Maud Holtslag Ward
WOODSTOCK - Maud Holtslag Ward, 50, died June, 4, 2008, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Ward was born Dec. 9, 1957, in Beverwijk, Holland, daughter of Johan and Caroline Groen Holtslag.
Surviving are four sons, Kyle Ward, Travis Ward, Joseph Shane Ward and Cooper Ward; a daughter, Clair Ward; four sisters and four brothers.
Services will be held at a later date.

William Thomas Wetzel
EDINBURG - William Thomas Wetzel, 76, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Wetzel was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Shenandoah County, son of the late Connie C. and Zula Virginia Polk Wetzel. He was a member of St. Jacob Lutheran Church, Columbia Furnace Community Club and Shenandoah County Senior Center. He attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ.
Surviving are a sister, Martha Jean Gochenour of Woodstock; and brother, Connie C. Wetzel Jr. of Edinburg.
Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Wetzel, Bobby Grubbs, William Andrews, Rick Koontz, Cory Grubbs, Barry Baker and Greg Baker.
A graveside service was conducted Sunday, June 8, at Sunset View Memorial Gardens by the Revs. Timothy E. Teates and John F. Taylor Jr.

Paul Wolk
HUME - Paul Wolk died at his home, The Dell, May 28, 2008.
Mr. Wolk was born in 1914, in Rochester, N.Y., and was a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Following a successful career in Rochester, he moved in the late ’70s to Fauquier County where he enjoyed the country life and fox hunting, having been a long time member of the board of directors of Old Dominion Hunt. He was also an active skier and active in thoroughbred racing and breeding. He served on numerous boards of directors of major corporation and was well known for his extensive philanthropic endeavors. He founded the East House Foundation for the mentally ill in Rochester, served on the Educational Foundation Board of Director at Lord Fairfax Community College, and donated to the college the Paul Wolk Library on the Middletown campus and the Wolk Hall on the Warrenton campus. He also served on the board of directors for the Child Care and Learning Center in Rappahannock County, and participated in the men’s Lunch Club at the Flint Hill Public House.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Ernie, Louis and Ben Wolk.
Surviving are his wife, Sheila O’Brien Wolk; daughters, Judy (Harold) Samloff and Barbara Schwarz of Rochester, N.Y.; stepchildren, Tierney O’Brien (Brad) Dovan of Hume, W. Egan O’Brien II of Flint Hill, and Megan O’Brien (Ron) Tokash of Marshall; two grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life is planned at the Wolk farm at a later date.

Minnie May Bowman
Timberville - Minnie May Bowman, 96, died Friday, June 13 at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Bowman was born on January 31, 1912 in Bergton. She was the daughter of A.B. May and Delia Moyers May. She taught in Rockingham County public schools for 20 years.
Pastor Kathleen Miko conducted the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday, June 16, at the Rader Lutheran Church. Mrs. Bowman was buried at 1 p.m. in Mathias, West Virginia.
Arrangements were by Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
Frances Elizabeth Reedy Broy
Toms Brook - Frances Elizabeth Reedy Broy, 85, died at the Winchester Medical Center on Sunday, June 15.
Mrs. Broy was born on November 6, 1922, in Woodstock, to Kirby and Ada Spence. She was married
to the late Charles Sterling Broy.
She is survived by her son Philip S. Broy of Toms Brook, and a daughter, Donna B. Sweeny, of Winchester. Her sister, Calamese Seal of Maurertown, and her half sister, Avilda Laing of Front Royal, as well as her five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren also survive her.
The family received visitors last evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock. The graveside service is to be held today, Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at the Panorama Memorial Gardens in Strasburg. The service will be conducted by the Rev. John Taylor Jr.
Earl F. D
Woodstock - Earl F. Dyer, 81, of Woodstck died Thursday June 12 at Winchester Medical Center.
Born on May 7, 1927 in Woodstck, he was the son of the late Mary Dyer. He was known by everyone as “the Piano Man.” A man of many talents, Mr. Dyer played the piano for many special occasions, funerals and weddings here in the Valley.
Mr. Dyer worked at the Shenandoah Telephone Company, and was a cook at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, a barber and a music teacher. He served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge. He was a long time member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Woodstock, serving as choir director and pianist. He was an associate member of Stony Creek Church of the Brethern, playing the organ and piano on fourth Sundays.
He is survived by his four cousins: E. Delores Dyer and Sylvia L. Dyer of Woodstock; and Perry E. Dyer and Antony M. Dyer of Maryland.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock. Rev. Clarence E. Acklin and Pastor Louie Shafer will conduct the funeral.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Riverview cemetery in Woodstock.

Geneva Mason Hottinger
Edinburg - Geneva Mason Hottinger, 98, died Saturday June 14, 2008, at Life Care Center in New Market.
Born on December 24, 1909, in Rockingham County, Mrs. Hottinger was the daughter of John C. Mason and Emma Smith Mason. She was a member of the Mount Olivet Church of the Brethren and worked at Vetter’s Orchard. She married
Maynard Franklin Hottinger on January 22, 1931.
Mrs. Hottinger is survived by her daughter, Joan Litten, of Edinburg. Four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild survive her, as well.
The family received friends Monday, June 16, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Pastors Eric Wetzel and Debbie Harmon conducted the funeral at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Grandle Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hottinger was buried at Cedar Run Church of the Brethren cemetery.
Grattan G. R
Tiffin, Ohio - Grattan G. Rinker, 88, died at 12:15 p.m., Thursday, June 12, at St. Francis Home.
Born May 20, 1920, in Shenandoah County, Virginia, his parents were David C. Rinker and Ada C. Rinker, who both preceded him in death.
He worked at the Tiffin Post Office for 27 years and was a member of both the American Legion and the Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Rinker was awarded the Knight Templar Cross of Honor Award and was a 1939 graduate of Columbian High School.
He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Rinker is survived by his wife Wilma E. Lehman in Tiffin and his two sons, John M. Rinker of Tiffin and Richard L. Rinker of Columbus. His sister, June Bollinger of Tiffin, and his grandson, Michael A. Rinker of London, Ohio, also survive him.
A private family service was held at Greenlawn cemetery. Engle-Shook Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Budd Kennedy Sager
Richmond - Budd Kennedy Sager, 54, died on June 9, 2008.
Mr. Sager was the son of Bud Stewart Sager and Betty Green Sager Parson and was a dedicated employee of Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Forest Campus.
Surviving are his three sisters, Victoria Sager LeFon, Sherry Sager Birckhead and Alcinda Sue Sager; his uncles, Philip A. Sager, Dr. Richard K. Green and Dr. Harry B. Green; his two aunts, Suzanne Green Hofe and Dorothy Sager Shotwell; his brother-in-law, John Kevin Birckhead, his niece, Carolyn Elizabeth Lefon; and his three nephews, Stephen Carter LeFon, Gerald Alan Birckhead and Kevin Stuart Birckhead.
The family received friends from 4 to 5 p.m., June 13, at Bliley’s-Staples Mill at 8510 Staples Mill Rd. A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. He was interred privately in Woodstock.
Robert Charles Christiansen Jr.
LOUISA - Robert Charles Christiansen Jr., 40, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Christiansen was born in Washington, D.C., son of the late Robert Charles Christiansen, Sr. He was a member of New Life Community Church, Louisa, and was a master carpenter and a waste water treatment plant operator for Aqua America.
Surviving are his wife, Diana L. Christiansen; his mother, Ann Marie McCarty; paternal grandfather, Charles R. Christiansen; maternal grandmother, Rachel Boone; sons, Robert C. Christiansen III and Jarrett W. Christiansen; daughter, Annie K. Christiansen; his former wife, Terry Christiansen of Mount Jackson; stepsons, Michael D. Kennedy Jr. and Justin E. Maddox; stepdaughter, Lynsey M. Maddox; step-grandsons, Patchrick D. Kennedy and Ian T. Talbott; brother, James Christiansen; sister, Debbie Pavan-Peterman; and extended family and friends.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Josh Turner at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at New Life Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Life Community Church, Louisa, VA. Donations received will be used for families in need of Teen Challenge.
Berlyn Frederick Cook
WOODSTOCK - Berlyn Frederick Cook, 77, died Monday, May 5, 2008, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Mr. Cook was born Jan. 23, 1921, in Woodstock, son of the late Jessie Frederick and Clara Virginia Coffman Cook. He was a 1949 graduate of Woodstock High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Woodstock, American Legion Post No. 199, Woodstock Moose Lodge No. 575, Massanutten Antique Tractor and Gasoline Engine Club, International Order of Bastards, Independent Order of Odd Fellows Shenandoah Lodge Nov. 82, American Rifle Association and a life member of Edinburg VFW Post No. 2447.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Stephen Cook of Winchester and Martin Lynn Cook of Stephens City; two daughters, Marilyn Diane Cook and Mona Lee Sibert and husband Arthur Jr., all of Woodstock; two brothers, Allen Lee Cook of Woodstock and Lester Wayne Cook of Edinburg.

Betty Lou DiPasquale
STRASBURG - Betty Lou DiPasquale, 75, died April 29, 2008, at Heritage Hall Health Care in Front Royal.
Mrs. DiPasquale was born Aug. 20, 1932, in Strasburg, daughter of the late Robert C. and Della Wolverton Pence. She retired from Mosler Inc. in New Jersey.
Surviving are two sisters, Peggy Rosenberger of Strasburg and Elizabeth “Katy” Baker of Fishers Hill.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be private.

Beverley Leon Downey
EDINBURG - Beverley Leon Downey, 84, died Friday, May 2, 2008.
Mr. Downey was born March 31, 1924, in Mount Jackson, son of the late Charles H. and Gladys Shaffer Downey. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Normandy invasion and recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of Edinburg VFW Post 2447 and was the husband of the late Neda Nicholson Downey.
Surviving are four sons, Barry L. Downey of Basye, Gary L. Downey, Beverly L. “Boots” Downey and Jerry Downey, all of Mount Jackson; stepson, Mark Click Jr. of Culver, Ind.; three stepdaughters, Betty J. Miller of Edinburg, Ida Bowers of Staunton and Frances Ridout of Westerville, Ohio; sister, Louise Beedle of Edinburg; brother, Bill Downey of Mount Jackson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Cedarwood cemetery, Edinburg, with the Rev. John F. Taylor Jr. officiating and military honors by Edinburg VFW 2447.
