Jason Colby Brown
Jason Colby Brown, 21, of Rt. 3 (Gratton) Tazewell, died July 14, 2004 at North Tazewell.
Born in Tazewell, he was the son of Perry Duncan Brown of Rt. 1, Bastian, and Margie Estep Brown of Rt. 3, Tazewell.
He was a graduate of Tazewell High School, Class of 2000 and a graduate of Wytheville Community College, Class of 2002 as a Precision Machinist. He worked for Melvin Machine Shop at Gratton and for Acken Signs, Inc. at Bluefield, VA.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lawson and Ruby Estep, and his paternal grandfather, Archie Z. Brown.
Additional survivors: sister, Ashley Nichole Brown of Tazewell; brother, T.J. Thompson of Christiansburg; paternal grandmother, Nannie Katherine Brown of Gratton; aunts, Patricia Estep and Eva Estep; and uncles, Archie Z. Brown, Jr. and John W. Estep.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Pastor Maria Grimm officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Kermit G. Chaney
Kermit Grey Chaney, 80, of Grundy, died July 18, 2004, following an extended illness.
Born at Millard, KY, he was a son of the late Jeff and Myrtie Belcher Chaney.
He had been a resident of the Grundy area several years and was a retired coal miner. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Cleo Fife, Edith Harrison, Beatrice Childress and Imal Harvel; and two brothers, Cecil and Sonny Chaney.
Survivors: wife, Anna Farmer Chaney; son, Curtis E. (Pete) and wife, Karen Chaney of Pounding Mill; granddaughter, Victoria (Tori) Chaney of Pounding Mill; special niece, Miranda Steward of Big Rock; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 20 at 11 a.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howell Scott officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.

James "Bill" Cook
James William "Bill" Cook, 71, of Rowe, died July 13, 2004 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital.
Born in Russell County, he was a son of the late James Clovis and Nancy Victoria Arms Cook.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Jewell Smokeless Coal Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dellie Fay Cook July 6, 2003, one infant son, and one sister, Margaret Lester.
Survivors: daughter, Mrs. Jerry "Dean" Brown and Mrs. Ralph "Sue" Shortridge, all of Rowe; sons, Dempsey Street and wife, Tina, Larry Cook, Gary Cook and wife, Regina, Danny Cook and Tony Cook and wife, Sis, all of Rowe; sisters, Doris Musick of Honaker, Arbutus Compton of Roanoke, Elizabeth Clark and Ruth Knippenburg, both of Ohio; brother, Pete Cook of Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 16 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Junior Rife and Rev. John Godbey officiating.
Interment followed in the Street cemetery at Rowe.
Arbelia B. Gore
Arbelia B. Almond Nesselrodt Gore, 90, of Tazewell, formerly of Culpeper, died July 19, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born July 17, 1914 in Fauquier County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Adrian Almond and Teresa Pearl Jenkins Almond.
She had lived in the Tazewell area for the past ten years, first with her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Patsy Nesselrodt, then at Dogwood Estates and Heritage Hall Health Care. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles W. Nesselrodt, Sr.; her second husband, Albert B. Gore; one sister, Marylin V. De Hayes; two brothers, Earl Almond and Wayne Almond; and one grandson, William Bazzle, Jr.
Survivors: sons, Charles W. Nesselrodt, Jr. of Capron, George E. Neselrod and wife, Carolyn, of Hampton, Richard A. Nesselrodt of Clifton Forge, Roger E. Nesselrodt and wife, Patsy, of Bluefield, VA; daughter, Linda R. Bazzle and husband, William, of Haywood; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. July 21 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Johnny Elmore officiating.
Burial will follow at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 1 p.m. July 21.
Nancy B. Johnson
Nancy B. Wimmer Johnson, 89, of Tazewell, died July 14, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital following a short illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Dennis M. Wimmer and Samantha Harris Wimmer.
She was a member of the Tazewell Main Street United Methodist Church and belonged to the Auxiliary of American Legion Post #133 of Tazewell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carrington Johnson, and two brothers, James E. Wimmer and Fred M. Wimmer.
Survivors: daughter, Nancy Carol Sharp and husband, Roy, of Hillsville; son, Randall Johnson and wife, Mary, of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Paul Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, and Tabatha Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Bobby Jones, Sr.
Bobby Gene Jones, Sr., 64, of Cedar Bluff, died July 12, 2004 from injuries received from an automobile accident.
Born in Tazewell Co., he was the son of Lurie Wyatt Jones of Creston, NC, and the late Lerman Clifford Jones.
He was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1957 and was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.
Survivors: son, Bobby Jones, Jr. and wife, Angela, of Claypool Hill; daughters, Marsha Kaye and husband, Kevin, of Annadale, Vickie Jones Tummino of Burke; sister, Shirley Williams and husband, Ray, of High Point, NC; grandchildren, Ashleigh Kaye, Chelsea Kaye, Brittnee Jones and BJ Jones; and former wife, Donna Stevenson Jones of Tazewell.
The funeral was conducted July 16 at 11 a.m. in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Pastor Buddy Herald officiating.
Entombment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.
Jared M. Joyce
Jared Michael Joyce, 8, of the Clark's Valley section of Swords Creek, died July 13, 2004 in Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of Karen Lynn Joyce of the home.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and had just finished second grade at Givens Elementary School. He enjoyed outdoor activities, such as hunting and riding his ATV and many sports.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Estil L. Joyce and great-grandfather, Raymond C. Dye.
Survivors: parents, Karen Lynn Joyce and Les Barnes, both of Swords Creek; grandmother, Charlotte Joyce of Raven; uncle, Larry Wayne Joyce of Peoria, IL; great-grandmother, Dorothy Dye of Doran; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, classmates and friends.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Terry Eversole officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Loma D. Kennedy
Loma Darlene (Keene) Kennedy, 65, of New Oxford, PA, died July 13, 2004 at Hanover Hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Milton Keene and Goldie (Dye) Keene Stump Overstreet.
She attended Harvest Time Temple in Hanover and was employed by Conewago Valley School District as a student personnel assistant, nurse's assistant, classroom assistant and library assistant during the day. She was a certified nursing assistant doing private duty in home care overnight in the Gettysburg and Hanover areas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert O. Kennedy Jr., who died Aug. 4, 2000, to whom she was married
for 43 years, and one sister, Nancy Gillespie.
Survivors: sons, David A. Kennedy, Sr., Thomas D. Kennedy, Jeffrey D. Kennedy and Scott C. Kennedy, all of New Oxford, Robert E. Kennedy of Hanover; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Joanne Ingersoll of New Jersey, Shirley Keene of Ohio, Betty Swartz of Maryland, Della Burnette of Virginia, Judy Corcoran-Smith of Hanover; and brothers, Ursel Keene of West Virginia, Tommy Keene and Jack Keene, both of Richlands, Raymond Elswick of Cedar Bluff, Bill Keene of Florida, and Pat Stump and Mike Stump, both of Hanover.
The funeral was conducted July 17 at 2 p.m. at Feiser Funeral Home Inc. in New Oxford with her pastor, Rev. Fred Mummert officiating.
Burial followed in New Oxford cemetery.
Robert Meek Jr.
Robert Meek Jr., 98, a resident of King's Daughters' Community Health and Rehabilitation Center, of Staunton, formerly of Fishersville, died July 13, 2004 at the center.
He was born July 22, 1905, at Burkes Garden, to the late James Robert and Brenda (Groseclose) Meek.
He was a cattle farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Buchanan) Meek; one daughter, Mary Anneta Meek; two sisters, Dora Poole and Pansey Fuqua; and one brother, Truby Meek.
Survivors: son, R. Donald Meek of Culpeper, and one sister, Mildred Lineberry of Wytheville.
Services were conducted July 16 at 11 a.m. at Fishersville United Methodist Church.
Burial was at Augusta Memorial Park.
Reynolds Funeral Home in Waynesboro was in charge of arrangements.
Pearl E. Myer
Pearl Elizabeth Honaker Myer, 92, of Lucasville, OH, died July 6, 2004 at Heartland of Portsmouth.
Born in Lebanon, she was a daughter of the late Silas Burke Honaker and Visa Mae Miller Honaker Hess.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Sedan Baptist Church. For many years, she had been a leader in the 4-H Club, a member of the Northwest Extension Homemakers Club, a volunteer worker at Scioto Memorial Hospital's Information Desk and a Morgan Township Poll-worker for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Franklin Myer, to whom she was wed Aug. 29, 1930; one son, Johnny Raymond Myer; one granddaughter, Rachael Oien; one great-grandson, Daniel Shane Rachford; five sisters, Bess, Charmi, Mae, Grace and Mary Sue; six brothers, Fullen, Burke, Sam, Robert, Silas and Louis; two sons-in-law, Oakie Culp and Billy Richard Suthers; and one daughter-in-law, Shizuko Myer.
Survivors: son, William Donald (Jessie) Myer; daughters, Norma Jean Myer, Patricia Culp, Dorothy Suthers, Mildred (Leroy) Dailey; family friend, Paul Lute; grandchildren, Florence Odenweller, David Myer, Joyce Fence, Debbie DelBalcon, Connie Signoretti, Robert Holt, Tim Holt, Teresa Citrin, Rebecca Adkins, Barbara Koch, Jeannette Rachford, Bruce Culp, Roy Culp, Bea Shope, Sandra Oliver, Steven Suthers, Susan Douglas, Sheryl George, Carol Dailey, David Dailey and Dwight Dailey; 38 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Day of Baltimore, MD; brother, Lloyd Hess of Florida; and many, many friends.
The funeral was conducted July 10 at 11 a.m. at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville, OH, with Rev. Charles Wiltshire officiating.
Burial followed in Sunset Gardens in Wheelersburg, OH.
Joel R. Owens
Joel Ryan Owens, 22, of Pilgrim Knob, went to be with the Lord on July 16, 2004 in a Kingsport, TN, hospital from injuries received in a accident on July 11.
Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of Carl and Betty Mullins Owens.
He was of the Holiness Faith.
Additional survivors: brother Chadwick Owens and wife, Stephanie, of Big Rock; nieces, Catherine Justice and Sara Owens, both of Big Rock; nephew, Seth Owens of Big Rock; maternal grandfather, Ashby Mullins of Pilgrim Knob; maternal grandmother, Ethel Mullins of Tazewell; paternal grandparents, Roby and Josephine Owens of Honaker; great-grandmother, Linnie Mullins of Ieager, WV; and several aunts, uncles and a host of friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted July 19 at 11 a.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Troy Lester, Rev. Mike Altizer and Rev. Kenneth Alley officiating.
Burial followed in the Sonny Mullins cemetery at Compton Mountain.
