Velma F. Payne, 81 Fulks Run Velma Ferne Payne, 81, a resident of 5894 Hopkins Gap Road, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at Oak Lea Nursing Home where she had been a resident for one month. Mrs. Payne was born on January 19, 1927 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Philip Irvin and Goldie Mae Kirkpatrick Carr. She was a homemaker who loved to have a family gathering at her home every week. She was a member of Mt. Clinton Church of God. On May 14, 1947 she married
Thomas Payne Jr., who survives. Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter Sandra Kaye Garber, Dayton; one son Stanley Eugene Payne, Harrisonburg; three brothers, Emory Wayne Carr, and Norman C. Carr, both of Harrisonburg and Carter H. Carr, Shippensburg, Pa.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Pastors Michael Fallin and Paul “Jim” Rodgers will conduct a funeral service Wednesday morning 11 a.m. at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Gospel Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Herbert M. Stroop

Herbert M. Stroop, 86 Singers Glen Herbert Makelvine Stoop, 86, a resident of 8209 Frank Lane, Singers Glen, died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Manassas Nursing and Rehab Center. Mr. Stroop was born on October 30, 1921 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Charles Edward and Martha Custer Stroop. He was the owner and operator of Stoop’s Sawmill. In September 1945, he married
Mildred Stawser of Singers Glen who survives. Surviving are one daughter, Linda Chapman, Manassas; and two granddaughters. Rev. Paul Glovier will conduct a funeral service Thursday afternoon 2 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Trissel’s cemetery. John P. Ruppe

John P. Ruppe, 65 Harrisonburg John P. Ruppe, 65, a resident of Harrisonburg died October 26, 2008. Mr. Ruppe was born on November 12, 1942, in Passaic, New Jersey and was the son of the late Ernest E. and Olga Christofersen Ruppe. In High School, he was valedictorian and an Eagle Scout. He taught English at the University of Wyoming and several other colleges, was a carpenter for 15 years and was a careful writer. He prided himself on forging ahead, plugging along, and finishing what he started. He ran four marathons in mid-life all under three hours (New York, Boston, Golden Gate, Oakland) and continued to hike and camp. He served as a trail maintainer with the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club in the Shenandoah National Park and spent many happy hours on his trail, the One Mile Run Trail. His trail maintaining, hiking, and camping ended in the Spring of 2008 when he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). As the disease progressed, he could no longer speak or swallow. As his limbs and respiratory system began to fail, his endurance failed, and he took his own life on Sunday, October 26. On April 22, 1995, he married
Jane Hannah Bazuin Ruppe who survives. Also surviving are three step-daughters, Emily E. Bateson, Arlington; Mary A. Bateson, Hampton, and Margaret S. Bateson, Ridgeland, South Carolina; a brother, Erik Ruppé, San Francisco , California. A graveside service will be held Sunday, November 2, 2008 at East Lawn Memorial Gardens at 2p.m with Rev. Diane Barger

Diane M. Fager Barger, 62 Harrisonburg Diane Barger departed this life on Friday, October 31, 2008, after a long illness, and she will be sorely missed. She had a kind heart, a wry sense of humor, and a sincere desire to help others. She was the daughter of Harold and Mae Fager, now deceased, who owned and operated Fager’s Grocery in Middletown for more than forty years. Diane graduated from Middletown Area High School in 1964 and went on to Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse. She earned an Undergraduate degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing form the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Diane was a dedicated and accomplished professional who enjoyed a challenging a rewarding career path, the majority of which was spent in psychiatric nursing, that took her to various localities in several states including, Charlottesville, Virginia; Iowa City, Iowa; Middletown, Pennsylvania; Hazard, Kentucky; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and ultimately to Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she has lived for and worked since 1998. During the course of her career, she as worked as a nurse, taught at the university level, and held hospital administrative positions. Diane loved animals and had special concern for homeless cats. She spent her leisure time enjoying the company of friends, family, and her three cats, reading making jewelry, and painting in the watercolor medium. She was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Watercolor Society. Her professional organization memberships include: The American Nursing Association, The American Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, The International Society of Psychiatric Mental Health Nurses’, and Sigma Theta Ta. Diane is survived by an uncle, Ralph Weirich, two aunts, Ruth Weirich, and Norma Weirich, many cousins and friends, and her three cats who are all privileged to have shared her life. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. followed immediately by the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at Frank E. Matincheck and Daughter Funeral Home, 260 East Main Street, Middletown, Pa. 17057.

Wayne A. Moyers, 67 Linville Wayne Arthur Moyers, 67, a resident of 6396 Wengers Mill Road, Linville, died November 1, 2008 at his home. Mr. Moyers was born on September 1, 1941 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Joseph Luther and Pauline Sherman Moyers. After graduating, in 1961, he worked for C.S. Mundy Quarry and later K &H; Poultry in Linville. He enjoyed hunting and the great outdoors. He was a member of N.RA., North American Hunting Club, North American Fishing Club, Bowhunters Haven and Mt. Zion Church of the Brethren. On January 27, 1962, he married
the former Elizabeth Ann Dean who survives. Also surviving are, three daughters, Debra Dove and Tina Milstead, both of Linville, Stephanie Moyers, Grottoes; four brothers, Earl Moyers, Standardsville, Carroll Moyers, Linville, Leon Moyers and Eugene Moyers, both of Harrisonburg, four sisters, Lucille Reedy, Linville, Louise Mitchell, Bridgewater, Nancy Simmons, Grottoes, Doris Carter, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Anthony Wheelbarger, Brittany Wheelbarger, Cassie Dispanet, Vanessa Dove, Miranda Milstead, Heather Shumaker, and Natasha Shumaker. Leland Oswald, 86 Harrisonburg Leland Oswald, 86, a resident of 1285 Shank Drive, died Monday, October 13, 2008, at Oak Lea Nursing Home. Mr. Oswald was born on September 19, 1922 in Strang, Nebraska and was the son of the late Christian and Elizabeth Birky Oswald. Mr. Oswald worked as a farmer and later was the farm manager for the University of Nebraska. He served as a minister in Lincoln, Nebraska, Oklahoma and North Carolina. He later worked in Fredericksburg as a church planter and as a realtor. He devoted his life to church work and enjoyed mentoring young pastors. In 1999, he retired to the Harrisonburg area where he continued to be involved as a member of the Park View Mennonite Church. On February 17, 1946, he married
the former Doretta Miller who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Joan Kulp, and husband James, Middletown; Jane Yoder and husband Dave, Lancaster, Pa.; one son, Donald Oswald, and wife Jean, Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren, Emily Oswald, Peter Oswald, Ben Yoder, Matt Yoder, Christina Kulp, and Carlin Kulp. Mr. Oswald was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin, Paul, and Emanuel Oswald; and five sisters, Dorothy Schweitzer, Katherine Oswald, Mary Kauffman, Sarah Kauffman, Rhoda Oswald. Robert F. May, 88 Singers Glen Robert “Bob” Franklin May, 88, a resident of 5095 Snapps Creek Road, died October 3, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. May was born on June 11, 1920 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Walker H. Sr. and Ruth Bowman May. Mr. May served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a farmer and also County Assessor for Western Rockingham County for 30 years until his retirement in 1987. He worked as an insurance salesman for Rockingham Mutual Insurance for 22 years. Mr. May was an active member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 32 years and was a church trustee. He was a member of the Singers Glen Golden Age Club, and the West Rockingham Ruritan Club for over 30 years. He and his wife were member of the Grand Promenade Square Dance Club. On April 17, 1943, he married
the former Virginia F. Richie who survives. Ruby S. Dove, 91 Linville Ruby Swank Dove, 91, a resident of 8079 Green Hill Road, Linville died October 8, 2008 at her home. Mrs. Dove was born on September 17, 1917, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Louis and Effie Hopkins Swank. She spent her life in the Linville area where she worked as a beautician. She was an active member of the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday School Secretary, Trustee, sang in the church choir, and was active in the United Methodist Women. On September 17, 1939, she married
John P. Dove who preceded her in death October 16, 1962. Surviving are her daughter, Susan Huffman and husband, Larry, Linville; one sister, Ava Gowl, Harrisonburg; grandchildren, Larry Huffman, Jr. and wife, Laura and Shari Payne and husband Craig; two great grandsons, Christopher Payne and Joshua Payne. Mrs. Dove was preceded in death by five sisters, Dorothy Swank, Lois Myers, Ruth Swank, Winifred Alvarez and Edna Rolston and three brothers, Glen Swank, Reuel Swank and Wilmer Swank. Rev. Robert W. Smith, Jr. will conduct a memorial service Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are one sister, Elizabeth Alchinskaya; two daughters, Svetlana Gruschenko, Olga Popov; four sons, Leonid Mazur, Nikolay Mazur, Peter Mazur, and Oleg Mazur; nineteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Lawrence E. Williams, 84 Dayton Lawrence Elbert Williams, 84, a resident of 5083 Sandbriar Lane, Dayton, died October 3, 2008 at his home. Mr. Williams was born on September 19, 1924 in Mount Sidney and was a son of the late Miley Craun and Ruth Shaver Williams. He served in the United States Army Air Corp. He was a member of the Valley RC Flying Club and Clover Hill Senior Citizens Group. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church. the former Hester Mowery, who survives. Lee E. Emswiler, 93 Harrisonburg Lee E. Emswiler, 93, a resident of Sunnyside Retirement Community, died November 3, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Emswiler was born on July 2, 1915 in Linville, Virginia and was the son of the late Wheeler Oscar and Annie Leoda (Oda) Hosaflook Emswiler. He was a farmer all of his life and worked at the Stehli Silk Mill, two local hatcheries and at the Rockingham Poultry Shipping Department. He enjoyed spending time with his family and gardening. Mr. Emswiler was a lifetime member of the Linville United Methodist Church. On August 10, 1936, he married
the former Reba Layman who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Rose and husband Lewis, Laurel, Maryland; Carol Wilson and husband Keith, Weyers Cave; one son, Larry Emswiler and wife, Roxanne, Harrisonburg; two foster daughters, Anna Black and Mary Hoover; three sisters, Lena Zirk, Harrisonburg; Florence Green, Harrisonburg; Myrtle Filler, Waynesboro; one brother, Robert Emswiler, Dayton; seven grandchildren, Kevin Rose, Leigh Ann Rose, Brandy Emswiler, Brandon Emswiler and wife, Ginger, Bryan Wilson, Meredith Wilson, and Sara Wilson. Lowell E. Ulrich, 59 Dayton Lowell Ulrich, 59, a resident of 314 Bank Church Road, Dayton died Saturday September 27, 2008 from injuries sustained in a tractor accident while working in the woods on his farm. Mr. Ulrich was born on September 12, 1949 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Richard D. and Elva I. Martin Ulrich. He worked for Zion Productions and on his farm raising poultry, sheep and cattle. He was a member of the Cornerstone Church of Broadway. He received his Masters of Divinity from Eastern Mennonite Seminary in 1973 and was an assistant pastor at the Woodland Mennonite Church in Basye, Virginia during most of the 1970’s. On August 19, 1972 he married
the former Joyce Wenger who survives. Also surviving are numerous cousins and friends. Pastors Tim Martin, Jim Hess, and Rick Martin will conduct a memorial service, Friday, October 5, 2008, 10 a.m. at Weaver’s Mennonite Church. Burial will be private. Joan M. Droms, 78 Harrisonburg Joan Audrey Droms, 78, died November 26, 2010 at Oak Lea Nursing Home where she had been a resident. Mrs. Droms was born on March 19, 1932, in Erie, Pennsylvania and was the daughter of the late Nevin and Stella Etter Mosier. Mrs. Droms lived in Schenectady, New York until 1970 and then spent 35 years in Leominster, Massachusetts. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and was a volunteer at the hospital guild. Mrs. Droms moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community two and a half years ago. On August 25, 1951, she married
Ernest Droms who preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons, Carl Droms and companion, Adrie Voors, Harrisonburg; Kurt Droms, St. Louis, Missouri; two grandchildren, Sean Droms and Erin Droms.
