Lou Jean Anders

Lou Jean Anders, 87, of Independence, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax from injuries received in an automobile accident in Elk Creek.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 25, at 2:30 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings and the Rev. Allen Mahan officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Grove cemetery.

She was born Sept. 9, 1911 in Independence, a daughter of the late Andrew Hampton and Mollie Myers Hampton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kilby Anders.

She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis and Joe Tom Calloway of Talbott, Tenn., and Charlotte Bolt of Independence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Linda Anders of Christiansburg, and Tommy and Gena Anders of Wytheville; a sister, Pauline Porter of Independence; a son-in-law, J.D. Testerman of Elk Creek; a daughter-in-law, Faye Anders of Independence; 22 grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to Independence Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 607, Independence, VA 24348, or Independence Vol. Fire Dept., P.O. Box 588, Independence, VA 24348.

Larry Andrew Bradley

Larry Andrew Bradley, 52, of Narrows, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in the Princeton Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Rick Painter officiating. Interment followed in the Payne cemetery in Laurel Fork.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy M. Payne Bradley of Rocky Gap; a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Melissa Bradley of Christiansburg; his parents, Andrew Lewis and Evelyn W. Bradley of Narrows; three stepsons and spouses, Robert and Rose Payne, Kerry and Lynn Payne, and Larry and Edith Payne, all of Rocky Gap; two stepdaughters and spouses, Marcella and Ron Ellis of Shelby, N.C., and Susie and Donnie Alley of Wytheville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Wallace Fletcher, and Bonnie and Tom Najar, all of Roanoke; one grandchild, Chelsa Bradley; 10 stepgrandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and two nieces.

Robert Choate Burchette

Robert Choate Burchette, 81, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

He worked for the U.S. Government Printing Office, the Treasury Department and then opened his first photographer's studio. He opened a second studio and became the official U.S. portrait photographer. During the war, he worked under the Secretary of the Navy as chief photographer. He went to work for the Washington Post in 1945. He served as a photographer for the hunting and fishing columnist and took over as writer when the columnist died. He also wrote for other publications, such as the American Antiques Journal, where he wrote features on different antiques. He ran a licensed, chartered fishing boat in the Chesapeake Bay. He also operated a night club in Washington, D.C. When he retired from the Post, he ran the beach snack bar stand in Epping Forest, Annapolis, Md. After rehabilitation from a stroke, he moved to the Retirement Center at Asbury Center at Birdmont. He was a life member of Chillum Castle Masonic Lodge No. 186 of Chillum, Md.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Smyrl; and a son, Robert Choate "Bob" Burchette Jr.

Survivors include a former wife, Dorothy Thomas of Rockville, Md. and Speedwell; one daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne B. and Dan Shoemaker of Hyattsville, Md.; four grandchildren, Sharon Shoemaker of Owings, Md., Brian Shoemaker of Puyallup, Wash., Ben Shoemaker of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Jason Shoemaker of Hyattsville, Md.; two great-granddaughters, Jessica and Allison, both of Puyallup, Wash.; one sister, Grace Hidley of Alphretta, Ga.; and his sister-in-law, Lorine Burchette of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Rosa Stiller Drott

Rosa Stiller Drott, 85, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in Evansham Manor.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. in the West End cemetery with the Rev. W. Wesley Huff officiating.

She is survived by one daughter, Helga A. "Helen" Conrad of Wytheville; grandchildren and their spouses, Peter M. Greene of Wytheville, Patricia A. and Leon Joiner of Atlanta, Ga., Robert J. and Patty Greene of Beauford, S.C., U.S. Navy Commander Timothy M. and Kathy Greene of Memphis, Tenn., and Elizabeth J. and Ty Huband of Lynchburg; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Greene of Beauford, S.C., Timothy Joiner of Atlanta, Ga., Christopher Greene and Andrew Greene, both of Memphis, Tenn., Conrad Huband and Colin Huband, both of Lynchburg; and a special friend, Regina Quesenberry of Radford.

Noah Reeves Sutphin

Noah Reeves Sutphin, 78, a resident of Evansham Manor and formerly of the Stumps Community, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998.

Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment followed in the Sutphin Family cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Dorsey Lee and Ludie Scott Sutphin. He was a member of the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church and was retired from Burlington Industries.

He is survived by two brothers and sister-in-law, James and Terry Sutphin of Wytheville, and Oscar Surratt of Max Meadows; two nieces, Barbara Manuel of Tobaccoville, N.C., and Teresa Nelson of Wytheville; and two nephews, Ronald Rogers and Russell Rogers, both of Max Meadows.

Pamela Anders Testerman

Pamela Anders Testerman, 44, of Elk Creek, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Elk Creek from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Lebanon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Mahan and the Rev. Bobby Lorton officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was born Jan. 16, 1954 in Independence to the late Kilby Anders and Lou Jean Hampton Anders. She was a member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church and was a registrar with Grayson County Voter Registration.

She is survived by her husband, J.D. Testerman of the home; two daughters, Amanda Lynne Testerman and Whitney Paige Testerman, both of the home; two sisters and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Joe Tom Calloway of Talbott, Tenn., and Charlotte Bolt of Independence; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rex and Linda Anders of Christiansburg, and Tommy and Gena Anders of Wytheville; her mother-in-law, Mattie Testerman of Elk Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Elk Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 130, Elk Creek, VA 24326, or Elk Creek Valley Vol. Fire Department, c/o Ronnie Byrd, Rt. 1, Box 487, Elk Creek, VA 24326.

Jesse Willard Bartee

Jesse Willard Bartee, 83, of Speedwell, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Stuart officiating. Interment was in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He was a son of the late James W. and Laura Jennings Bartee and was a retired coal miner and farmer.

He was preceded in death by a son, Eddie R. Bartee.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Wingate Bartee of Speedwell; four sons and five daughters-in-law, Ray P. and Rita M. Bartee of Elgin, S.C., James R. and Christine L. Bartee of Conway, S.C., William Dexter and Agnes R. Bartee of Clinton, Md., Jesse G. and Judith M. Bartee of Bowie, Md., and Carolyn R. Bartee of Christiansburg; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Eva Bartee of Speedwell; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Viola Mae Wright Blankenship

Viola Mae Wright Blankenship, 92, of Route 2, Wilderness Road, Bland, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Mike Bradshaw officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh cemetery, Hollybrook.

She was a daughter of the late John Bowman and Lila Jane Chandler Wright and was born Feb. 7, 1907, in Bland County. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Vance Blankenship; a son, John Charles Blankenship; two sisters, Della Ruth and Myrtle Clair; and a son-in-law, William "Bill" Faulkner Jr.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Faulkner of Bland, Marlene and E.C. Havens of Bland, and Debra and Charles Akers Jr. of Rocky Gap; three sons and daughters-in-law, William Lloyd and Rose Blankenship of Manhattan, Kan., Alfred Lewis Sr. and Mary Ann Blankenship of Bluefield, and Larry and Darlene Blankenship of Braithwaite, La.; five sisters, Minnie Williams of Bland, Ina Ramsey of Bland, Ruby Hale of Narrows, Edna Vaught of Narrows, and Ann Pfieffer of Stephen City; one brother, William Albert Wright of Narrows; and 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Hazel Ruth Tate Crigger

Hazel Ruth Tate Crigger, 69, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at her residence.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. in the New Bethel Church cemetery with the Rev. Sonny Ayers officiating.

She was the widow of Roy E. Crigger.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Donald Wilson of Rural Retreat; one son, Terry Lee Crigger of Wytheville; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Spence and Martha Tate, both of Wytheville; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Margie Hale Crockett

Margie Hale Crockett, 89, of Cripple Creek, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 8:15 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Joe Carrico and the Rev. Owen Moore officiating. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. at the Crockett Family cemetery.

She was the widow of Robert Brown Crockett. She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late James Lucas and Betty Jane Lowe Hale.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Bill King; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Crockett; and a son-in-law, Tommy Underwood.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, J.D. Crockett of Richmond, Adrienne Underwood, Jim and Trish Crockett, all of Cripple Creek, Dane and Doug Suthers, Adair and Sonny King, all of Crockett, and Eileen Pack of Wytheville; her grandchildren and their spouses, Alan and Sheila Crockett of St. Stephens Church, Jill and Mark Moon of Lanexa, Leslie Crockett of Richmond, Sherry and Ron Pugh of Radford, Tony and Robin Underwood of Salem, Randy and Rita Crockett of Wytheville, Tiffany Crockett, Krystal Crockett and Jennifer Crockett, all of Cripple Creek, Darren Suthers of Vansant, Dana and Keith Bradberry of Wytheville, and Angie Pack of Wytheville; great-grandchildren, Tim Pugh of Radford, Dalton Crockett of Wytheville, Samantha Moon of Lanexa, Dwight Damron of St. Stephens Church, Ashley Bradberry and Christian Bradberry, both of Wytheville; a sister, Bertha Davis of Cripple Creek; and special friends, Katherine Lowe, Phyllis Rutherford and Teresa Groseclose.

Garland Seymour Dean

Garland Seymour Dean, 71, of Austinville, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with Tonny Johansen officiating. Inurnment will be in Toms River, New Jersey.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Oney S. and Della Mae Crowder Dean. He was a retired geological engineer with Raymond International Drilling Company and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Ella M. Dean of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie S. and Alice R. Dean of Toms River, N.J.; three grandchildren, Jessica Susan Dean, Stacey Lynn Cappella and Ronald S. Dean Jr.; one great-grandchild, Taylor Marie Dean; six sisters, Frances D. Cornetta of Lodi, N.J., June D. Fulford of Austinville, Maxine D. Tolbert of Waynesboro, Virginia D. McCleary of Baldwin Park, Calif., Amy D. Kalert of Granite City, Ill. and Alice D. Biller of Austinville; and three brothers, Daniel F. Dean of Austinville, H. Clay Dean of Max Meadows, and Charles C. Dean of Radford.

Daniel Prior Earnest Jr.

Daniel Prior Earnest Jr., 80, of Bastian, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. Lee McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill cemetery in Bland. American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct graveside military rites.

He was born in Boissevain, a son of the late Daniel P. and Bannie Wolfe Earnest. He served from April 16, 1941, until Sept. 25, 1945, in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II and in 1946, he helped organize the first and only V.F.W. Post in Bland County, Pulliam Porterfield Post No. 8010 where he was a life long member. He was a member of the Miller T. Burton American Legion Post No. 20 for 34 years and was a clerk in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Bastian. He was a retired Nationwide Insurance agent, the business manager of Dunn Motors for 20 years, treasurer of the Bland County Centennial Corp. in 1961, and a member of the Bastian Union Church where he served as an elder and member of the building committee.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Kathleen Meade; one brother, Carroll Earnest; and one grandson, Danny E. "D.J." Bradshaw.

Survivors include his wife, Zareda Shufflebarger Earnest of the home; two daughters, Linda E. Bradshaw of Wytheville, and Margaret E. "Maggie" Paynter of Lewis Center, Ohio; five grandchildren, Julie Bradshaw of Boone, N.C., Davey Bradshaw of Beaufort, S.C., Lisa Moore, Craig Paynter, and Robbie Paynter, all of Lewis Center, Ohio; five great-grandchildren, Chase Bradshaw, Hank Bradshaw, Hunter Bradshaw, John Ferguson, and Zareda Moore; three sisters, Wenona Sauerzoff of Eatontown, N.J., Joleen Weigand of Conover, N.C., and Judith Smith of Lutz, Fla.; seven brothers, Sanford Earnest and Bobby Earnest, both of Donalson, Ga., Arman Earnest of Land O Lakes, Fla., Delano Earnest of Bluff City, Tenn., Charles Earnest of Tazewell, Ray Earnest of Greensboro, N.C., and Dwight Earnest of Pottsville, Alaska.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church in Bastian.

Paul Robert Pauley

Paul Robert Pauley, 82, of Bland, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Edgemont Center in Wytheville.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Bland cemetery with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating.

He was born in Bland, a son of the late Harmon W. and Myrtle Hancock Pauley. He was a retired courier for the First Virginia Bank and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Belle Ramsey Pauley; and a daughter, Jerry Rae Pauley.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda P. and Steve Nelson, "Chee-Chee" Pauley, Kaveda P. and Bill Reynolds, and Billie and Roberts Sheets, all of Bland; three grandchildren, Brandon S. Sink of Bland, Tresila S. and Robby Lambert of Austinville, and Allison Dean Sheets of Bland; one special nephew, Timothy Dillow; four sisters and three brothers.
