John D. Mabry Sr.

John Daniel Mabry Sr., 49, of Bishop, died Dec. 30, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital.

Born Dec. 7, 1954 in Tazewell, he was a son of Bea Mabry of Bishop and the late John Alfred Mabry.

Prior to his disability, he was a former coal miner and later was owner and operator of Mabry’s Car Barn Body Shop in Bishop.

Survivors: in addition to his mother, Bea Mabry with whom he made his home, include, sons, John Daniel Mabry II and wife, Krista, and Jackson Lee Mabry, all of Tazewell, Joseph Andrew Mabry of Radford; daughters, Jamie Renee’ Mabry of Bluefield, VA, Julia Nicole Mabry of Bristol, VA; sister, Sharron Taylor and husband, Wallace, of Pulaski; grandchildren, Joseph Tyler Mabry, Johnna Mabry, Jasmine Faith Mabry and Josiah Jordan; nephew, Wallace Scott Taylor of Radford; and niece, Shana Swecker of Dublin.

The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Barry Absher officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Pierce M. Maxwell

Pierce M. Maxwell, 70, of Whitewood, died Jan. 2, 2004 at a Bristol, TN hospital following an illness of several months.

Born at Whitewood, he was a son of the late Drayton and Josie Cole Maxwell, both Whitewood natives.

He had made his home in the Whitewood area his entire life and was a heavy equipment operator for N & V Coal Company and Rice O’Quinn. He was a U. S. Army veteran and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Maxwell, one son, Gregory Pierce Maxwell, five brothers, Raymond, Milfred, Harold, Bernard, and Robert Maxwell, and two nephews, Scott and Donald Maxwell.

Survivors: wife, Carol Wimmer Maxwell; daughters, Teresa Maxwell and husband, Lewis, Swarthout, Jr. of Bristol, VA, Shelia Cassity and husband, Jimmy, of Snellville, GA; son, Robert (Robbie) Maxwell and wife, Tara, of Jonesboro, TN; father-in-law, Joe Wimmer of Abingdon; sisters, Mrs. Elmer (Juanita) Tatum of Whitewood, Helen Drumheller of Richmond; brother, Lloyd Maxwell and wife, Irene, of Salem; grandchildren, Joshua Swarthout, Corey Swarthout, Kelsey Swarthout, Jamie Cassity, Sam Cassity, Ethan Cassity, Lily Maxwell, Pierce Maxwell, and Isaac Maxwell; sisters-in-law: Ruby Maxwell of Roanoke, Gay Maxwell of Whitewood, Mary Maxwell of Flint, MI, and Shelby Maxwell of Jewell Ridge; special sister-in-law, Peggy Cole of Whitewood; and special nieces, Abby, Amy, Adria, Amanda and Amanda Nagies.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Jimmie Cole and Rev. Ernest Cole officiating.

Interment followed in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery in Richlands.

Members of Casey-Short V.F.W. Post #9640 and Tazewell County Chapter #31 D.A.V. conducted military graveside rites.

Louie V. McGlothlin

Louie V. Sharp McGlothlin, 87, of Rowe, died Jan. 4, 2004 at her home.

Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Maggie Stamper Sharp.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and a member of the Fletcher’s Ridge Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde McGlothlin; one son, Rev. Billie McGlothlin Sr.; one son-in-law, Vermon S. Owens; one granddaughter, Beverly Owens; five brothers, Charles Andrew Sharp, Herbert Lee Sharp, Samuel F. Sharp, Henry C. Sharp and John W. Sharp; and two sisters, Nannie Mae Sharp Gross and Annie Bell Sharp Boyd.

Survivors: sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Davis and Mint McGlothlin of Honaker, James Perry and Cathy McGlothlin and Ronald Robert and Jeanette McGlothlin, all of Rowe; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Elmore of Indianapolis, IN, Violet and Raymond Talvis Daniels, Ilene and Paul Eakright and Lorraine and Edward Selleck, all of Wabash, IN, Rebecca and Terry Webb of Rowe; sisters, Helen Sharp Christian of Lebanon, Mattie Virginia Sharp Elswick of Vansant, Gladys V. Sharp White of Doran, Nola F. Sharp Gross of Swords Creek; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Regina Jackson and the Staff of Home Nursing Co. of Lebanon.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Troy Harris officiating.

Interment followed in the McGlothlin cemetery on Fletcher’s Ridge.

Donald Ray (Donnie) Mitchell

Donald Ray (Donnie) Mitchell, 41, of North Tazewell, died Jan. 3, 2004 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN.

Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Harry L. and Mary Katherine Angles Mitchell.

He was a 1980 graduate of Tazewell High School.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve Mitchell and Denny Mitchell, and one brother-in-law, Ronnie Robins.

Survivors: brothers, William C. Mitchell of North Tazewell, Jackie Mitchell and wife, Sarita, of Tazewell; sisters, Sue Rambo of Tazewell, Wanda Minton and husband, Randy, of Newton, NC, Trish Hall and husband, Eddie, and Doris Mitchell, all of North Tazewell; several nieces and nephews; and a special aunt, Juanita Herald.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.

Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.

James H. "Blue Tick" Robinette

James H. "Blue Tick" Robinette, 89, of Tazewell, died Dec. 30, 2003 at Westwood Center in Bluefield, VA.

Born at Pounding Mill, he was a son of the late Tom and Ella Rasnake Robinette.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Bell Pilkin Robinette; one son, James Robinette Jr.; two brothers, John Robinette and Joe Bill Robinette; and three sisters, Evelyn Laney, Margaret Robinette, and an infant sister.

Survivors: sons, Roger Robinette and Tommy Robinette, both of Tazewell; daughters, Evelyn Cox of Tazewell, Sue Burk of Norfolk; sister, Edna Pruett, of Maryland; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his special friends, Bill and Pansy Harman of Tazewell.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Jan. 2 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Canning officiating.

Burial followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Bonnie M. Sawyers

Bonnie Marie Williams Sawyers, 85, of Pounding Mill, died Jan. 4, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Caroline Snodgrass Williams, both Pike County, KY natives.

She had made her home in the Pounding Mill area for the past 50 years and was a member of the Cornerstone Church in Richlands.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Survivors: husband, Ernest Sawyers; daughter, Betty Rasnick and husband, Jim, of Steelesburg; sons, Billy Sawyers and wife, Iva, and Rev. Tex Sawyers and wife, Juanita, all of Richlands, Rick Sawyers and wife, Susan, of Tazewell; sister, Amalee Blankenship of Kapperston, WV; 11 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Ray Sawyers officiating.

Interment followed at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.

Virginia D. Spencer

Virginia Dare Spencer, 103, of Honaker died Jan. 3, 2004 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late N.F. and Elizabeth Dye Coleman.

She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Valley View Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Ed Spencer, and one daughter, Ethel Fields.

Survivors: daughter, Lola Johnson of Ohio; son, Hadvor Coleman of Honaker; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Claude Rose officiating.

Interment followed in the Hess cemetery at Swords Creek.

Tommy R. Whited

Tommy Robert Whited, 69, of Raven, died Dec. 28, 2003 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Felix and Elizabeth Hess Whited.

He was a lifelong resident of Raven. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Maggie Whited; his wife, Elizabeth Jane Dye Whited; one son, Larry Wayne Whited; two sisters, Polly Rose Whited and Sara Jane Gratin; five brothers, Andy Whited, Leo Whited, Glen Whited, Burkley Whited and Fuller Whited.

Survivors: daughters, Linda Sue Whited of Clarks Valley, Patricia Lynn Hill of Cedar Bluff, Beverly Ruth Shelton of Raven, Rebecca Ann Tucker of Swords Creek; sisters, Doris McGhee, Joyce Compton, Billy Wilson, Sally Gibson and Lucy Boyd, all of Raven; brothers, Walter Whited of Martinsville, Felix Gerome Whited of Doran, Willard Whited and Roger Whited, both of Raven, Darrell Whited and June Boyd of Swords Creek; four grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Graveside services were conducted Jan. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Richardson cemetery on Horton Ridge with Rev. Jimmy Richardson officiating.

Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Charles S. Wilcox

Charles S. Wilcox, 85, of Richlands, died Dec. 31, 2003 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Born in Todd, NC, he was a son of Arthur and Lillie Reece Wilcox.

He attended Calvary Temple and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict and was retired from General Motors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers, sisters and half brothers and half sisters.

Survivors: wife, Anna Johnson Wilcox; son Richard Wilcox of Richlands; daughter, Linda Tarrence of Richlands; brother, Lee Wilcox and wife, Etta, of Meadview; half-sister, Bli Goldberg of Meadview; grandson, Steve and wife, Monica Tarrence, of Phoenix, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted at 2 p.m. Jan. 3 in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill with the Rev. Grady McGlothlin officiating.

Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey Shortt V.F.W. Post #9640 and Tazewell County Chapter #31 D.A.V.

Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff was in charge of arrangements.

Ruby Iline Breeding

Ruby Iline Jackson Breeding, 84, of Davenport, died Dec. 19, 2003 in a Lebanon hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1919 in Rowe, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Ada Hess Jackson.

She had spent most of her life in the area and was a member of the Free Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Ruie Jackson, Ulysses Jackson, Marvin Jackson, Herbert Jackson and Jack Jackson; two sisters, Virginia Jackson and Phyllis Dotson; and one great-granddaughter, Krista Snead.

Survivors: husband of 64 years, Charlie Breeding; sons, Harold Dean Breeding and Charlie Breeding, Jr., both of the home, Eddie Breeding and wife, Edna Sue, of Lebanon; daughters, Joyce Mitchell and husband, Harold, of Council, Phyllis Statzer of Hansonville; sisters, Bernice Keene and husband, Arvil, of Dumfries, Pearl White of the Villages, FL; grandsons, Chris and Christine Presley and Preston and Crystal Breeding; granddaughters, Tenita Mitchell, Roberta and Kevin Willis, Tracy Clevinger and Shelley Breeding; great-grandsons, Lee Willis and Dustin Clevinger; great-granddaughters, Casey Snead, Sarah and Chris Outen, Krista Willis and Emma Clevinger; three step-great-grandchildren; great-great-grandson, Jaxon Outen; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Ancil Childress, Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating.

Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
