Eva Virginia Nicholson
(September 1, 1922 - June 16, 2011)
Eva Virginia Nicholson, 88, of Harrisonburg, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Clover Hill on September 1, 1922, and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Cynthia (Berry) Kiracofe.
Eva was a retired sales associate at Woolworth, and had worked for B. Neys and the Charles Store. She was a member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church. She sang on WSVA in the late 1930's on the Saturday Night Barn Dance.
She was united in marriage to Everett Nicholson, Sr. on October 22,1938, who preceded her in death on May 19, 1978.
Eva is survived by a daughter, June Chandler of Denton, TX; two sons, Everett Nicholson Jr., husband of Barbara of Pleasant Valley, VA; and William Nicholson, husband of Eleanor of Mountain Valley, VA; Eva is also survived by a sister, Cynthia Peters of San Antonio, TX; and a brother, Sam Kiracofe of Harrisonburg. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.
Eva was preceded in death by one granddaughter, one great granddaughter, one sister, and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 20, 2011 with Rev. Kelly A. Lane officiating. Burial will follow at Beaver Creek Church.

Lewin Poe Jr.
WARREN COUNTY - Lewin Irving "Pappy" Poe, Jr. 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at his home.
He was born February 23, 1926, in Marshall, VA son of the late Lewin Irvin Poe, Sr. and Alma B. Poe. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and retired as a builder.
Surviving are his wife Verna Carter Poe; four sons George I. Poe, Michael Poe, and Donald Poe all of Front Royal; Ronald W. Poe of South Carolina; one sister Dorothy Johnson of New Market; eight grandchildren Georgia Bohlmann, Cary Helmick, Todd Poe, Michael Poe, Jason Poe, Kaitlin Poe, Aaron Poe, and Mandy Poe; and eleven great-grandchildren Ashleigh Bohl-mann, Ty Helmick, Nicholas Helmick, Tyler Poe, Brett Bohlmann, Tanner Poe, Maureen Poe, Brayden Poe, Alexis Cynthia Ann Poe, Alexis Poe, and Grayce Woodall. He was preceded in death by a son Jerry Poe; and two sisters Frances Poe and Madoline Keyser.
A funeral service was conducted on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Maddox Funeral Home by Elder Gary Utz. Entombment was at Panorama Memorial Gardens in Waterlick.

Esther Mae Houghton Andrews
BERRYVILLE - Esther Mae Houghton Andrews, 80, died Sept. 3, 2008, at her home.
Mrs. Andrews was born Aug. 2, 1928, in Front Royal, daughter of Burney “Pete” E. and Ella Ramey Houghton. She was a homemaker and wife of Sandy E. Andrews.
Surviving are a son, James E. Andrews of Stanardsville; three daughters, Pauline G. Walker of Gordonsville, Carolyn S. Nichols of Gore and Gloria J. Sumner of Bladensburg, Md.; sister, Mildred Barr of Front Royal; two brothers, Larry Houghton of Mount Jackson and Thomas MIller of Strasburg; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were private.

Blanche Barr
PETERSBURG, W.VA. - Blanche Barr, 77, died Aug. 31, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Sharon Ketterman.
Mrs. Barr was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Kessel, W.Va., daughter of the late Glen Huffman Barr and Delena Simmons Barr. She and her husband owned and operated Barr’s Texaco/Citgo in Petersburg, W.Va., for over 30 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Petersburg.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Donald E. Barr; son, Donnie Glen Barr of Petersburg, W.Va.; three daughters, Judy Barr Brushaber of Concord, Sharon Barr Ketterman of Petersburg, W.Va., and Wanda Barr Cayton of Franklin, W.Va.; three sisters, Margel Barr Cain of Dunbar, W.Va., Jean Barr Swick of Petersburg, W.Va., and Louella Barr Beeler of Strasburg; eight grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Dr. James A. Ash conducted the funeral service Sept. 3 at Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren, Moorefield, W.Va. Burial followed in Walnut Grove Gardens in Moorefield.

Thelma Elizabeth Guthrie

Thelma Elizabeth Guthrie, 78, of Bridgewater died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Thelma was born in Harrisonburg, August 30, 1933 and was a daughter of the late John Bates and Gladys Glenn and her adopted parents, Minor and Janie Boyers.
She retired after 46 years of service as a bookkeeper with Riddleberger Brothers in Mount Crawford. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.
She was united in marriage August 30, 1958 to Lennie T. Guthrie, who survives.
In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Sandra Knicely and husband Donald of Bridgewater; two sons Ray Guthrie and wife Judith of Bridgewater, and Steven and Lora Guthrie of Rawley Springs; and one sister, June Glickman of FL. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Chad and Gabe Moyers, Sandon Knicely, Brandon, Adam and Jaclyn Guthrie, and Steven Guthrie, and four great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service Chapel in Bridgewater, with Rev. Cole Scrogham officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at the funeral home.

Clarice Virginia Casto
HEATHSVILLE - Clarice Virginia Casto, 86, widow of the Rev. Rufus D. Casto, died Sept. 6, 2008.
Mrs. Casto is survived by a son, Dave M. Casto and his wife Janice of Woodstock; daughter, Sandra K. Johnson and husband Douglas of Heathsville; sister, Cosettie Dolan of Poca, W.Va.; brother, Leonard McClanahan of Marmet, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A service of committal will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Derek Ritenour.

Mary May Neff, 56, of Mount Crawford, died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at her home.
Mary was born in Harrisonburg on May 18, 1955, and was the daughter of the late Orvil Whetzel and Anna Turner.
She worked at Bridgewater Retirement Community.
Mary is survived by two sons, Chris Nichols and wife Christine of Harrisonburg, and Dwight Neff of Grottoes; and her companion, Kenny Gordon. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Kaylee Neff.
A memorial service will be conducted 5:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater, with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. At her request, her body has been cremated.

Doris Jean Cromer

Doris Jean Cromer, 81, of Bridgewater, died Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg with her family by her side.
Doris was born in Rockingham County on January 7, 1930, and was a daughter of the late Wade and Ora (Boyer) Armentrout.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Brenda Layman and husband Dwight of Dayton, and Billie Stickley and husband Keith of Grottoes; two sons, Swanson Cromer of Bridgewater, and Fred Cromer of Hinton, VA; a sister, Joyce Allman and husband Homer of Dayton; two brothers, Carl Armentrout and wife Nancy of Keezletown, and Kennis Armentrout and wife Carolyn of Keezletown. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Christy, DJ, Carla, and Zach; and five great grandchildren, Brittany, Brandon, Carly, Lexie, and Madison.
In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by three brothers, Grover, Ralph, and Fred Armentrout, and two sisters, Carolyn Hensley, and Margaret Dove.
A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Briery Branch Church cemetery, with Pastor Randy Cosner officiating. A meal will follow at the church fellowship hall.

Irene Theresa Davis
SILVER SPRING, MD. - Irene Theresa Davis, formerly of Maurertown, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in Muncie, Ind.
Mrs. Davis was born June 6, 1920, in Washington, D.C. She retired from Hecht Comany Finance Dept. in Silver Spring, was a member of Court Forest Glen Chapter of Catholic Daughters of America and served as Grand Regent. She and her husband were founding members of St. Bernadette Church where all eight of their children graduated from the parish school. She was a lifelong member of Sodality at St. Bernadette’s and was one of the first women lectors. She coached girls volleyball, was a Girl Scout leader and an ardent fan of her sons’ baseball and football teams. She was a member of Mary Knights Auxiliary of Father Rosentsteel Council Knights of Columbus, and the wife of the late James B. Davis Sr.
Surviving are five daughters, Irene Clagett, Bonnie Seidle, Patricia Marriott, Kathleen Adams, and Violet Henry (of Maurertown); two sons, William Davis and J. Michael Davis; four sisters, Harriet Daniels, M. Winifred Biddle, Connie Sullivan and Sarah Carroll; brother, William J. Tyrrell; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at St. Bernadette’s Church, 72 University Blvd. East, Silver Spring. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Mary W, Wine
(April 2, 1920 - October 30, 2011)
Mary W. Wine, 91, died Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Oak Lea in Harrisonburg.
She was born in Bridgewater, on April 2, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Isadora (Campbell) Williams.
Mary graduated from Bridgewater High School and Dunsmore Business College. She worked as a legal secretary for many years for the Rockingham County Administrator prior to retirement, and was a lifelong member of the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church.
On April 25, 1964, she was married
to Joseph F. Wine, Sr. who predeceased her on April 7, 1967. She was also preceded by a step-son, Joseph F. Wine, Jr., two sisters, two brothers and a niece.
She is survived by a step-daughter, Mary L. "Liz" Bodkin and husband Wade of Bridgewater, step daughter-in-law, Frances Wine of Staunton, two step granddaughters, two step great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Oaklawn cemetery in Bridgewater, with Rev. Kerry Foster officating.

Billy Eugene Dove
NEW MARKET - Billy Eugene Dove, 65, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at his home.
Mr. Dove was born April 27, 1943, in Harrisonburg, son of Imogene Marston Dove Cook of Front Royal and the late Walton Dove. He had worked for Shenandoah County School System, Battlefield Museum of New Market, New Market Exxon and had been employed by Virginia Departments of Transportation and Corrections for 30 years.
Surviving with his mother are his wife, Leona Good Dove; two daughters, Patricia Mongold and Debbie Firkin, both of New Market; two foster daughters, Sharon Morris of Grottoes and Floressa Williams of Linville; sister, Jeane Dorman of Clarke County; a half brother, Danny Cook of Front Royal; his stepfather, Bob Cook; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted Monday, Sept. 8, at Emmanuel Lutheran cemetery, New Market, by the Rev. Jeffrey Sonafelt.
