Alma R. Thompson, 73, of Rocky Gap, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Chapel in Bland. Interment will follow in the Hoge Chapel cemetery.
She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Paris and Nancy Ellen Lilley Thompson.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Lee; and four brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include two brothers, Shula Thompson of Bland, and Therman "Eugene" Thompson of Bastian; several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews

Thelma Elmira Porter Williams, 51, of Wytheville, Porters Crossroads Community, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in the Roanoke Memorial Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 14, at 2 p.m. at the Full Gospel Bible Mission with the Rev. Hal Lewis and the Rev. Eugene Crockett officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was a member of the Full Gospel Bible Mission.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Edna Shores Porter; and a grandmother, Thelma Maddison Louise Dawn Tabor.
Survivors include her husband, Meredith Hicks Williams of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Annette and Kenneth Tabor Jr. of Pulaski; a son, Curtis Allen Williams of Marion; four grandchildren, Nikeole Leigh Williams, Josiah Tanner Williams, Natasha Lynn Williams and Conner Anthony Tabor; her father, the Rev. Garland Porter of Route 3, Wytheville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nina and Burton Rose of Austinville, Judy Jones of Fries, and Dale and Floyd Davis of Wytheville; and a special friend, Angela Baker.

Robert "Bobby" McKinley Arnold Sr., 50, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bobby Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late C.W. and Edna Mae Arnold.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Wayne Arnold; and his mother-in-law, Eleanor Fay Stroupe.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Stroupe Arnold of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Ann Arnold of the home; a son, Robert "Bert" McKinley Arnold Jr. of the home; a granddaughter, Alicia Farron Arnold of the home; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy Wright of Wytheville, Jane and Duane Wall, Mandy and Junior Viars, all of Max Meadows, and Connie and Allen Puckett of Wytheville; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Susan Arnold of Wytheville; one half brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Emily Faye Monahan of Wytheville; his father-in-law, Roy Stroupe of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ella Arlene Brooks, 84, of Frankford, Del., died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in the Millsboro Nursing Home, Millsboro, Del.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at Hicks Home for Funerals, Elkton, Md., with the Rev. Donald E. Alford of Union United Methodist Church officiating.
She was born October 27, 1914, in Troutdale. She was a homemaker and had worked at RMR Corporation, Elkton, Md. She had attended Baptist Bible Church in Elkton, Md. and Comer's Creek Baptist Church in Troutdale.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Zee Brooks.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Whisman of Frankford, Del., and Vina Castle of Elkton, Md.; two sons, Charles Brooks of Perryville, Md., and Dale Brooks of Elkton, Md.; a brother, Charlie Wagner of Troutdale; two sisters, Ruth Combs of Elkton, Md., and Ruby Greene of Chilhowie; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Ruby Fuller Buchanan
Ruby Fuller Buchanan, 76, of Virginia Beach, died Monday, March 1, 1999.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 3, at 1 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with Dr. Jim Alexander officiating. Burial was in Rosewood Memorial Park.
She grew up in Wytheville and was retired as a computer programmer with the U.S. Navy after 18 years of service. She had also worked for the Norfolk County School System. She was a member of Wycliffe Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Virginia Beach Yacht Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. She received her bachelor's degree from the National Business College in Roanoke.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan "Buck" Winfield Buchanan.
Survivors include three sons, William L. Buchanan of Raleigh, N.C., Larry A. Buchanan of Natural Bridge, and Richard L. Buchanan of Virginia Beach; her mother-in-law, Addie A. Buchanan of Kingsport, Tenn.; two sisters, Sue Hottinger of Sun City Center, Fla., and Reta Jennings of Wytheville; a brother, Robert Fuller of Anderson, S.C.; three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Buchanan and Katherine Dinsmore Buchanan, both of Raleigh, N.C., and Jennifer Anne Buchanan of Seguin, Texas; and four sisters-in-law, Ruth Elliott of Kingsport, Tenn., Christine Crawford of Owensboro, Ky., Frances Hammonds of Noblesville, Ind., and Nell Banks of Bristol, Tenn.

Frank Craighill Denton, 77, of Lufkin, Texas, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, in Lufkin Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. at Dorcas Wills Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Leroy Brown officiating. Interment was in Glendale cemetery.
He was born April 7, 1921, in Cripple Creek. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a lifetime member of the American Legion and was involved with the Trinity Fair Association for many years. He had been self-employed since 1958 in Trinity, Texas, in the pest control business until his retirement. He later moved to Lufkin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba Jordan Denton, on April 30, 1991.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frank J. and Terry Denton of Lufkin, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith Ann and Larry McGill of Middleton, Tenn., and Lynda Jean and Don Langston of Lufkin, Texas; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and George Riggins of Pulaski, Lois Stanley of Wytheville, and Velma and Brinkley Cline of Rural Retreat; two brothers and a sister-in-law, William and Mozelle Six, and Jerry Six, all of Wytheville; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

James Leon Durham
James Leon Durham, 73, of Grandview, Mo., died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at his home.
Graveside services were held Friday, March 5, at 3 p.m. at Christian Home cemetery in Slocomb, Ala., with Kevin Presley officiating.
He was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Virginia and lived the early years of his life here. He had been a resident of Kansas City, Mo., since 1963. He was employed with General Motors for several years before his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Main Street Church of Christ in Grandview, Mo.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley Durham of Grandview, Mo.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Heidi and Dr. Kevin Hornsby of Slocomb, Ala., and Heather Durham of Hartford, Ala.; one granddaughter, Anna Hornsby of Slocomb, Ala.; his mother, Maie Durham of Ceres; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Juanita "Shorty" Rosenbaum Huddle, 77, of Axton, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and H.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville with the Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Burial Park.
She was born Nov. 29, 1921, in Wythe County. She attended the First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Robinson Rosenbaum and Anna Mae Sutliffe Rosenbaum; and two brothers, David Miller Rosenbaum, and Sidney Dale Rosenbaum.
Survivors include her husband, Otis D. Huddle of the residence; four brothers, Samuel Richard Rosenbaum, Damon O'dell Rosenbaum Sr., Billie Dean Rosenbaum, and Patrick Abraham Rosenbaum, all of Wytheville; and three sisters, Helen Irene Clippard of Martinsville, Dollie Lovella Williams, and Linda Mae Rosenbaum, both of Wytheville.

She was born in Wilder, Russell County, a daughter of the late Leonard and Ida Ball Skeens.

Ethel Mae Reed, 72, of Route 2, Bland, Wilderness Road near Rocky Gap, died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in the Princeton Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Burns Wornal Chapel of Memorial Funeral Directory in Princeton, W.Va., with the Rev. H. Richard Hall officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.
Born Sept. 2, 1926, at Princeton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Claude H. and Pearl Evans Bullins. She was a graduate of Princeton High School and was a member of the House of Praise Church, Mercer Street, Princeton, W.Va. For 18 years, she was the custodian at Whitethorn Elementary School in Bluefield, W.Va., for the Mercer County Board of Education.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Donnie Eugene Reed; a sister, Virginia Bullins; and a brother, Claude Bullins.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, John C. Reed of Bland; five sons and daughters-in-law, John C. Melvin E. Steele Sr., 57, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will follow in the West cemetery in Marion.
He worked at ABB Inc. in Bland.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Steele of Wytheville; two sons, Ryan Steele of Wytheville and Melvin Steele Jr. of Florida; two daughters, Stephanie and Kim, both of Washington; two sisters, Barbara Orrison of St. Augustine, Fla., and Dolores Dempsey of Marion; three brothers, Sam Steele and Richard Steele, both of Vero Beach, Fla., and Tom Steele of Marion; and four grandchildren.

Willis A. Woods Sr.
Retired circuit judge Willis A. Woods Sr., 75, of Wytheville, died Monday, March 8, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 10, at 4 p.m. at the St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #9.
He was born in Clifton Forge in 1923, a son of the late Harvey Drewy and Lyndia McCoy Woods. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church. He attended the Virginia Polytechnic Institute on a football scholarship in 1942. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the infantry from 1943 to 1946. Entering the army as a private, he left active duty with the rank of second lieutenant. After leaving the service, he entered Washington & Lee University on an athletic scholarship. Upon completing his undergraduate studies, he entered the W&L Law School. Prior to completing law school, he was recalled to the army in 1950 and served in Korea as a rifle company commander with the First Cavalry Division. He left the army as a first lieutenant in 1952 after service in the Korean War. His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart. Upon returning form Korea, he completed his law degree at W&L, graduating in 1953. That same year, he moved to Wytheville to practice law. He served as chairman of the Wythe County Democratic Committee and was a delegate to the 1972 National Democratic Convention in Miami, Fla. He served as circuit court judge of the 27th Judicial Circuit for 12 years and retired two years ago. He continued to serve as designated until his death.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Woods.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Johnson Woods of the home; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Willis Addison Woods Jr. of Arlington, Elliott Leigh and Gilda Woods of Edgewater, Md., and Harvey Johnson Woods of Wytheville; a granddaughter, Kasey Woods of Edgewater, Md.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Audrey Woods of Warms Springs, Tommy and Marilyn Woods of Clifton Forge, Harry Woods of Richmond and James and Eleanor Woods of Wilmington, N.C.
