HOLLAND
David Furman Holland, 60, passed away after an extended illness on Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany, Ga. Mr. Holland is survived by his wife of 39 years, Emily Brown Holland; two sons, David Christopher Holland of Richmond, Va. and Paul Wesley Holland and wife, Heidi Ellis Holland of Burlington, Vt.; his mother, Martha Underwood Holland of Magnolia Manor in Americus, Ga.; and one brother, John M. Holland Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Holland was the son of Mrs. Holland and the late John M. Holland of Bronwood, Ga. Mr. Holland was a transportation executive, living in Richmond, Va. until 1999. He was a member of the Western Henrico Rotary club, holding various offices including president. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Holland was a graduate of Wingate University, Wingate, N.C. and Georgia State University, Atlanta, Ga. A memorial service will be held at the Bronwood United Methodist Church, Bronwood, Ga., at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 29. Another memorial service will be held in Richmond, Va at the Westhampton United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 13. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or the David Holland Foundation at 7 Bay Crest Dr., S. Burington, Vt. 05403.

INGE
Ernest Cutler Inge Jr., 85, of Midlothian, died September 27, 2001. Survived by his wife, Judith G. Inge; a son, Ernest Cutler Inge III; a daughter, Betty I. Aust; two sisters, Frances Baker and Lucy Fanshaw; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Inge was a member of Brandermill Church, a member of Brandermill Retired Men's Club, and was retired from Dominion Virginia Power with 44 years of service. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m., and where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with private interment. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Brandermill Church.

JEFFRIES
Georgia Bryan Grinnan Jeffries, formerly of Richmond, died in Falls Church, Va. on August 15, 2001. She was the wife of the late Alexander H. Jeffries; mother of Alexander H. Jeffries Jr. and Louis E. Jeffries; sister of Dr. William C. Grinnan; and grandmother of Alexander, Fleming and Susan Jeffries. Interment services will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 11 a.m. in Hollywood Cemetery. The family requests no flowers or contributions.

JONES
Kenneth Lee Jones, 40, of Chesterfield, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2001. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of nearly 18 years, Terri W. Jones; and beloved children, Kelly and Brent Jones; his loving parents, Bobby and Jackie Jones; brother, Greg and his wife, Stacey; niece, Ashley; grandmothers, Ruby Witt and Mary Jones; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Jeanette Wilkinson. Mr. Jones was blessed to be loved by many aunts, uncles, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Mr. Jones was an electrician with Local Union No. 666 and was a member of Lyndale Baptist Church, where he was to be ordained a deacon. Mr. Jones was very active in youth sports in Chesterfield, coaching boys and girls at Smith and Spring Run Associations. His spirit and kind heart will be missed by all. The family would like to thank their friends, community, coworkers, and the doctors, nurses and staff at the MCV Burn Center for their care and support. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Interment Dale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kenneth L. Jones Memorial Fund to allow less fortunate children to play sports in Chesterfield County. KITCHEN
John Addison Kitchen Sr., 76, of Spring Grove, Va., died Thursday, September 27, 2001. He was the former owner of K&M Plumbing & Heating Co. in Petersburg, Va. He was a member of Claremont United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Brockwell Kitchen; two daughters, Jody K. Ceppi (Norman F. Ceppi) and Peggy K. Seward (Arthur K. Seward Jr.); son, John Addison Kitchen Jr.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Arie Mae Haskins and Leatrice K. Fastabend; daughter-in-law, Deborah G. Kitchen; numerous nieces and nephews and others who loved him dearly. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday in the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. memorial contributions may be made to the Surry Vol. Rescue Squad, Claremont U.M.C., or Blandford U.M.C.

KLAUS
Edward Louis Klaus, Commander (U.S. Navy, retired), age 80, died peacefully September 26, 2001 in his home in Pompano Beach, Fla. Commissioned an ensign in 1944, he was immediately assigned duty in the Pacific with the Occupational Forces in Japan. After several years of destroyer duty, he was engineering instructor at the Midshipman School in Newport, R.I. and an engineering officer aboard the destroyer Henley during the Korean War. During the Cold War he had numerous assignments with SACLANT and NATO and served as the commanding officer of the destroyer, USS Holder, DD-819. Near the end of his naval career he was Secretary and Special Programs Director at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Va. He is survived by five children, Cmdr. Peter Klaus of Virginia Beach, Va., Ann Wynn of Aurora, Colo., Lynn Oliker of Charlton, N.Y., Nancy Hall of Richmond, Va. and David Klaus of Pompano Beach, Fla. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Christine Wynn Manley of Rocklin, Calif., John Wynn of Boulder, Colo., Mack Meadows of Vero Beach, Fla., Demetrius Klaus of Virginia Beach, Va., Katherine Klaus of Atlanta, Ga., Erin Hall of Richmond, Va., Sarah Oliker of Charlton, N.Y., Lorin Oliker of Washington, D.C., Andrew Hall of Richmond, Va. and Joseph Oliker of Charlton, N.Y. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Connor Manley of Rocklin, Cailf. and Taylor Meadows of Vero Beach, Fla. A military burial at sea from Norfolk, Va. is to be held at a later date. MARSHALL
Mrs. Gladys Jackson Marshall of Richmond departed this life Thursday, September 27, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Chester Marshall; one son, Aaron Cornell Maxwell; one stepson, Henry Marshall; five grandchildren; mother, Naomi Jackson; four sisters, three brothers, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts., where viewing will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Sunday, September 30 at which time funeral services will begin. Brother Ed Gilmore officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Mary Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesterfield, South Carolina. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the funeral home Sunday, 11:30 a.m.

Mrs. Mary Rebecca May, age 77, of 6 South Vine St., Richmond, Va., departed this life on Thursday, September 27, 2001 in Richmond. Funeral notice later by Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home of Cumberland.

Flora B. Nellum of 1125 E. 15th St. departed this life September 28, 2001. Remains rest at the Carlton T. Brooks Funeral Home, 2200 Hull St. Funeral notice later.

PAUL
James R. Paul Jr., 38, departed this life September 26, 2001. He was preceded in death by his father, James R. Paul Sr. and is survived by his wife, Pamella; two sons, Phillip and Patrick Paul; his mother, Shirley A. Paul; brother and sister-in-law, Timothy S. and Wanda Paul; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Tammy M. Paul, Amy P. and Dennis M. Duty, Tina P. and David M. Burgess; mother and father-in-law, Ofa M. and Aubrey P. Johnson; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Angie J. and Chris K. Brock, Mindy J. and Tom G. Harbison; two nieces, seven nephews, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Jim was a longtime volunteer in youth baseball, enjoyed woodworking, and was a NASCAR fan. His family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. , where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

SAUNDERS
Charles "Charlie" Mahlon Saunders Jr., 76, died Friday, September 28, 2001. He was born in Carolina Co., June 18, 1925, a son of the late Charles Mahlon Saunders and Annie Landa Saunders. Mr. Saunders graduated from Randolph Macon College in 1950, then moved to Franklin, where he was coach of Franklin High School for eight years. He became principal at Courtland Elementary School and while there, earned his masters degree from William and Mary in 1964. In the fall of 1964, he organized Brunswick Academy in Lawrenceville, where he remained the headmaster until 1969. In 1969, he finished his career in education by serving as headmaster of Nansemond Suffolk Academy. While actively involved in education, he worked as an independent surveyor for the Farm Service Agency (formerly ASCS) for 43 years. He was instrumental in helping farmers in the counties of Southampton, Suffolk, Surry, Dinwiddie, Prince George and Brunswick, to understand all the various programs related to the production of agriculture. Mr. Saunders was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of the Franklin Baptist Church, a member of its Brunner Bible Class, the Hunterdale Ruritan Club, and was a former member of the Franklin Lion's Club. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Baird Saunders; two sons, Charles M. Saunders III and his wife, Nora of Midlothian, Va. and Jeffrey Baird Saunders of Franklin; a daughter, Sherrie Freeman of Crewe, Va.; two brothers, William G. Saunders of Lexington, Va. and Richard L. Saunders of Bowling Green, Va.; three grandchildren, Michael Brandon Saunders, William Mahlon Saunders, and Jacob Samuel Freeman. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Wright Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Sharon E. James and Rev. Ira D. Hudgins officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 204 Southampton Rd., Franklin. Memorials may be made to the Franklin Baptist Church Restoration Fund.

SOUTHERS
Sadie Mae Chittum Southers, 86, of Lexington, died Friday, September 28, 2001, in the Stonewall Jackson Hospital. She was born May 5, 1915 in Rockbridge County and was a daughter of the late Grover Chittum and Mattie Plogger Chittum Hostetter. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. Mrs. Southers was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Love Southers; and a son, James L. Southers. Surviving are eight children, Mattie M. Comstock of Richmond, Marie G. Hostetter of Lexington, Shirley A. Clark of Vesuvius, G. Fonzy Southers Sr., David A. Southers and Paul J. Southers, all of Richmond, Carolyn L. Lawson of Roanoke and John T. Southers of Richmond; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2001 in the Harrison Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Wyatt Mayes officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington, Va.

THOMAS
Margaret Vass Thomas, age 89, of Richmond, died Thursday, September 27, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Thomas; and her daughter, Harriet T. Parsons and is survived by her daughter, Susan T. Jones and her husband, George; grandchildren, Ann, Betsy and Kathy Jones, Glenn and Duane Parsons; son-in-law, Robert W. Parsons; a sister, Nancy Shoemaker. Mrs. Thomas was a lifetime member of Westhampton United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd. Graveside services 2 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

WALKER
Emmett Lee Walker of Aylett died suddenly Thursday, September 27, 2001. He is survived by three sisters, Alice W. Dudley and Elizabeth W. McMullin of Richmond, Patsy W. Martin and her husband, Earl of Aylett; three brothers and their wives, Lewis and Mildred, John and Joyce of Aylett and Charlie and Gerry of Mechanicsville; a sister-in-law, Mary Walker of Aylett; also many beloved nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Horace; and a sister, Estella W. Farmer. Emmett was born July 4, 1941 in King William County, where he lived all his life. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. He will be forever missed. Emmett loved his family and friends. Remains rest at the B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Service 2 p.m. Monday at Beulah Baptist Church with interment in the Walker Family Cemetery.
