Daniel Carroll Voorhees
Daniel Carroll Voorhees, 72, of Harrisonburg, died on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at his residence.
Daniel was born on July 22, 1936, in Richmond, Va., and was the son of the late John Eugene and Virginia Edenton Voorhees.
Mr. Voorhees graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1954, where he played football and served as Senior Class President. Daniel retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 31 years in 1992. Following his retirement, he worked in the sporting goods department at Valley Heritage. He was also a member of the Harrisonburg Jaycees and the B.P.O.E No. 450. Daniel served in the Virginia National Guard for a number of years before his retirement in 1962.
On Jan. 31, 1960, he married
Nancy Carol Hopkins of Louisa County, who survives.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, John H. Voorhees and wife, Elizabeth, of Durham, N.C.; one brother, John Addison Voorhees of Wilmington, N.C.; and two granddaughters, Hannah Caroline and Emma Kathryn Voorhees, also of Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Harrisonburg with the Revs. Philip Wiehe and Laura Lockey officiating. Burial will follow at the Eastlawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no formal visitation. However, the family will receive friends at anytime at their residence in Harrisonburg.

Sara Marion Graybill Herr
Sara Marion Graybill Herr, 100, a resident at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, died Friday, July 18, 2008.
Mrs. Herr was born April 13, 1908, in Scottdale, Pa., and was a daughter of the late Rev. Clayton A. and Bertha Shelley Graybill.
She attended Martinsburg, Pa. High School and graduated from Eastern Mennonite School in Harrisonburg in 1926. She was a homemaker and was a lifelong member of the Mennonite Church, where she was active in women's organizations. From 1950-1963, Mrs. Herr was active in the Business and Professional Women's Club of Spring Grove, Pa. and the Christian Women's Organization of York, Pa. She was a member of the Gideons International where she held state office.
In 1927, she married
E. Grant Herr, a marriage that would last 77 years. He preceded her in death in 2004.
She is survived by two sons, Kenneth D. Herr of Westlake Village, Calif. and Lowell G. Herr of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Miriam Shaffer and Dorothy Gwin of Martinsburg, Pa.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Park View Mennonite Church with the Revs. Phil Kniss and Barbara Moyer-Lehmen officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fairview cemetery in Martinsburg, Pa.

Thomas V. "Bob" Whitfield
Thomas V. 'Bob' Whitfield, 80, of Elkton, died peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at Evergreene Meadows Nursing Care Center in Stanardsville, Va., of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Born July 26, 1928, in Elkton, Va., he was the son of the late Karl R. and Pauline Smith Whitfield.
He graduated in 1945 from Elkton High School. Bob was a master electrician and retired from Broadway Electric as marketing manager.
Bob was a past member of the Rockingham Male Chorus, chair of the Elkton cemetery Commission, The Elkton Historical Society, a longtime Cub Scout leader, and a faithful blood donor. Bob was proud of Elkton and was a member of Elkton Area United Services.
Bob attended The Church of The Valley and was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church. He was a past chair of the Board of Trustees and past Chairman of the Administrative Board.
He is survived by his wife, Katie Lou Comer; sons, Ed Whitfield and wife, Sharon, and Tom Whitfield; daughter, Lou Ellen Kirkendall and husband, Mel; three granddaughters, Melody Morton and husband, Dave, Adair Terry and husband, Nick, Marie Whitfield and fiance', John O'Connor; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Katie Rose Morton; and a brother, Avery Whitfield and wife, Barbara.
Bob lived a very happy, full life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We appreciate all of your kind deeds, thoughts, and prayers during this sad, but blessed time.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 3 p.m, at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton, with the Rev. Alfred Comer and the Rev. James B. Martin officiating. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Jesse Lee Wilburn
Jesse Lee Wilburn, 48, of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
Mr. Wilburn was born Nov. 15, 1959, in Prince Georges County, Md., and was a son of Lucille Mae Ellison Wilburn and the late Leroy Wilburn.
He lived in the area most of his life and was a roofing contractor with Garland Roofing.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, Larry Wilburn of Dayton and Charles Bailey of Seabrook, Md.; four sisters, Carolyn Thompson and Linda Mowbray of Penn Laird, Brenda Seifried of Singers Glen, and Vicki Hornbuckle of Nacogdoches, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews.
There will be a public viewing from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. According to Mr. Wilburn's wishes, his body will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marian Pence Hensley
Marian Pence Hensley, 79, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at her home.
Marian was born July 24, 1929, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Bernard W. and Grace Mowbray Pence. She was also preceded in death by her older brother, B. Arnold Pence.
Her working career consisted of operating Hensley's Service Center with her husband. She also worked for Haden's Furniture Store and Dean Lumber Company, and for 18 years was secretary for her son Wayne at Hensley's Insurance Agency, all in Elkton. She was a long time member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton. For the past two years she volunteered at E.A.U.S.
On July 3, 1947, she married
Lucius G. Hensley, her husband of 59 years, who preceded her in death July 18, 2006. She is survived by one son, L. Wayne Hensley and wife, Teresa of Elkton; one daughter, Ellen Hensley Martin and husband, P. Douglas of Luray; two brothers, James Pence of Bridgewater, Gary W. Pence of Manassas; seven grandchildren, L.W. Hensley II and wife, Karen, Jennifer Martin Puffinburger and husband, Brian, Martha Hensley, Jeremy Martin, Jonathan Martin, Kory Hensley and Nikki Hensley; three great-grandchildren, Melia Beam, Tristan Smith and Devon L. Morris; two step-great-grandchildren, David Cline and Pamela Cline.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Aug. 24, 2008, at the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Elkton with the Rev. Alda Gunn, Rev. Patricia Riggs and Rev. Rob Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in the Elk Run cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

Sherman Fields
Sherman Lewis Fields, 88, of Elkton, died Aug. 24, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Fields was born Oct. 15, 1919, in the Newtown area of Elkton, and was the son of the late Nathan and Maude Nizer Fields.
He was a devoted member of the Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Elkton, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board, assistant superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Deacon Stewards Layman Union and the Gooden Brothers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9292. He served in the United States Army during World War II and retired as a Staff Sgt. after 20 years of service. Following his military career, he worked at Metro Pants Factory in Harrisonburg and the Farmers & Merchants Bank in Elkton.
His wife, Ethel Mae Franklin Fields, preceded him in death. Mr. Fields is survived by a son, Rudy Fields and wife, Donna, of Elkton; two sisters, Evelyn Rankin of New Market and Imogene Holmes of Harrisburg, Pa.; former wife, Margaret Nizer of Elkton; sister-in-law, Allene Fields of Elkton; three granddaughters, Charity, Kristin and Lauren Fields; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at the Mt. Paran Baptist Church in the Newtown area of Elkton with the Rev. Michael Turner, Elder Benjamin Cubbage, Rev. Thomas Harrison, Rev. A.T. Crawley, Rev. William Grant and Rev. Linda Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Paran Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors.

Roy Dale "Paley" Clem
Roy Dale "Paley" Clem, 67, of 804 Edgewood St., Grottoes, died Friday, Aug. 29, 2008, at his home. Roy was born March 1, 1941, in Shenandoah, and was the son of the late Alma "Boots" Beaghan and stepson of the late W.J. "Billy" Beaghan.
He retired as a salesman from Nolan Company after 42 years of service. He was a long-standing member of the Verona Moose Lodge and was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Raynes Clem of Grottoes; three sons, Dwayne Clem of Grottoes, Jarrett Clem and wife, Tammy, of Harrisonburg, Shannon Clem and wife, Denell, of Grottoes; four grandchildren, Brooke A. Clem, Bryson D. Clem, Autumn M. Clem, Kyla L. Clem; two special aunts, Mary Kathryn Baugher of Elkton, Eva Dean and husband, Aubrey, of Shenandoah; one uncle, Noah Lee Clem Jr. and wife, Phyllis, of Shenandoah.
He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Noah Lee and Flossie Virginia Clem.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Pastor John Neff will conduct the service.

Jean Catherine Snow
Jean Catherine Snow, 89, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Snow was born July 26, 1919, in Page County, and was a daughter of the late Alfred and Crimora Meadows.
She was a homemaker and was a member of St. Peter's United Methodist Church near Elkton.
On Dec. 27, 1939, she married
Carl Lynwood Snow, who preceded her in death Aug. 10, 2004.
Survivors include three sons, Randell Snow, Carl Lee Snow and Eddie Snow, all of Elkton; two daughters, Charlotte Davis of Elkton and Louise Williams of Stanardsville; a brother, Franklin Meadows of Elkton; two sisters, Iva Shifflett and Velva Hughes, both of Shenandoah; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Bob Buchanan will conduct the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.

Isabella M. Castro
Isabella M. Castro, infant daughter of Mynor Corado and Nancy Castro of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandparents, Abel and Benita Castro and Isabel Corado, and a brother, David Corado, all of Harrisonburg.

Florence W. Spitzer
Florence Whitmer Spitzer, 86, of Harrisonburg, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at The Loyalton of Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Spitzer was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Rockingham County, and was the daughter of the late Herman L. and Beulah H. Whitmer.
Florence was a member of the First Church of the Brethren. She retired from Brockway Manufacturing of Harrisonburg and was a greeter at Wal-Mart for 10 years. She also served on the Ladies Auxiliary for the VFW Post 632 on Waterman Drive.
On Jan. 4, 1945, she married
Roy Lee Spitzer, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by five brothers.
Florence is survived by a son, Lee Roy Spitzer and wife, Wanda, of Port Republic; one daughter, Detra Shell Smith of Harrisonburg; one brother, Bill Whitmer of Florida; four sisters, Ann Garber of North Carolina, Leona Layman of Mayland, Ruth Seitler of Pennsylvania, and Phoebe Knight of Waynesboro; three granddaughters, Annette S. Pangle, Kimberley D. Hottinger and Kristine L. Wheeler; five great-grandchildren, Josey Z. Pangle, Zane V. Hottinger, Clay V. Hottinger, W. Bryar Wheeler and Wren R. Wheeler.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Rest Haven cemetery.
