Grover Woodrow Cline
Grover Woodrow Cline, 76, of Wytheville, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at the home of his daughter Judy Fletcher in Vansant.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rick Eminhizer. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.
He was a retired truck driver from Lemon Transport Company and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a son of the late Albert J. and Ida Betty Cline.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Yonce Cline; two brothers, Roy Cline and Conrad Cline; and a sister, Rachel Smith.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Fletcher of Vansant, and Donna Sue Hollingsworth of Burkburnette, Texas; one son, James "Jim" Cline of Midlothian; one sister, Beatrice "Bea" Lawson of Wytheville; and four granddaughters, one grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Laura Roselli Cole, 68, of Wytheville, died Friday, March 20, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was born in Lerose, Ky., a daughter of the late James and Rosa Couch Cole.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Novella McGuire, and Bertha Jaspering; and one brother, Walter Cole.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marsha and Luis Westfall of Max Meadows, Yawnie and David Burton of Campton, Ky., and Julietta "Jamie" Cole of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Thelma Cole of Campton, Ky.; one brother and sister-in-law, Burnice and Trula Mae Cole of Hamilton, Ohio; seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

William Robert Freeman
William Robert "Bill" Freeman, 81, of Austinville, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, in the Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25, at 2 p.m. at the Ft. Chiswell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Lindamood officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Charles and Lina Winesett Freeman. He was a member of Fort Chiswell United Methodist Church, retired from New Jersey Zinc Company as assistant director of Austinville Recreation Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Cox Freeman; two sisters, Roberta Crowder, and Betsy Lonaker Freeman; and two brothers, Sam Freeman and Edward Freeman.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph W. and Deborah Freeman of Max Meadows; one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Daniel R. Ashworth of Pasedena, Texas; one grandson and spouse, James Eric and Melissa Freeman of Wytheville; one great-grandson, William Gage Freeman of Elk Creek; two sisters, Mary Dorsey of Wytheville, and Margaret Freeman of Austinville; one brother, Raymond F. Freeman of Route 2, Max Meadows; and several nieces and nephews.

Viva Hayton Owens, 98, of Snow Camp, N.C., died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington, N.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 24, at 11 a.m., at the Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Liberty, N.C., with the Rev. Dan Quackenbush and the Rev. Howard Spray officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant Hill Christian Church cemetery, Liberty, N.C.
She was a native of Ceres, and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Burlington, N.C.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Anthony Jones, and Mary Lee Forbes; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

William Thomas "Billie" Frazier, 68, of Kent, Ohio, formerly of Max Meadows, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, in Akron, Ohio.
Memorial services will be Friday, Sept. 19, in Kent, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by two children and a brother, Bennie Frazier; his father, Walter T. Frazier.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Martin Frazier of Kent, Ohio; two daughters, Debbie Daughtery, and Jinny Moore; two sons, Thomas Frazier, and John Frazier; his mother, Ella Q. Frazier of Max Meadows; sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Carson Arnold of Max Meadows; six grandchildren, one stepchild, one step-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.
Sidney R. Richardson
Sidney R. Richardson, 75, of Salem, died Monday, Sept. 15, 1997, at his home.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist, Salem, with Rev. Thomas Joyce officiating.
Born in Wytheville, he was a retiree of the City of Salem. After his retirement, he worked for approximately 10 years for First United Methodist Church in Salem.
He is survived by his wife, Doris R. Richardson; a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Larry R. Richardson; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Rod Furr; grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey T. Furr, and Cydney R. Furr; step- grandchildren, Steve Reedy and Angie Pellant; great-grandchildren, Paul Furr, and Brandy Pellant; and three sisters, June Goodwin of Salem, Louise Price, and Helen Hunley of Wytheville.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 18, immediately after the memorial service at the church.

Raymond Leonard Shinault, 62, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. A.C. Ashford and the Rev. Bobby Joe Shinault officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Henry T. and Roxie Dalton Shinault. He was an employee of Wythe County.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert J. Shinault, Charles T. Shinault, Donald L. Shinault, and William A. "Bill" Shinault.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia A. Shinault of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Steve Groseclose, and Trudie and Wade Akers, all of Route 3, Wytheville; two grandchildren, Misty Dawn Groseclose, and Matthew Wade Akers; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. J. Fred Kyle, 80, formerly of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1996, in Columbia, Md.

J.W. Norris Jr., 71, of Fieldale, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996, in the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Norris Funeral Services Chapel in Martinsville with Rev. Larry House officiating. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
He was born July 2, 1925, in Fieldale, a son of the late Jesse White Norris Sr. and the late Clarissa Vastine Overcash Norris. He was retired from Fieldcrest Mills as an Industrial Engineer and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Fieldale United Methodist Church and a charter member of the church's Men's Club. He was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America; a member of the Fieldale Lions Club; and one of the founders, owners and employee of Norris Funeral Services.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Neff Norris of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Mike (Debbie Lynn) Farrington of Chatmoss, Mrs. Benton (Kathy Ann) Stone of Wake Forest, N.C., and Kimberly Jane Norris of Fieldale; two sons, "Jay" Norris III of Bassett, and David Neff Norris of Mountain Valley; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Leon (Sara Neff) Alligood of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Jerry Norris Stone, Jamie Lynn Farrington, Sara Britte Farrington, Lauren Ann Stone, Jayson Barrett Norris, Brandon Shane Norris, and Christian David Norris; a nephew, Kevin Neff Alligood of Hampton; one niece, Mrs. Kevin (Kristy Alligood) Fyfe of Hampton; and two daughters-in-law, Kimberly Hawkins Norris of Bassett, and Michelle B. Jerry Eldridge Tate Sr., 56, of Harrisburg, N.C., and Huntington, W.Va., formerly of Wythe county, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996, at his resident.
Graveside services and interment were held Friday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Foster Falls cemetery with the Father Rev. Brian Rafferty officiating.
He was a brick mason with the Kiser Masonry Inc. and had worked as a brick mason for 10 years in the Huntington, W.Va., area. He was a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Davis Tate; and a granddaughter, Emily Tate.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Reinhart Tate of the home; a daughter and her fiancé, Jo Ann Tate and Ronald A. Tornatore of Davidson, N.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry E. Verna Layne Umberger, 71, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1996, in a Roanoke Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She is survived by a son, Mark Umberger of Wytheville; a daughter, Sandra Bryant of Dublin; three sisters, Frances Walters, Ruth Umberger, and Mary Taylor, all of Wytheville; and two grandchildren.

James William Crigger
James William Crigger, 93, of Route 2, Wytheville, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at his residence after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Bob Parrish officiating. Interment will follow in the Crigger Family cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Wythe County Aug. 12, 1904, to the late James Gordon and Julia Callahan Crigger. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church where he served as deacon for many years.
He was preceded in death by six sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Ethel Cline Crigger of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, J.C. and Virgie J. Crigger of Max Meadows; a daughter and son-in-law, Daisy C. and Walter Clinton White of the Fort Chiswell Community; 10 grandchildren, Sue Hoback of Wytheville, Debbie Kincer of Max Meadows, Donna Dix of Rural Retreat, Jimmy Crigger, Chris Crigger, Jeff Crigger, all of Max Meadows, Janice Flora of Bridgewater, Joyce Hudson of Dublin, and Judy Lowe of Max Meadows; a very special grandson and granddaughter, Roger and Elva "Sissy" Crigger of Wytheville; and 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
