Lantham H. Stacy
Lantham Howard Stacy, 71, of Route #1, Grundy, Wolford, died Nov. 27, 2003 at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Ellis Henry and Goldie Juanita Bandy Stacy.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Protestant faith. He was a disabled coal miner.
He was preceded in death by one son, Howard Junior Stacy, and one brother, Bobby Lee Stacy.
Survivors: wife, Nancy Jane Martin Stacy; daughters, Sandra Marie Dye of Mavisdale, Rebecca Jane Dye of Oakwood; sons, Timothy Henry Stacy and Ronald Allen Stacy, both of Grundy, Steven Matthew Stacy of Newport News; sisters, Beulah Doretta Kennedy of Elkton, MD, Orchid Marie Quick of Bluefield, VA; brothers, Curtis Ray Stacy of Florida, Millard G. Stacy of Elkton, Morris Stacy of Pounding Mill, Larry Stacy of Cedar Bluff, Dexter Stacy of Grundy; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at the Harland Blankenship cemetery on Coon Branch at Wolford with Evg. Bob Smith officiating.
Burial followed in the Harland Blankenship cemetery.
Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of arrangements.
Leon Sword
Leon Sword, 66, of Belfast, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 1, 2003.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Walter and Dona Vencill Sword.
He was an electrician and had done numerous jobs throughout Southwest Virginia. He was a member of the Belfast Methodist Church.
Survivors: wife, Betty Ann Sawyer Sword; daughter and son-in-law, Suzy and Henry Ray of Belfast; son, Jeff Sword of Belfast; granddaughter, Allie Ray; and two special cousins, Aleta Mercer and Polly Cox.
A graveside service will be conducted today at 11 a.m. at Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery.
The funeral was conducted Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. at Owens Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with Rev. Robert Layell and Rev. Peggy Dalton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Belfast Methodist Church or the Belfast–Rosedale Volunteer Fire Department.
Zona W. Willis
Zona Wallace Willis, 89, of Lebanon, died Nov. 26, 2003 in Lebanon.
Born in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late John Newton and Nancy Jessee Wallace.
She had live in the Abingdon and Lebanon areas for the past three years, moving from Richmond, where she lived for 40 years. She was a graduate of Honaker High School and a member of the Southminster Presbyterian Church in Richmond. She was employed at Holston Ordinance in Kingsport, TN, during World War II as Chief Chemist. She was loved by everyone whose lives she touched and was an angel whose job on this earth was done and had went back to heaven.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James "Buddy" Combs; second husband, retired Major Houston Page Willis; one son, Warren Fay Combs; three brothers, John Ozro Wallace, Newell Wallace and William Wallace; and two sisters, Marie Duncan and Eileen Wallace.
Survivors: sister, Lavona Perkins of Honaker; nieces, Sherrill Ludig of Hermann, MO, Sandra Bagamery of Beaver, PA, Elane Knight of Conover, NC, Joan Wallace of Hickory, NC; and nephews, John Wallace of White River Junction, VT, Steve Wallace of Conover, Mark Wallace and David Wallace, both of Hickory, NC, Greg Wallace of Jacksonville, FL, and Wayne Perkins of Honaker.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker.
Interment followed in Russell Memorial cemetery at Lebanon.
Mariam M. Wolford
Mariam McCrary Wolford, 86, of Bluefield, VA, died Nov. 27, 2003 at Westwood Nursing Home.
Born on Dec. 2, 1916 in Ivanhoe, she was the daughter of the late Harry Welbourne McCrary and Georgeanna Ratcliffe McCrary.
Her husband, James Robert Wolford, of Bluefield, VA, preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and served on the St. Mary’s Altar Guild, was a Life Member of the Bluefield Woman’s Club and served on the Children’s Temple Mission and Tazewell County Literacy Program.
Survivors: daughters, Anne W. and husband, Stephen M. Danko, of Bluefield, VA, Hope W. Butler and Elizabeth S. Wolford of Charleston, WV; sons, James W. Wolford and wife, Goldie of Rural Retreat, Robert P. Wolford and wife, Kathy, of Moneta; brother, George C. and wife, Judy McCrary, of Greensboro, NC; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; special friend and sister-in-law, Eleanor W. Kloetzly of Ritman, OH.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bluefield, VA, with the Reverend Russ Hatfield and the Reverend Daniel Brady of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church officiating.
Burial followed at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Bluewell, WV.

Curtis P. Casey
Curtis Patton Casey, 77, of the Long Branch section of Swords Creek, died Nov. 16, 2003 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1925 in Swords Creek, he was a son of the late Albert "Bud" and Ocie Hale Casey.
A lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area, he was of the Holiness faith.
He was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Philippines during World War II. He was a life member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640, the DAV Chapter 31, Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 61, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Pocahontas and Rebekahs of Richlands.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Casey on Nov. 5, 2003; one son, Trudy Garland Casey; one daughter, Peggy Gaynelle Blankenship; and one brother, Charlie Casey.
Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Carlies and Debbie Casey and George Douglas and Barbara Casey, all of Swords Creek, Carson Eugene Casey of Claremont, NC; daughters and sons-in-law, Nila Genette and Thurman Bostic of Honaker, Mavis Lee and Ralph Wingler of Chapmansville, WV, Katie Juanita and David Osborne of Catawba, NC; sister, Louise Turner of Martinsville; half-brothers, Giles Hughes of Swords Creek, Douglas Casey, Alvin Casey and Norman Casey, all of Richlands; half-sisters, Barbara Casey and Mary Osborne, both of Raven; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Interment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.

Shelby J. Chaffins
Shelby Jean Stiltner Fuller Chaffins, 66, of Mavisdale, died Nov. 14, 2003 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
Born in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Stiltner and Maxie Davis Stiltner Thompson.
She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of Freedom Worship Church of God, Keen Mountain, and a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kermit Fuller, Dec. 2, 1996; one son, Kermit Eugene Fuller, Aug. 1966; and one sister, Joann Stiltner, Jan. 1998.
Survivors: her second husband, Eldon Kenneth Chaffins; daughters, Patsy Fuller of Auburn, IN, Barbara Fuller of Wardell, Angela Moore of Belfast, Tammy Fuller of Richlands, Miranda Dotson, of Mavisdale; sons, Thurman Lee Fuller of Grundy, Sherman Fuller of Raven, Larry Fuller of Auburn; sister, Lucille Chaffin of Mouth Card, KY; brother, Billy Stiltner of Las Vegas, NV; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Jim Hill and Evg. Michael Trent officiating.
Burial followed in Rose Hill cemetery at Big Hackney's Creek near Kentucky State Line.
A song service was held at the funeral home Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. and a regular service was held Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.
Elizabeth M. French
Elizabeth Marie French, 54, of Richlands, died Nov. 16, 2003 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.

Jerry T. Hager
Jerry Thomas Hager, 52, of Keen Mountain, died Nov. 12, 2003 at Clinch Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.
Born at Martin, KY, he was a son of Stella Dodd Hager of Oakwood and the late Kerman Odell Hager.
He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was of the Pentecostal Faith. He was a retired employee of Island Creek Coal Corp. Beatrice Mines. He was a graduate of Grundy High School and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. He served in the United States Army attaining the rank of Sergeant, serving in German in the Military Police, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Expert M-16 Rifleman. He was a member of John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion and DAV Chapter #59.
Survivors: wife of 24 years, Deborah Boyd Hager; daughter, Traci Eskridge of Manassas; son, Jerry Wayne Hager of Oakwood; sisters, Carol Matthews of Eastion, GA, Sandra Riggsby of Keen Mountain; brothers, Kerman Hager, Jr. and Ricky Hager, both of Oakwood, Terry Hager of Springfield; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Jody Breeding and Minister Randy Webb officiating.
Burial followed in Esau Rife cemetery on Keen Mountain.
Services were held Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
Marie E. Hagy
Marie Elzinia Hagy, 74, of Richlands, died Nov. 12, 2003 at her son's home in Trinity, NC, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Granville and Louise Cooper Riffe.
She was a member of the New Life Ministry.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James Keene; her second husband, James Hagy; one stepson, Harman L. Hagy; two brothers, Joseph Riffe and Walter Riffe; and five sisters, Maryland Rose, Lucy Cantrell, Rosie Bailey, Juanita Coleman and Thelma Cline.
Survivors: sons, James L. Keene of Cedar Bluff, Hubert Keene of Trinity; daughter, Delores A. Stilwell of Raven; brothers, Anthony Riffe of Clearfork, Willard Riffe of Jolo, WV; grandchildren, Jamie Hays, Kim Ratliff, Erika Shreve, Rosa Anna VanDyke, Johnny Stilwell, Becky Keen, James Stilwell, Antania Shaw and Hubert Keene, Jr.; step-grandson, Anthony L. Hagy; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. David Osborne officiating.
Burial followed in the Riffe cemetery at Pea Patch.
Frankie Boyd Hardy
Frankie Boyd Hardy, 50, of Richlands, died Nov. 10, 2003 at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of Holland Boyd Hardy of Akron, OH, and the late Vicie Marie Salyers Hardy Casey.
He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Ellis Daniel Casey.
Survivors in addition to his father, Holland Boyd Hardy and step-mother, Pauline Hardy: wife, Delores Ann Shortt Hardy; daughter, Kimberly Ann Hardy and husband, Joe Lester, of Richlands, sons, Scottie Daniel Hardy and wife, Melinda, of Doran, Michael Dewayne Keen of Jewell Ridge; and grandchildren, Courtney Nichole Lankford of the home, Destini Hope Lester of Richlands, and Tiffany Ann Hardy of Doran.
The funeral was conducted Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Clarence Brown and Rev. Dannie Short officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
