Walter "Jack" Howery
Walter Robert "Jack" Howery, 83, of Rt. 1 (Witten Valley) Tazewell, died Feb. 11, 2004 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Witten Valley, he was a son of the late Robert Dennis Howery and Mary Virginia Young Howery.
He was a member of Bundy’s Chapel Baptist Church in Witten Valley. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Harris, and two brothers, Joseph G. Howery and Billy R. Howery.
Survivors: loving wife of 51 years, Ida Mae Hall Howery; daughter, Virginia Mae Howery-Ford and husband, Bob, of Falls Church; son, Roger Allen Howery of Baltimore, MD; special granddaughter, C. Taylor Ford of Falls Church; step-grandson, Aaron Ford of Charlottesville; brother, R. Dennis Howery of Tazewell; sisters, Nanola Hagy and Doris Corell, both of Tazewell, Mary Ruth Thompson of Bradenton, FL, Margaret "Tots" Coon of Raleigh, NC, Nell Hagy of Roanoke, Mamie Bucklen of Saugerties, NY; and "adopted" children, John Holt of Baltimore, Patricia Kinser of Tazewell, and Debbie Lafferty Eastridge of Charlotte, NC.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Feb. 14 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. John Gunter and the Rev. Dwight Eads officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

John H. Jackson
John Harmon Jackson, 77, of Paintlick, died Feb. 11, 2004 at his home following a brief illness.
Born in Belfast, he was the son of the late Taylor and Bessie Sisk Jackson, both Russell County natives.
He had made his home in the Paintlick area all of his life and was a former employee of Barnett & Cyphers, F.H. Hill Casket Co., and a retired employee of Jewell Smokeless Corp. at Vansant. He was a member of the Claypool Hill Bible Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Bostic, and three brothers, Reece L. Jackson, Hobart Jackson and Donald Eugene Jackson.
Survivors: wife, Louise Witt Jackson; daughter, Rita Beth Jackson of Paintlick; son, Mark Jackson and wife, Gale, of Paintlick; brother, Roy Lee Jackson of Mansfield, OH; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Jackson and Alex Jackson.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Carl Tegeler and Rev. Steve Tegeler officiating.
Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Bonnie E. Lemon
Bonnie E. Burton Lemon, 91, of Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 11, 2004 at her home.
Born in Big Stone Gap, she was a daughter of the late George Lloyd Davis and Julia Davis.
She was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Bluefield, VA, and had formerly worked at National Electric Coil Co. and Hart Electric.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul J. Burton and Wilmer A. Lemon; four brothers, Guy Davis, Emory Davis, Allen Davis and Chester Davis; and four sisters, Musa Hopkins, Mae Meade, Ina Ecker and Edith Pridmore. She was the last surviving member of immediate family
Survivors: daughter, Margaret Burton Cochran and husband, Mickey, of Bluefield, VA; granddaughter, Pamela Huynh and husband, Duoc, of Virginia Beach; nieces, Violet Meade and Lou Parlette; and sisters-in-law, Louella Young and Ruby Lemon, both of Bluefield, WV, and Della Mae Dunn and Pauline Atkins, both of Mansfield, OH.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Lacy Brooks and Tom Atkins officiating.
Burial followed in the Grandview Memory Gardens.

Gladys N. McClanahan
Gladys N. Snow McClanahan, 91, of Westwood Health Care Center, formerly from Bluefield, VA, died Feb. 6, 2004 at Westwood.
Born in Galax, she was a daughter of the late William M. Snow and Piercy Lynch Snow.
She was a member of the Graham Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, VA, where she was a member of the Church Circles, was a Licensed Beautician having graduated from the Little French Beauty College in 1972 and also had attended Bluefield State College.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Coy McClanahan and Jim McClanahan; one daughter, Sybil Rose; four sisters; and two brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: son, Douglas McClanahan and wife, Pat, of Falls Mills; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, VA, with the Rev. Paul Baker officiating.
Entombment followed in the Grandview Mausoleum.

Agnes Perkins
Agnes Perkins, 70, of the Lynn Springs section of Swords Creek, died Feb. 14, 2004 in a Chilhowie nursing facility.
Born Jan. 25, 1934 in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Worley Hubbard and the late Vergie Breedlove.
She was a lifelong resident of the Swords Creek area and attended several of the area churches to show her love for the Lord.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy Perkins, and one daughter, Anna Lou Perkins.
Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and James Price of Swords Creek; stepmother, Ruth Hubbard of Tazewell; sisters, Lucy Saunders and husband, Stanley, of Vilas, NC, Maggie Hurt of Cedar Bluff; brothers, Eugene Hubbard and wife, Rhonda, and Dean Hubbard and wife, Sandy, all of Cedar Bluff; step-grandson, Bradley Allen Price of Columbus, OH; special friends, Desiree Nicole Nickles and Cynthia Dye; and a host of cousins, friends and neighbors.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Leon O’Quinn, Rev. Sylvia Price and Rev. Steve Ray officiating.
Interment followed in the Miller cemetery at Swords Creek.
Annetta L. Snead
Annetta Lynn Snead, 52, of Lebanon, went to be with the Lord Feb. 10, 2004 at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of the late Delmas Sparkman and the late Mary Elizabeth Daniels Sparkman.
She was a multitalented individual who was an accomplished artist, a licensed practical nurse and both a licensed insurance and real estate agent, having performed work in all fields during her life. She attended Cornerstone Church in Richlands for many years, where her sister and brother-in-law, Tex and Juanita Sawyers, serve as pastors. She also attended Lebanon Baptist Church for many years, where she was active in many activities, including serving as both Top 50 and Acteens Group director.
Survivors: husband, R. D. Snead; daughter, Beth Snead of Lebanon; sisters, Mrs. Tex (Juanita) Sawyers, and Mrs. Greg (Diane) Smith, both of Richlands; brother Larry Sparkman, of Richlands; nieces and nephews, Stephanie Williams, Sevarin Smith, Cassie Smith, Kelsey Smith, Ashley Cole and Catherine Sparkman; nephews, Shawn Sawyers, Bradley Sparkman, Blake Snead, Casey Snead and Matthew E. Snead; great-nephews, Dylan Sawyers and Andrew Williams; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Myrtle Snead; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Leanne Snead; best friends, Rhonda Hooker and Katherine Pleacher Smith; and special friends, Lillie Brown and Louise Shelton.
A service celebrating and honoring her life was conducted Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Lebanon Baptist Church with pastors, The Rev. Tex Sawyers, Cornerstone Church, Richlands, and The Rev. Tom Edwards, Lebanon Baptist Church officiating.
Burial followed in Russell Memorial cemetery.

Mary M. Tiller
Mary Marie Tiller, 82, of Council, died Feb. 12, 2004 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Gladys Wilson.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Earl Tiller; her grandparents, whom she was raised by, Jake and Orha Belle Wilson; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Survivors: daughters, Lois Edwards of Bee, Retha Tiller and husband, Clayton, of Council; sons, Swanson Tiller of Claypool Hill, Willis Tiller of the home, Raymond Tiller of Council, Ronald Tiller and wife, Elsie of Breaks; sisters, Bessie Tiller of Council, Edith Connors of Burlington, NC; brothers, Rev. Homer Wilson and Earl Wilson, both of Honaker; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.
Rachel C. Turpin
Rachel C. Turpin, 91, of North Tazewell, formerly of Squire, WV, died Feb. 10, 2004 at her home.
Born March 31, 1912 in Pea Patch, she was a daughter of the late John Frank Keen and Louisa Cole Keen.
She was a member of the Squire Freewill Baptist Church, and after moving to Tazewell, she attended the Tazewell Christian Church. She was also a member of the Ellison Rebekah Lodge in Squire, WV.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.M. (Ken) Turpin; three children, Augustine Turpin, Eloise Rasnake, and Lois Turpin; and several sisters and brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughters, Ruth Hicks and husband, J.C., of Blountville, TN, Hallie Carson and husband, Richard, of College Park, MD, Patty Pike and husband, Roger, of Tazewell; sons, James F. Turpin, Sr. and wife, Peggy, of North Tazewell, Eugene Turpin and wife, Joy, of Siler City, NC; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special caregiver, Sandy Rife of Pounding Mill.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Michael Stump officiating.
Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.

Danny Yates
Danny Yates, 48, of the Deskins area of Vansant, died Feb. 11, 2004 from injuries sustained in a house fire.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late David Yates and Trula Osborne Yates of Vansant.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Holiness faith. He was a disabled coal miner.
He was preceded in death by one infant sister, Evelyn Yates.
Additional survivors: sisters, Mollie Diles of Patterson, Rita Yates of Richlands, Phyllis Yates of Vansant; brothers, Clyde Junior Yates, Jimmy Lee Yates and Benny Yates, all of Vansant; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. James Chapman officiating.
Burial followed in the Dry Fork cemetery at the mouth of Dry Fork, Vansant.
Services were conducted Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
