Harrisonburg - Richard E. Mills (Jay) of Harrisonburg died Sunday July 18, 2010 at the age of 88. He was the loving husband of Janet Heatwole Mills. They were married
on August 17, 1946. Mr. Mills was born and raised in Gaithersburg, MD. and was the son of the late Richard and Laveta Mills. He was a graduate of Gaithersburg High School and proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Upon his return he embarked on a career with the C&P; Telephone Company which lasted for over forty years. He was a loving father, an accomplished musician, a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Rockville Lions Club and an active member of the Rockville Presbyterian Church. In 1986 he and his wife relocated to Harrisonburg where he transferred his membership to the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church and very much enjoyed his retirement years. He especially loved playing golf at Lakeview Golf Course with his golfing buddies. Mr. Mills is survived by his wife and four children; Richard and Nancy Mills of Anderson, SC; Eric and Kathy Mills, Ijamsville, MD; Susan Syckes, Woodbridge, VA; and Sandra Mills, Rockville, MD; six grandchildren: Heather and Sam Fatnasi, Quebec, Canada; Stanton Syckes, New York City, NY; Steven Syckes, Arlington, VA; Zachary and Alexandra Mills, Bryn Maur, PA; Jessica Mills, Frederick MD; and Catherine Mills, Ijamesville, MD; a sister-in-law, Joyce Parkinson, a brother-in-law, Neill Heatwole and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Rev. George Evans will conduct a funeral service Thursday July 22, 2010, at 11a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Weavers cemetery. Harrisonburg - Geneva Frances Tusing, 86, died July 29, 2010 at Oak Lea Nursing Home where she had been a resident for two years. Ms. Tusing was born on March 10, 1924 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Claude Cleveland and Ressie Pearl Gassman Swartz. She worked as a secretary for M & S Corporation and she owned and operated the Laundromat in Timberville. She was a member of Weavers Mennonite Church. Surviving are a brother, Carroll Swartz, Dayton, two nieces and three nephews and her caregiver, Jane Burkholder, Harrisonburg. Ms. Tusing was preceded in death by a sister Ethel Coakley and her husband Lawrence Richard Tusing. Judy Lane Shifflett, 58, a resident of Fulks Run, died Friday, August 6, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Shifflett was born on November 1, 1951 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Charles Hinton and Dorothy Shifflett Conley. She was a homemaker and member of Gospel Hill Mennonite Church. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend. On September 18, 1968, she married
Johnny E. Shifflett who survives. Also surviving are four children, Johnny Shifflett Jr., Angie Shifflett, both of Fulks Run, Stacey Shifflett and wife Echo of Lost City, West Virginia, Felicia Shifflett of Harrisonburg; four sisters, Margaret Comer and husband Roger of Luray, Barbara Phillips and husband Rick of Singers Glen, Bertie Thompson and husband Rick of Harrisonburg, Lisa Ellis of Fulks Run; and five grandchildren. Lelia Esther Eberly Deputy, 70, a resident of Singers Glen, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Mrs. Deputy was born on April 13, 1940 in Rockingham County was the daughter of the late Marion Israel and Reba Rosalie Rhodes Eberly. She graduated in 1958 from Turner Ashby High School, and Massanutten Technical Center. She was employed as a LPN at Rockingham Memorial Hospital and Bridgewater Retirement Community for twenty six years. She was the former president of the Singers Glen Ruritan Club. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a member of Weavers Mennonite Church. On September 5, 1959, she married
Ronald LeRoy Deputy, Sr. who survives. Also surviving are her children, Ronald “Ronnie Lee” LeRoy, Jr. and wife Nancy Ann (Nieling) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Reba Rosanne Deputy and husband David Black Heizer of Fairfield, Virginia, Anthony Lynn Deputy, Raleigh Jay Deputy and wife Shandra Dawn (Matters) all of Harrisonburg; brothers and sisters, Ava Catherine Griffin of Stuarts Draft, Frederick Ellsworth Eberly of Harrisonburg, Robert Neil Eberly of Mt. Crawford, Marion “Buddy” Raleigh Eberly of Dayton, Mandell Lillian Shank of Dayton; and grandchildren, Megan Renee Deputy, Matthew William Deputy, Benjamin Preston Heizer, Leah Heizer-McCown, Emily Jane Heizer, Levi David Heizer, Fae Valentine Deputy, and Ronin Tyler Deputy. Harrisonburg - Anne Buchanan McCorkle, 86, died suddenly, September 5, 2010 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. McCorkle was born on November 6, 1923 in Brownsburg, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Eugene and Margaret Bear Buchanan. She was a 1944 graduate of Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. On June 8, 1945, she married
in New Providence Presbyterian Church, David E. McCorkle who survives. She was an active volunteer at the Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Community since the 1960’s serving in many capacities. Mrs. McCorkle was a member of the Linville-Edom Home Demonstration Club for many years and loved to play bridge. She and her husband moved to Sunnyside in 2002. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg. Also surviving are three children, Elizabeth (Bitty) McCorkle Yancey and husband Robert (Bob), Charlottesville; Roberta McCorkle Fernandez and husband Peter, Brussels, Belgium; David E. McCorkle Jr, and wife Joanne Miller McCorkle, Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Sara Yancey, Toronto, Canada; Tom Yancey, Blacksburg, Virginia; Belen Fernandez, Brussels, Belgium; Meridith Anne McCorkle, Charlottesville. Mrs. Kibler was born on September 2, 1937 in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Franklin Owen and Marie Frances Good Deavers. She was a homemaker and provided child care for over fifty children. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. On August 22, 1964, she married
Samuel Weldon Kibler, Sr. who died on May 17, 2007. Surviving is a daughter, Connie Correa of Harrisonburg, a son, Gary W. Deavers of Linville, a step son, Samuel W. Kibler, Jr. and wife Kay of Broadway, a sister and brother, Shirley Shifflett and Johnny Deavers both of Harrisonburg, two grandchildren, Jeremy Kibler and wife Lauren of Broadway, Ben Correa of Harrisonburg, and two step grandchildren, Sabrina Harrison and Ashley Crider. Mrs. Kibler was also preceded in death by a brother Henry G. Deavers, Sr. Reverend Brian Posey will conduct a funeral service on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel. M. Weldon “Pete” Shiplett, 86

Harrisonburg - Millard Weldon “Pete” Shiplett, 86, Harrisonburg went to be with his Lord on September 5, 2010. He died at home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Shiplett was born on May 12, 1924 in Harrisonburg to the late Millard Wise and Bessie Catherine Long Shiplett. He graduated from Dayton High School in 1941. On March 13, 1943, he was inducted and found it an honor to serve his country during World War II in the United States Army 981st Field Artillery Battalion Battery C as a cannoneer 845. He was honorably discharged on December 2, 1945. Weldon was U.S. Postal Clerk at the Harrisonburg Post Office from January 1950 to September 1979 when he retired. He was a devoted and active member of West Side Baptist Church. He served as a member on several committees as well as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He and his wife were caretakers of the church for 20 years. He was an avid stamp collector, appreciator of music and nature lover. On June 22, 1946, he married
the former Josephine Taylor who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Sandra Faye Garber and husband Jeff of Weyers Cave; Granddaughter, Lori Ann Miller of Raliegh, North Carolina; Grandson, Christopher Garber and wife Taunya of Weyers Cave; two great grandchildren, Taylor Brooke and Ian Scott Garber, Weyers Cave and three step great grandchildren Kayla, Moriah and Jadon all of Weyers Cave and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Shiplett was preceded in death by a twin daughter Brenda Kaye. Weldon had a love for the Lord, a never ending supply of stories to share and leaves a legacy for family and friends that will long inspire and sustain them. Harrisonburg - Marie Hershey Leaman Shenk, 72, Harrisonburg died September 7, 2010 at her home at Park Gables of the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Mrs. Shenk was born on May 25, 1938, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was the daughter of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Hershey Leaman. She was a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School and received a B.A. in Liberal Arts with a minor in Missions from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg and a M.A. in Religion from Eastern Mennonite Seminary, Harrisonburg. On August 30, 1958, she married
Calvin E. Shenk who survives. Also surviving are two sons Douglas Shenk and wife Elaine, Hummelstown, PA; Duane Shenk and wife Tanya, Harrisonburg; one daughter, Donna Shenk and husband Ryan Sensenig, Goshen, IN; nine grandchildren, Jamila, Andre, Nathaniel, Alia, Alyssa, Addison, Ava, Mara, and Isaac; one brother, M. Hershey Leaman and wife Norma, Lititz, PA; two sisters, Evelyn Sweigart and husband John, Lititz,PA; Elizabeth Lehman and husband John, Harrison Valley, PA; and a sister-in-law, Grace Leaman, Lincoln University, PA. Betty Detweiler King, 82, died peacefully on Friday, September 17, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va., surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Souderton, Pennsylvania, on March 10, 1928, the daughter of Lillian and Elmer Detweiler and the sister of Richard and Robert Detweiler, all of whom are now deceased. She resided at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC) in Harrisonburg. Betty is survived by her husband of 60 years, Aaron, and her eight children: Michael (Joan Kenerson) of Telford, Pa., and Harrisonburg, Va.; Jewel (Angela Kreider) of Scottsville, Va.; Robert of Philadelphia, Pa.; Steven Wiebe-King (Jill Wiebe) of Richmond, Va.; Marty (Sharon Geigley) of Harrisonburg, Va.; Noël of Keswick, Va.; Heidi of Wakarusa, Ind.; and Starla (Sandy Manne) of Ashburn, Va. Her daughter Angela passed away in 2001. Betty is also survived by eight grandchildren: Michael and Joan's daughters, Kristy (Adam Hamilton), Katie, and Rachael (J. Michael Harnish); Steven and Jill's children, Juliet and RobertThomas; and Marty and Sharon's children, Eric, Kari, and Andy. Betty and Aaron and their family were missionaries in Cuba and Mexico before returning to live in Harrisonburg in the 1970s, where they continued to be active in the church and community. The family presented musical programs for a number of years, and Betty and Aaron were very involved in the Hispanic community, as well as in prison ministry. Betty was one of the first women ordained in the Virginia Mennonite Conference, to allow her to serve alongside Aaron as a prison chaplain. Betty, who learned to play the piano from her beloved Aunt Esther Musselman at the age of six, loved music in particular and taught piano for many years as well as being an accomplished piano player herself. Fluent in Spanish, she enjoyed working as a translator in the local community. Betty also loved to write and to gather her family around her whenever possible for parties and celebrations. Betty, also known as “the Queen” to her family and friends, will be sorely missed by many. A private burial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, at Lindale Mennonite Church in Harrisonburg, followed by a public memorial service at 3 p.m. at the church. Visitation with the family will be held in two places: 9-11 a.m. in Strite Auditorium at VMRC and also 1:30-3 p.m. at Lindale Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betty may be made to Eastern Mennonite University or to Virginia Mennonite Missions. Betty and Aaron, all nine of their children, and many of their grandchildren and in-laws attended EMU, and missions work has always been close to Betty’s heart. Harrisonburg - Mildred Irene Lahman Martin, 90, went peacefully home to Heaven on October 3, 2010, at home in Harrisonburg where she has resided for 9 years with her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Ken Isner. Mrs. Martin was born on March 2, 1920 to the late Byard E. and Ethel Heatwole Lahman. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, intent on living for Jesus, serving and passing on her faith to others. She loved children and taught children’s classes at Gospel Hill Mennonite Church, Weavers Mennonite Church and was currently a member of Bank Mennonite Church. Music was a treasured feature all of her life and she sang with various groups whenever she had the opportunity. For 25 years she was employed by Park View Press/Christian Light Publications. She set type and co-edited and wrote some of the children’s literature. On October 8, 1940, she married
Merle Eugene Martin who preceded her in death October 28, 2001. She is survived by three daughters: Eleanor Isner and husband Ken of Harrisonburg; Charlene Duncan and husband James, Asheville, NC; Dorothy Swartzendruber and husband Dennis, Pigeon, MI; six grandchildren, Kendra Isner, Cheryl (Brendan) Hynes, Melinda Swartzendruber, Kari (Matt) Keefer, Greg (Carin) Duncan, Tama (Tim) Shoemaker, and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Doris Yoder, Shipshewana, IN and Mary Ethel (Milton) Heatwole, Harrisonburg, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Lahman, Elkton; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Her brother Harold H. Lahman preceded her in death. There will be no viewing at the funeral home. Viewing and visitation will be available on Saturday, October 9, 2010, 9:30-11a.m. at Bank Mennonite Church.
