James R. Webb

James Robert Webb of Licking, MO, formerly of Raven, died Dec. 17, 2003 in a London, OH, hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Reece Henderson and Effie Griffith Webb, both Tazewell County natives.

He had spent most of his life in London, OH, and was a building contractor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Shannon Webb, Buford Webb and Avery "Jack" Webb; and two sisters, Georgia Christian and Ruby Boyd.

Survivors: daughter, Sherry; three sons, Jimmy, Dale and David Webb, all of London, OH; several grandchildren; sisters, Peggy Wells, and Beula and Glenn Rose, all of Richlands, Alice and Grady Owens of Swords Creek; brothers, Tom and Mildred Webb, of Roanoke, and Gratten and Jackie Webb of Raven; sisters-in-law, Edith Webb, Lucy Webb, and Maxine Webb; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The body was cremated in Columbus, OH.

James Lee Asbury

James Lee Asbury, 62, of Tazewell, died Dec. 7, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late Gus James Asbury and Beatrice Blair Bibey Asbury.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn Dye, and two brothers, Junior A.P. Asbury and Glen Gus Asbury.

Survivors: seven children; brothers, Edward William Asbury of Bluefield-Tazewell Road, Jimmy Rufus Asbury, Roy Asbury and wife, Georgia, and Earnest Asbury and wife, Mary Lou Asbury, all of Tazewell, Monroe Asbury and wife, Sylvia, of Knoxville, TN; sisters, Betty Gregory, Linda Asbury and Daniel Beavers, all of Tazewell, Dorothy Sparks and husband, Clarence, of North Tazewell; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Dash officiating.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill cemetery in Thompson Valley.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12 noon Dec. 10.

Lorraine S. Compton

Lorraine Stiltner Compton, 76, of the Bend of Slate area of Grundy, died Dec. 5, 2003 from injuries sustained in a fire at her home.

Born in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lerla Smith Stiltner.

She had been a resident of Buchanan County for 65 years. She was a member of Grundy Church of Christ and was a devoted wife, loving mother and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah Compton in 1977, and one infant son.

Survivors: daughter, Barbara Jean Compton of Grundy; and one son, Noah Compton Jr. of Grundy.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Tom Cooper and Evg. Michael Trent officiating.

Entombment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery at Richlands.

Services were conducted Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Linda L. Crabtree

Linda L. (Dye) Crabtree, 51, of Honaker died Dec. 4, 2003 at her home after a long illness.

Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of Claude and Reka Cole Dye of Jewell Ridge.

She was a devout Christian and a member of Bethany Baptist Church where she taught young adults in Sunday school.

Additional survivors: husband of 32 years, William Virgil Crabtree; her children, William Frost (Will) Crabtree and wife, Sarah, of Kannapolis, NC, Mary Katherine (Katie) Crabtree of the home; grandchildren, Hannah E. and Madison N. Crabtree of Kannapolis: sisters, Patricia Farmer and husband, Edward, and Carolyn Short and husband, Tom, all of Jewell Ridge, Denise Tolliver and husband, Jim, of Raven; and several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and in-laws.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Vonley Pruitt and the Rev. Ed Tiller officiating.

Entombment followed in the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum in Ketron Memorial Gardens.

Earnest J. Deel

Earnest James Deel, 28, of Richlands, formerly of Buchanan County, died Dec. 1, 2003 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands from a brief illness.

Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Lura Snell Deel of Ashboro, NC, and the late Willie Deel.

He had been a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was of the Church of Christ faith and a carpenter.

Survivors: wife, Beverly Janet Rife Deel; stepdaughter, Stephanie Bandy of Richlands; stepson, Cody Bandy of Richlands; sisters, Mildred Keene of Copperhill, TN, Patricia Vandyke, Sandra Farmer and Brenda Blankenship, all of Grundy, Ruth Coleman of Ashboro, Shirley Deel of Vansant, Rosetta Ratliff of Hurley; and brothers, William Deel of Vansant, and Eddie Deel of Grundy.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Roscoe Rife, Evg. Michael Trent and Minister Ronald Lee Lester officiating.

Burial followed in the Stiltner cemetery on Poplar Creek near Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 1, Rt. #2, Grundy.

Services were conducted Dec. 3 and 4 at the funeral home at 7 p.m.

Troy F. Dillman, Jr.

Troy F. Dillman, Jr., 76, of Marion, died Dec. 4, 2003 at his home.

Born in Smyth County, he was the son of the late Troy F. and Hattie Cassell Dillman.

He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II and the Korean War having served in the United States Army and was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kermit Dillman.

Survivors: wife, Ada Marie Vaught Dillman; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and David Britton of North Tazewell; granddaughter, Jennifer Britton of Bloomington, IN; sister, Thelma Romans of Marion; brother and sisters-in-law, Larry and Linda Dillman of Negaunee, MI, Sue Dillman of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Donna Hester and the Rev. Frank Bauman officiating.

Interment followed in the Mt. Carmel cemetery at Marion.

Eva M. "Dee" Hurt

Eva M. "Dee" Hurt, beloved wife of CDR. David A. Hurt, Jr., USN (Ret.) and beloved mother of four sons, David A. Hurt, III, of Potomac, MD; Douglas M. Hurt of Gaithersburg, MD; Donald J. Hurt of Alexandria, Dennis B. Hurt of Greenville, SC died Dec. 2, 2003.

Her passing followed a courageous 11 year battle against lung cancer.

A native of Pensacola, FL, prior to her marriage, she, subsequently, traveled extensively within the 50 states and in Europe.

Married for 53 years, she is survived by her husband, four sons, their wives, 12 grandchildren, and older sister, Rosa Lee O’Neal and nieces and nephews.

Prior to moving to Winter Springs, FL, in 1981, she had lived in Alexandria for 17 years and is well known in the Capital area.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Dec. 6 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Winter Springs.

Visitation hours were held Dec. 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Family Funeral Care in Oviedo, FL. She will be transferred to Arlington where a celebration of her life will be made with a mass Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Arlington. Visitation hours will be held Dec. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Joseph Gawlers Funeral Home in Washington, DC.

Interment will conclude Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Attn: Mike Mangan, 1400 S. Orange Ave., Orlando, FL 32806, American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, N. Canton, OH 44720 or the Hospice of the Comforter, 595 Montgomery Rd., Altamonte Springs, FL 32714.

Dovie M. Ianni

Dovie Marie Ianni, 81, of North Tazewell, died Dec. 1, 2003 at a Princeton, WV, hospital following a brief illness.

Born at Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Grat Smith and Rose Compton Smith.

She had made her home in Tazewell all her life. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She was a partner with her husband in Joe’s Drive-In. She was of the Church of God faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ianni, one daughter, Mary Akers, two sisters, and five brothers.

Survivors: daughter, Charlotte Ianni of North Tazewell; sisters, Frances Atwell of Richlands, Kay Renn of Greensboro, NC, Nance Nunley of North Tazewell; grandchildren, Joe Thompson, Tina Wright, Deanna Gravius and Becky Bryant; and great-grandchildren, Hance Haugen, Hannah Haugen, Mary Gravius, Josh Bryant and Jennifer Bryant.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Monte Elswick officiating.

Interment followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

David E. Johnson

David Eugene Johnson, 43, of the Hurley Bottom section of Slate Creek, Grundy, died Dec. 3, 2003 at the Buchanan General Hospital.

Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late Henry and Betty Doris Kelly Johnson.

He was of the Pentecostal faith, a chef and was a disabled strip mine general laborer.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Deedy Kelly; paternal grandfather, Allen Johnson; and paternal grandmother, Vada Ray Deel.

Survivors: wife, Jacqueline Stacy Johnson; son, Virgil Lee Stacy of Grundy; sisters, Mrs. Pete (Guyna) Day of Rock WV, Sherry Johnson and Mrs. Phillip (Kim) Kennedy, both of Compton Mountain, Mrs. Dusty (Wilma) Hagerman of Bradshaw, WV; nieces, Amber Rhinnon Wagner and Chantel Marie Kennedy, both of Compton Mountain, Stephanie Noel Day of Rock, WV, Brittany Paige Hagerman and Lakin Chantel Hagerman, both of Bradshaw; nephews, Warnie Pete Day and Jonathan Henry Day, both of Rock, Chadric Ryan Kennedy and Troy James Ward, both of Compton Mountain; maternal grandmother, Edna Kelly of Compton Mountain; and special friend, Eddie Day of Jewell Ridge.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Ward officiating.

Burial followed in the Mullins cemetery on Compton Mountain.

Services were conducted at the funeral home Dec. 6 and 7 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lorraine H. Lester

Lorraine Hamilton Lester, 63, of Pounding Mill, died Dec. 2, 2003 following a brief illness.

Born in Virgie, KY, she was the daughter of the late Freemon and Josephine Hill Hamilton.

She was of the Protestant faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jay Hamilton.

Survivors: children, Hobert Lester and wife, Connie, of Richlands, Sandy Lou Lester, Jetty Sue Lester, and Ricky Lester and wife, Beverly, all of Paintlick, James Lester and fiancée, Sandi, of Richlands, Lucille Lester Angles of Wardell; brothers, Tom Hamilton and Bob Hamilton, both of Pikeville, KY; sister, Edney Hamilton of Pikeville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted at 1 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Chapel of Love Church with Rev. Roger Lester officiating.

Burial was private.

Singleton Funeral Home in Cedar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.
