Joseph E. Byrd
Joseph Edward Byrd, 90, of Roanoke, formerly of Red Ash, died Oct. 11, 2003 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Red Ash, he was a son of the late Berry Newton and Margaret Magalene Smith Byrd, both Fork Ridge natives.
He had made his home in the Roanoke area since 1966 and attended the Victory Praise Fellowship in Bedford County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Murphy, five sisters, and three brothers.
Survivors: wife, Nancy Ann Byrd; daughter, Connie Vandyke of Detroit, MI; sons, Bueford Byrd and Kennith Byrd, both of Baltimore, MD, Samuel Byrd of Evansville, IN, Robert Byrd, Elmer Byrd, Delmer Byrd and Leslie Byrd, all of Roanoke; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Kenny Miller and Rev. Clarence Brown officiating.
Interment followed in the Ball Family cemetery on Road Ridge near Raven.
Hank Cole
Hank Cole, 57, of Whitewood, died Oct. 11, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Born at Whitewood, he was the son of the late Fulton G. Cole and Madge Jewell Cole.
He was an equipment operator with Mac Construction Company at Oakwood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one foster sister, Pearl Cole.
Survivors: his significant other, Joan Endicott of Whitewood; daughters, Abigail Vile of Fort Lewis, WA, Amy Morici of Jacksonville, FL, Adria Kilbreath of Lake City, FL, Amanda Cole of Christiansburg; brother, L.R. Cole of Whitewood; and six grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Jimmy Cole officiating.
Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens cemetery at Claypool Hill.
Ellen M. Compton
Ellen Musick Compton, 89, of Honaker, went to be with the Lord Oct. 6, 2003 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy.
Born in Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Dye Musick.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Compton, Sr.; two daughters, June Harris and Marie Willis; and one grandson, David Compton. In her generation, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors: sons, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Compton, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Compton and Sherman Compton, all of Richmond, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Compton and Carl Compton, all of Honaker; stepdaughters, Irene Scott of Norfolk, Lola Pearl Danza of North Carolina; sons-in-law, Leroy Willis of Richmond, Talbert Harris of Honaker; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel in Honaker with Rev. Giles Wilson and Rev. Virgil Musick officiating.
Interment followed in the Meade cemetery at Honaker.
Annie Marie Dillard
Annie Marie Williams Dillard, 79, of Tazewell, died Oct. 10, 2003 at Tazewell Community Hospital.
Born in Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lena Jones Williams.
She was raised by her paternal grandparents, the late Charles and Jeannie Johnson Williams.
She had lived most of her life in Tazewell, with the exception of a few years that she resided in Bluefield, WV. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Tazewell, where she served as treasurer and as a member of the choir. She was a former employee of Tazewell Community Hospital.
In addition to her parents and paternal grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Dillard; maternal grandparents, Charles and Carolina Smith Jones; one brother, John G. Williams; one sister, Jo R. Williams; and several aunts and uncles.
Survivors: sister, Ida Williams of Dayton, OH; niece, Hazel W. Davis of Columbus, OH; a dedicated and caring cousin, William E. Cecil Sr. of Tazewell; and several other cousins and friends.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Dr. Carolyn Browning and Dr. Janice Harris officiating.
Burial followed at Maplewood cemetery in Tazewell.
Hazel M. Elkins
Hazel Madeline Owens Elkins, 75, of Richlands, died Oct. 11, 2003 in Baltimore, MD, following a long illness.
Born in Russell County, she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha Lou Boyd Owens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred Elkins; one brother, William Lee Owens; and two sisters, Carrie Rimmer and Elzia Whitt.
Survivors: sons, Gerald Elkins and wife, Amy, of Baltimore, Wayne Elkins and wife, Gale, of Salinas, CA; daughter, Patricia Elmos and husband, Peter, of Baltimore; sisters, Mazie Boyd of Honaker, Gladys Noel and husband, Aldolphus, of Swords Creek; brother, Glen Owens and wife, Greta, of Swords Creek; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many, many loving relatives and friends.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Elders Ronnie Beavers and Willard Owens officiating.
Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Powell S. "Bud" Elswick, Jr.
Powell S. "Bud" Elswick, Jr., 83, of Richlands, died Oct. 10, 2003 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Powell S. and Emma Dawson Elswick, Sr.
He was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a retired painter. Bud’s love of beautiful flowers that he planted and cared for brought smiles to the many friends he shared his creations with.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie French Elswick.
Survivors: sister, Jean Curtis of Newport News; brother, Ronald K. Elswick and wife, Ann, of Radford; special cousins, Pansy Cole, Sonny Elswick, and John McClintock; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Gerald Stacy officiating.
Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill.

Claudia Sarah Hankins, 92, of the Earls Branch Road section of Cedar Bluff, died Oct. 13, 2003 at the home of her daughter, Betty Richardson, following a lengthy illness.

Larry D. Hankins
Larry Dale Hankins, 71, of Huntingtown, MD, formerly of Tazewell, died Oct. 8, 2003 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation at South River, Edgewater, MD.
Survivors: wife, Lenora E. Beavers Hankins; daughter, Lydia Kay Hankins Goulart of Owings, MD; son-in-law, Francis "Buddy" Hankins of Owings; grandchildren, Francis "Joey" Goulart, Elizabeth Goulart and William "Willy" Goulart, all of Owings; and mother, Myrtle Louise Worley, of Edgewater, formerly of Tazewell.
The funeral will be conducted Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings with Reverend Robert Wagner officiating.
Interment will follow in Maryland Veterans cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.

Annie R. Hess, 64, of Rosedale, died Oct. 12, 2003 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Hobert and Tina Hess and a lifelong resident of the area.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Hess, and one sister, Nora Mae Dye.
Survivors: brothers, Billy Hess and Winston Hess, both of Swords Creek, Bobby Hess and Jimmy Hess, both of Honaker; sisters, Peggy Perkins, Shirley Hess and Ruby Dye, all of Swords Creek, Sue Hess of Blackford, Shelby Lowe of Burlington, NC, Geraldine Hess of Newberry, SC; and several nieces nephews.
The funeral was conducted Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel at Honaker with Rev. Mike Ryan and Rev. David Perkins officiating.
Interment followed in the Wilson cemetery at Drill.
Claude K. Rasnake
Claude Kenneth Rasnake, 60, of Bee, died Oct. 6, 2003 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Pierce and Carrie Elizabeth Barton Rasnake.
A lifelong resident of the area, he was a disabled coal miner, having been employed by Clinchfield Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA and attended the Dante Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Thurman Rasnake, and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
Survivors: wife, Shirley Rasnake; daughters, Rebecca Scott and her husband, Kevin, of Rosedale, Elizabeth Johnson of Bee; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Audrey Rasnake of Bee, Jeffery and Polly Rasnake of Council, Tony and Donna Rasnake of Bee; sisters, Frances Presley of Vansant, Eva Jean Stevens of Rosedale; brothers, Maynard Rasnake of Rosedale, James Rasnake of Council, Herman Rasnake of Bristol, TN; half-sister, Margie Cook of Davenport; half-brothers, Hurcle Rasnake of Clintwood, Billy Rasnake of Tazewell; and grandchildren, Leann Horne, Kenny Barton, Cassandra Barton, Holly Rasnake, Charlie Rasnake, Nathan Rasnake, Jessica Johnson, Jamie Johnson and Makayla Scott.
