Bertie H. Dye
Bertie Helen Dye, 62, of Swords Creek, died Oct. 27, 2003 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Swords Creek, she was the daughter of the late Hobert L. and Mary Sue Griffith Miller.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the Worship Center in Swords Creek. She had been employed as a seamstress at several of the area sewing factories.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Dye, and one sister, Lois Ann Miller.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Jim Campbell of North Tazewell; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Vicky Dye of Rowe; grandsons, Keith Dye, Jeremiah Dye and Andrew Dye, all of Rowe; sisters, Betty Ruth Dye and Frances Brown, both of Swords Creek; brother, Mack Arthur Miller of Swords Creek; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev Ralph Bostic and Rev. David Perkins officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Helen Irene Horn
Helen Irene Horn, 80, of Whitewood, died Nov. 2, 2003 in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Oma Horn McKinney, both Buchanan County natives.
She had made her home in the Whitewood area all of her life and was a member of the Rosa Cole Church in Whitewood. She was a graduate of Whitewood High School Class of 1941.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Lee Horn and James Scott Horn; two grandsons, Larry Lloyd Horn and Kenneth Lee Moses; and two sisters, Ethel Altizer and Bonnie Woods.
Survivors: husband, Ezra (Silas) Horn; daughters, Joyce Moses and husband, Wayne, of Gladys, Darlene Coleman and husband, Mike, of Pounding Mill; sons, Gary Horn of Cedar Bluff, Clark Horn and wife, Judy, of Whitewood; sister, Dolly McCoy of Radford; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Troy Lester and Rev. Joe Gross officiating.
Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
Tom H. Matney
Tom H. Matney, 73, of Lebanon, formerly of Vansant, died Oct. 29, 2003, at a Kingsport, TN, hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Vansant, he was a son of the late Alva H. and Mary O. Scott Matney, both Buchanan County natives.
He was a life long resident of the Vansant area and was a member of the Vansant Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Carl L. Matney.
Survivors: sister, Ellen "Sis" Arrington of Vansant; and brothers, Ellis F. Matney, Paul G. Matney, and Frank K. Matney, all of Vansant, and Sonny C. Matney of Abingdon.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Evangelist Michael Trent and Pastor Phyllis Canter officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Terry D. McClanahan
Terry Dean McClanahan, 40, of Oakwood, died Oct. 28, 2003, following a short illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Barbara Looney McClanahan of Maxie and the late Lonnie Edgar McClanahan.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended the Regular Baptist Church. He was a disabled construction worker.
Additional survivors: wife, Patricia Ann Mitchum McClanahan of Oakwood; sons, Joshua Dean McClanahan and Michael Dean McClanahan, both of Oakwood; sisters, Brenda Vanover of Maxie, Linda Justus of Hurley, Donna McClanahan of Grundy; and brothers, Lonnie Brack McClanahan and Dennis McClanahan, both of Maxie, Billy McClanahan of Richlands, and Scotty McClanahan of Hurley.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church at Maxie with Elders Toy Looney, Roger Coleman, Howard Daniels and Mark Justice officiating.
Burial followed in the Deel cemetery on Bull Mountain near Harman.
Services were conducted Oct. 29 and 30 at 7 p.m. at the church.

Herman Mullins
Herman Mullins, 70, of Hillsville, formerly of Richlands, died Nov. 1, 2003 at his home.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Edward and Nanny VanDyke Mullins.
For several years, he was manager of the Sears Store in Richlands.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mullins.
Survivors: daughter, Susan Mullins of Dedham, MA; son, Harold Mullins of Johnson City, TN; sisters, Kathleen Casey of Venice, FL, Helen Blevins of Cedar Bluff, Rita Chambers of Crossville, TN, Carol Ann Davis of Raven; brother, Arthur Mullins of Danville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted Nov. 5 1 p.m. at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Chapel in Galax with Rev. Gene Strickland officiating.
Interment will follow in the Monta Vista cemetery.

Louie James Smith
Louie James Smith, 86, of Falls Mills, died Nov. 2, 2003 in Tazewell following a long illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late George R. and Mary Lawson Smith.
He was a member of the Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church and was retired from GTE with over 30 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Brenda N. Smith; four brothers, Melvin Cruey, Walker Smith, Bascom Smith, and Troy Smith; and four sisters, Carrie Smith, Katie Mutter, Cora Lee Smith, and Lois Smith.
Survivors: wife of fifty-six years, Beulah Irene Hall Smith; sons, Danny J. Smith and wife, Barbara, and Keith E. Smith and close family friend, Pamela Thompson, all of Princeton, WV, Larry A. Margaret D. Stokes
Margaret D. Stokes, 88, of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, died Nov. 1, 2003 in a Claypool Hill nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Powhatan, she was the daughter of the late Cheslea and Katherine Stapelkamp Dorset, both Powhatan natives.
She had made her home in the Chesapeake area most of her life prior to moving to Tazewell County in 1993. She was a retired school teacher and guidance counselor for 45 years at Great Bridge High School in Great Bridge. She was a graduate of Manchester District High School in Richmond and attended Harrisonburg State Teachers College and received her B.S. Degree from Richmond Professional Institute of William and Mary College.
She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of Appomattox and had been a member of the Virginia Alpha Delta Cappa since 1956.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester S. Stokes, six sisters, and four brothers.
Survivors: daughter, Hazel Wyatt and husband, Jerry, of Cedar Bluff; sisters, Miss Anne Dorset of Appomattox, Mrs. Irvin (Gerry) Walker of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Leslie Patton and husband, Michael, of Cedar Bluff, Rebecca Wyatt and fiancé, Jim Foringer, of Pittsburgh, PA, Emily Brooks and husband, Tony, of Maryville, TN; great-grandchildren, Megan Patton and James Patton; and special friends and caregivers, Stella Brewster and Rosie Vance.
Graveside services were conducted Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Riverside cemetery in Norfolk.

James W. VanDyke
James William VanDyke, 63, of Mavisdale, died Nov. 1, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Hurley and Lettie VanDyke.
He was a member of the Rowe Pentecostal Church and owner of Tri State Security Fence Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Doug VanDyke, and one sister, Dellie VanDyke.
Survivors: daughter, Lora Kennedy and husband, Robert, of Asheboro, NC; sons, Brian VanDyke and wife, Teresa, of Concord, NC, Jody VanDyke and wife, Cindy, of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Ronald VanDyke of Manassas, Hassell VanDyke of Honaker, Tommy VanDyke of Fredericksburg; sister, Nellie Coleman of Remmington; and four grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Ancil Childress officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.

Samuel G. Whitt, Jr.
Samuel G. Whitt, Jr., 85, of Steelesburg, died Oct. 27, 2003 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Bandy, he was a son of the late Samuel Graham and Dollie Nancy Christian, Whitt, Sr., both Tazewell County natives.
He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a long time businessman in the Richlands area. He was a former real estate and insurance agent associated with Richlands National Bank, a retired miner and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 6633 of Amonate.
He was a Disabled World War II U. S. Army Veteran, serving in the European Theatre and was a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell and the American Legion. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Lodge #260 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rites Bodies of Roanoke and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was also a member of the Steelesburg United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Burgess Whitt, September 22, 2003; one daughter, Judy Lynn Fogleman; one son, Rudy Glen Whitt; four sisters, Georgia Taylor, Lois Morris, Daisy Sharpe, and Dolly Warburton; and two brothers, Peyton Whitt and Howard Whitt.
Survivors: daughter, Joan Mash Booher and husband, William, of Cedar Bluff; son, Phillip Daniel Whitt and wife, Peggy of Winchester, KY; sister, Pauline Rice of Ft. Worth, TX; brother, Rudolph Whitt of Cedar Bluff; ten grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Stafford Compton and Rev. Max Linkous officiating.
Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Members of the Cedar Bluff Lodge #260 A.F. & A.M. conducted Masonic services Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
