Catherine Iola Steffey

Catherine Iola "Granny" Steffey, 78, of Bland, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Ron Hutzel officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill cemetery in Bastian.

She was born in Konnarock, a daughter of the late Garfield and Sarah Hoosier Pennington and was a member of the Church of God. She was active in the Senior Citizens and the 4-H apple peeling.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Lee Steffey; a son, James Marshal Steffey; a grandson; a sister, Ruth Bowles; and a brother, Oakley Pennington.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruby Steffey Scott of Bland; five sons, Frank Lee Steffey of Wise, Wilburn Eugene Steffey of Wise, Stanley Bruce Steffey of Coeburn, Curtis Leon Steffey of Rocky Gap, and Emmett Roger Steffey of St. Paul; a sister, Evelyn Bowles of Bastian; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one step-great-granddaughter.

Newberry Funeral Home in Bland was in charge of the arrangements.

Garland Sanders Stephens

Garland Sanders Stephens, 94, of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m. in the St. John's Lutheran cemetery.

He was a son of the late Steven and Mary Pritchard Stephens.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Morehead Stephens; and a daughter, Mary Frances Schupbach.

Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Veneziano of Bensenville, Ill.; one sister, Ethel Brown of Wytheville; one brother, Frank Stephens of Wytheville; five grandchildren, Larry Veneziano, Linda Turney, Terry Gordan, Rebecca Schupbach and Christine Schupbach; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 10 a.m. until service time.

The Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Walter William Wolf Jr.

Walter William Wolf Jr., 43, of Marion, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, from injuries received in a hunting accident in Bland County.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Don Mahan officiating. Private burial will follow at a later date in Wassum cemetery.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a former employee of Dairymen, Inc. of Bristol for 13 years. In 1988, he started his own business, Wolf Dairy Service of Marion.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Marshall Wolf of Marion; three daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Wolf, Kelly Leann Wolf, both of Bristol, Tenn., and Brittany Leigh Marshall of Marion; his parents, Walter and Virginia Wolf Sr. of St. Augustine, Fla.; one sister, Martha Wolf Tyson of Chicago, Ill.; and one brother, Richard Wolf of St. Augustine, Fla.

Seaver-Brown Funeral Service in Marion is in charge of the arrangements.

Naomi Porter Burress

Naomi Porter Burress, 64, of Richmond, formerly of Ivanhoe, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in the Manor Care Rehab. Center in Richmond.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel in Austinville with Jerry Burchett officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope cemetery, Carroll County.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Robert Crockett Porter and Betty Catherine Burchett Porter.

She is survived by one daughter, Karen Burress of Richmond; one son, Melvin Burress of Smithfield; five sisters, Dorothy P. Lyons of Ivanhoe, Lois P. Edwards of Pulaski, Evelyn P. Foster of Max Meadows, Loretta P. Stuart of Richmond, and Yvonne P. Taylor of Max Meadows; two brothers, Dolphis Porter of Amelia, and Marvin Porter of Ephrata, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the American Diabetes Association, Virginia Affiliate, 1290 Seminole Trail, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22901.

Linda Copenhaver Carpenter

Linda Copenhaver Carpenter, 57, of Wytheville, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment will follow in the Fleming cemetery in Cripple Creek.

She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mamie Hedrick Copenhaver.

Survivors include her husband, Loyd William "Bill" Carpenter Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Carpenter Colvin and Robert N. Colvin Jr. of Chester, S.C.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen T. Carpenter of Rural Retreat, and Terry W. Carpenter and Teresa L. Carpenter of Cripple Creek; three grandchildren, Sarah Jane Colvin, Kelsey Brianne Carpenter, and Andrew William Colvin; a step-granddaughter, Ashley Laree Cassell; her father, Alfred William Copenhaver of Wytheville; two brothers, James K. Copenhaver of Columbia, S.C., and Alfred W. Copenhaver Jr. of Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Mary O. Copenhaver; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Daphne C. Crosswell and Jack J. Crosswell; a nephew, Alfred W. Copenhaver III; a niece, Merrily A. Copenhaver; and a mother-in-law, Mary Margaret Carpenter of Cripple Creek.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home, or at the home at any time.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the St. Paul United Methodist Church or the Fleming cemetery Fund, c/o Daphne Crosswell, 1385 St. Peters Road, Cripple Creek, VA 24322.

Dorothy Dalton Collins

Dorothy Dalton Collins, 75, of Dublin, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at her home.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin with the Rev. Richard Patterson and the Rev. Frank Bauman officiating.

Born in Dublin on Nov. 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late James Sanders and Mamie Jones Dalton. She was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Bruce Collins; one son, Gary Wayne Collins of Floyd; one daughter, Tammie Annette Bryant of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three granddaughters; one grandson; and one special cousin, JoAnne Cleek of Radford.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 9:45 until 10:45 a.m. at the Seaver-Sanders & Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dublin United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 577, Dublin, VA 24084.

Lonnie Campbell Crockett Sr.

Lonnie Campbell Crockett Sr., 54, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at Carilion Cancer Center of Western Virginia.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at noon at the Bethel AME Methodist Church at Rocky Mount with the Rev. Reuben Boyd officiating. Interment will be in the Franklin Memorial Park.

He was born in Ivanhoe, a son of the late Lester and Irene Crockett.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Crockett of Rocky Mount; a son, Lonnie Campbell Crockett Jr. of Hawaii; a daughter and son-in-law, Tanya Lyn and Rodney Thorpe of Pottstown, Pa.; a sister, Faye Crockett Sturn of Wytheville; two brothers, Sterling Crockett of Wytheville, and Sgt. Major Leslie Scott Crockett of Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, N.C.; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Feb. 25, at one hour prior to the funeral services.

Albert Edward Dermott

Albert Edward Dermott, 63, of Claremont, N.C., died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. at the Newton Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Herman Hudson and the Rev. Donald Anderson. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m. at the West End cemetery, Wytheville, conducted by the Rev. James T. Burnette.

Born Nov. 15, 1935, in Minneapolis, Minn., he was a son of the late Albert Edward and Elizabeth Dermott. He worked for Daniel's Construction Company and attended Newton Church of God. He served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Freda B. Dermott of the home; a stepdaughter, Lynn Wyrick of Charlottesville; three sons, James Dermott of New York, John Dermott of New York, and Albert Dermott of California; a stepson, Chad Wyrick of Claremont, N.C.; two brothers, Mickie Dermott of New York, and Danny Dermott of New York; and two step-grandchildren.

Fred Ray Goodwin

Fred Ray Goodwin, 65, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, in Kegley Manor in Bastian.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Crigger officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Alvin Samuel and Bessie Caroline Smith Goodwin. He was the owner/operator of F.R. Goodwin Trucking.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Goodwin, Raymond Goodwin, and Richard Goodwin; and a sister, Ruth Wyrick.

Survivors include his wife, Norma J. Goodwin of the home; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Gladys Hall of Wytheville, Virgie and Robert Williams of Essex, Md., and Jean and Dean BeCraft of Wytheville; one brother, William "Bill" Goodwin of Max Meadows; and special friends, Junior Wilson and Juanita Jackson, both of Wytheville.

Betty Lou Hagy McGlothlin

Betty Lou Hagy McGlothlin, 73, of Wytheville, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 21, at 8:15 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Harrison officiating. Interment was Monday, Feb. 22, in the Clinch Valley Memorial cemetery, Richlands.

She was born in Tazewell, a daughter of the late John A. and Louise Mitchell Hagy. She was a member of the Petunia Christian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lilburn Dyer "Poly" McGlothlin of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, John G. and Ida "Buttons" McGlothlin of Bluefield; grandchildren, Heather and V.G. Altizer of Bluefield, and Sgt. Shawn L. McGlothlin of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; and one sister, Ann Conner of Columbus, Ohio.

Ruth Elizabeth Morehead

Ruth Elizabeth Morehead, 87, of Bland, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va.

Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Shiloh cemetery in Hollybrook with Pastor James H. Conley officiating.

She was born Nov. 16, 1911, at Mathias, W.Va., a daughter of the late William and Martha Bowers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Parker Morehead Sr.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Hobert and Dorothy Morehead of Kernersville, N.C., Bruce and Dawn Morehead of Dublin, Rodney and Betty Morehead of Bland, and Alton P. Jr. and Maxine Morehead of Bland; two sisters, Retta Sager of Mathias, W.Va., and Lottie Basye of Mathias, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Effie Frances Anderson

Effie Frances Anderson, 85, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Sonny Ayers and the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.

She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late George Washington and Laura Warf Webb and was a member of the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Anderson; four sisters, Millie Webb, Ruth Austin, Ora Navy and Charity Lawson; three brothers, Mathew Webb, Hurley Webb and Alec Webb.

Survivors include a sister, Edith Tolbert of Austinville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Poplar Camp Church of God of Prophecy.
