Betty Jane Lantz

Betty Jane Lantz, 85, of Fort Defiance, VA, passed away Monday, June 10, 2013 at her home.
Betty was born in Van Voorhis, PA, on November 26, 1927, and was a daughter of the late Audra Ford and Margaret Beryl (Chandler) Long.
She was a member of Heaston United Methodist Church in Hodgesville, WV.
On June 5, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harold "Hank" Milton Lantz, who preceded her in death.
Betty is survived by two sons, Larry Lantz (Diana) of Grottoes, and Sam Lantz (Brenda) of Grottoes; a brother, R. Max Long (Joyce) of Buckhannon, WV; four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a sister, Dixie Brumfield, and two brothers, Hunter, and Robert Long.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Oak Lawn cemetery in New Hope, VA, with Pastor Michael Hevener officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes.
Raymond Neff Beverage
(May 16, 1921 - June 9, 2013)
Raymond Neff Beverage, 92, of Mount Sidney, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Raymond was born in Monterey, VA, on May 16, 1921, and was a son of the late Morgan and Virgie (Beverage) Beverage.
He retired June 1, 1982 from Westinghouse in Verona, and was a member of the Mount Sidney United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II in the South Pacific. He was loved by family and friends. He was an avid hunter and member of the Augusta Sportsman Club, and enjoyed raising his garden. He had also worked with the Boy Scouts for a number of years.
He was united in marriage on October 12, 1947, to Virginia Arlene Hess Beverage, who preceded him in death on September 23, 2001.
Raymond is survived by a daughter, Linda B. Puffenbarger of Weyers Cave; a son, David L. Beverage of Mt. Sidney; a sister, Anna Grace Harold of Staunton; six grandchildren, Michael, Patrick, Chris, and Ryan Puffenbarger, Brooke Craig, and Brian Beverage; and five great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Cyril and Lawrence Beverage.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Mount Sidney United Methodist Church, with Rev. Russell Heinrich officiating. Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

William "Champ" Moses Stickley
(February 13, 1949 - June 11, 2013)
William Moses "Champ" Stickley, 64, of Weyers Cave, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at his home.
William was born in Harrisonburg on February 13, 1949, and was a son of Edith (Sweet) Stickley of Weyers Cave, and the late James H. Stickley.
He was the co-owner, with his brother Bobby Stickley, of Victory Garage in Weyers Cave, and had served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a one-of-a-kind person who enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren.
William is also survived by two daughters, Alisha Herman of Verona, and Brandi Stickley of Harrisonburg; two sisters and four brothers; four grandchildren, Carey Bryant, Jack Herman, Jaselen Mozae Davis-Stickley, and MaJur Moses Stickley; his nephew, who was like a son to him, Israel Stickley, and several other nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Grottoes. His wishes were to be cremated.

Durwood Conrad Rankin
(April 14, 1942 - June 8, 2013)
Durwood Conrad Rankin, 71, of Bridgewater, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, at his home.
Durwood was born in Mt. Crawford, VA, on April 14, 1942, and was a son of the late Holly and Mattie (Webster) Lewis.
He worked a number of years for Ethan Allen, and Com Sonic.
Durwood is survived by a daughter, Amy Jones; five sisters, Virginia Stevens of Bridgewater, Anna Rankin of Bridgewater, Shirley Phillips of Columbus, OH, Mary Frances Woods of Warren, OH, Sarah Ann Strother and husband Griffin of Warren, OH; a step-brother, Lawrence Lewis; and two grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a daughter, Samantha Carter; a sister, Dorothy Graves; two brothers, Nelson Lee and James Davis Rankin.
A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, with Jim Rankin officiating. The family will receive friends one-hour prior to the service. It was Durwoods wish to be cremated.

Thelma A. Michael
(November 22, 1937 - June 11, 2013)
Thelma A. Michael, 75, of Bridgewater, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at her home, following a lingering illness.
Thelma was born in Weyers Cave, on November 22, 1937, and was a daughter of the late Garnett and Pearl Marie (Rowe) Stroop.
She provided private child care for 33 years in her home and after retirement she worked in the cafeteria at John Wayland Elementary School.
She was a member of Bridgewater United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Adult Sunday school class, and other church activities.
She was united in marriage on April 2, 1963 to A. Ray Michael, who survives.
In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Barbara Michael Williams of Bridgewater, a special grandson Matthew Williams and a brother Kenneth Stroop and his wife Jennifer of Stuarts Draft. She was preceded in death by a son Scott and a brother, Donald Richard Stroop.
A memorial service will be held at Bridgewater United Methodist Church, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 15th, with Rev. James M. Tongue, and Rev. Jim Harris officiating.

Ronald Fred Hohenstein
(April 23, 1950 - June 9, 2013)
Ronald F. Hohenstein, 63, of Bridgewater, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Bridgewater Home.
Ronald was born in Cleveland, OH, on April 23, 1950, and was a son of Marie J. Hohenstein of Bridgewater, and the late William F. Hohenstein.
He worked at Marshalls Distribution Center in Bridgewater, and had also worked for Perdue.
Ronald is survived by a daughter, Dawn Hohenstein and fiancé Jason Lawrence of Weyers Cave; a son, Rudy Hohenstein of Mitchels, VA; a sister, Nancy Davis and husband Roger of Staunton; three brothers, Dennis Hohenstein and wife Shirley of Bridgewater, Brian Hohenstein of Harrisonburg, and David Hohenstein of Bridgewater. He is also survived by grandson, Logan Lawrence, a great friend, Ernest "Moose" Smith, and a number of nieces and nephews.

George ‘Vic’ Maus Jr.
George Victor “Vic” Maus Jr., 85, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Bridgewater Nursing Home.
Mr. Maus was born March 18, 1926, in Union Hills, Md., and was the son of the late George Victor and Helen Boose Maus Sr.
He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1944 and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II 267 Signal Corps. He owned and operated Gildner’s Mattress and Upholstery Shop in Harrisonburg until 1988 and then drove a school bus for Rockingham County Schools, from which he retired in 2000. He was a lifetime member of Carl D. Lee VFW Post 9872 and a member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren.
On Aug. 30, 1951, he married
Delores Bolton, who preceded him in death on April 12, 2011.
Surviving are two daughters, Vicky Maus Rittenhouse and husband, Jon, of Broadway, and Linda Pollan of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Margaret Irvin of Edinburg and Louise Townsend of Harrisonburg; and two grandchildren, Daniel Rittenhouse and Matthew Rittenhouse.
Pastor Jim Hall will conduct a graveside service Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Greenmount cemetery.

Frances Layman Garber
Frances Layman Garber, 96, of the Greenmount community near Harrisonburg, Va., died Oct. 18, 2011, at her home. She was born Jan. 25, 1915, in Rocky Mount, Va., and was the oldest of 10 children born to the Rev. Frank and Sadie Bowman Layman.
Her education started in a one-room school in Franklin County, Va. Frances graduated from Callaway High School in 1930 and received a B.S. degree and a collegiate professional certificate from Radford State Teachers College (now Radford University) in 1933. While in college, she was a member of the debate team, the student council, Pocahontas Literary Society, president of the Athletic Association and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Sorority.
Prior to her marriage, she taught elementary school in Franklin County, Va., for seven years and was an active member of Antioch Church of the Brethren. During her young adult years, she served as president of the Southern District of Virginia youth and vice president of the Southeastern Region for the Church of the Brethren. She was a delegate to the annual conference of the Church of the Brethren several times. As an advocate of the church camping program, she served as a camp director and counselor at several camps, including Camp Bethel near Roanoke, Camp Galilee in West Virginia and Camp Mack in Indiana. She was instrumental in starting Camp lthiel in Florida.
On Aug. 28, 1940, Frances married
Carl Levi Garber and moved to his home near Greenmount Church. In addition to teaching school, Frances worked with Carl on their dairy farm. While teaching school, Frances was always a member of local, state and national teachers’ organizations. Her teaching career in Rockingham County included positions at Timberville and Linville-Edom Elementary Schools. After retirement, she became a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
As a member of Greenmount Church of the Brethren, Frances taught Sunday school, directed children’s programs, was youth adviser, served on the church board and taught Bible School. She was deaconess in the church and served as project coordinator for the Women’s Fellowship, constructing many comforters for the Church of the Brethren relief effort. Other interests included serving on the chaplain committee and the Auxiliary for Bridgewater Retirement Community. She supported Weekday Religious Education in Rockingham County and served on the Education Committee. In 1980, she was nominated and chosen as Mother of the Year for Rockingham County.
Frances loved to travel and visited all of the United States except Alaska. She traveled to every continent except Antarctica. She and Carl extended hospitality in their home to numerous foreign exchange students from several countries during the Christmas season.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Carl; two sisters, Annis Rebecca Layman and Nancy Jane Layman; a brother, John Isaac Layman; her son, Benjamin Garber; and two grandsons, Baby Boy Gowl and Todd Bailey.
She is survived by five daughters and their husbands, Sara Alyce and Kenneth Dean, Carlene and Kenneth Knupp, Theresa and Carlton Bailey, Doris and Leon Gowl, Valda and Rich Weider; and one foster son, Charles Moubray.
Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; three sisters (Drusilla Pasley, Ardine Akers, and Lois Willis); and three brothers (Frank Layman Jr., Daniel Layman and wife, Mary, and David Layman and wife, Anne).

Edward W. Wilson
Edward Wayne Wilson, 63, of Luray, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at Hawksbill Primitive Baptist Church.

Brommie W. Warner Sr.
MOUNT SOLON, Va. — Brommie William Warner Sr., 81, of 26 Todd Hill Lane, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011. He was born July 10, 1930, in Riverton, W.Va., a son of the late Jesse Howard and Etta Jane (Bland) Warner.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth “Kitty” (McManaway) Warner; their two sons, Brommie “Bink” Warner Jr. and wife, Amy, and Jeffery Warner and wife, Tracey, all of Mount Solon; four grandchildren, Mike Warner and wife, Miriam, of Wickford, R.I., and Brian, Ashley and Kimberly Warner, all of Mount Solon; and a sister, Monna Redifer and husband, Leon, of Mount Solon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Warner, and three sisters, Via Kidwell, Freida Warner and Cleda Vandevander.
Prior to retirement, Brommie was employed as a truck driver for Smith’s Transfer for 25 years. In the early ’50s, he drove a milk truck for Shenandoah’s Pride. He loved riding horses and taking care of his animals, and he spent many years attending horse shows. Brommie attended the Mount Solon Pentecostal Church.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in Moscow Church of the Brethren cemetery conducted by the Revs. Charles Clinedinst and Jeffery Warner. Friends may call at the residence at any time.
