Marion “Jack” David Hawse, Jr., 88, a resident of Waynesboro, died May 16, 2010 at his home. Mr. Hawse was born on November 1, 1921 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Marion and Hortense Trumbo Hawse. Mr. Hawse was a member of Glovier Memorial United Methodist Church. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was retired from Brown Transport. On June 14, 1943, he married
the former Elva Roberta Shaver who preceded him in death in 2001. Survivors include his son, Marion David Hawse, III of Waynesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheree and Newton Gillespie of Waynesboro; a sister-in-law, Mabel Shaver; and nieces and nephews, Linda Sue Ritchie, Karen Shaver, Carl Spitzer, John Shaver and Billy Shaver. Mr. Hawse was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Hawse Spitzer. Pastor Chuck Wiest will conduct a graveside service on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Singers Glen cemetery. Harrisonburg - Mahlon Martin Horst, 89, a resident of Oak Lea Nursing Home died August 31, 2010. Mr. Horst was born on July 30, 1921, in Hagerstown, Maryland and was the son of the late Martin L. and Mary Baer Horst. He worked as a church planter/pastor with the Virginia Mennonite missions in Eastern Kentucky and founding pastor and member of the Lucas Hollow Mennonite Church in Stanley, Virginia. He and his wife moved to the Harrisonburg are in the mid 1990’s and attended Timberville Mennonite Church. On September 8, 1946, he married
the former Leah Shank who survives. Also surviving are children, Kenneth Horst and wife Sue, Harrisonburg; Judith Kauffman and husband Paul, Granada, Spain; Gerald Horst and wife Marjo, Aurora, Ohio; Karen Burkholder and husband Dale, Mt. Crawford; fourteen grandchildren, Patrick Horst, Christopher Horst, Alicia Horst, Stephen Horst, Kristin Bucher, Kenton Kauffman, Kirk Kauffman, Brandon Horst, Aaron Horst, Jordan Horst, Anthony Burkholder, Bradley Burkholder, Joshua Burkholder, and Andre Burkholder; and fourteen great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Fred Rodes, Tony Cubbage, Sam Cordeman and Daryl Yoder will conduct a funeral service Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 2p.m. at Calvary Mennonite Church. Burial will follow at Lindale cemetery with Arlen Benner officiating. Peck Hoover died Friday, May 21, 2010. Mr. Hoover was born on February 26, 1928 in Singers Glen, VA and was the son of the late Weldon Frazier and Shirley Myers Hoover. On July 18, 1950, he married
the former Ellen High Foley. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ellen Hoover; his children: Lee Hoover, Jr. and wife Nancy of Corolla, NC; Debbie Buzard and husband Gregg of Bristow, VA; Lyle Hoover and Jane Decker of Waterford, PA; grandson Adam Buzard and wife Allison of Saint Charles, MO; brother, Ted Hoover and wife Lois of Harrisonburg, VA. Mr. Hoover was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Sotack and a sister, Maxine Silman and her husband Bud. Carl Ashby Gladwell, 84, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Friday, May 7, 2010 at his home. Mr. Gladwell was born on July 23, 1925 in Harrisonburg, and was the son of the late Minor C. and Daisy Snyder Gladwell. He was a forman for Frazier’s Quarry and J. F. Allen from which he retired. He was an avid raccoon hunter. He was a member of the Spring Creek Nazarene Church. On August 18, 1951, he married
the former Maxine Shull who survives. Also surviving are five children, Carl E. (Gene) Gladwell, Jerry Gladwell, Glenda Gladwell, Tresa Gladwell and David Gladwell; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Nelson Ward Spitzer, 98, of Harrisonburg, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Oak Lea Nursing Home. Mr. Spitzer was born on February 3, 1912 in Edom, Virginia and was the son of the late Charles H. and Myrtle Chapman Spitzer. He was a World War II Veteran and was a member of the Chimney Rock V.F.W. He was a carpenter and also worked the Virginia Department of Transportation until his retirement. He was a mason with the Harrisonburg Masonic Lodge #27 and also a member of the Donovan Memorial Church. On August 9, 1946 he married
the former Ruth Orendorf who died on January 22, 2009. Surviving are a brother, Marvin H. Spitzer of Somerville, MA; nieces and nephews, Linda Ritchie of Linville, Carl Spitzer of Arlington, Patricia Durgin and Edward Spitzer of Somerville, MA, Gary Orendorf of Sunset Beach, N.C., Ron Ordendorf of Hightown, N.J., and a number of great nieces and nephews. Mr. Spitzer was preceded in death by a daughter, Dr. E. Anne Spitzer on November 13, 1988, two brothers, Emmer and Shirley Spitzer and a nephew Robert D. Michele Ann Pruett, 36, a resident of Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, died Sunday, May 30, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Pruett was born on January 24, 1974 in Harrisonburg, and was the daughter of Marvin C. and Emma H. Phillips. She graduated from Gateway High School and ITT School of Technology with honors in electronics. Along with her parents, she is survived by her husband John Pruett, Lower Burrell, Pa., two brothers, Marvin Lee Phillips, of Atlanta, Ga., Ernest Brian Phillips of Tampa, Fl., and a sister, Rebecca Joy Myers of Pittsburg, Pa. Pastor Brian Gillespie will conduct a funeral service on Friday afternoon, at 1:00 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home. Wayne Lewis Sneary, 41

Harrisonburg - Wayne Lewis Sneary, 41, a resident of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at his home. Mr. Sneary was born on July 27, 1968 in Park City, Kansas and was the son of Barbara Souders Sneary and the late Floyd Sneary. He was previously employed by Community Construction. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, travel, hiking, the outdoors and playing cards. Mr. Sneary had a great love and appreciation for children of all ages and had wonderful sense of humor. He was a member of Community Mennonite Church where he served as youth group sponsor, usher, and attended the Donut Sunday School Class. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and Mennonite Disaster Service. On July 25, 1992, he married
Shannon Martens who survives along with their children Justus, Jalyn and Jedrek. Also surviving are two sisters, Susan Sneary Espinoza of Indiana, Katharine Sneary Beachy of Florida, and a brother, Andrew Sneary of Arkansas. Pastor Jennifer Davis Sensenig will conduct a graveside service on Monday morning, June 7, 2010 at Lindale Mennonite cemetery at 9:30 a.m. The memorial service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Community Mennonite Church and will be followed by a light meal. Leonard Quentin Hollar

Leonard Q. Hollar, 83, of Singers Glen died Thursday, June 3 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Mr. Hollar was born January 11, 1927 in Singers Glen, Virginia and was the son of the late Forrest H. Hollar and Vera Hill Hollar. He was a graduate of Linville-Edom High School and attended Shenandoah College in Dayton. He owned and operated Hollar’s Garage, first with his father, and together they manufactured and sold Hollar Garden Tractors in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also owned and operated Vacation Trailers in Singers Glen through which he sold recreational vehicles and installed numerous towing hitches for local residents. He also operated the home farm where he grew up in Singers Glen. Mr. Hollar was a life-long member of Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as a Trustee. He was a member of the Rockingham West Camp of Gideons International and served as President and Chaplain in the past. Singers Glen Ruritan Club recognized him in 2000 for 50 years of service and in 2008 the Ruritan Hall was named the Leonard Q. Hollar Ruritan Center. He was in active participant in the local Parkinson’s Support Group for many years and was a Master Mason of Rockingham Union Lodge #27. Mr. Hollar sang second tenor for the Four Tones Quartet which was popular in the local area in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He loved music, particularly gospel music, and he sang in other local groups over the years. He is survived by his wife, the former Thelma Floyd who has been a loving wife since their marriage on September 14, 1946. She was a devoted caregiver for many years as he battled Parkinson’s disease. Also surviving are two sons, Hunter Hollar and his wife Mary Margaret of Singers Glen, and, Barry Penn Hollar and his wife Jayne of Oak Park, Virginia; three grandchildren, Sarah Hill Buczynski of Crozet, Maureen Hollar of Charlottesville and Quentin Penn Hollar of New York, New York; one great-granddaughter, Ava Grace Buczynski of Crozet; and two sisters, Mabel Miller of Harrisonburg and Maxine Boyers of Staunton. The Rev. Jim Radford and the Rev. Bob Smith will conduct funeral services at 2:00pm Sunday, June 6 at Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Singers Glen cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 pm Saturday, June 5 at McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road, Harrisonburg. Jerry Ray Simmons, 74, a resident of Dayton, died Friday, June 4, 2010 at his home. Mr. Simmons was born on February 2, 1936 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Lorene Simmons. He was raised by his grandfather, Ike Simmons. He graduated from Mt. Clinton High School and was previously employed by Wampler Foods. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher. On March 9, 1957 he married
Jean Simmons who survives. Surviving are four children, Diana Simmons, Karen Reedy and husband David, Jerry Ray Simmons, Jr., and Mike Simmons all of Dayton, two sisters, Phyllis Fullerton of White Post, Va., Debbie Hilbert of Verona, six grandsons, one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Dale Harmon. Pastor Ken Dolan will conduct a graveside service on Monday afternoon, June 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Simmons Family cemetery. Hinton - Paul Delmar Harper, 80, Hinton, died Monday, May 4, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harper was born on May 31, 1928 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Jacob Delmar and Ethel May Simmons Harper. Mr. Harper was a beef and poultry farmer in the Hinton community. He graduated from Mt. Clinton School, and also drove a school bus for the school. He was owner and driver of his own truck, delivering lumber, apples, saw dust and miscellaneous goods for the local community. He was an active member and trustee of Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. On December 22, 1948, he married
the former Frances Jean Smith who survives. Surviving in addition to his wife is, one daughter, Paulette Riggleman, Dayton; two sons, Dennis W. Harper, and wife Linda F., Harrisonburg, D. Bruce Harper and wife Janet R., Dayton; two sisters, Lois H. Sherfey, Harrisonburg, Mary H. Wheelbarger; three brothers, Carroll Harper, Edsel Harper, and Raymond Harper all of Harrisonburg; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Mr. Harper was preceded in death by one grand daughter Julie Ann Harper. Reverend Tom Holden will conduct a funeral service Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Olive Presbyterian Church. Broadway - Ethel S. Cackowski, 79, of Broadway, died Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Mrs. Cackowski was born on November 20, 1929, in New York and was the daughter of the late Fred and Josephine Costa Iacampo. She was a member of the New Market Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed living in “The Valley” since 1980. She liked antiques, painting and being president of A.A.R.P. Chapter 29 in Harrisonburg. She was a Carrier Supervisor for the Daily News Record and a Jailor at the Rockingham County Jail until her retirement in 1992. She was telephone operator while living in New York. She married
Leon M. Cackowski, Sr. of New York who survives. Surviving are three sons, Leon M. Cackowski Jr., Richard T. Cackowski, Martin J. Cackowski, all of Staten Island, New York; one daughter, Melanie Cackowski, Staten Island, New York; three sisters, Mary Murphy, Santa Belle, Florida; Anna Leanza and Carol Tester, both of Bel Air, Maryland; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 7p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service that will be held at 7 p.m. The body was cremated and interment will be held at a later date at Bel Air Memorial Gardens. Mount Crawford - James Emerson Wilfong, 86, a resident of 6840 Cross Keys Road, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at his home. Mr. Wilfong was born on March 1, 1923 in Dry Fork, West Virginia and was the son of the late Stewart Blaine and Verdie Lisabeth Davis Wilfong and step-mother, Bertha K. White. Mr. Wilfong was a veteran of the United States Army. He owned and operated Wilfong’s Auto Service in Bridgewater for many years. He was a part-time farmer with a genuine love for animals. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church of the Brethren where he served as church Deacon, served on the church board and building committee. He was also chairman of the Mt. Pleasant cemetery board. On June 28, 1952, he married
the former Neva Waggy who survives. Also surviving are four children, Lisabeth Wilfong Wenger and husband Jack, Harrisonburg, William Stuart Wilfong, Indiana, Barry James Wilfong and wife Sharon, Harrisonburg, Linda Wilfong Hall and husband Jim, Mount Crawford; one brother, Owen Wayne Wilfong and wife Dolores of Harrisonburg; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Harrisonburg - Jarvis Allen Ritchie, 61, a resident of 10781 Indian Trail Road, Harrisonburg, died May 6, 2009 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ritchie was born on April 22, 1948 in Rockingham County and was the son of the late E.P. Ritchie, Jr. and Gatha Ritchie Frank Simmons. Mr. Ritchie retired from his floor sanding business which he owned and operated. He was a member of local car clubs, and honored his country daily with the flying of the United States Flag. He was a member of Mt. Valley United Methodist Church. On September 20, 1968 he married
the former Vista Gentry who survives. Surviving are two step-sons, Terry Kline and wife Brenda, Grottoes, Marvin Kline, Harrisonburg; two brothers, Donnie Ritchie and Richard Ritchie, both of Harrisonburg; four grandchildren, Sarah Kline, Justin Kline, Kimi Ritchie, Misty McCray. Mr. Ritchie was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Ritchie and step-son Brian Kline.
