Frank Willis Sult, 55, of Collinsville, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, April 5, 1999.
Funeral services were held Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins and Hosey Blankenship officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
He was plant manager for Ashmore Sportswear in Collinsville.
He was preceded in death by his father, French Fox Sult.
Survivors include his wife, Janet S. Sult of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina S. and Steve King, of Rural Retreat; one son, Anthony F. Sult of Rural Retreat; his mother, Alberta H. Sult of Rural Retreat; two sisters and brother-in-law, Frances S. and Bruce Fielder, and Janet S. Heldreth, all of Rural Retreat; one brother, Randall F. Sult of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one grandson, Andrew French Sult; one stepgrandson, Stevie Nugent; and several nieces and nephews.
The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Fire Department.

Gertrude Irene Yates, 84, of Bland, died Monday, April 12, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 14, at 8:30 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel, Wytheville.
She is survived by five daughters, Audrey Meyers and Wilma Brock, both of Troy, Ohio, Jean Blair and Judy Yates, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Linda Boardwine of Bland; three sons, Stephen Yates of Sidney, Ohio, Ed Yates of West Palm Beach, Fla., and David Yates of Savannah, Ga.; one sister, Shirley Wesco of Troy, Ohio; one brother, Elwood Metz of Tip City, Ohio; 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Charles W. Bridges, 77, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Friday, April 2, 1999.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 5, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Interment was in the Mountain View United Methodist Church cemetery.
He was a retired truck driver and farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille C. Robinson Bridges of Wytheville; one daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Billy Evans of Sparta, N.C.; two stepsons and one stepdaughter-in-law, Burton and Lola Robinson, and Billy Robinson, all of Wytheville; two stepdaughters-in-law and their husbands, Pat and Jerry Brant, and Judy and Timmy Whalen, all of Wytheville; and five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and eight stepgrandchildren.

Katherine Paige Copenhaver, 87, of Crockett, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Kings Grove cemetery.
She was born in Crockett, a daughter of the late David Jackson and Lavie Porter Copenhaver. She was a member of the Kings Grove United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Blanche Copenhaver Blackard; and one brother, David King Copenhaver.
Survivors include one nephew, Emory E. Blackard of Jacksonville, Fla.; special cousins, the Clyde Copenhaver family; a special friend, Mabel Flanagan of Crockett; and several other cousins.

James Thomas "Joby" Flanagan, 65, of Route 1, Austinville, the Coulson Church Road, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Joe McGrady and Elder Jim Stamper officiating. Interment followed in the Beasley cemetery. Grover King Post #1115, V.F.W. conducted graveside military rites.
He was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church, was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and a member of Grover King Post #1115, V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by a half-sister, Barbara Louise Blevins.
Survivors include his wife, Mary B. Flanagan of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Edward Wardwell of Hillsville; three grandchildren, Stephanie Jean Wardwell, James E. Wardwell, and J. Mary Elizabeth Hounshell Muncy
Mary Elizabeth Hounshell Muncy, 80, of Bland, died Thursday, April 8, 1999, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Leyburn-Presbyterian Church in Bland with the Rev. June Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery.
She was born Feb. 8, 1911, at Black Lick, Rural Retreat, in Wythe County. She was the daughter of the late J. Harlow Hounshell and Effie E. Hounshell. She was a life long member of Marvin United Methodist Church of Black Lick, Wythe County. She was a member of the WOC of the Leyburn-Presbyterian Church in Bland, serving as its president for many years. She graduated from Rural Retreat High School; Radford Teachers College with a B.S. degree; and attended William & Mary College at Williamsburg for some special summer sessions. She taught school for 35 years, serving 31 years as seventh grade teacher and principal of Bastian Elementary School, Bastian, Bland County. She was a member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and Inter-National Teacher Organization. She was a member of the Bland County Retired Teacher's Organization.
She was preceded in death in 1952, by her husband, Charles Peery Muncy Jr.; and a son, Joseph "Joe Boy" Hounshell.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles Peery III and Margaret Muncy of Christiansburg; a grandson, Charles P. "Chuck" Muncy IV of Christiansburg; two granddaughters, Elizabeth R. Muncy, and Annette Muncy Sherrill and her husband Robert all of Richmond; a step-granddaughter, Karen McCann of Christiansburg; two step-great-granddaughters, Morgan Sherrill and Lauren Sherrill of Richmond; a step-great-grandson, Christopher McCann of U.S. Army in Korea; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Mozelle Hounshell of Rural Retreat; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Kelly David "K.D." Sexton, 57, of Wytheville, died Friday, April 9, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with Pastor Joe Shumate and the Rev. Dennis Milligan officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
He was the son of the late Kelly L. and Florence Counts Sexton and was a member of the West End United Methodist Church. He organized and was a member of the Bluegrass Glade Junction Band. He was a retired Virginia State Police officer.
He is survived by his wife, Karen C. Sexton of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melissa and Joe Bartlett of Grimesland, N.C., and Kerissa Sexton of Dublin; two stepsons, Aaron Hall of Tacoma, Wash., and Evan Hall of South Boston; two grandchildren, Tyler Tuck, and Jennifer Tuck, both of Grimesland, N.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Ramona and J.R. Calloway of Meadowview; two brothers, T.J. Sexton of Fairfax, and Jim Sexton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was born in Bland County, a son of the late James Bishop and Luella Lambert Akers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had retired from the Bluefield Sash and Door Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelsene Marie Akers; a brother, Columbus Lee Akers; and two sisters, Lena Mae Lambert and Virgie Puckett.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late James Asbury Archer and Cynthia Lenora Belle Harrell Archer. He was a member of the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a self-employed contractor.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maria Gertrude Archer; and a daughter, Patty Christine Archer.

He was born in Pamlico, N.C., a son of the late Edward James and Georgia Hamilton Bowen. He was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church, past president of the Wytheville Rotary Club and a former member of the Wytheville Golf Club. He was a retired manager of Pet Dairy Products Co. and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nedra Looney Bowen; a son, Army Chief Warrant Officer 4, Robert A. Bowen; and a brother, Earl Bowen.
Survivors include one son, Edward L. Bowen of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one daughter-in-law, Jo Ann Seagle Bowen of Roanoke; two grandchildren, LaAnn Kristen Bowen of Williamsburg, and Kathryn Briean Bowen of Roanoke; and one nephew, Donald Bowen of Norfolk.
