Nellie H. Early, 97 Harrisonburg Nellie Heatwole Early, 97, a resident of 1475 Virginia Avenue died Tuesday, August 04, 2009 at Oak Lea Nursing. She previously resided at 540 Dale Enterprise Road, in Dayton until she moved to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in 2005 Mrs. Early was born on December 19, 1911 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Amos D. and Sallie Johnson Heatwole. She spent her entire life in the western Rockingham County. She worked Stehli Silkmill for a short time. She greatly enjoyed sewing, and especially quilting and she donated many items to the Mennonite Relief. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of Dayton Mennonite Church we she was a member of the sewing circle. On September 23, 1933, she married Samuel S. Early who preceded her in death on June 18, 2008. Surviving are two sons, Sheldon H. and wife Sandra Kay Green Early, Dennis R. and wife Patricia Riddel Early all of Dayton; one grandson, Robert Samuel (Sammy) Early and wife Kim Smith Early of Bridgewater; three great-grandchildren, Katelyne Renee, Sidney Nichole and Bryar S. Mason Early all of Bridgewater; one sister Mrs. Winston (Dorothy) Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by five sisters, Mrs. William (Cleda) Keller, Mrs. John (Zelda) Rohrer, Mrs. Weaver (Nina) Layman, Mrs. Harold (Arlene) Eshelman, Mrs. Robert (Ethel) Good and one brother, Herman W. Heatwole. Pastor Daryl Driver will conduct a memorial service on Thursday morning, July 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dayton Mennonite Church. Burial will be private prior to the memorial service for immediate family and nieces and nephews at 9:30 a.m. at Dayton Mennonite cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dayton Mennonite Church, P.O. Box 401, Dayton, Va. 22821 or Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community Compassion Endowment Fund, 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, Va. 22802-9972.

Nellie B. Tudor

Nellie B. Tudor, 85 Dayton Nellie Bernice Shifflet Tudor, 85, of Dayton died July 21, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs Tudor was born on April 13, 1924, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Leslie N. and Ruth Baker Shifflet of Dayton. She was employed by Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Shen Valley Meat Processors and Bears Bakery in Broadway. She was a member of the Dayton Mennonite Church. On October 1, 1967, she married Robert Lee Tudor who preceded her in death on February 1, 1974. Surviving are a niece Delores Knott, Mount Solon; a nephew, Robert B. (Tiny) Orebaugh, New Market. Mrs. Tudor was preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte Wanger and Reba Jean Orebaugh. Pastors Willard Heatwole and Herman Reitz will conduct a funeral service Monday afternoon at 2p.m. at the Dayton Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at Weavers cemetery. The family receive friends Sunday evening from six until seven at the McMullen Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Saturday.

Betty J. Reedy

Betty J. Reedy, 68 Harrisonburg Mrs. Betty J. Reedy, 68, of Mt. Clinton went to be with the lord on July 24, 2009 at 3:05 a.m. She was home at the time of passing. Betty was born in Rockingham County on January 11, 1941 and was a member of Morning View Mennonite Church. She was one of ten children, born to the late Roy G. Turner and Nellie Turner Holbert of Linville. She worked a while at Dairy Queen in Harrisonburg, Virginia, then she became a cook at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community and she enjoyed it greatly. Mrs. Reedy was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years Willard E.S. Reedy, two brothers, Roy Lee and Billy Turner, and one sister Hazel Gibson. Surviving are six children, three sons, three daughters, Janie Shaffer of Mt. Jackson, Brenda Dawson of Crimora, Willard Reedy and wife Mona, Jacob Reedy and wife Linda of Mt. Clinton, Nelson Reedy and wife Theresa of Singers Glen, Debbie Dean and husband Larry of Fulks Run. Also surviving are five sisters, Gay Mitchell and husband Jimmy of Penn Laird, Patsy Mayle and husband Bill of Verona, Peggy Bowman and husband Byrl of Port Republic, Franches Delp of Winchester and Jean Collins of Easton, Maryland. Also surviving are nineteen grandchildren, and twenty three great-grandchildren. Pastors Ric Gullman, Dwight Heatwole, and Harold Emswiler will conduct a graveside service Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Rockingham Memorial Hospital Hospice, 235 Cantrell Avenue, Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or to the Morning View Mennonite Church, P.O. Box 27, 10116 Morning View Road, Singers Glen, Va. 22850.

Roy L. Lloyd

Roy Lloyd, 91 Singers Glen Roy Lee Lloyd, 91, a resident of 8018 Peter Driver Lane, Singers Glen, died Thursday, June 4, 2009 at his home. Mr. Lloyd was born on April 11, 1918 in Spotsylvania, Virginia and was the son of the late Elza W. and Martha Brooks Lloyd. Since the age of 13, Mr. Lloyd was raised in the home of John F. and Mary Spitzer Wampler. He owned and operated Glen Valley Dairy Farm. He was a member of Fairview Church of the Brethren where he served as congregational song leader, treasurer and deacon. On June 12, 1945, he married the former Ogretta Carr who survives. Also surviving are one son, Larry Lloyd and wife Nancy of Singers Glen; one daughter, Catherine Arehart and husband Ronald of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Louise Stitzer and Grace Hicks, both of Richmond; six grandchildren, Kevin Lloyd, Mark Lloyd, Melinda Lloyd, Steven Lloyd, Tina Campbell, Gregory Arehart; thirteen great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Mr. Lloyd was preceded in death by four brothers, Rodney Lloyd, Elmo Lloyd, Ernest Lloyd, Woodrow Lloyd and three sisters, Elsie Wingfield, Carol Willis, and Fern Conley. Reverends Walt Crull and Jim Hall will conduct a funeral service, Monday, June 8, 2009, 11:00 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Greenmount cemetery. Lorene L. Miller

Lorene L. Miller, 92 Harrisonburg Lorene Lam Miller, 92, a resident of Loyalton died June 11, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Miller was born on March 16, 1917 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Tracey Smith Lam. And the step daughter of the late Vera Ritchie Lam. She spent her life in the Harrisonburg area. She was employed by J. Ney’s and then was employed at Alfred Ney’s for 25 years. She was a member of the Greenmount Church of the Brethren. On December 20, 1941, she married L.W. (Bill) Miller who preceded her in death on January 30, 2008. Surviving is one sister, Doris Combs and husband Harry, Woodstock; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Bowman, Harrisonburg, a brother-in-law, Statten Echard, Harrisonburg; a niece, Donna Nesselrodt and a great nephew Chad Nesselrodt and caregiver, Jay Shoemaker. Preceded in death by a two sisters, Catherine Echard, Effie Wampler and a brother, Howard Lam. Rev. Ken Dolan and Sheila Wallace will conduct a graveside service Saturday morning at 11a.m. at East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg at any time. Kent A. Rhodes

Kent A. Rhodes, 44 Harrisonburg Kent Anthony Rhodes, 44, a resident of 3546 Amberly Road, Harrisonburg, died Friday, July 3, 2009. Mr. Rhodes was born on December 5, 1964 in Rockingham County and was the son of Winston E. and Brenda Shifflett Rhodes. He was a crane operator for Dean Steal, Harmon Construction, Cave Hill and Top Bead. He loved hunting, fishing, and was an avid outdoorsmen and loved making jerky. He very much enjoyed mechanics and was more than willing to help everyone fix anything. He lived life to its fullest daily. On June 29, 1985, he married the former Vickie Back who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife and parents, are two children, Lance Colby Back and Sheena Nichole Rhodes, both of Harrisonburg; two sisters, Angie Thacker and husband Lynn of Dayton and Amanda Beth Rhodes of Salem. Minister Bob Horn will conduct a funeral service Tuesday, July 7, 2009 afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Gospel Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frances I. Shifflett

Frances I. Shifflett, 85 Harrisonburg Frances Irene Shifflett, 85, of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, July 08, 2009 after a courageous battle with heart problems at Avante Nursing Home in Harrisonburg. Frances was born on April 7, 1924 in Mount Crawford, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Charlie D. and Stella Pearl Landes Simmers. She retired from Rockingham Memorial Hospital after seventeen years of service. Frances was formerly employed at IMCO Plastic Company in Harrisonburg. In her early years, she was also employed at the Rockingham County Farm Bureau, also in Harrisonburg. Frances dearly loved caring for her grandchildren and cooking for them. In previous years, she was very involved with cooking and doing community activities with the United Methodist Church in Linville. She was married to Marvin M. Shifflett on February 17, 1945 who preceded in her in death on April 19, 1988. Mrs. Shifflett is survived by two daughters, Linda I. Price and Tammy Shifflett Myers; and one son, Marvin L. Shifflett; three brothers, Boyd R. Simmers, Charles J. Simmers, Roy L. Simmers; two sisters, Ivy S. Parr, Catherine S. Diehl; seven grandchildren, Ashley M. Myers, Kaithlyn N. Myers, Michelle L. Turner, Stephanie R. Price, Ryan T. Price, Austin L. Shifflett, James A. Shifflett; and three great-grandchildren, Cody Whetzel, Seth Turner, Reid R. Price. Mrs. Shifflett was preceded in death by four brothers, Wilmer W. Simmers, Melvin W. Simmers, Raymond H. Simmers and Vernon C. Simmers. Pastor Brian Posey will conduct a funeral service, Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Linville cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Roxie W. Hedrick

Roxie W. Hedrick, 88 Harrisonburg Roxie Whetzel Hedrick, 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 with her three beloved daughters by her side, Nancy Hedrick of Harrisonburg, Mobley Padilla of Mt. Crawford, and Donna Wolfe of Mt. Jackson. She is survived by four grandchildren, Tammy Hall and Mitzi Wolfe both of Mt. Jackson, Steve Vigar of Harrisonburg and Barry Vigar of Little River, S.C., five great-grandchildren, Paul Taylor and Christopher Hall of Mt. Jackson, Trent Vigar of Little Rock, S.C., Nicole Vigar of Texas and Ryan Vigar of Harrisonburg.; five great-great grandchildren, Grace Elizabeth Taylor of Mt. Jackson, CamRon Vigar of Harrisonburg; Dakota, Domonick, and Hunter Vigar, of Texas; two nieces, Jean Parks of Mt. Sidney and Lou Ann Whetzel, of Harrisonburg; and family friend, Bonnie Dorman of McGaheysville. She was born on August 28, 1920 in Singers Glen and was the last living of the children of the late Effie and Roy Whetzel. She was preceded in death by her husband J.O. Hedrick and grandson “Rocky” Vigar. She was a life long homemaker and resident of the Harrisonburg area. She moved to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community’s Heritage Haven in 1983 and had lived the past three years at VMRC’s Oak Lea Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel, Harrisonburg, on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 1 p.m. with Pastors Michael Fallin and Paul “Jim” Rodgers officiating. Burial will follow at Singers Glen cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The casket will be closed. Clarence "Bob" Atchison

Clarence E. (Bob) Atchison, 82 Clarence E. (Bob) Atchison, 82, a resident of 5653 Jesse Bennett Way, Linville passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Bridgewater Retirement Community. He was born on May 28, 1927, in Linville, and was the son of the late David Harmon and Lucretia Dean Atchison. Mr. Atchison graduated from Linville-Edom High School. After graduation he served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946 and was stationed in Key West, Florida during World War II. He worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation from 1953 until his retirement in 1989. He was an avid gardener and collector of railroad memorabilia. He was a member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. # 450. He was a member of Edom United Methodist Church. On May 26, 1953, he married the former Gail Stepp, who survives. He is also survived by three children, Kathy Atchison Miller and Tommy of Huntsville, Alabama, D.H. Atchison and Sheila of Harrisonburg, Cindy Atchison Bolan and Joe of Harrisonburg; six grandchildren, Angie Clark Pyles and Daymion, Julie Clark Folsom, Katie Atchison, Emmy Atchison, Jordan Knupp and Emma Knupp; and five great-grandchildren, Hailey, Madison and Brandon Pyles and Keira and Lexi Folsom. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mabel Atchison Holmes, and two brothers, David Franklin and Karal Nelson Atchison. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Mr. Atchison will be cremated and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. at the chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Brian Posey will be officiating. May Bible Shifflett, 91 Harrisonburg May Bible Shifflett, 91, died September 12, 2008 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident. Mrs. Shifflett was born on February 26, 1917 in Rockingham County and was the daughter the late William and Victoria Crawford Morris. She spent her life in the Harrisonburg area and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren. She was first married to Benjamin Bible who preceded her in death and secondly James Shifflett who also preceded her in death Surviving are two daughters June Rasnick and Jean Myers both of Mechanicsville; two sons, Donald E. Bible, McGaheysville; Roger Bible, Bridgewater; and twelve grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janet Bible and three sons, Berlin E. Bible, Stanley Bible and Ronnie Bible. Rev. Kerry Foster will conduct a funeral service Monday afternoon at 2p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Linville cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service, Monday, from 1p.m. until 2p.m. at the funeral home. Robert M. Martin, 83 Harrisonburg Robert Marvin Martin, 83, a resident of 3566 Muddy Creek Road, died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Martin was born on March 27, 1925 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Allen Marvin and Dorothy Liskey Martin. Mr. Martin served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of Carl D. Lee VFW Post 9872. He was self-employed as a truck driver and also worked for Hartman’s Trucking, Truck Thermo-King and Harrisonburg Auto Auction. He was a member of Mount Clinton United Methodist Church. On November 26, 1947, he married the former Mabel Myers who survives. Also surviving are, two daughters Judy M. Baker and husband Billy, Kay Riggleman and husband Bobby, all of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Warren and Nolan Martin, both of Harrisonburg; one sister, Paige Roberson, Warm Springs, Georgia; two grandchildren, Lisa Riggleman, Dee Anna Huffman, and two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Blake Huffman. Mr. Martin was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Martin. Pastor Jack L. Schooler, Wendell “Sonny” Henkel and Reverend Roy Hedrick will conduct a funeral service Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenmount cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Vandevander was born on July 17, 1946 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of Dolly Hartman Moyers, of Dayton and the late Leroy Cave. She was employed at Cargill Poultry and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren. On February 20, 1971, she married Sheldon L. Vandevander, who survives. Surviving in addition to her husband are, three sons, Leroy Cave, Broadway; Tony Cave, Harrisonburg; and Cory Cave, Mt. Jackson; one daughter, Connie Roberts, Crimora; two brothers, Nelson and Ward Cave both of Dayton; four sisters, Doris Hoover, Patsy Baughman, Sarah Whetzel all of Dayton, Patricia Auville, Bridgewater; and seventeen grandchildren. Pastor Henry Elsea, Jr. will conduct a funeral service Friday morning 11:00 a.m. at Briery Branch Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow at Briery Branch cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 8 p.m.at McMullen Funeral Home, in Harrisonburg.
