Jay K. Short
Jay Kelly Short, 83, of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 15, 2003 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Joe and Mollie Newberry Short.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local 1760.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Short; two brothers, Roy Short and George Short; and three sisters, Sadie Absher, Dolly Whited and Dell Wade.
Survivors: daughters, Iva Fridley and husband, David, of Durham, NC, Teresa Holmes and husband, David, of Richlands; sons, Douglas Short and wife, Edie, of Pounding Mill, Michael Short of Roanoke; sister, Rosie Stilwell of Baptist Valley; grandchildren, Christopher Meade, Johnathan Meade, Anthony Holmes and Kala Short; and great-grandchildren, Gage Meade, Garrett Meade and Logan Jewell.
The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Jerry Casey and Rev. Monroe Greeley officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Military graveside rites were conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County DAV Chapter 31.
Bennie Curtis Steele
Bennie Curtis Steele, 62, of Richlands, died Oct. 8, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Born in Kentucky, he was the son of the late Curtis and Roxie Sloane Steele.
He was a hair designer.
Survivors: his life partner, John McCracken (aka) Johnny Mack of Richlands; daughters, Adria Steele and Shawn Monell, both of Topeka, KS, Tamera Foster of New Jersey; son, Bennie Steele, Jr. of North Carolina; brothers, Robert Steele of Pin Hill, KY, Randy Steele of Roanoke; sisters, Julia Evans and Wanda Hashemzadeh, both of German Town, MD; special caregiver, Emmitt (Buck) Sergant of Richlands; special friend, Jimmy Ray Summers of Richlands; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Disposition was private.

Gerald Robert Stilwell
Gerald Robert Stilwell, 63, of Bastian, died Oct. 20, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell.
Born at Horsepen, he was the son of the late Tobe Webster Stilwell and Lora Zell Dickens Stilwell.
He was a former employee of Consolidation Coal Company.
Survivors: wife, Elizabeth Hamm Stilwell; daughters, Susan (Becky) Sheets and husband, Glen, of Tazewell, Carol Asbury and husband, William, of Bastian; sister, Marie Bowman of Bastian; and grandchildren, Kyle Sheets, Lora Sheets, Coreena Asbury, and Robert Asbury.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Doug Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
Ray E. Vandyke
Ray Ellis Vandyke, 74, of the Deskins section of Vansant, died Oct. 15, 2003 at his home.
Born in Piketon, OH, he was the son of the late Perry and Stella Matney Vandyke.
He was a retired coal miner having worked for the Island Creek Coal Company, Beatrice and Virginia Pocahontas Mine #6. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He attended the Primitive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nadine Smith Vandyke in 1996.
Survivors: wife, Trecy Keene Davis Vandyke; daughter, Sandra Deel of Vansant; son, Sonny Vandyke of Grundy; stepson, Joey Davis of Grundy; brothers, Roy Vandyke of Patterson, Roscoe Vandyke of Glascow, KY, Ralph Vandyke of Largo, FL, Roger Vandyke of Farmville; half-brothers, Robert Vandyke of Bristol, TN, Donald Vandyke of Petersburg; half-sister, Nell Dean of Macon, GA; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step grandchild; and one step great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Elders Bobby Arrington, Buford Deel, Garnell Gilbert, Franklin Viers, Roger Fuller and Delford Ward officiating.
Burial followed in the Community cemetery on Baldwin Mountain near Vansant.
An evening service was conducted at the funeral home Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. with Evangelist Michael Trent and Evangelist Hobert Kennedy officiating.
Judi C. Wood
Judi Carol Clark Wood, 45, of Lenoir, died Oct. 1, 2003 in Battle Creek, MI.
Born in Richlands, she was a daughter of Dewey M. Clark of Battle Creek and Devonie G. "Bonnie" Dye Sullivan of Sawmills.
She had been a resident of Lenoir for the past 19 years and was employed as a licensed practical nurse. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and arts and crafts.
She was married
to David L. Wood II on June 19, 1994.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Dean Clark and Danny Harold Clark.
Additional survivors: stepmother, Esther Clark of Battle Creek; half-sister, Teresa Clark of Sawmills; stepbrother, Ron Reed of Grand Blanc, MI; and stepsister, Pauline Smith of Battle Creek.
Memorial services were conducted Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel at Claypool Hill with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating.

Lila L. Agent
Lila Lynn Agent, 53, of Jewell Ridge, died Feb. 12, 2004 at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Jewell Ridge, she was a daughter of the late James Alonzo and Goldie Lucille Gilbert Goodin, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a disabled coal miner, a former employee of Jewell Ridge Coal Corp. and Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
She had made her home in the Jewell Ridge area most of her life and attended Worldwide Church of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dennis Leroy Tripp, and two brothers, Jim Frank Goodin and William Goodin.
Survivors: sons, James Leroy Tripp, Michael Edmond Tripp, Thomas Franklin Agent, Daniel Steven Agent and Joshua Aaron Agent, all of Jewell Ridge; former husband, Robert Glenn Agent of Torrence, CA; brother, Stephen Terry Goodin of Jewell Ridge; sister, Zola Zee Starnes of Pikeville, KY; and grandchildren, Starla Michell Tripp and Justin Glenn Tripp.
The funeral was conducted Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. at her home in Jewell Ridge with Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.
Interment followed in the Gilbert Family cemetery on Stinson Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Kelli Bailey Bartley
Kelli Bailey Bartley, 37, of Thomasville, NC, died Feb. 4, 2004 at High Point Regional Hospital.
Born in Asheville, NC, she was a daughter of Ronnie and Shirley Young Bailey of Wallburg, NC.
She attended Western Carolina and Winston-Salem State Universities and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She married
Timothy J. Bartley on March 10, 1990. She was a phlebotomist with Moses Cone Regional Cancer Center.
Additional survivors: sisters, Kim B. Craven and husband, Jim, of Wallburg; brother, Ronnie II and wife, Katina, of Wallburg; special nephew, Justin Craven; grandparents, Rotha and Leona Bailey of Burnsville, NC; mother-in-law, Joyce R. Cox of Cedar Bluff; special aunts, uncles and cousins; and beloved pets, Chase and Cinnamon.
Memorial services were conducted Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at Providence Place of First Wesleyan Church in High Point with Dr. Brooks Hunt, The Rev. Jerry Benfield and The Rev. John Vernon officiating.

William F. Byrd
William Farley Byrd, 50, of Manassas, passed away peacefully at home Feb. 11, 2004.
He was born Feb. 28, 1953 in Bluefield.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Edgar Byrd; mother, Virginia Farley Byrd; and one sister, Carole Ann Byrd Blevins.
He earned degrees from Bluefield Junior College and the University of Virginia. He was an English and Film Studies instructor at W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax and taught previously at Broad Run High School in Ashburn. During his professional teaching career, he also coached high school athletics.
Survivors: niece, Melanie Belvins Froning; nephew, John Michael Belvins; cousin, Richard "Buddy" Farley; great nieces and nephews; and other relatives.
Burial was private in Bluefield, VA.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, contributions may be made in his name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or The Hospices of the National Capital Region.

Inda Belle Hall
Inda Belle Hall, 92, of the Baptist Valley section of North Tazewell, died Feb. 16, 2004 at a Tazewell hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Swords Creek, she was the daughter of the late Robert Franklin and Ida Belle Breedlove Hale.
She had made her home in Tazewell County her entire life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Tazewell Baptist Church and senior citizens organizations.
She was the widow of Jack Hall. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by seven sisters, Opal Honaker Altizer, Lida Miller, Kate Taylor, Lola Call, Daisy Dye, Hazel Brown and Mary Strouth; and two brothers, Beechamp and Robert Hale. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Survivors: daughter, Virginia Helen Hall of North Tazewell; son, Donald Curtis Hall and wife, Sara, of Radford; grandchildren, Donald C. Hall Jr. and wife, Ruth, William Kent Hall and wife, Karen, Johnny Reynolds, Jackie Horton and husband, Thomas, and Cathy E. Compton and husband, Craig; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Hall, Matthew Hall, Sara Hall, Lindsey Hall, Lauren Hall, Cullen Compton, Amanda Horton and Matthew Horton; and a host of loving nieces and nephews, especially Peggy Beavers.
The funeral will be conducted Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Sam Altizer officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
