D. Preston Robinson
Dorsey Preston Robinson, 75, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Riverside Convalescent Center, Mathews. He was bornA October 12, 1936.
At an early age, he was baptized and joined New Mount Zion Baptist Church. He had served on the Trustee Board and Usher Board, and with the Senior Choir and Men’s Chorus. Also, Preston was a member of the Gloucester-Mathews Male Chorus and served as a foreign missionary with Ambassadors for Christ.
Preston was educated in the Gloucester County School System. He served two years in the U.S. Army, and he retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company after 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dorsey Boston; and four brothers, Allen Pollard, Herbert Redmon, Rev. John Redmon and Smith Redmon.
Preston leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Annabell Robinson; four daughters, Betty Wyatt (Anthony), Dorothy Romine, Florine Combs and Shirley Bristow (Jerry); one son, Preston Robinson (Christina); 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; his mother, Elnora Pollard; three sisters, Lena Redmon, Thelma Pollard and Nancy Burrell (Eric); three brothers, Moses Pollard, Harold Burrell and Timothy Burrell (Suzanne); nine sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; one aunt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service was held March 31 at New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Woods Cross Roads. Interment was in the church cemetery with military rites.
Dan Kavanagh Jr.
Joseph Daniel “Dan” Kavanagh Jr. of Buxton, N.C., formerly of Hardyville, passed away May 28, 2014. Dan was born on June 4, 1949 in Bay City, Mich., to Joseph Daniel Sr. (deceased) and Alicia (Finn) Kavanagh. Dan met the love of his life, Regena (Pugh), while attending Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and they were married
in 1969.
Dan retired as Executive Director of The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission and found more time for his love of cooking, motorcycle riding, restoration and repair, boat building, hunting, fishing and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Dan loved the outdoors and his greatest accomplishment as a public servant was the formation of the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority for the express purpose of providing access to public lands and waterways to the citizens of the Middle Peninsula, the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.
In addition to his father, Dan was preceded in death by his grandson, Lee Perry Kavanagh; brothers, William P Kavanagh Sr. and Dudley J Kavanagh II; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Kavanagh; and nephew, William P Kavanagh Jr.
Dan is survived by his wife Regena of Buxton, N.C.; his sons, Joseph (Natalie) D. Kavanagh III of Frisco, N.C. and William (Carole) J. Kavanagh of Henrico; his grandchildren, Joseph IV, Thomas and Patrick of Frisco, N.C., and Campbell, Carson and Carlie of Henrico; his special girl and hunting companion, Gypsy; one brother, five sisters and their spouses; and a number of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held June 26 in Hatteras, N.C., with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority, 125 Bowden Street, Saluda, VA 23149; or the Outer Banks Preservation Association, P.O. Box 1355, Buxton, NC 27920.
David E. Shreeves
David Edward (Skip) Shreeves, 53, of Waynesboro, Pa., after eight months battle with pancreatic cancer, accepted Heaven as his final change of address on Sunday, November 13, 2011.
He is survived by his parents George David and Dale Rochelle Shreeves; three sons, Corey, Kyle and Collin Shreeves; and two best friends and caretakers, Jody Becker and Dave Kolbfleisch.
Skip was preceded in death by grandparents, Ed and June Dockeney of Martinsburg, W.Va., and David Elzie and Nettie (Dudley) Shreeves of Deltaville where he learned to swim at the Ricky Taylor Swimming Pool and enjoyed many vacations boating and fishing.
Skip was a member of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in Virginia and Washington, D.C. His employment positions included associate manager of large stores in two major grocery chains of Rockville and Silver Spring, Md., and regional director of distribution for Coca-Cola in New Jersey and New York.
Celebrations of Skip’s faith, fun and friendships were held at Rosedale cemetery and Winchester Avenue Christian Church in Martinsburg, W.Va. Memorial gifts were designated for American Cancer Society, East Central Division, Franklin and Fulton County Unit, 384 Floral Avenue, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
Emma Wilson Davis
Emma Wilson Davis, 86, of Saluda passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013. She was born in Cologne and resided in Middlesex County the rest of her life. Emma was a mother, homemaker and loved to cook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Ray Davis, of 60 years; a sister, Margaret Cullinan; and brothers, Horace and Robert Wilson.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara D. Hodges, Patricia D. Collier and Sandra D. Nuttall; three sisters, Pearl W. Jordan, Inez W. Kuhlmann and Shirley W. Haynes, five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 21, in Forest Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Warner. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda.
Dennis R. Wingfield
Services for Dennis R. Wingfield, who departed this life Monday, July 27, 2015, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 1, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Church View, with Rev. Fred D. Holmes Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.
The viewing will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 31, at J.K. Redmond Funeral Home, Shacklefords. The family will assemble at the home at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. Wingfield is survived by his children, Sarah Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Beverley Wingfield and Quentin Wingfield; five sisters, Paulette, Doris, Evon, Patricia and Denise; one brother, Ronnie Wingfield; stepmother, Ora Wingfield; four stepbrothers, Ezeal, Clarence, Leevi and Calvin Bagby; two grandchildren, James Embry IV and Aria Jones; and his beloved companion, Ann South.
Don R. Boughton
Don Raymond Boughton, 73, of Saluda died Thursday, June 18, 2015. He was the owner and operator of Middlesex Stock Shop and Taxidermy for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Saluda Baptist Church.
He is survived by his brothers, William E. Boughton (Janine) and Percy T. Boughton Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Harmony Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Topping. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday, June 20, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda.
Doris Diane Wingfield
On February 26, 2016 Doris Diane Wingfield entered into eternal peace. Doris was raised and educated in Middlesex County. Doris went into the United States Army where she served a number of years. She then went to work at the Riverside Convalescent Center, West Point. She was a devoted member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and served faithfully on the usher board.
Doris was one of 10 children born to the late Roosevelt Edward Wingfield and Pauline Bernice Ward Wingfield.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Sterling Wingfield and Dennis Wingfield.
Doris leaves to cherish her memory her children, Michael Wingfield (Laura McIntosh), LaQuetta Pierce (Dameon Warren), Latisha Wingfield and Shawn Wingfield; sisters, Paulette of Philadelphia, Pa., and Evon, Patricia and Denise, all of Urbanna; brother, Ronnie Wingfield; stepmother, Ora Wingfield; stepbrothers, Ezeal, Clarence, Leevi and Calvin Bagby; four grandchildren, Treshawn, Dameon Jr., Milton Jr. and Amiya; nieces, nephews, great niece, great nephews and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Church View. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The viewing will be from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at J.K. Redmond Funeral Home, Shacklefords.
Doris Gray Jones
Doris Gray Jones, 85, of Mechanicsville went to be with the Lord, Friday, April 5, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene W. Jones; and daughter, Mary J. Martin.
She is survived by her daughter, June R. Pegram, and her husband Linwood; sons, Bobbie E. Jones, and Mickey L. Jones Sr. and wife, Paulette Wright Jones; seven grandchildren, Frank DeRush, Paula Gaskill, Eugene DeRush, Joseph Pegram, Jessica Pegram, Amy Dunaway and Mickey Jones Jr.; many great-grandchildren; and beloved dog, Duchess.
She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Mechanicsville and loved to fish, sew, and look at the water when they lived in Deltaville. A memorial service will be held later for family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dorothy Groome Lee
Dorothy Groome Lee, 91, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2012. She was born on December 29, 1920, in Remlik, Middlesex County. She was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Maggie Groome, and her husband of 30 years, Webster Rhoads Lee.
She is survived by two children, Tinner Lee Weston and her husband Bruce, and Webster Rhoads Lee Jr. and his wife Mary Ellen. She was also blessed with three grandchildren, Sarah Weston, Rachel Lee and Isaac Lee. She has one surviving sister, Sue DeVaughn of Virginia Beach, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
Dorothy lived in Richmond for many years before moving to the house on her beloved Urbanna Creek. Her passions included gardening, reading and family. She was a lifelong member of Urbanna Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She also was a member of the Middlesex Woman’s Club and the Virginia Yacht Club, and was a docent for the old Middlesex County Museum.
A service will be held at Urbanna Baptist Church on Friday, May 11, at 11 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the church or the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad of Urbanna.
Dorothy Holmes
Dorothy Holmes, 96, died April 27, 2012 at Walter Reed Convalescent Center, Gloucester. She was born in Middlesex County, Healys Road, Locust Hill, on October 14, 1915.
She was predeceased by her parents, Zachariah and Mary Lee Dudley Holmes; brothers, Solomon, Frank and Joshua Holmes; and sisters, Maggie Lee, Lettie Braxton and Estelle Francis.
She is survived by one brother, John N. Holmes of Saluda; nieces, Julia Graham, Velma Lee, Venita Rhoden, Mary Braxton Joseph, Herella Pennamon, Hallie Holmes, Beverley Cannon and Billie Braxton; nephews, Jerry Lee, Joshua Holmes Jr. and Elmore Holmes; and great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great-nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 5. The viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Saluda.
Dorothy M. Topping
Dorothy Moore Topping, 99, of Deltaville passed away peacefully on February 27, 2015 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Everette Topping; her parents, Elzie David Moore and Almedia Moffitt Moore; and maternal cousin, Margaret Moffitt Robins, who was like a close sister to Dorothy.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Topping (James T. Lindley), Paulette Topping, and Paul Everette Topping; two grandchildren, Michael and Paul Lewis; and two great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was a housewife and stay-at-home mother until the death of her husband in February 1959. Knowing that she had to raise three children alone, she attended and graduated from business school, eventually retiring from the Middlesex County Health Department. She was a wonderful mother to Sharon, Paulette, and Everette, and as they matured into adults, she became their best friend. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends to such places as Canada, Mexico, New Orleans, Germany, Switzerland, and many others, but best of all she enjoyed shopping. “Shopping until you drop” didn’t apply to Dorothy since she kept going and going just like the Energizer Bunny.
She had a strong faith in God and in her youth attended Philippi Christian Church with her mother. Later in life, Dorothy became a member of Clarksbury Methodist Church with her husband and children. Of all things she loved, Deltaville was at the top of her list. She believed it was the only place to live, and she never missed an opportunity to brag about Deltaville to everyone she met. Consequently, she, along with her husband, were very active at the local and state levels particularly the Deltaville Community Association (DCA), formerly the Deltaville Improvement Association.
After her husband’s death, she continued her DCA involvement, becoming one of the driving forces behind the 4th of July Parade, the Ricky Taylor Memorial Pool, and the Deltaville Calendar. She also was a great supporter of the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Nature Park, attending many meetings, farmers’ markets, dinners, and concerts. Due to her participation in Deltaville events, she was selected to serve as one of the Grand Marshals in the Deltaville Heritage Day Parade.
A celebration of Dorothy Topping’s life will be held Tuesday, March 3, at Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the service starting at 11 a.m. A catered lunch will be served afterwards in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be in the Norris cemetery in Deltaville.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Lower Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, and Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park.
E. Randolph Redmon
Elliott Randolph “Randy” Redmon, 52, of Urbanna was born on December 4, 1961 in Richmond. He lived in Urbanna from childhood until his death from a car accident on November 29, 2014.
He attended York Academy and graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy in 1980. He was a skilled craftsman, carpenter, and marine contractor. He was passionate about sports, especially golf and football. He won several local golf tournaments and was most proud of being the 2002 Mercedes Championships Washington Regional Winner. He was a volunteer coach for the Middlesex youth football and youth basketball leagues.
Those who knew Randy knew his smile, his big bare feet, and his kind heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Elena “Katy” Redmon, and his father, Elliott Edgar Redmon Jr.
He is survived by his two sons, Elliott Randolph Redmon II and Thomas Elliott Redmon. His boys were his greatest accomplishments and his love for them immeasurable. Other family members include his mother, Betty Richardson; stepmother, Lucille Redmon; sisters, Kathy Beale and her husband McKim, Sherri Kirwin and her husband Bob, Dr. Julie Redmon and her husband Rich Haugg; his brother, Jason Elmer; stepsisters, Carol Zimmerman and husband Larry, and Bonnie Green and husband Pettis; and stepbrother, Martin Richardson. His nieces and nephews include Louis Palumbo, Courtney Beale, Marika Beale, Kaitlyn Kirwin, Kendall Kirwin, Eli Haugg and Lyla Haugg. Other special people in Randy’s life were his aunt and uncle, Pat and Richard Marshall, dear friends Tammy and Melinda Putney, and his “second brother, ” Alan Sutherlin.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 12, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13, at Urbanna United Methodist Church.

Earl T. Collier
Earl T. Collier, 86, of Saluda died Monday, October 13, 2008.
He was a WWII Army veteran and is survived by his wife of 56 years, Edith Greggs Collier; two daughters, Brenda C. Brown of Saluda and Sandra Kay Collier of Chester; one sister, Velma Goodwin of Richmond; two grandchildren, Robert Joseph Brown Jr. of Gloucester and Meagan R. Brown of Saluda; one great-grandson, Robert J. Brown III of Gloucester; his aunt, Annie Fary of Cologne; and his best friend, Tinker Bell.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in New Hope United Methodist Church, Gloucester. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors.
