David Jacob Horne
David Jacob "D.J." Horne, 91, of Rural Retreat, the Blue Springs community, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 11, 1:30 p.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Marion V.F.W. 4667. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Smyth County, the son of the late David Jacob Sr. and Jennie Hutton Horne. He was a graduate of Emory & Henry College and the University of South Dakota. He was an educator as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in Virginia schools for 25 years. He was a veteran of World War II, a life member of the V.F.W., the D.A.V., and a member of the Blue Springs United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Ann Corns; and a granddaughter, Cecilia Corns, both of Martinsville.
Survivors include his wife, Opal F. Horne; a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Keith Denney of Rural Retreat, the Blue Springs community; three granddaughters and spouses, Suzanne and Dennis Scott, Debbie and Mike Wilkerson, all of Rural Retreat, the Blue Springs community, and Kristie and Mark Myers of Marion; one grandson and spouse, David and Sandra Corns of Martinsville; seven great-grandchildren.
The family suggests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the Blue Springs cemetery Fund.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Alka Marie Cook "Cookie" May, 81, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 8, at 4 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church with Dr. Barry Losey officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.
She was born in Whitesburg, Ky., to the late Harlan and Barbara Ellen Wright Cook. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church. She also worked in both the Cancer and March of Dimes crusades. She was a member of the Wythe County Historical Society.
She was preceded in death by five brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph May Sr. of the home; a son, Ralph May Jr. of Richmond; two sisters, Inez Meloy of San Diego, Calif., and Vida Dean Justice of Pikeville, Ky.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Wytheville Baptist Church or the donor's preferred charity.

Earnest Leonard Morehead
Earnest Leonard "Tommy" Morehead, 84, of Wytheville, formerly of Bland and Pearisburg, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett, the Rev. Randy Morris and the Rev. Jim Britton officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 9.
He was born Aug. 12, 1914, the son of the late Emory and Vera Wagner Morehead. He was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and a retired linesman from Appalachian Electric Power/American Electric Power Company with 36 years service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the United States, Philippines and Japan as a corporal. He was a member of American Legion Post 9, V.F.W. Post 2719, and Holston Voiture 1088 (40 and 8).
He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nannie Burton Morehead; a sister and husband, Emma and Alfred Havens; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Caldwell.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jean M. Morehead of the home; a son, Gary L. Morehead of the home; a half-sister, Mary Lee Caldwell of Bland; a half-brother and spouse, David E. and Phyllis Morehead of Bland; in-laws, Ethel Morehead Dickens, Bob and Frances Crockett, J.R. and Carol Morehead, all of Wytheville, Alice M. Mustard, Mary Ellen Morehead, Frank and Virginia Morehead, Gilbert G. and Ola Morehead, Paul and Nancy Morehead, all of Bland, and Jim and Opal Strouse of Fairfax; and many nieces and nephews.

Gertrude Hoback Rosenbaum Sargent, 98, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. in the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by the Rev. J.C. McPeak. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was the widow of Floyd W. Rosenbaum and Joseph E. Sargent and was the founder of Rosenbaum Chapel Church and cemetery.
She is survived by two special nieces, Betty Gordon of Wytheville, and Eva Vipperman of Rural Retreat; two special nephews, Keith Hoback of Centreville, and John Hoback of Manassas; two sisters, Emma Grace Hoback of Wytheville, and Ovella Boone of Salem; one stepdaughter, Dovie Mills of Roanoke; three stepsons, Henry Sargent of Virginia Beach, Joe Sargent of Roanoke, and Lloyd Sargent of Tazewell; caregivers, Grace Wright, and Vi Williams, both of Wytheville; and several other nieces and nephews.

Rosa Lee Fisher, 80, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at the home of her son, James C. Fisher in Brinklow, Md.
She was the widow of K.R. Fisher.

Ella Frances Shinault Gregory, 78, of Winston-Salem, N.C., formerly of Wythe County, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in the Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Early and Sybil Campbell Shinault.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Brooks Gregory; and three sisters, Fannie Mae Shinault, Beulah Barton, and Virginia Byrd.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Frances and Donald Beaman, Patricia and Carl Sapp, Trenda and Ray Williams, and Tammy Gregory, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin B. Harold Bascom Jones
Harold Bascom Jones, 85, of Harrisonburg, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Dr. William A. Slater officiating. Entombment followed in Rose Lawn cemetery in Marion.
He was born Oct. 20, 1912, in Marion to the late Lundy Olivia Hutton and Fred Jones. He was married
to the late Eva Sheffield Jones. He was a member of West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg. He was a 1963 graduate of Longwood College, Farmville, receiving his B.S. in education, after having taught in numerous Virginia Schools. He spent 42 years as a high school teacher and coach, retiring from Harrisonburg High School in 1976. Prior to coming to Harrisonburg, he taught and coached at the following high schools: Sugar Grove in Smyth County, Fries and Independence in Grayson County; Randolph Henry in Charlotte County; and Fort Chiswell in Wythe County. He was also an artist and wood carver.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Jones Furniss Martin of Richmond.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Ronald T. Ward of Charleston, S.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Harold B. Jr. and Grace D. Jones of Woodbridge; four grandchildren, Tina Michelle Ward Barham of Roanoke, Cynthia Adeir Ward Brewer of Summerville, S.C., Ronald T. Ward Jr. of Summerville, S.C., and Sherwin Vincent Jones of Harrisonburg; six great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Nannie Jones Burrill of Brunswick, Maine, Imogene Jones Miller of Southern Pines, N.C., Ruby Jones Sutphin of Crossville, Tenn., and Velma Jones McAbee of Harriman, Tenn.

Joan Remhoff Mohr, 57, of Galax, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, in the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Woodlawn with the Rev. Bruce Dwyer officiating. Interment will follow in Monta Vista Memory Gardens in Galax.
She was born in Hackensack, N.J., a daughter of the late John and Theodora Karpovich Remhoff and was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Toms River, N.J.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen P. Mohr of the home; two daughters, Pamela Kay Mohr, and Rhonda Lynn Mohr, both of Galax; one son, Steven Louis Mohr of Wytheville; five grandchildren, Katlynn Mohr, Gregory Mohr, Austin Rambo, Carrie Mohr, and Jamie Mohr; four sisters, Cathy Devine, Alice Dean, Laurie Remhoff, and Charlotte Eck, all of New Jersey; and two brothers, Richard Remhoff, and John Remhoff, both of New Jersey.

Julian Bascom Dunn
Julian Bascom Dunn, 73, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at the Veterans Administration Center in Salem.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville with Pastor Steven Ridenhour officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #9.
He was a native of Bland and a son of the late James Thomas Dunn Sr. and Annie Kegley Dunn. He served in the armed forces during World War II seeing action on the European front. He was a retired educator having received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of William & Mary. He was a teacher, principal, director of personnel and director of instruction for the Williamsburg/James City School System. He taught in the lab school at Eastern Michigan University as well as graduate extension courses for the College of William & Mary. On retirement he was a volunteer at the Wythe County Public Library. He was a past member of the Williamsburg and Wytheville Lions Clubs. At the time of his death he was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wytheville, Sigma Nu Fraternity and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.T. Dunn Jr. of Bland, and Paul S. Dunn of Abingdon.
Survivors include his wife, Joan W. Dunn of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, James W. and Lori D. Dunn of Ashburn; a daughter, Sherry D. Walters of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Adam Ray Walters, Carrie Nicole Walters, and Paul Russell Walters, all of Wytheville; two sisters, Elizabeth "Libby" D. Bird of Bland, and Elsie K. Dunn of Charlottesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Wythe County Public Library, 300 E. Monroe Street, Wytheville, VA 24382.
A light meal will be provided for family and out-of-town friends prior to the service at the church social hall on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

Lafayette Gunter, 93, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 12, at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home, Bland, with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.
He was born March 26, 1905, in Pulaski. He was retired from Virginia Foods, Falls Mills. He lived for many years in Rocky Gap and most recently was a resident of the Kegley Manor Nursing Center. He was a son of the late David and Minnie Gunter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Oma Muncy Gunter; two daughters, Alma Havens and Bernice Nunn; and three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Walter "Buck" and Alice Gunter of Narrows; one sister, Louise Turner of Pulaski; one brother, Roy Gunter of Pulaski; two sons-in-law, Charles Havens and James Nunn, both of Rocky Gap; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Gunter; one daughter, Edna Maxine Gunter; and a son, Bobby Odell Gunter.

She was born in Wilder, Russell County, a daughter of the late Leonard and Ada Ball Skeens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Mabe.
