Robert Lee Cook

MOUNT JACKSON - Robert Lee Cook died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at Life Care Center of New Market.

Mr. Cook was born Dec. 2, 1929, in Mount Jackson, son of the late Samuel Edward and Frances Wissler Foltz Cook. He was a graduate of Triplett High School in Mount Jackson and Shenandoah Business College in Woodstock. He was a member of Hawkinstown United Methodist Church, Mount Jackson, and a former employee of Aileen Inc. in Edinburg.

Surviving are his wife, Helen M. Cook; and brother, Edwin M. Cook of Harrisonburg.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Hawkinstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glen Early officiating. The family will received friends prior to the service.

Elaine M. Diehl

WINCHESTER - Elaine M. Diehl, 79, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at her home.

Mrs. Diehl was born April 5, 1928, in Cumberland, Md., daughter of the late John I. and Mary Cook Miller. She was a 1946 graduate of Fort Hill High School and received a BS in 1950 from Frostburg State University, formerly Frostburg State College. After moving to Winchester, she was a teacher at Senseny Road Elementary School for 18 years. She was a longtime member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, served on church council, as well as various other committees, assisted with Vacation Bible School and helped organize an active church women's group. She also was a volunteer with the Winchester Medical Center, the American Cancer Society and Meals on Wheels. She was the wife for 42 years to the late James H. Diehl, whom she married on April 15, 1951, in Cumberland. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1993.

Surviving are two sons, Stephen J. Diehl and wife April of Strasburg, Jeffrey A. Diehl and wife Bridget of Winchester; one daughter, Denise D. Corbin and husband Joe of Panama City Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Todd, Sean, and Alex Diehl, Hilary Greene, and Justin and Mary Beth Corbin; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Cameron Diehl, Brooke and Grace Greene.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. James H. Utt officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home.

Mary Sue Fahrney

BROADWAY - Mary Sue Fahrney, 68, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg.

Mrs. Fahrney was born July 18, 1939, in Shenandoah County, daughter of the late Clarence "Jack" Raymond and Alda Bowers Will. She retired as an assistant vice president with Farmers and Merchants Bank after 35 years of employment. She was a banker in Arlington and also taught school in Shenandoah County. She graduated from Madison College, now James Madison University. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ near Timberville and attended Sunset Drive United Methodist Church, Broadway.

On Aug. 28, 1982, she married Merlin Fahrney, who survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Jack Will of New Market and Donald Will of Timberville; and two nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Sunset Drive United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Throckmorten Jr. and Pastor Anil D. Solanki. Burial followed in St. Luke's UCC cemetery.

Hazel Moyers Gambill

STRASBURG - Hazel Moyers Gambill, 78, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 1, 2007, at the Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center in Winchester. She had been a cancer survivor for 27 years. Over the past five years she suffered two more battles with cancer, the last cancer being inoperable. She will be missed by many.

Mrs. Gambill was born March 24, 1929, near Singers Glen, daughter of Fred P. and Tessie W. Moyers. She was a 1946 graduate of Linville-Edom High School. A few days before graduation her beloved older sister, Mabel M. Moyers, 19, was killed as a passenger in a car crash in Washington, D.C. Hazel and Mabel were known as the Moyers Sisters and had sung hymns on WSVA Radio in Harrisonburg in the early 1940s. Hazel deeply felt the loss of her dear talented sister.

Mrs. Gambill worked six years as a typist for the Rockingham County Welfare Department. On April 26, 1952, she married Kenton F. Gambill of Harrisonburg. They had met on a blind date and ten months after their marriage, became the proud parents of their one and only child. In 1954 they moved to Strasburg, where her husband was a teacher at Strasburg High School. She was a stay-at-home mom for nearly 10 years. During her marriage she worked the longest as a sales clerk at the Woodstock Leggett Department Store from 1964 to 1977. She easily made friends and had an inner and outer beauty.

She had been an active member of Strasburg Presbyterian Church, had previously been a member of United Church of the Brethren in Singers Glen and Harrisonburg Baptist Church. She rededicated her life to Jesus Christ after her daughter became involved with Campus Crusade for Christ at Virginia Tech. Later she was baptized in the New River in Blacksburg. She participated in Women's Aglow and many other Bible studies. She enjoyed sharing her personal faith in Christ with others.

In addition to her sister, she was preceded in death by her father and her mother, who lived to be two days short of 101 years old.
In addition to her husband of 55 years, surviving are her loving daughter, Diane K. Gambill of Winchester; and her brother, Harmon D. Moyers of Singers Glen, who now resides at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation in Winchester.

A gathering to celebrate her homecoming into heaven will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Stover Funeral Home, Strasburg, then following at 2 p.m. at the Singers Glen cemetery.

David L. Good

FAIRFAX - David L. Good went to be with the Lord peacefully after a long courageous fight with cancer on Nov. 25, 2007.

Mr. Good was born June 13, 1941, son of the late Wilbert and Irene Good of New Market, where he grew up enjoying horses, playing baseball and fishing along the Shenandoah River. He was married on Nov. 26, 1960, to Geneva Elizabeth Phillips of Lacey Spring. They moved to Northern Virginia where they founded Good Concrete Construction Co. Inc. His company aided in building what was then a rural community into the sprawling metropolis that is now Fairfax County, and where many landmarks represent his life's work. His wife passed away on July 20, 2006.

He is remembered with great love by his four daughters, Susan Black, Becky Earhart, Leigh Ann Earhart and Kristi Valone. He is the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, Chad, Matthew and Sarah Elizabeth Black, David, Rebecca, Jenna, Patrick, Ashleigh and Mary Katherine Earhart; and one great-granddaughter, Katelin Black.

He is also survived by his brothers, John M. Good of Timberville, George S. Good of New Market and sister, Mary C. Conley of Timberville.

David is fondly remembered for his warm smile, honesty, integrity, strong work ethic, and compassion for others, especially those in need.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 1, at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home. Interment followed in Stonewall Memorial Gardens, Manassas.

Blake Emory Ingles

TEXAS CITY, TEXAS - Blake Emory Ingles, 16, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, in Texas City, Texas. He was born Dec. 27, 1990, in Galveston, Texas. Blake had been an outstanding honor roll student at Westlawn Elementary, La Marque Middle School, La Marque High School and most recently enrolled in College of the Mainland's collegiate high school program.

Blake was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Donald and Hilda Ingles.

He is survived by his parents, Don and Rachel Ingles; younger sister, Elaina Ingles; maternal grandparents, John and Patsy Simmons; great-grandmother, Olga Simmons; aunts and uncles, Jose and Beth Corvalan, David and Sandi Simmons, Michael Simmons, C. J. Ingles, Johnny and Lupe Ingles; cousins, Jessica Ingles, Kathy Corvalan, Brandi Simmons and Brian Simmons.

A public visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Carnes Funeral Home, Texas City. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, also at the funeral home with Rev. Carl Strickland officiating. Burial followed in Galveston Memorial Park cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas.

Blake made an impression on all those who knew him. He was a loving, giving and caring person, so loved by everyone. His family, friends and any who ever knew him will greatly miss him.

Florence Leake

ROANOKE - Florence Leake, 86, formerly of Woodstock, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, in Roanoke.

Mrs. Leake was a schoolteacher in Strasburg. She was a member of Woodstock United Methodist, United Methodist Women and taught the young adult Sunday school.

A graveside service was conducted Friday, Nov. 30, at Massanutten cemetery in Woodstock.

Arrangements handled by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

Robert "Rob" Roland Lindhurst

OXNARD, CALIF. - Robert "Rob" Roland Lindhurst, 57, formerly of Woodstock, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at his home.

Mr. Lindhurst was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Glendale, Calif., son of the late Roland William and Helen Hymer Lindhurst. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a builder and developer for Burgess Dellinger Inc.

Surviving are two sons, Roland Burgess Lindhurst of Moneta and Devin Barr Lindhurst of Edinburg; and a sister, Diane Sloat of Loomis, Calif.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, Nov. 30, at Dellinger Funeral Home, Woodstock, by the Rev. John F. Taylor Jr. Burial, with military honors, was held in St. Luke cemetery, west of Woodstock.

Betty James Morlan

MCLEAN - Betty James Morlan, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 surrounded by her loving family at her home in McLean.

Mrs. Morlan was born May 28, 1917, in Terre Haute, Ind., daughter of the late Homer and Mary James. She was a graduate of Indiana State University with a bachelors degree in childhood education, and as a kindergarten teacher she founded early childhood education programs in her home in Woodstock, at Trinity United Methodist Church in McLean, and at Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean. A former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Woodstock and Redeemer Lutheran Church in McLean, she was most recently a member of the McLean 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in McLean. She taught Sunday school, directed children's choirs, and was a member of the Mormon Choir of Washington, D.C. for over 20 years. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Surviving are her husband, Gene Morlan; her children, Ann Bayba of McLean, Steven Morlan of Woodstock, Mary Howell of Union Grove, N.C., John Morlan of Birmingham, Ala., Beth Schill of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Michelle St. Clair of Charlotte, N.C.; her sister, Frances Hutchings of Meadowbrook, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by son, Richard Morlan of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The family will receive friends at 9:45 a.m. in the Relief Society Room prior to the service. The service of celebration of her life will be conducted by Bishop Bill Hansen at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the chapel of McLean Stake Center, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2034 Great Falls St., Falls Church, on the corner of Great Falls Street and Idlywood Road. A graveside service will be held at 3:45 p.m. at Massanutten cemetery located behind Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, Scott Bayba, Martin Howell, Chen Bayba, Corey St. Clair, Nicholas St. Clair, and Brandon Schill; her sons-in-law, Mil Bayba, Wayne Howell, Richard Schill and David St. Clair and her grandson-in-law, Kris Pigeon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Capital Hospice, 4401 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20008; or Perpetual Education Fund, c/o Bishop William Hansen, 1537 Longfellow St., McLean, VA 22101.

Harry O. "Nic" Nicodemus III

ARDMORE, OKLA. - Harry O. "Nic" Nicodemus III, 87, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, in Oklahoma.

Mr. Nicodemus was born July 20, 1920, in Woodstock, son of the late Harry O. Nicodemus Jr. and Julia Stickley Nicodemus. He served 44 months in the U.S. Army Airborne Engineers in France, Germany, England, Belgium and Holland. He attended College at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, where he was a member of the Corp. of Cadets and the Hokie baseball team. He retired in July of 1982, as project superintendent for Rust Engineering Co. after 34 years of service. He was superintendent during construction of the Uniroyal Tire Plant in Ardmore, Okla. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Ardmore Masonic Lodge No. 31 AF & AM in which he received his 50 year pin. He was an avid sportsman and a longtime member of Lakeview Golf Club.

He was married on July 12, 1974 to Juanita Yates, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Harry O. Nicodemus IV and wife Diane of Katy, Texas; one daughter, Faith Julia Norton and husband David of Katy; granddaughter, Kristin Nicodemus of Katy; grandson, Harry O. Nicodemus V and wife Christina of Houston, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Carson and Cate Nicodemus of Houston; one brother, B.C. Nicodemus and wife Marguerite, of Salem; and two nephews Nicky and Tom Nicodemus. His extended family includes one stepson, Randy Yates and wife Maureen, and one step-granddaughter, Kelly Yates of Long Beach, Calif.

A service was conducted Monday, Dec. 3, at Griffin-Hillcrest Chapel, by the Revs. John Wackler and Dan Patman. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery.

Roy Repaske

STAR TANNERY - Roy Repaske, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Repaske was born March 17, 1925, in Cleveland. He was an Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Bronze Star. He attended Western Reserve University, received his master's from the University of Michigan and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He taught at Indiana University and was a molecular biologist for 33 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. He was a consultant to NASA and the Navy, program director for biochemistry at the National Science Foundation and instructor of microbiology at the USDA Graduate School. He held an adjunct professorship at George Washington University. After moving to Star Tannery he raised cashmere goats. He had been president of the board of directors of the Eastern Cashmere Association. He was a member of the American Recorder Society and president of the Washington Recorder Society. He and his wife played recorder in the Capriole Recorder Ensemble at Shenandoah University and performed at churches and retirement communities.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Repaske; two sons, David Repaske of Blue Ash, Ohio, and Bill Repaske of New Iberia, La.; daughter, Carol Sandberg of Woolford, Md.; sister, Irene Rhenich of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral service was conducted Friday, Nov. 30, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Woodstock, by the Rev. Walter Clark. Burial followed in Gravel Springs cemetery, Star Tannery.

Memorials may be made to Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy at Shenandoah University, Office of Development, 1460 University Drive, Winchester, VA 22601.

Ann Hundley Riley

WOODSTOCK - Ann Hundley Riley, 98, died on Nov. 27, 2007.

Mrs. Riley was born Nov. 29, 1908, in Norfolk, daughter of the late Rev. John Trible Thomas Hundley and Sue Fleet Walker Hundley. She was the last of her generation. For the past 20 years she was the matriarch of the Hundley clan that lived throughout southeastern Virginia for 350 years.

She graduated from EC Glass High School in Lynchburg at 16 and graduated from Lynchburg College in 1929. Her father was president of Lynchburg College from 1915 to 1936. She loved playing basketball and field hockey at both schools, where she was team captain every year except one.

She taught math, French and English in Stoneville HS, N.C., for five years after college. She called these years very happy ones - teaching and playing semipro basketball. The team would travel in one car, and play in tobacco warehouses, the only building large enough for a game. Her team played 2-court, 3-court, and trans-court basketball, to suit whatever the local teams wanted. She was nearly always the highest scorer.

In 1934 she married W. O. "Web" Riley, whom she met and dated in college. She and Web then settled in Woodstock and began their family with Wilbur Jr. "Punky", George and Susan. During World War II they moved throughout the South as her husband served in the U.S. Air Corps. He had earned his pilot wings in the early 1930s. During World War II he was in charge of flight training for French cadets, and served as basic commander at several airfields in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. Ann thought the war years were high adventures, and she always fondly remembered the many relocations and meeting new people. After retiring as a Major, Web, Ann and family returned in 1946 to Woodstock to settle permanently.

Mrs. Riley was a longtime and active member of Disciples of Christ Christian Church She was also active in the Democratic party, the Shenandoah Garden Club, the auxiliaries of the Shenandoah County Memorial Hospital and American Legion. She was on the 1952 Woodstock Bicentennial planning committee. Her husband was Mayor of Woodstock and served in the Virginia House of Delegates. She immensely enjoyed the many events when she was seated by celebrities and honored guests and could entertain and be entertained.

She was inducted into the inaugural Lynchburg College Sports all of Fame as a founding member in 1978. Web was inducted a year later in 1979. The National Garden Club of America honored her in 2002.

She was a dedicated and dependable member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church. Through her minister father and Lynchburg College, and for her entire lifetime, the church was a fixture and a comfort. She was also a diehard Democrat. Getting her political foundation during the Depression, she was a Roosevelt Democrat to the end.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, her son "Punky" in 2000 and her daughter Susan Lambiotte in 2003.

Surviving are her son, George of Monterey, Calif.; six grandchildren, Kenneth Lambiotte of Richmond, Walker Lambiotte of Dallas, Texas, Ann Lambiotte Foutch of Charlotte, N.C., Clay Lambiotte of Winchester, England, Rachel Riley Cox of Palo Alto, Calif., Jon Riley of Menlo Park, Calif.; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Friday, Nov. 30, at Woodstock Christian Church by the Rev. Paul Pryor. Burial was private. She was loyally and fondly cared for in her very late years by Bonnie Simmons.
