Alexander “Johnny” Hodges II
Alexander Hodges II, affectionately called “Johnny, ” was born July 13, 1944 in Saluda to Alexander and Lillie Iona Yarbrough Hodges. He was the second born of six children. Johnny was called away suddenly on Friday, July 10, 2015 from his home on Burrell’s Marina Road, three days before his 71st birthday.
Alexander Hodges II married
Barbara Lee Burrell on July 18, 1964, and from that union two children were born: Antonio Hodges I and Lolita Rena Hodges. Antonio has one son, Antonio Hodges II. Lolita married
Quincey Levi Burrell and they have two children, Jennifer Lee and Joshua Levi Burrell. Johnny had one other daughter, Tracey Vallarde (Hawaii).
He was preceded in death by his father, Alexander Hodges Sr.; a son-in-law, Quincey Levi Burrell.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Lillie Hodges Braxton; a wife, Barbara Burrell; a son, Antonio Hodges I; a daughter, Lolita Rena Hodges; sisters, Callie Avis Dugas of Beaumont, Texas, Mary Corrine Pearson (Donald) of Newark, Del., and Gloria Jean Holmes (James) of Urbanna; a brother, Stanley McKinley Hodges (Carolyn) of Dale City; grandsons, Antonio Hodges Jr., and Joshua Levi Burrell; a granddaughter, Jennifer Lee Burrell; four great-grandchildren, Mia Nyrese Brokenbrough, Tia Lee-Grace Hodges, and Anthony Tony and Anise Lillian Hodges (twins).
Johnny was baptized at Immanuel Baptist Church at an early age. He loved God, had a working knowledge of the Bible, which he read often. He had the hope that his love for God would outweigh his fleshly attempt to live an exemplary life. He believed in the teaching that we are saved by Grace. His hope is in the Mercy of the God he loved.
Johnny attended Middlesex schools completing 10th grade before taking a job at a sawmill located off Town Bridge Road behind his birth place at the intersection of State Routes 615 and 616, the intersection known as Hodges Corner.
His second job was working the water on a boat operating tongs and dredging. He left that job and joined his Father Alex, Grandfather Nelson Hodges, and John Acree at the Lord Mott Canning Factory on Urbanna Creek. There he worked for 14 years as a processor monitoring pressure on the cooking kettles, and as a crane operator.
Johnny left Lord Mott and went to work at the Newport News Shipyard as a chipper. He used a loud chipping gun to chip iron. Nobody liked the job but he did it. One day he took the loud gun back to the shop and asked for carbonic rods to replace the chipping gun. He later went back and asked for Double D irons and welder instead. These decisions promoted him from a chipper to a carbonizer to a welder. When he left the shipyard seven years later he was welding, not just anywhere, but overhead. This is more difficult to master because the hot cinders drop on the welder. He said he set himself on fire several times. He was on his way to being a welding supervisor over 7 to 8 men but unfortunate events cut his career short. Johnny said he left the shipyard when he became a man.
When he returned to work it was for Clyde Thrift at Exxon Oil Company where he worked for 14 years. He drove the oil truck, worked at the Exxon gas stations in Urbanna, Deltaville and Gloucester Point, as a mechanic, changing tires and doing routine maintenance. Johnny was featured in an Exxon newspaper article.
Johnny’s final job before retiring was with Larry Shores. He worked 12 years with Larry. His first duties were those of a waterman. Johnny ran boats and set crab pots. He left the water and moved to Larry’s boat-lift business. He helped Larry build boat lifts at the East Coast Boat Lifts company.
“I did some things right and I did some wrong. Remember me for what I did right, ” said Johnny.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, at J.K. Redmond Funeral Home. Interment will be in Immanuel Baptist Church cemetery, Saluda.
