie DeVries and husband, Garth, of Annapolis, MD, Lesley Lawson of Chicago, IL, and Lauren Lawson of Knoxville, TN; and great-granddaughter, Madeline DeVries.

At his request, he was cremated.

A memorial service to celebrate his life was held July 1 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Richlands with Rev. David Brannock officiating.

Memorial gifts may be made to the American Cancer Society Ride for Life Horse Show, 670 Cresswood Dr., Richlands, VA 24641.

Owens Funeral Service & Cremation Services in Lebanon was in charge of arrangements.

Earl "Pushbutton" Wilson

Earl R. "Pushbutton" Wilson, 66, of the College Ridge Mobile Estates of Wardell, died July 2, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Roscoe and Ellen Clark Wilson, both Buchanan County natives.

He had made his home in the Tazewell County area for the past 36 years and was a retired miner from Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation at Vansant.

He was a former captain and paramedic for the Richlands Rescue Squad and was a graduate of Garden Creek High School Class of 1956. He was of the Holiness faith and a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Survivors: wife, Uva Lowe Wilson; daughter, Tina Wilson Beavers and husband, Donnie, of Wardell; son, Robert R. Wilson and wife, Tamra, of Pounding Mill; sisters, Katherine Arrington of Bristol, VA, Pauline Jackson of Rowe, Susie Hill of Craig County; brothers, Paul Wilson of Walkertown, NC, Rev. Frank Wilson of Mississippi, Rev. Jerry Wilson of Garden Creek; grandchildren, Cullen Compton, Danyelle Wilson, and Raylee Wilson; step-grandchildren, Kelle Beavers and Brent Beavers; special aunt and uncle, Opal and Robert Hagy; and special caregiver, Paula Slate.

The funeral was conducted July 4 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Jerry Harman, Rev. Jerry Wilson, and Evangelist Bob Smith officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Betty A. Woods

Betty A. Martin Woods, 71, of Delaware, OH, died at home July 2, 2004.

Born in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Inez (Chapman) Martin.

She moved to Delaware, OH, in 1998 from Columbus and was a retired office manager with United Transportation Union. Following retirement, she worked as a waitress for Mike & Lou’s in Columbus, where she enjoyed many friendships. She was very independent and enjoyed trying her luck at the slot machines. Betty spent many hours helping at PJ’s Restaurant in Sunbury, where she made many friends.

Survivors: daughters, Linda Wilson, Joyce Wilson Fetherolf and Barbara Lowe, all of Columbus, Cathe (Cliff) Forbes of Snellville, GA; son, Mike (Brandy) Woods of Louisville, KY; grandchildren Bill, Joe, John, Julie, Stacey and Stephan; ten great-grandchildren; brother, Douglas M. (Alma) Martin of Honaker; and best friend, Mary Grubb and family of Delaware.

The funeral was conducted July 6 at 11 a.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury with Rev. Carol Weiss officiating.

Interment followed in Sunbury Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Grady, 561 W. Central Ave., Delaware, OH 43015.

Lacy S. Burkett

Lacy Sherman Burkett, 97, of Bluefield, VA, died June 20, 2004 in a Bluefield hospital.

Born in Bluefield, VA, he was a son of the late George Erastus Burkett and Louvennie Tibbs Burkett.

He retired from the Norfolk & Western Railroad, was a former home builder and formerly owned and operated Burkett’s Exxon in West Graham. He helped establish Dudley Memorial Mortuary when it was started in 1952. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Thompson Burkett; his second wife, Elizabeth Lucas Burkett; six brothers; and four sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Survivors: daughter, Frances Vernon and husband, Tom, of Lakeland, FL; son, Jimmy Burkett and wife, Carole, of Mulberry, FL; grandchildren, Terry Ellis and husband, Woody, Alan Burkett and wife, Cathy; three great-grandchildren; several caregivers including, Joyce Shelley; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were conducted June 23 at 11 a.m. at the Maple Hill cemetery in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Larry Murphy officiating.

Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, VA, was in charge of arrangements.

Minnie M. Conley

Minnie Martin Conley, daughter of the late W.S. "Hoosh" Martin and Catherine "Sissy" Webb Martin, died June 22, 2004 at the Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington, KY.

She graduated from Maytown High School and Berea College. She taught home economics for two years and spent most of her life managing Conley’s Kentucky Food Store at Garrett, KY.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Oliver and Charlie Martin; and three sisters, Golda Salyers, Lula Martin and Belva Martin.

Survivors: husband of 61 years, Judge Hollie Conley, of Eastern, KY; son, Hollie Martin Conley of New York City; daughters, Danise (Mark) White of Tazewell, Judelle Conley of Lexington, Melanie (Ron) Warfield of Gibson City, IL; grandchildren, Holly (Bo) Renes, Chad White, Rebecca White, Scott Warfield, Robb (Sheila) Warfield and Leah Warfield; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted June 25 at 10 a.m. from the Chapel of Hall Funeral Home at Martin, KY, with Roy Harlow officiating.

Burial followed in the Mima Conley cemetery at Hueysville, KY.

Imogene H. Corvin

Imogene Heffinger Corvin, 66, of Tip Top, died June 28 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell is in charge of arrangements.
