Jean Norris Booth McKenney

Jean Norris Booth McKenney, 82, of Irvington a retired Fairfax County Public School teacher and former Reedville resident passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 at Rappahannock-Westminster Canterbury, Irvington. She was born on August 13, 1929 in Reedville the daughter of the late Thomas Jennings Booth and Wilhelmina Norris Booth. She completed her secondary education at St. Mary's Female Seminary, St. Mary's City, Md. She attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond from which she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She continued graduate work at the University of Richmond and was the recipient of the Master of Arts degree history and political science in 1956. Post graduate work followed at Yale University and the University of Virginia.
She began her professional career as a secondary school teacher at Wicomico High School in Northumberland County. She assisted in the consolidation of Northumberland County Schools and taught for several years at the newly consolidated Northumberland County High school in Heathsville. In September 1956 she became a member of the faculty of the Upper School of St. Catherine's Episcopal School for Girls in Richmond where she taught Bible and English History. In December 1959 she married
Robert Neil McKenney. In 1960 she became associated with the Chesterfield County Schools teaching Government at the 12th grade level at the newly opened Huguenot High School In 1984 she and her husband relocated to Fairfax County where they became associated with Fairfax County Public Schools and where they both remained until retirement in 1984. Mrs. McKenney taught at Luther Jackson Intermediate School and James Madison High School in Vienna.
In retirement she traveled extensively including the countries of Eastern Europe, Asia, and Australia. For more than fifty years she was a member of Cobbs Hall Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution having served as regent of Cobbs Hall Chapter for two terms. Other offices in that organization included Vice-Regent, Corresponding Secretary, Chaplain, and Recording secretary. She was past president of the Regent's Club for District II, NSDAR She served as Recording Secretary and State Registrar for VADAR. In 2007 she was the recipient of the NSDAR Certificate of Award for Excellence in Community Service a very high honor for her service to the community at large. She was a charter member and organizing member, past president, and chaplain Chairman of the Music Committee of Lettice Lee Chapter, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century. At the national level she was past Historian General and Organizing Secretary General in addition to serving as Chairman if the National Scholarship Committee and National Defense Chairman. In addition she chaired a committee at the national level entitled Mentors for Youth Education which was responsible for bringing adult volunteers into the elementary level classroom to assist elementary school teachers with the reading program. She was a member of the National Society Daughters of 1812 and Virginia Society United Daughters of 1812 having served as past president of the Eliza Monroe Chapter and also as past State president, chaplain and State parliamentarian of that organization. She was a fifty year member of the Virginia Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and served as president of the Lancaster Chapter, the Lancaster Grays.
Other organizations to which she belonged included the Jamestowne Society. She was charter member of its Chesapeake Bay branch and served as its governor. She was a member of the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society and served as vice-president from Northumberland County and also as its year book editor during the sesquicentennial year of Northumberland County. She was a past president of the Northumberland County Woman's Club, having been an earlier member of the Northumberland County Junior Woman's Club. She was a member of the Northumberland County Historical Society, and was a benefactor of the Rice's Hotel/Hughlett's Tavern restoration. She was a Life Member of Historic Christ Church Foundation in Irvington. She was a member of the Boatwright Society of the University of Richmond. She was a charter member and an organizing member of the Genealogical Society of the Northern Neck of Virginia. She was a member of the first Foundation Board charged with fund raising for Rappahannock General Hospital. She was also an original member of the board charged with the responsibility of building and funding the new Public Library building in Northumberland County in Heathsville. She was a member of Virginia Chapter National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims in which she held the position of Elder. Over the years she received numerous certificates and awards acknowledging her contribution to these organizations. To each organization to which she belonged she gave unstintingly of herself and her intelligence. Her quick response to include her wit was one of her outstanding characteristics. She was a devoted teacher and beloved friend to many. Together with her husband a research scholarship was established at the Virginia Historical Society for historical studies of the Northern Neck In July 2010 that organization recognized both Mr. & Mrs. McKenney when they awarded this couple the Lora Robins Award for their work in historic preservation in Virginia and in particular the Northern Neck.
She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church Fleeton where she served as organist from a very early age, choir member, member of the Altar Guild, vestry person, Registrar and chairman of the UTO. She was the first female to hold the position of chalicist for the St. Mary's congregation. She was a former president of the Episcopal Church Women for St. Mary's Episcopal Church and served as president of Region II of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Virginia. Until ill health prevented she was a member of the Senior Choir of Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Robert N. McKenney; a sister, Edna Pace Booth Hungerford of Aiken South Carolina; a niece, Susan Hungerford Wilson and husband Kevin of North Augusta, S.C. and their children Kevin Jr., Christopher, and Tyler Wilson; a niece Rebecca McKenney Blackhurst and husband Paul of Glen Allen and their children John, Jennifer, and Jarrod Blackhurst; a nephew John Berryman McKenney III and wife Valerie of Fairfax and their children Justin, Elizabeth, and Carter McKenney.
Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 5 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church Fleeton with interment in Wicomico United Methodist Church cemetery, Wicomico Church. A reception will follow the interment at the Parish House of St. Mary's Episcopal Church Fleeton. The family will receive friends 3 - 5 p.m. Sunday, September 4, at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.

Margaret "Maggie" Anne Parmeter
(August 4, 1919 - August 31, 2011)
Margaret Anne “Maggie” Parmeter, 92, of Heathsville formerly of Washington, D. C., died on Wednesday, August 31, 2011. She was born on August 4, 1919 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Miss Parmeter attended the University of Minnesota and received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from George Washington University in Washington, D. C. In 1973, she retired as an Acquisition Administrator with 36 years of service for the Department of the Army. During her working career, she held various diplomatic jobs and had the opportunity for much foreign and domestic travel. An Avid lover of all animals, she was a faithful volunteer with the Animal Welfare League and Northumberland Animal Shelter. “Maggie” was a true Christian lady who was a friend to all and a master of many talents.
Surviving are her devoted and caring friends, Taneika Brooks, Tonae Seldon, Holly Rittenhouse, her goddaughters, Mary and Virginia Rittenhouse.

Jean Price Dize
(July 10, 1917 - August 28, 2011)
Jean Price Dize, 94, of Ditchley, died on Sunday, August 28, 2011.
She was born in Red Oak, Va. on July 10, 1917 daughter of the late Archie Moten Price and Mary Pearl Bridges Price. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Dize, Sr., a son, William Arthur Dize, Jr.; a daughter, Jessica Diane Dize, a brother, Hoyt Glenn Price, and a sister, Eloise Price Chilton.
Mrs. Dize worked for the Rappahannock Record for 38 1/2 years taking ads for the paper, as well as writing the local news column and helping to proofread the paper every week before it went to press. She retired in 1994 but continued to write the local news column for another 15 years for the paper. Mrs. Dize was a member of the Eastern Star King Carter Chapter 5, O.E.F. and an active member of Bluff Point United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Bluff Point Community League and the Dividing Creek Association. She also had been a volunteer at Rappahannock General Hospital since its opening.
She is survived by her brother, Boyce Price and wife, Winona of Sanford, N.C.; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Jean Jackson-Freeman and husband, Dale of Ashburn, Va.; Rebecca Diane Duncan and husband, Chris of Leesburg, Ga.; and Cheryl Anne Stone and husband, Brad of Centreville, Va.; 13 great-grandchildren; a host of nephews and nieces and great nephews and nieces; and many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 2 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Rev. Ray Massie officiating. Interment will be in Clifton Ridge cemetery, Kilmarnock. The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday September 1 at the funeral home. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

McElroy, Gary Alan, ATCM USCG (Ret.), 74, of Kilmarnock died on September 15, 2011. Master Chief McElroy retired with 35 years of service as Chief Enlisted Advisor at U. S. Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D. C. He was a charter member of Richmond County Lions Club and member and treasurer of Lancaster Lions Club. Chief McElroy was preceded in death by his daughter, Cary Lynn Kranes.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Bernice Nolde McElroy; a daughter, Donna McElroy Weiler of White Stone; two grandsons, Erik Alan Butler of White Stone, Darren Maxwell Kranes, Pvt., U.S. Army; two great grandsons, Wesley Alan and Christopher Matthew Butler; a sister, Sandra Kay Olsen of Issaquah, Wash.; two brothers, John Bruce McElroy of Seattle, Wash. and Bradley Paul McElroy of Federal Way, Wash.

John William Riley
(August 16, 1925 - September 6, 2011)
John William Riley, 86, of Lancaster, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, September 6, 2011.
John was born on August 16, 1925 in Mason City Iowa to the late Joseph A. Riley and Vivian V. Thomas Riley. He was predeceased by sisters Dorothy L. Kindschi and Vivian J. Riley Cosbey, brother Robert J. Riley; sisters-in-law Peggy L. Riley and Mary A. Riley; brothers-in-law Donald W. Crosbey and Richard Kindschi.
John spent the better part of his childhood in Aberdeen, South Dakota until the family moved east to Arlington, Virginia during the 1930’s depression. World War II saw John in the US Navy serving as part of the Admiral’s staff reaching the rank of Radioman Second Class, Falmouth, England. He participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France LTC. Flotilla #1 on June 6, 1944. John met his future wife Marguerite in Falmouth and they married
in England the following year before returning to the United States where he was assigned to Miami, Florida.
From childhood John had an interest in planes; flying in particular and pursued his career in Civil Aeronautics Administration commercially gaining a Private Pilot License and Aircraft Communicator Certificate with the CAA. This led to a position at Miami’s Air Traffic Control tower both before and after the Korean War. John was called back into active duty and served as Radioman First Class USS OGLETHORPE in the Mediterranean.
John had many interests: fishing, canoeing and in later years sailing. He sailed single handed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Florida Keys for several years. His love for aviation continued and he was a member of Academy Of Model Aeronautics for 27 years while building and flying radio controlled planes. John’s earlier Radio Operator skills lead him to his enthusiasm for “Ham” Amateur Radio Communications, with his identification number as N4DXP, and he was a member of The American Radio Relay League and Waterway Radio and Cruising Club.
He also loved playing the guitar and piano. Self taught at a very early age, John enjoyed playing for family, friends and at local Miami venues for a while until he decided to return to Northern Virginia. In Northern Virginia he established a new career as a Qualified Registered Craftsmen Member of The Piano Technician Guild Inc. He maintained a successful business in Piano Tuning and Refurbishment until retirement in 2008. He has lived in the Lancaster area for 25 years and was known as the “local piano tuner”.
John is survived by his son Michael C. Riley and wife Janice of Oldsmar, Florida; a daughter Patricia A. Keenan of Southampton, England; the mother of his children, Marguerite Riley of Dunedin, Florida; two brothers Donald C. Riley of Inverness, Florida and Ronald D. Riley and wife, Becky of Fredericksburg, Virginia, many nieces, nephews and his loving friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock with Pastor Ronald D. Riley officiating. Rev. Richard Curtis Newlon
(March 19, 1932 - August 14, 2011)
Rev. Richard Curtis Newlon, 79, of Irvington died on Sunday, August 14, 2011. Since 1987, he has served as the minister at Maple Grove Baptist Church in Foxwells and was the twelveth minister of Irvington Baptist Church in Irvington. Rev. Newlon also pastored Baptist Churches in Richmond and North Carolina and for many years worked for the Virginia Baptist Children’s Home in Salem. Rev. Newlon was a life member of Kilmarnock-Lancaster Rescue Squad and served as sexton of Historic Christ Church Foundation and Irvington Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Jean Farley Newlon; a son, Blaine Newlon and wife, Caroline of Herndon; two daughters, Laura Fay Groff and husband, Brad of Charlottesville, Dawn Lee and husband, Brian of Richmond; six grandchildren, Josh, Sarah and Hannah Newlon, Carter Groff, Aaron Lee and wife, Kim and Cameron Lee; a sister, Betty Miller of Edgewater, Md.; a stepdaughter, Angela Kellum; step granddaughter, Caitlin Gagnon; mother-in-law, Bernice Farley; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Donnie Walker.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 16 at Irvington Baptist Church, Irvington with burial in the church cemetery.

Juanita Marie Keyser Ashburn
(December 24, 1928 - August 24, 2011)
Juanita Marie Keyser Ashburn, 82, of Wicomico Church died after a long illness on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at the home of her sister, Bertha Ann Kelly, who had lovingly cared for her for the past several years. She was born on December 24, 1928, the eldest daughter of the late William Raynard and Bertha Sisson Keyser.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Sprigg and husband, Rob of Mount Airy, Maryland; five sisters, Pauline Norris and husband, William of Melvin, Michigan, Bertha Ann Kelly of Glen Allen, Iris Garrison of Kilmarnock, Shirley Davis of Lottsburg and Jeannette Walker and husband, Dwayne of Centreville; two brothers, W. R. Keyser and wife, Ray Lee of Ditchley, Warren Keyser and wife, Frances of Burgess. She was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Keyser.

Walter Joseph Tribbey, Jr.
(November 14, 1920 - August 17, 2011)
Walter Joseph Tribbey, Jr., 90, of Chouteau, Oklahoma passed away on August 17, 2011 at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury in Irvington, Va. He was the son of the late Walter J. and Ollie May Tribbey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Tribbey and son, Walter J. Tribbey, III.
Mr. Tribbey was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of the Rhineland and the Battle of Central Europe. He was the owner of Draughon Schools of Business in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Okla. Mr. Tribbey served as president of the National Association of Proprietary Schools and during his tenure was instrumental in authoring the Vocational Student Loan Act (Pell Grant) which was passed by Congress in 1969. He was also an avid hunter, fisherman and aviator.
Surviving are two daughters, Laura Stoddard and husband, Daniel Stoddard of Lancaster, Va., Shelley Fargo and husband, Col. Jeffrey Fargo, USA of Colorado Spring, Col.; five grandchildren, Charles Tribbey, Shem Bedos, Amy Mieke, Amber and Gabriel Fargo; five great grandchildren; a devoted sister, Mary Lou Osborne of Ft. Worth, Tex.; two nephews, Warren and Gary Huff.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31 at the Church of Christ in Chouteau, Oklahoma. Private graveside services will be at Fort Gibson National cemetery of Oklahoma.

Norma George Arnett
(March 24, 1946 - August 13, 2011)
Norma George Arnett, 65, passed away peacefully August 13, 2011, surrounded by her family at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester.
She was born on March 24, 1946 daughter of the late Captain Norman B. and Charlotte C. George. Norma was a lifelong member of Maple Grove Baptist Church, serving in many capacities including member of the church choir and choir director. She retired from Northern Neck Insurance Company with 19 years of service. Her love of music included singing with many community groups and playing the piano. Norma was a former member of the Lancaster Player’s and a volunteer for the White Stone United Methodist Church Thrift Store. Failing health permitted her from continuing many joys in her life. She loved life, family and touched the lives of many children. Her grandson Cameron and many other children called her “Granny” and she loved each child as if it was her own.
Surviving are her husband, Richard L. Arnett, son, Tracy Bland Arnett and wife, Nickie of Weems; stepsons, Richard William Arnett and wife, Sue and Jonathan Douglas Arnett both of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Cameron, Brandon, Makayla, Sean and Jolissa Arnett; brother C. Dale George and wife, Lillian; sister, Gail G. Huff all of White Stone; uncle, David A. Crandall; aunt Sharon T. Crandall both of Kilmarnock; mother-in-law, Eunice Thrift; nephews, Robbie Huff, Brian Thrift; nieces, Leigh Ann George, Maggie Elbourn and their families. She also leaves many loving cousins and special friends.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18 at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Interment will be in White Stone Baptist Church cemetery, White Stone. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 17 at the funeral home.

Now this child of God who fought a good fight has united with her parents, other relatives and friends whom she missed dearly, there is again singing and a happy reunion in Heaven. A beautiful life has now gone.
