Edna Oliver Scott, 88, of Valley St., Wytheville, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998, in the Lewis Gale Hospital, Salem.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnett. Interment will be in the East End cemetery.
She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church and was a retired registered nurse. She was the widow of Walter Noel Scott.
She is survived by a son, Stanley O. Scott of Wytheville; one sister, Virginia McKnabb of Ogden, Utah; three brothers, Paul Oliver and John Oliver, both of Bluefield, W.Va., and Taz Oliver of Tucson, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Doris Monahan Stoneman, 54, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Taz Reid and the Rev. Larry Linkous officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late James Jewett and Ruth Copeland Monahan.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Monahan Alley; a brother, Coy Monahan; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Couch and Cebert Alley.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Mark Shockley of Ivanhoe; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Lynn Stoneman of Wytheville, and Richard and Pamela Stoneman of Speedwell; seven grandchildren, Shauna Stoneman, Ashley Cregger, Dusty Shockley, Travis Shockley, Shelly Shockley, Justin Stoneman and Cody Stoneman; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Beatrice and Everett Underwood of Ivanhoe, Mary Couch of Richmond, and Connie and Paul Wardlawn of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Betty Monahan of Ivanhoe; and several nieces and nephews.

Ollie Newby Goins, 81, of Bland, died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, in the St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 26, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment followed in the Bland cemetery.
She was born in Pulaski.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Goins.
Survivors include a sister, Willie Hinkley of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Cecile T. Fountain, 52, of Cassell Road, Wytheville, died Friday, June 26, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 29, at 2 p.m. at the First Assembly of God Church conducted by the Rev. Danny Moore, the Rev. Kenneth Taylor and the Rev. Abe Handy. Interment was in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.
She was employed by Wythe County Schools.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Billy Haywood, and Tammy and L.A. Tickle, all of Wytheville; one son, Jamie Via of Wytheville; her mother, Virginia Callahan Wells of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Amber King, Jake Hamm, Brittney Tickle and Larry Tickle, all of Wytheville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Hattie Elizabeth Umberger Jackson, 87, of Route 1, Austinville, the Bethany Community, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, in the Edgemont Health Care Center in Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald White, the Rev. David Jackson, and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Edward Bruce Sr. and Hattie Umberger. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church for 80 years where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the U.M.W.
She was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter; one sister, Anna Dean; and one brother, Edward Bruce Umberger Jr.
Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Herman L. "Red" Jackson Sr.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline "Jackie" and George "Tommy" Cregger of Austinville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herman Leonard "H.L." Jr. and Kathleen P. Jackson of Roanoke, and Gerald and Brenda Jackson of Knoxville, Tenn.; one granddaughter and spouse, Helen and Stacy Vaughan of Max Meadows; two grandsons and spouse, the Rev. David and Cindy Jackson of Philadelphia, Tenn., and Reid Jackson of Knoxville, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Kendra and Cory Vaughan; one sister and brothers-in-law, Lucy and James Walter Jackson, J. Fred Dean, all of Wytheville, and E.R. Jackson of Redlands, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Helen Alford of Austinville; and several nieces and nephews.

Josie Sproles Keesling, 88, of Wytheville, formerly of Sugar Grove, died Saturday, June 27, 1998, in Evansham Manor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at the Wharf Hill United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Ridge Lawn cemetery, Sugar Grove.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton Keesling; a daughter, Shirley Wagner; a granddaughter, Angie Keesling; and her parents, Dr. John Easterly Sproles, and Blanche Campbell Sproles.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy and Sonny Hedrick, and Linda Shrader, all of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard "Jack" and Betsy Keesling of Kingsport, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert Lue "Bob" Shupe, 58, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, June 30, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Graveside service will be held Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat with the Rev. Hubert Meadows officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Rural Retreat American Legion Post No. 229.
He was born in Rural Retreat, a son of the late James Lee and Ollie Mae Boothe Shupe. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a past employee of the Southern States Co-op in Wytheville and Rural Retreat.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Brian Shupe.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette K. Shupe; three daughters and son-in-law, Tammy and W.M. Cooper of Wytheville, Paula Diane Shupe of Rural Retreat, and Candi Shupe of the home; three sisters, Betty Wagner of Chapel Hill, N.C., Merita Powers of Ramseur, N.C., and Elizabeth Allard of Asheboro, N.C.; one brother, Paul Shupe of Asheboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Amber Cooper, Tessa Cooper, and Justin Shupe; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a daughter of the late Michael Elbert Stoots and the Mary Magdelene Winesette Stoots. She was a member of the Beulah United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Elizabeth Stoots; and a brother, Robert E. Stoots.

Henry Clayton Akers, 62, of Union, S.C., formerly of Wythe County, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, in the Wallace Thompson Hospital in Buffalo, S.C.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Tommy Barnes officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Christian Church cemetery.
He was born in Carroll County, a son of the late Arthur Sidney and Louie Semones Akers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maude Gallimore Akers; his second wife, Fern Sharpe Akers; a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvleen Elliott Akers of Statesville, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Wayne McHargue of Buffalo, S.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Barbara Gallimore, Franklin and Debbie Akers, all of Barren Springs, Timothy and Kathy Akers of Buffalo, S.C., and Billy and Shari Akers of Taylorsville, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Linda Waugh and Rebecca Tayse, both of Statesville, N.C.; one stepson, Wayne Campbell of Statesville, N.C.; six brothers, Claude Akers of Max Meadows, Jack Akers of Dublin, Robert Akers of Pulaski, James Akers and Douglas Akers, both of Max Meadows, and Daniel Akers of Pulaski; 12 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Hallie Liddle Goodson. She was a member of the Austinville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Bralley; a sister, Mozelle Pugh; and a nephew, Perry Burchett.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and R. Lynn Allen of Maryville, Tenn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bob L. and Elizabeth B. Charlie Z. Daugherty, 79, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Smith. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways and was a son of the late John E. and Elizabeth Walters Daugherty.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Crigger Daugherty; and a daughter, Linda D. Ayers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles D. "Dude" and Betty P. Daugherty of Rural Retreat; a sister, Nannie Daugherty Cline of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Mark A. Daugherty of Maryville, Tenn., and Michael T. Daugherty of Wytheville; two sisters-in-law, Sallie Daugherty and Della Daugherty, both of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

James Luther Hedrick
James Luther Hedrick, 76, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at his home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, at 1 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel. Interment followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Clarence G. and Nettie Spence Hedrick. He was a retired professional truck driver for more than 30 years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester G. Hedrick.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Alma Webb Hedrick; three sons, Sgt. Major Geary D. Hedrick (Retired), James Michael Hedrick and Bill Hedrick; five daughters, Janice Ailene Shifflett, Jennie Faye Snow, Helen L. St. Clair-Trail, Pamela J. Ramey, and YoLonda G. St. Clair; 20 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Joseph C. Hedrick, Charles W. Hedrick, and Paul Simmerman, all of Wytheville.
