Clarence Wyatt Alston
(June 12, 1926 - November 2, 2011)

Clarence Wyatt Alston, 85, of Irvington VA peacefully departed November 2, 2011.

Born June 12, 1926 in Richmond, VA, Clarence graduated from John Marshall High School in 1943. He attended the University of Richmond, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He also attended Emory University, in Atlanta, GA and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration. Clarence served in the U.S.Navy and upon discharge worked in Washington D.C. for the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Clarence worked extensively in the banking industry for 40 years, including 2 years with the Federal Reserve. In 1950 he joined The Bank of Virginia, in Richmond, VA as Assistant Director of Personnel. He earned certificates, Pre-standard and Standard from The American Institute of Banking. He subsequently became the vice president in charge of all retail services for the bank in 1965. In this position, he was instrumental in developing the Master Card services, which is now Capital One.

After his retirement from The Bank of Virginia, Clarence joined The Bank of Lancaster Kilmarnock, VA and spent 7 years as Senior Vice President and Trust Officer. He helped to further promote the newly established Trust Department, now known as Bay Banks of Virginia, Inc.

Among his many professional association and civic involvements, Clarence served as president of the Richmond Civitan Club, president of Richmond Chapter of the Easter Seal Society of Virginia, chairman of the Salvation Army in Lancaster County, president of the Atlantic States section of Consumers Bankers Association, president of the Richmond Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, a director of Northern Neck Insurance Company, president of the Lancaster County Lions Club, president of Chesapeake Academy Foundation.

Clarence was a member of Richard Henry Lee SAR Chapter, the Ancient Planters Association and the Jamestown Society; formerly he was a member of Salisbury Country Club in Richmond, VA and Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, Kilmarnock VA.

Clarence was a long-time member of Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Weems VA where he served as deacon, elder and church treasurer. Previously while a member of Bon Air Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield County VA., he was elected to the Board of Deacons and served as chairman.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 57 years Anne Simpson Alston; four children, Allen Davies Alston and wife Debby, of Kernersville, NC; Charles Wyatt Alston and wife Susan of Davidson, NC; Joanne Webb-Fary and husband, E. Randolph of Gloucester, VA; Susan Alston Fenerty and husband, William of Midlothian, VA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; Lauren Alston Bridges, Anna Alston Ashby, Claire Alston, Bethany Alston, John Alston, Emily Webb, Nathaniel Fenerty, Kirkland Fenerty, Elizabeth Fenerty; and two step-grandchildren, Katherine Fary and David Fary; and a sister-in-law Mary Ellen Worlledge and her husband Donald of Roanoke, VA. .

At his request, Clarence was interred at a private ceremony held graveside at Historic Christ Church, Weems, VA on November 6. The Rev. W. Clay Macaulay presided.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, Irvington, Virginia or Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church, Weems, Virginia.

Charles Russell Warren
(June 11, 1934 - November 5, 2011)

Charles “Rus” Russell Warren, 77, of Kilmarnock died on Saturday, November 5, 2011. He was the son of the late Edward W. and Omelia Gough Warren. Mr. Warren was retired with 32 years of service as a cartographer with the Department of Defense Mapping Agency.

Surviving are his wife, Rose Marie Warren; a brother, Edward W. Warren, Jr. of Ophelia; three aunts, Inez G. Farber and Florence G. McNeal both of Kilmarnock, Elizabeth Collins of Arlington; an uncle, Julian Warren of Arlington; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock . Interment will be in Roseland cemetery, Reedville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service.

Donald Lane Miller
(May 14, 1918 - October 31, 2011)

Donald Lane Miller of Weems, born May 14, 1918, died on October 31, 2011. An Elder of Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Weems and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock in White Stone. Mr. Miller was Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Kenyon College, classmate of poet Robert Lowell, Lt. Commander, United States Navy Intelligence Officer and listed in Who’s Who of America.

Donald Miller was the former president of Northern Virginia Chapter (Alexandria) of Sons of the American Revolution. He was the Executive Director of the National Captive Nations Committee, chartered by Act of U.S. Congress (Public Laws 86-90) in 1959 and signed by President Eisenhower. He served twice in that capacity, 1959 to mid-1970s and from 1985 into the late 1990s.

He worked with Professor (later Ambassador) LevDobriansky in securing passage of the law, and in producing the annual commemorations each July. He was the founder of Virginia Cultural Laureates Program, 1970s. He was the founder of Northern Neck newsletter, COMMUNITY FORUM. Mr. Miller was the founder Children's Aid International during the Vietnam War. As the U.S. military left Vietnam, the organization responded to the desperate needs of the thousands of orphans left behind in the abandoned villages and refugee camps. Their life saving efforts expanded beyond Vietnam to the Philippines and other countries. One of his proudest accomplishments, Lancaster Community Library's Storymobile, which he and a few others founded.

His career was formidable, from reporter for the Washington Post to speech writer for United States presidents, and a Korean President. He loved to tell stories about rubbing shoulders with famous men, and kissing the hands of stunning women ...among them, Elizabeth Taylor.

He is the author of "Strategy for Conquest: A study of Communist Propaganda Techniques" (1966); "Centennial: Campbell Memorial Presbyterian Church" (1989); "John Smith ... The Original Founding Father"(to be published); Co-founder(1974) Braddock Communications, Herndon.

Donald Miller lives on in the devoted and loving hearts of his family, Thea Marshall and Eva Abel, of Weems, along with Madeleine Abel VanHook and her family, Herb VanHook, children Ben and Hannah VanHook of Northern Virginia, and in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched and made a bit more interesting by his wealth of captivating stories.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, December 3 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock in White Stone.

Elizabeth Woolston Lake
(August 6, 1913 - October 27, 2011)

Elizabeth Woolston Lake, 98, of Kilmarnock died on October 27, 2011. She was the widow of Charles Emory Lake, a devoted member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church and active in church charities. Mrs. Lake was a World War II veteran of the Navy Nurse Corps and one of the first nurses to arrive in Pearl Harbor after the Japanese Attack. Upon completion of her duty in Pearl Harbor, she returned to Portsmouth Naval Hospital. After her Navy career, she served as a Public Health Nurse for 25 years in Montgomery County, Md. and Fairfax County, Va.

Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth R. “Betsy” Lake of Kilmarnock; a son, Archie M. Lake and wife, April C. of Lancaster; two grandsons, Brandon and Andrew Lake; a sister, Eileen Dooley of Mobile, Ala.; two brothers, Harry Woolston of Warminster, Pa. and Richard Woolston of Sea Isle City, N.J.;

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 2 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, Kilmarnock with Father James Bruse officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

John Steven Montgomery
(May 31, 1957 - October 3, 2011)

John Steven Montgomery, 54, of Kilmarnock died on October 3, 2011. He was a member of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department and an electrician.

Surviving are his wife, Laura C. Montgomery; four daughters, Chelsea D. Montgomery, Kelley L. Montgomery both of Kilmarnock, Stacy L. Montgomery and Martae M. Montgomery both of Winter Haven, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kaydence and Brody; a sister, Shelia K. Montgomery of Maryland.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m.Thursday, October 6 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Interment will be private. Friends may call 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Rodney Winthrop Smith, Sr.
March 20, 1928 - February 18, 2012

Rodney Winthrop Smith, Sr. died February 18, 2012. He was the son of the late Frederick R. Smith and Beatrice Georgi. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marcella Tweddle. He was born March 20, 1928 and lived in New York City. He attended Trinity School in NYC and graduated from the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1945. He graduated from Columbia University in New York City in 1949 after which he received his Master of Education from Teachers College of Columbia University.

Upon graduating with his Masters, he started teaching Social Studies at Grace Church School, NYC where he met Phyllis Fiske Smith who was already teaching kindergarten there. On December 27, 1951, they were married in Grace Church Chantry. After two years, Rodney was offered a position in Indian Hill High School in the Social Studies Department in Ohio. His wife taught first grade in the Concord School.

In 1955, Rodney started teaching in the Social Studies Department of Pelham Memorial High School in Pelham, New York where he stayed until he retired in 1985. He taught the large group courses dealing with the geography and history of the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Far East as well as Psychology and Sociology. Mr. Smith served as the President of the Pelham Teachers Union and for the last ten years was Head of the Pelham’s Social Studies Department.

In 1972, the Smith’s moved to North Stamford, CT where they lived until Mr. Smith’s humongous retirement party! The Smith’s retired to Irvington, Virginia and spent five months of the year in Manasota Key, Florida. Mr. Smith has been a member of the NYC Athletic Club, Apawamis Club in Rye, New York and the Indian Creek Country Club in Kilmarnock, Virginia.

He is dearly missed by his wife of sixty years, Phyllis F. Smith and their two sons, Winthrop Smith and Lawrence L. Smith and his wife Robin Wright all of whom live in Maine; his brother Frederick R. Smith, Jr. and his wife Patricia, who live in Pennsylvania and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in the auditorium at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury on Thursday, February 23, at 11:30 a.m.

David Horace Kent
January 1, 1932 - February 13, 2012

David Horace Kent, 80, of Kilmarnock died on February 13, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy Wright Kent and a member of Wicomico Baptist Church. Mr. Kent was a resident of the Masonic Home of Virginia and a member of the Lancaster Union Lodge # 88 A.F. & A.M.

Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 19 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. Lee Scripture officiating. Interment will be in Wicomico Baptist Church cemetery, Remo. Friends may call one hour prior to the funeral service. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held following the funeral service.

William "Bill Lafayette Parks
March 31, 1926 - February 15, 2012

William Lafayette "Bill" Parks of Morattico died peacefully surrounded by loved ones Wednesday, February 15, 2012. He was 85.

Born on Tangier Island on March 31, 1926 to Graden and Flora Parks, he moved to Morattico in Lancaster County when he was seven years old. He graduated from Lively High School and married his high school sweetheart, the late Nancy Forrester. They were married for 44 years.

As a native Tangier-man, Mr. Parks had water in his veins and followed in his father's footsteps as a waterman, crabbing and oystering on the Rappahannock River. He joined Emmanuel United Methodist Church in 1939, where he sang in the choir. He was recently honored as a 50-year member of the Bethel-Emmanuel Methodist Men. He spent the last year of his life at Farnham Manor, surrounded by a caring and faithful staff.

He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, and daughter, Bonnie P. Hinton. Mr. Parks is survived by a daughter, Lorraine P. Dixon and husband, Charles of Alfonso; a son-in-law, Harvey Hinton of Miskimon; granddaughter, Lisa Valdrighi and her husband, Chris of Weems; grandson, Ryan Hinton and his wife, Cheryl of Glenn Allen; grandson, Edward Dixon of Falls Church and granddaughter, Melinda Dixon of Napersville, Illinois; and six great-grandchildren, Shawn and Rachel Valdrighi and Madison, Peyton, Julia and Nolan Hinton.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 18 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Morattico with interment at Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery, Lively. The family will receive friends 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Friday, February 17 at the church. Pallbearers will be Charles Dixon, Edward Dixon, Harvey Hinton, Chris Valdrighi, Shawn Valdrighi, Ryan Hinton and Peyton Hinton.

David James Raffetto, Capt. USN, (Ret.)
May 18, 1941 - February 4, 2012

David James Raffetto, Capt., USN (Ret.), 70, of Irvington died at home on Saturday, February 4, 2012, surrounded by his family.

Born on May 18, 1941 in Germantown, Pennsylvania, the oldest son of the late Dorothy James Raffetto and Augustus Louis Raffetto he was raised in Doylestown, Pa. He attended Susquehanna University and graduated in 1965 with a BS degree. While there he met Kathryn (Kate) Ramsey whom he married in 1966.

After joining the US Navy in 1966, he became a Navy aviator. He trained in Pensacola, Florida, a base for which he later served as Squadron Executive Office and Commanding Officer. An expert in Anti-submarine warfare he flew H3-H Sea King Helicopters. A born teacher, he was training officer of helicopter pilots.

From 1971-1974, David was posted as Exchange Officer with the Royal Navy, serving on the HMS Norfolk, flag ship for NATO forces. David served as commanding officer of Lakehurst (NJ) Naval Air Station from 1990-093. He also had various assignments in the Pentagon and Hampton Roads area bases, both as an aviator and as a naval personnel expert.

He retired at the rank of Captain in 1995. For the next six years, he was a consultant to the US Navy working with various Crystal City firms as well as directly with the US Navy.

When early in his career he regularly flew personnel between the Washington DC area and Norfolk, David became intrigued with the area known as the Northern Neck of Virginia as a possible retirement location. This thought became a reality in July, 2001, when he and Kate moved to Irvington.

A lifelong sailor, David soon joined the Rappahannock River Yacht Club where he served as Commodore in 2006 and 2007. He was an active “Beaver” working on a variety of development projects around the club. He and Kate regularly cruised in their 34 foot Saber “Success”. He raced in PHRF races, both as captain on “Success” and as crew on other boats. In addition he regularly raced in the Cape Dory Typhoon, “Dea Latis”. He also participated as crew in the “Caribbean 1500” a race/cruise from Hampton, Virginia to the island of Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands.

David Raffetto became very active in Irvington activities. He served as President of the Village Improvement Association (VIA) for several years, on the Citizen’s Advisory Committee for the town’s master plan review and on the Irvington Planning Commission. In addition he served on the Fourth of July Parade Committee and on the Lights on the Creek Committee.

He was diagnosed with thymic cancer in 2010. For the next 18 months he underwent a variety of treatments, including experimental programs at Duke University Hospital and the National Institutes of Health. He stoically endured all the treatments and throughout it all maintained a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and continued to be more concerned about others than with himself.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Kate; his son, Brian Raffetto and wife, Sherrie; his daughter, Sarah Raffetto Jameson and husband, Phil; four grandchildren, Alex and Kelsey Raffetto and Corey and Kayle Jameson; a brother, John Raffetto and wife, Jennifer and their children, Peter and Jay and wife, Emily; a sister, Janet Raffetto and her partner, Peggy Hardin; as well as many dear friends who will greatly miss him.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Kilmarnock with Military Honors. A reception will follow at the Rappahannock River Yacht Club in Irvington.

Thomas Nelson Nance
October 18, 1936 - February 3, 2012

Thomas Nelson Nance of Kilmarnock, our much loved husband, father and grandfather passed away February 3, 2012 at the age of 75. He will be remembered for his love of animals, great and small; curiosity of the wonders of nature, especially birds; loyalty in his friendships; and, most of all of making us laugh. His special loved ones, Barbara, Kris, Jeff, Matt, Lindley, Jake and Dommie.

Services will be private.

Margie E. Bowman

Margie Elizabeth Bowman, 95, of Tazewell, died Oct. 12, 2003 at her home.

Born Nov. 20, 1907 in Thompson Valley, she was a daughter of the late Joseph St. Clair Davidson and Sallie Lawson Davidson.

She was of the Presbyterian faith and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Frank Bowman; one daughter, Grace Marie Bowman White; four sisters, Nora Jane Peery, Bessie Mae Ward, Ollie Louise Alley, and Mary Marie Puckett Hess; three brothers, Johnny Davidson, William "Bill" McKinley Davidson, and Charles T. Davidson; and one grandson, Stockton W. White, Jr.

Survivors: son, Earl Hubert Bowman of Burkes Garden; grandchildren, Mary Lou Turner and husband, Roger, Earl Herbert Bowman, David Allen Bowman, Jeffery Scott Bowman, and Carol Riddle; eleven great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Joan Harman, Elizabeth Rhudy, Lillie Asbury, and Delphine Wilson.

The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Oct. 14 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Meredith Williams and Elder Farley Beavers officiating.

Burial followed at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA.
