Ella Hurt Pierce, 84, of Laurel, Md., formerly of Wytheville, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in Laurel Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Earl Bradshaw officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.
She was a daughter of the late William and Lauria Dillow Hurt and was the widow of Virgil Dean Pierce. She was a member of the Lady of the Moose Lodge #1504 Laurel, Md.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia H. Pugh, Jean Louise Hurt, and Margaret Hurt; and two brothers, Paul Hurt and Bob Hurt.
Survivors include three sisters, Elizabeth H. Manuel and Henrietta H. Price, both of Wytheville, and Patricia Wilkinson of Laurel, Md.; two special nieces, Mariam Allison of Wytheville and Carol P. Atkins of Matthews, N.C.; four special nephews, William "Boo" Manuel of Nashville, Tenn., Gary Manuel of Waynesboro, David Wilkinson of Welcome, Md., and Steve Wilkinson of Hanover, Md.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dennis Leroy Reed, 64, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Stoots officiating. Interment will be in the the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Landon and Allie Cregger Reed; two sisters, Mildred Gardner and Thelma Hovencamp; and four brothers, Fillmore Reed, Dallas Reed, Fitzgerald Reed and Gene Reed.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Deedie and Steve Blankenship of Fries, and Dondeia and Matthew Belcher of Max Meadows; four sons, Dyrick Reed of Fries, David Reed of Galax, Damon Reed of Fries, and Dennis Allen Reed of Max Meadows; four sisters, Julia Nagy of Roanoke, Minnie Ale of Dover, Del., Alberta McAllister of Blacksburg, and Virginia Safewright of Wytheville; one brother, James Reed of Wytheville; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Raymond (Judy) Caviness of Wytheville; two foster children, Jesse Reed of Hillsville, and Maggie Bishop of Wytheville; special friends, Nellie Tadlock of Max Meadows, and Linda Davis of Fries; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Avis Elizabeth Cassell, 90, of Wytheville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment will be in the Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, Ceres.
She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Kent and Lake Erie Cooper Cassell.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Bertha Cassell Umberger.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Clara W. Whitt of Wytheville.

Virginia Lee Hurt Pugh, 82, of Wytheville, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

She was born in Wytheville, a daughter of the late William and Lauria Dillow Hurt and was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church. She was a retired employee of Alco Controls.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol P. Atkins of Matthews, N.C.; two granddaughters and spouses, Kimberly and Earl Bradshaw of Morven, N.C., and Kristi and Steve Ogle of Mooresville, N.C.; four sisters, Elizabeth Manuel and Henrietta Price, both of Wytheville, Ella Pierce and Patricia Wilkinson, both of Laurel, Md.; a niece, Mariam Allison of Wytheville; and four nephews, "Boo" Manuel of Nashville, Tenn., Gary Manuel of Waynesboro, David Wilkinson of Welcome, Md., and Steve Wilkinson of Hanover, Md.

Randal Lynn Richardson, 53, of Bland, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home in Bastian.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery.
He was a tire salesman for the ITCO Tire Company in Wytheville and had served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna L. Moore of Bland, and Kathryn Elizabeth Crouse of Rural Retreat; his mother, Elizabeth Puckett Richardson of Bastian; his father, Randal F. Richardson of Bland; two sisters, Donnadyne Kiser of Tazewell, and Wanda Jean Wynn of Marion; two brothers, Sammy Richardson of Tazewell, and Steve Richardson of Richmond; two grandchildren; and two stepdaughters, Donna Strock of Harrisonburg, and Angela Harden of Ceres.

James Kelly Taylor, 90, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel with Pastor Rodney Mason and the Rev. David Rowland officiating. Interment followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
Born March 9, 1908, in Wythe County, he was a son of the late John Stuart Taylor and Ida Lowe Taylor. He attended the First Assembly of God Church and was a retired security guard with the Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was employed by the cotton mill until it closed in 1957.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Mitchell Taylor of Lynchburg; two sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin H. and Queenie Taylor of Lynchburg, and Larry L. and Clara Taylor of Patrick Springs; one daughter, Sylvia Bullard; three stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Jewel S. and Glen Rowland, Betty Krantz, all of Spout Spring, and Norma Wade of Gladys; one brother, Lester Taylor of Fries; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Lester Crowder of Cripple Creek; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the First Assembly of God Building Fund.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Sam Sollengerger of Rural Retreat; two sons and daughter-in-law, Seth and Carol Alberts of Houston, Texas, and Joshua Alberts of Charlottesville; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Max Bendich of Bronx, N.Y.; and one brother, Sidney Matoren of Bronx, N.Y.

He was a son of the late Walter R. and Hattie Mulkey Funk. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Brewer; and a brother, Bob Funk.

She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late George and Jenny Thompson Ferguson and was a member of the Sharon Lutheran Church.

He was born in Smyth County, the son of the late William Eli and Sara Inas Scott Hedrick.

John A.G. Oewel
John A.G. "Jack" Oewel, 89, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at the home of his son, Charles G. Oewel of Belvedere, Calif.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard officiating. Burial will be in Pennsylvania.
He was born in Stuarts Draft, the son of the late Charles Gustaaf Oewel and Roberta Thorn Oewel. He was graduated from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and was a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania. In 1973 he retired from the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company where he was employed for 43 years as a control equipment engineer and later as a consulting electrical engineer. He then returned to his hometown of Wytheville. He was a member of several engineering societies, published a number of professional papers, was committee chairman of Cub Scout and Explorer Post 107 in Allentown and was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Jean Seitzinger Oewel; and two sisters, Mary Thorn Oewel and Jane Oewel Moore.
Survivors include a son, Charles G. Oewel of Belvedere, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Jon (Edna) Skinner of Birmingham, Mich.; three grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Harkins Sr. of Kingsport, Tenn.

Heinz August Schulz, 89, of Austinville, formerly of Berlin, Germany, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at his residence.
Services and burial will be private.
He was born in Germany and was a retired machinist. After retirement in 1974, he and his wife came to the United States and made their home in Austinville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrud Heyman; his parents; and a sister.
Survivors include a daughter, Karin Moretti of Nice, France; a son, Detlef Schulz of Berlin, Germany; two foster daughters and sons-in-law, Gerlinde and Porter Austin of Austinville, and Marlies and Freddy Zenny of Rome, Italy; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Schulz, Dominik Schulz, Julian Schulz, all of Berlin, Germany, Vera Moretti, Sandra Moretti, John Moretti, all of Nice, France, and Natalie Zenny of Rome, Italy; a great-grandson, Jean Fresia; and a cousin and spouse, Heinz and Erna of Edenburg, Germany.
