Janey L. Horne, 67, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at the home of her son in Pawleys Island, S.C.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. at the Blue Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Perkins and the Rev. Hallett G. Hullinger officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Youngstown, Ohio, the daughter of the late William Adams and Dollie Sage Sines.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. "Jimmy" Horne.
Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Lynn Horne of Mt. Airy, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn P. and Diane Horne of Charlotte, N.C., and Gary L. and Lynne Horne of Pawleys Island, S.C.; one granddaughter, Rebecca Christine Horne; one brother, James K. Sines of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 5, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Dixie Faye Tolbert Jerrell, 76, of Chilhowie, formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
She is survived by five grandchildren, Rosa Thomas of Chilhowie, Diane Lyman of Piney Flats, Tenn., Becky Belcher of Bristol, Tenn., Joseph McClanahan of Glade Spring, and Kathy Neece of Abingdon; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Georgia Michaels of Chilhowie; and several nieces and nephews.

Elva Mae "Bobbie" Marsh McAllister, 66, of Salem, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, in the Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Interment will be in the Berea Christian Church cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late William T. and Venolia Catron Marsh.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph L. McAllister of Salem; a son and friends, Danny Joe McAllister, Sylvia Angel and Jennifer Angel, all of Salem; and a sister and brother-in-law, Rita M. and David "Peanut" Richardson of Wytheville.

Joe Lee Ramsey
Joe Lee Ramsey, 71, of Bland, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
He was born Nov. 4, 1927, at Yards, a son of the late Isom Henderson and Flora Shumate Ramsey. He was a bulk mail postal supervisor for 30 years and was a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Ramsey of Roanoke, and Gilbert Ramsey of California.
Survivors include a daughter, Carole E. Ramsey of Bland; four sisters, Evelyn Myles of Bluefield, W.Va., Florena Arrington of Cleveland, Ohio, Anna Falls of Charleston, S.C., and Kathleen Wilson of Roanoke; three brothers, Jess Ramsey of Pocahontas, Dennis Ramsey of Lynville, and Jack Ramsey of San Francisco, Calif.; one grandson, Justin Ramsey of Bland; one great-grandson, Jacob Ramsey of Jackson, Ga.; a nephew, Dennis S. Ramsey of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two cousins, Tony Leonard of Salem, and Robert Leonard of Mission Viejo, Calif.; several other nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Helen Odham.

William Michael "Bill" Stamper, 29, of Damascus, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7, at 11 a.m. at Green Cove Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Jody Blevins and the Rev. David Critcher officiating. Interment will be in Byars cemetery.
He was a member of High Point Baptist Church, a graduate of Holston High School and Virginia Highlands Community College. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was affiliated with Stampers Furniture in Damascus.
He is survived by his wife, Julie Baldwin Stamper of P.O. Box 207, Damascus, VA 24236; his parents, William Fealoues and Kay Taylor Stamper of Whitetop, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jaye and Joan Baldwin of Whitetop; a brother-in-law, J. Bryan Baldwin of Springfield; his grandmother, Effie Taylor of Whitetop; stepgrandmothers, Orphie Stamper and Mozelle Davis; and a stepgrandfather, Cecil McAllister.

Calvin D. "Buster" Waller, 58, of Washington, Pa., formerly of Wythe County, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe with the Rev. Joe Manis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
He was born July 14, 1940, in Wythe County, a son of the late Henry Michael and Doshie Vienna Taylor Waller. He was a graduate of Fries High School and was an HVAC technician and a U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Waller; three sons, David Waller, John Waller and Joe Waller, all of Charleston, W.Va.; two daughters, Alene Johnson of Susanville, Calif., and Jenny Victoria Waller of the home; a stepdaughter, Gina Marie Matoushek of Scranton, Pa.; a stepson, Gregori San Gregorio of Tallahassee, Fla.; two brothers, Mason Waller of Ivanhoe, and Kermit Waller of Draper; two sisters, Frances Nucholls of Virginia, and Marie Sayers of Welcome, N.C.; 21 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Perdita Farson Musser Williams, 85, of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Pittsylvania County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Lottie Smith Farson. She had lived most of her life in Rural Retreat and was the oldest living member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was a retired school teacher, author and local historian.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest C. Musser Jr.; her second husband, R.G. Williams; a brother, James Farson; a sister, Irma Reynolds; and a stepson, Ellis Williams.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Lottie and James F. Rigney of Danville, and Priscilla and William H. Hall of Bristol; one son and daughter-in-law, Ernest C. III and Lois Musser of Rural Retreat; six grandsons, James F. Rigney Jr., Ernest C. Musser IV, Temple S. Musser, Hunter D. Musser, Roderick A. Hall, and William E.L. Hall; five granddaughters, Perdita Diane R. Reynolds, Samantha H. Quesenberry, Tonya H. Bowyer, Cheyenne C. Musser, and Desiree D. Musser; 10 great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Marie Bailey of Crockett; six stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; a foster son, Don Widener of Rural Retreat; a close stepnephew, Robert Moore of Hopewell; two sisters, Mozelle Farthing of Danville, and Alpha Tucker of South Boston; a brother, Basil Farson of Java; and a sister-in-law, Nellie Farson of Danville.

Harold Vincent Frye
Harold Vincent Frye, 77, of Cripple Creek, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 1, at 11 a.m. at the Crockett's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Madison County, Neb., a son of the late Jasper Patterson Frye and Daisy Edith Grubb Frye. He was a member of the Crockett's Chapel United Methodist Church for 53 years and served as Sunday school superintendent for 23 years. He was retired from Washington Mills and Kiegel Textile. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 395th Infantry for 32 months. He served in Europe in three major campaigns and his last months overseas were spent in England. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Frye Bell; and two brothers, Bob Frye and "Gene" Frye.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen Wright Frye of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Dolores and Lowell Moore of Kernersville, N.C., and Ava Freeman of Fort Chiswell; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwight and Shirley Frye of Rural Retreat, and Travis and Sharon Frye of Athens, Ga.; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Joyce Frye and Martha Umberger, both of Wytheville, Fern Igo of Galax, and Muriel and Devoe Hagee of Salem; one brother and two sisters-in-law, James and Joyce Frye, and Louise Frye, all of Wytheville; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Donald W. "Dukie" Sluss, 53, of West Branch, Iowa, formerly of Bastian, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at the University Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa, after a long illness.
Graveside funeral services will be held Sunday, May, 2, at 2 p.m. at the Rose Hill cemetery, Bastian, with Don Chandler officiating.
He was born July 10, 1945, in Bastian, a son of the late Joe and Mary Bennett Sluss.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include two sisters, Normi Wolfe of Bland, and Connie Deel of Jacksonville, N.C.; and a very good friend, Harold Dean Woody of West Branch, Iowa.

James Stuart Vaught
James Stuart Vaught, 55, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Montgomery Regional Hospital.
Memorial services were held Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Schroeder officiating.
He was born in Rural Retreat on Nov. 26, 1943, to the late Greek Fox and Eleanor Stuart Waddell Vaught. He retired from the Wythe County School System on Dec. 1, 1998, where he was superintendent for eight years; band director, counselor and central office administrator for 30 years. He received his bachelor's degree in music from Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, and his master's degree in music education from Radford University. At his death he was affiliated with the Education Leadership Department of Virginia Tech. He was a member of the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Claire Cole Vaught of Blacksburg; one daughter, Laura Elizabeth Vaught of Rural Retreat; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Robin Cole and Willis Lacy of Alexandria; two stepsons and a stepdaughter-in-law, Scott and Jenny Cole of Pensacola, Fla., and Patrick Cole of Terrell, Texas; one grandson, Reagan Cole of Pensacola, Fla.

Walter Fred Crouse, 77, of St. Leonard, Md., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 23, at 11 a.m. at Rausch Funeral Home PA with the Rev. Charles Harrell officiating. Interment was in Waters Memorial cemetery, St. Leonard, Md.
He was born April 1, 1922, in Rural Retreat. He was a retired cattleman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ellie Crouse; a brother, George Crouse Jr.; and a sister, Bertie Smith.
Survivors include by his wife, Della Hale Crouse of the home; two daughters, Betty Bowen and Mary Ledford, both of Lusby, Md.; two brothers, James Crouse and Mike Crouse, both of Rural Retreat; and three sisters, Iva Gordon of Thurmond, N.C., Emma Parks of Rural Retreat and Margaret Lowe of Apollo Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Vernon Lamor Drummond
Vernon Lamor Drummond, 56, of the Mechanicsburg community in Bland County, died Friday, April 23, 1999, at the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 26, at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate, with the Rev. Earnest Chinault and Brother Dewey Conley officiating. Burial was in the Mechanicsburg cemetery, Mechanicsburg.
He was born Oct. 22, 1942, in Bland, a son of Ruth Drummond Wolfe of Bastian, and the late Eugene Drummond. He was an employee of the Bland Virginia Department of Transportation, was president and volunteer fireman with the Hollybrook-Mechanicsburg Fire Department and a volunteer for the Bland County Rescue Squad.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Carroll Drummond; two daughters, Any Rasnick of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Ashlee Drummond of the home; one brother, Charles "Andy" Drummond of Gaffney, S.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Donald Sines of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Brittanie Rasnick and Sara Jo Rasnick of Mt. Airy, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Louise Carroll of Bland; several stepsisters and stepbrothers; special friends, Bill and Nancy Pruitt; and many other relatives and friends.
