Edward Newhamn Miller

Edward Newhamn Miller, 63, of LaCrosse, Wis., formerly of Mount Jackson, died March 5, 2007, at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse.

Mr. Miller was born Dec. 25, 1943, in Mount Jackson, son of the late Paul Eugene and Mildred Virginia Bowman Miller. He was a Navy veteran, retiring after 11 years. He was a member of Walkers Chapel Church of the Brethren.

Surviving are his companion, Cynthia Ancil; daughter, Shana Miller of Ocala, Fla.; two brothers, Frank E. Miller of Mount Jackson and John B. Miller of Frankfort, Germany; three sisters, Mildred Miller of Edinburg, Vera Woodzell and Nanette Miller, both of Mount Jackson; and a grandson.

The funeral was conducted Saturday, March 10, at Walkers Chapel Church of the Brethren. Burial was in Pleasant View Memorial Gardens, Mount Jackson.

Arrangements handled by Dellinger Funeral Home, Mount Jackson.

Bethel Cornelia Spiker Putnam

Bethel Cornelia Spiker Putnam, 96, formerly of Strasburg, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Skyline Terrace Nursing Home, Woodstock.

Mrs. Putnam was born Aug. 29, 1910, in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Elizabeth Neff Spiker. She was a homemaker and life member of Walnut Springs Christian Church. She was the wife of the late Lovell Franklin Putnam.

Surviving are two sons, Harold F. Putnam and Earl C. Putman, both of Strasburg; two brothers, Roy Spiker of Woodstock and Boyd Spiker of Tooele, Utah; two sisters, Mary Irene Orndorff and Phenie Russell, both of Strasburg; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, March 13, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, by the Rev. Wendell M. Schurtz Jr. Burial was in Walnut Springs cemetery, Oranda.

Memorials may be made to Walnut Springs Christian Church, 1905 Oranda Road, Strasburg, VA 22657.

Richard Franklin Trobaugh
(August 29, 1933 - September 16, 2012)

Richard Franklin Trobaugh, 81, of Harrisonburg, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 16, 2012 at oak Lea, VMRC surrounded by his family and friends.

Richard was born in Rockingham County, VA., on August 29, 1933, the son of the late Luella Trobaugh Carver.

He owned and operated Burgess' Store for over 20 years, and retied from the Postal Service after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Mount Crawford United Methodist Church, and the Mt. Crawford Ruritan Club, and had served as President of the Mount Crawford Community cemetery for 40+ years.

On May 19, 1950, he married Frances Virginia (Armentrout) Trobaugh, who survives.

Richard is also survived by a daughter, Linda F. Rhodes and husband Ralph "Joe" Rhodes of Mt. Crawford; two sons, Ronald W. Trobaugh and wife Donna of Mt. Crawford, and Richard T. "Tom" Trobaugh and wife Juin of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Wendy Rhodes Showalter and husband Brian, and Kevin Wayne Trobaugh and wife Carolyn; and two great grandchildren Jordan Showalter and Jesse Showalter and a special friend, Owen Pence.

A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012, with Pastor Russell Heinrich and Rev. Ben Burks officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Crawford Community cemetery.

Family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, September, 19, 2012, at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

A memorial service will be conducted 3 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 at Strite Auditorium at VMRC, with Rev. Ben Burks officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community Compassion Fund, and/or the Good Samaritan Fund, 1491 Virginia Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22802.

Earl Preston “Sam” Spiker

STEPHENS CITY- Earl Preston “Sam” Spiker, 71, died Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Spiker was born April 17, 1935, in Shenandoah County, son of Preston I. and Anna V. Wymer Spiker. He retired Jan. 2 from O-N Mineral Chemstone after 48 years of service. He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He was a member of Meadow Mills Church of the Brethren in Middletown and Strasburg Moose Lodge 403.

Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Ann Putman Spiker; son, Jeffrey Allen Spiker of Florida; daughter, Debra Ann Anderson of Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Mary E. Rudloph and Gladys M. Ritenour, both of Strasburg, Mae V. Miller and Juanita K. Watts, both of Middletown, Rebecca A. Hoover and Esther S. Cooper, both of Woodstock; brother, Roland W. Spiker of Middletown; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday, March 10, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, by Pastor Fred Mauck. Burial, with military honors accorded by Shenandoah American Legion Post 77 of Strasburg, was in Riverview cemetery, Strasburg.

Edna May Calhoun

Edna May Calhoun, 76, of Front Royal, died on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Tandem Nursing Home in Woodstock.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1930, in Washington, D.C., and was a daughter of the late Allen Lewis Sr. and Mayblossom Jennings Lewis.

Mrs. Calhoun was a homemaker and a member of the Rileyville Baptist Church.

On Feb. 1, 1950, she married Aubrey Simpson Calhoun, who died on Dec. 30, 2005.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Marie Wright of Mount Jackson, and Brenda May Burdick of Wexford, Pa.; a son, Allen Dennis Calhoun of Clayton, N.C.; a brother, Allen Lewis of Hudson, Fla.; a sister, Mary Ellen Polen of Potomac, Md.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Rileyville Baptist Church by the Rev. Alan McCullough and the Rev. David Johnson.

Burial will held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, at Arlington National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rileyville Baptist Church Building Fund.

Brian Wade Arbogast

Brian Wade Arbogast, 23, of Slanesville, W.Va., died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, in Winchester Medical Center as the result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Arbogast was born Feb. 15, 1983, in Winchester, son of Donald A. Arbogast of Slanesville and Brenda D. Murrell of Aiken, S.C. He was a mechanic.

Surviving along with his parents are a brother, Donnie A. Arbogast of Augusta, W.Va.; half brother, Wyatt Murrell of Aiken; his maternal grandfather, Franklin Smith of Raleigh, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Barbara Donohue of Romney, W.Va.; and paternal grandmother, Betty Ellis of Toms Brook.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, W.Va., with Pastor Robert Jeffreys officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery, Romney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at the funeral home.

Gordon Lee Huffer
(July 21, 1927 - September 20, 2012)

Gordon Lee Huffer, 85, of Mount Solon passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Mt. Solon on July 21, 1927, and was a son of the late James Clark and Willie Viola (Cassiday) Huffer.

Gordon was retired from Forrester with the US Department of Forestry and had worked for Sierra Stove. He was a member of Emmanuel Church of the Brethren and served in the U.S. Army in World War II while stationed in Germany.

On August 16, 1949 he was united in marriage to Peggy Ann (Harlow) Huffer who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons Charles Lee "Pete" Huffer and Bruce Elwood "Shorty" Huffer, both of Mt. Solon, and Dennis Eugene Huffer and fiance' Sue Fox of Shenandoah; two favorite nieces, Judy Shull and Theresa Broc.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ivy Lough and a brother, Earl D. Huffer.

A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel, Bridgewater, VA, at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 22, 2012, with Rev. B. Eugene Shaver officiating. Burial will follow at Emmanuel Church cemetery with military grave rites conducted the American Legion Post #27 of Dayton, Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 21, 2012 from 6:30 until 8:00 PM. at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Bonnie Lilly Propst
(February 7, 1926 - October 6, 2012)

Bonnie Kathleen Lilly Propst, 86, of Dayton, passed away on October 6, 2012 at the Mountain View Elder Care Facility in Penn Laird.

She was born in Clover Hill on February 7, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Samuel Moffet and Edna Florence (Eye) Lilly.

Bonnie worked as an executive housekeeper at Sheraton Inn. She was a member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church.

She was united in marriage on December 2, 1944 to Otho Wilson Propst, who preceded her in death on December 25, 2003.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Depoy and husband Jerry of Dayton; a son, Gary Propst of Dayton; a sister, Charlotte Lucille Van Pelt of Dayton; a brother, Harry Lee Lilly and wife Nora of Bridgewater; two grandchildren, Krista Rogers and Scott Depoy; and two great grandchildren, Blake Rogers and Courtney Rogers.

She was preceded in death by a sister Vernie Lee, and two brothers Raymond Lilly, and Leroy Lilly.

A graveside service will be held at Clover Hill cemetery at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 with Rev. Lewis C. Armentrout, Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater.

Memorial contributions may be made to Clover Hill Fire & Rescue, 2100 Clover Hill Rd., Dayton, VA 22821.

Edna May Calhoun

FRONT ROYAL- Edna May Calhoun, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2007, at Tandem Nursing Home in Woodstock.

Mrs. Calhoun was born Oct. 2, 1930, in Washington, D.C., daughter of the late Allen Lewis Sr. and Mayblossom Jennings Lewis. She was a homemaker and a member of Rileyville Baptist Church.

On Feb. 1, 1950, she married Aubrey Simpson Calhoun who preceded her in death Dec. 30, 2005.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda Marie Wright of Mount Jackson and Brenda May Burdick of Wexford, Pa.; son, Allen Dennis Calhoun of Clayton, N.C.; brother, Allen Lewis of Hudson, Fla.; sister, Mary Ellen Polen of Potomac, Md.; nine grandchildren, Joseph Lewis, Patrick and Travis Burdick, Matthew, Daniel, Rebecca, Amanda, Abigail and Katherine Calhoun; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday, Feb. 3, at Rileyville Baptist Church by the Revs. Alan McCullough and David Johnson. Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in Arlington National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rileyville Baptist Church Building Fund.

Grace Heishman Burner Copp

Grace Heishman Burner Copp, 88, of Woodstock, passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Copp was born March 7, 1918, in Woodstock, daughter of the late Harry Cameron Burner and Annie Elizabeth Heishman Burner. She was married to the late Glenwood Copp on Jan. 19, 1943.

Mrs. Copp spend her entire life in the Woodstock area. She was a 1937 graduate of Woodstock High School and retired from Blue Bell in Woodstock in 1983. She was a member of Patmos Lutheran Church, west of Woodstock. She attended Saumsville Christian Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher, leader of the Christian Youth Fellowship and member of the Loyal Crusaders class and Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was also a member of the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a hospital volunteer for 22 years after retirement and was a den mother for the Club Scouts in Saumsville.

Surviving are three sons, Cameron and wife Jean Ellis Copp, Jerry and wife Jean Lam Copp, and Steven and wife Cindy Copp, all of Woodstock; three daughters, Linda Wymer and husband Robert Sr. of Toms Brook, Darlene Copp and friend, John W. Pretty of Pinebluff, N.C., and Ann Crisman and husband Robert of Edinburg; 10 grandchildren, Nena Cloer, Melissa Copp Foltz, Stephen Ellis, Robert Wymer Jr., Jeffrey Crisman, Chad Copp, Tina Abbott, Susan Sites, Abbi Copp and Alyson Copp; 14 great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Alexandra and Christian Cloer, Katelyn Foltz, Emily and Robbie Wymer, Kenneth, Amanda and Dillan Polk, Anden Copp, Trey and Krysten Bischoff, Alexus Abbott and Conner Sites; and one sister, Frances Vann of Woodstock.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Marvin (Tony), Linden, and Harry (Jimmy); and four sisters, Lelia Boswell, Mabel Helsley, Edna Sudduth and Margaret Riffey.

A funeral service was conducted Sunday, Feb. 4, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, by Revs. C. Bernard Troutman and Richard Carver. Burial was in Saumsville Christian Church cemetery.

Kenneth “Kenny” Eugene Huffman

NEW MARKET- Kenneth “Kenny” Eugene Huffman, 45, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Life Care Center, New Market, where he had been a resident since 2003.

Mr. Huffman was born on Dec. 19, 1961, in Harrisonburg, son of Virgil Huffman and the late Verna Huffman. He was a member of the Mount Crawford United Methodist Church. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours enjoying the independence of his powered wheelchair in the areas around his home. He also enjoyed watching the Washington Redskins and was a fan most years. He was an inspiration to so many for his upbeat personality, ready smile and for the way he met life’s challenges to include his skills of communicating using an electronic “Pathfinder” which was donated by the community.

In addition to his father, surviving are a daughter, Katie Huffman of Chesterfield; brother, Col. Larry Huffman, USMC (retired) and wife Linda of High Point, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Puffenbarger and husband Arlie and Karen Dillon and husband Bob, all of Mount Crawford; four nephews, Tyson and Eric Huffman of Greensboro, N.C., David Puffenbarger of McGaheysville and Mark Puffenbarger of Stephens City; and a niece, Melissa Kyger of Harrisonburg.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at Mount Crawford United Methodist Church with the Revs. Helen Zotolli and Paul Seland officiating.

At Ken’s request, he will be cremated and interred in the family plot at Mount Crawford cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
