Cleo Marie Bradley
Cleo Marie Bradley, 77, of North Tazewell, died May 7, 2006 at a Bristol, TN, hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Amonate, she was a daughter of the late Homer and Blanch Shrader Altizer.
She had made her home at North Tazewell and was a loving housewife. She was a member of the Appalachian Agency of Senior Citizens and also Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church, Canebrake, WV.
She was the widow of Harold Bradley. In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Verlin Altizer, and one nephew, Larry Karnes.
Survivors: sister, Catherine Karnes of Baptist Valley, with whom she made her home; sister-in-law, Ann Altizer of Abingdon; two nieces; five nephews; and a host of friends.
The funeral will be conducted May 11 at 1 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with Rev. Darrell Long officiating.
Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA.
The family request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 67, Berwind, WV 24815.
Friends may call at the funeral home May 11 from noon till time of the funeral service.
Lizzie Melinda Dye
Lizzie Melinda Dye, 87, of Oakwood, died May 6, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Mar. 10, 1919 in Swords Creek, she was a daughter of the late Ira and Tiny Perkins Miller.
She was raised in the Swords Creek area and had lived in Buchanan County since 1940. She was a member of the Guiding Light Freewill Baptist Church at Mavisdale.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Quinton Edward Dye; one daughter, Rose Marie Dye; five brothers, Claude Miller, Bazzie Miller, Carlos (Pete) Miller, Harley (Penny) Miller and Glenn (Doc) Miller; and three sisters, Minnie Hubbard, Elsie Miller, and Hazel Taylor.
Survivors: husband of 63 years, Rev. James Edward Dye; sons, Millard Dye and wife, Peggy, Harold Dye and wife, Rita, and Wade Dye and fiancée, Pam, all of Oakwood, Bruce Dye and wife, Rose, of Patterson; daughter-in-law, Norma Dye of Oakwood; brother, Junior Miller of Honaker; sister, Gladys Ray of Swords Creek; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. May 10 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Troy Harris and Rev. Sonny Perkins officiating.
Interment will follow in the Wilson cemetery at Drill.

John W. Gephart, Jr.
John W. Gephart, Jr., Captain with the Virginia State Police, died May 6, 2006 at his home in New Kent, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Captain Gephart was born Aug. 24, 1946 in Quincy, FL.
He began his career with the Virginia State Police as a trooper in July 1974. In his 32-year career, he served numerous positions, the last being the Division Commander of the Criminal Intelligence Division.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Gephart Sr. and Kathryn B. Gephart.
Survivors: loving wife, Vickie A. Gephart; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Michael Mason of Stephens City, and their daughter, Ashley; daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and Michael Buzzard of Richmond and their sons, Eric and Riley; stepson, Samuel E. Davis of New Kent; sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Michael Cox of Headland, AL; sister and brother-in-law, CeCe and Charlie Barr of Chipley, FL; sister, Debbie Benton of Tallahassee, FL; along with many loving aunts, nieces, nephews and extended family members.
The funeral was conducted May 9 at Fairmount Christian Church in Mechanicsville at 11 a.m. with Lt. Steve Lambert officiating.
Interment was at Washington Memorial Park.
Nelsen Funeral Home in Richmond was in charge of arrangements.
Raymond Hart
Raymond Hart, 70, of the Baptist Valley area of North Tazewell, died May 8, 2006 at his home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell.
Dewey Johnson
Dewey Johnson, 66, of Honaker, died May 3, 2006 at a Lebanon hospital.
Born May 26, 1939 in Council, he was a son of the late Ezra and Mary Ball Johnson.
A lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Russell County areas, he attended the Freewill Baptist Church. He was formerly employed as a fitter welder for Simmons-Rand for 23 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Johnson and Gilmer Johnson, and three sisters, Lovis Whitt, Trula Lowe and Willmer Johnson.
Survivors: wife, Glenna Johnson; daughter, Teresa Whitt of Cedar Bluff; son and daughter-in-law, Butch and Brenda Fitzgerald of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Joseph Whitt and Morgan Fitzgerald; brothers, Daniel Johnson of Jewell Ridge, Ashby Johnson of Ohio; sisters, Fonnie Baldwin and Wanda Johnson, both of Council, Beulah Whitt of Jewell Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. May 6 in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Elijah Johnson
Elijah Johnson, 84, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died May 2, 2006 in a Bristol, TN, hospital.
Born June 5, 1921 in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Eshmel and Canzada Stevens Johnson.
He had spent most of his life in the area and was of the Free Will Baptist faith. He was a veteran with the United States Army, having served during World War II. He was a retired coal miner, having been employed by U.S. Steel and was a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Attley Johnson, Lonnie Johnson, Aubrey Johnson, Herman Johnson, and Rufus Johnson.
Survivors: wife, Eva Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Paul Howard Lester of Council; grandson, Eric Nicholas Johnson of Council; brothers, Ellis Johnson of Bluefield, Kermit Johnson of Tazewell, Daniel Johnson of Honaker; sister, Lethia Johnson Hale of Tazewell; special caregiver, Shirley O’Quinn; special nurses, Jennifer Taylor, Edna Honeycutt, and Brenda Duty; and one special aide, Patty Cook.

Joan Hale Street
Joan Hale Street, 69, of Route 1, Lebanon, went to meet the Lord May 4, 2006 at the Hospice House at Wellmont in Bristol, TN.
Born Oct. 18, 1936 in Council, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Hazel Ball Hale.
She had lived most of her life in the Southwest Virginia area, but she also spent a number of years in Nashville, TN. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend who will be sorely missed by those who love her. She greeted the world with a big smile and kind words.
Survivors: husband of 53 years, Donald Street; son, Donald Street, Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Nashville; granddaughters, Leslie Street and Kelley Street, both of Nashville; brother, Jerald Hale of Council; sister, Donna Hale and husband, J.C., of Council; special nephew, Gregory Hale and wife, Tina, of Council; special niece, Sharon Davis of Oakwood; special grandniece, Tonya Buchanan of Lebanon; special great-grandniece, AliGrace Buchanan of Lebanon; sisters-in-law, Draper Street, Darlis Street, and Georgia Street; special friends, Lynda Hamm, Janie Hale, Joyce Lambert, Debbie Lockhart, Harold and Audrey Compton, and Deane Bostic who helped so much during her illness; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and members of her Rosedale Baptist Church family.

Darlene Proffitt Ball
Darlene Proffitt Ball, 55, of the Kents Ridge Road section of Cedar Bluff, died May 19, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born at Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Ocie Belle Davis Proffitt.
She was a member of Freedom Ministries.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Carl Andrew Ball; two brothers, Chester Proffitt and Brady Proffitt.
Survivors: husband, Carl Hassell Ball; daughter, Cheryl Bishop and husband, Robert, of Cedar Bluff; sisters Ruth James and husband, Emory, of Davenport, Beatrice Gilbert and husband, Henry, of Claypool Hill, Georgia Brown of Keen Mountain, Jean Dye of Doran; brothers, Melvin Proffitt and wife, Pauline, and Charlie Proffitt, all of Red Ash, Hubert Proffitt of Whitewood; grandchildren, Dustin Carty, Tristan Carty, Alex Ball and Evan Ball.

Henry (Dick) Belcher
Henry F. (Dick) Belcher, 87, of Richlands, died May 21, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.
Born in Richlands, he was the son of the late Dixie Flemming Belcher and Gladys Graham Barrett Belcher.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William Belcher, Kenneth Belcher and Harry (Bubba) Belcher, and one sister, Lavonia Johnson.
He was a U.S. Army-Air Force Veteran of WW II.
Survivors: sisters, Betty June Osborne of Port Orchard, WA, and Nancy Lee York of Fontana, CA.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. May 25 at the Hankins cemetery in Richlands with Rev. Stafford Compton officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Veterans Honor Guard Association, Inc.
Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff is serving the family.
Charity A. Blankenship
Charity Abigail Horn Blankenship, 91, of the Paintlick section of Pounding Mill, died May 16, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born Nov. 3, 1914 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William and Susie Vandyke Horn. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Jay Blankenship, Sr.; four brothers, Harrison Horn, Hoover Horn, Coy Horn and Howard Horn; two sisters, Nelly Keen and Polly Horn; one grandson, Jerry Clifton; one great granddaughter, Alexis Blankenship; and one son-in-law, Harold Clifton.
