Richard Lee Bivens
Richard Lee Bivens, 50, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Wytheville Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Elder Bob Parrish and Elder Harry Sharley officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Bastian.
He worked for Professional Delivery Systems in Wytheville and was a member of the Wytheville Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris Jean Hill Bivens.
Survivors include his wife, Ramona Starr Umbarger Bivens of the home; three daughters, Ramona Leigh Eichelberger of Kernersville, N.C., Ashley Joy Bivens and Brittany Elizabeth Bivens, both of the home; his father, Harold C. Bivens of Bastian; one sister, Sandra Bivens Hoosier of Bastian; and one brother, Larry Curtis Bivens of Pulaski.
The family suggests those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad or the Wytheville Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Bascom Cassell Callahan
Bascom Cassell Callahan, 84, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, at Wythe County Community Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery. The Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 conducted a Masonic memorial service Monday, Aug. 4, at 8:30 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel.
He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Fielden N. and Mattie Cassell Callahan. He was a member of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 and I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 87. He was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church where he was Sunday school superintendent for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ruth Parsons Callahan of Wytheville; one son and daughter-in-law, B. Michael and Faye Callahan of Wytheville; three sisters, Elmyra Earhart of Vinton, Virgie Smith and Bertie Fisher, both of Wytheville; one brother, J.C. Callahan of Wytheville; two granddaughters, Lesa Huff of the Virgin Islands and Angela Alley of Wytheville; two grandsons and wife, Larry Henderson, Todd and Jamie Henderson of Wytheville; and six great-grandchildren, Lauran, Joshua, Trey and Megan Houseman, Zachary and Zeth Alley, all of Wytheville.
The family suggests those who prefer may make donations to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery Fund.

Annie Catron Corvin
Annie Marie Catron Corvin, 83, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Aug, 2, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment was in the Galilee Christian Church cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late David Perry and Pauline Blanchard Catron.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Herbert Corvin Sr.; a son, Pete Corvin; and a son-in-law, Rowdy Cregger.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Cregger; a son and two daughters-in-law, Jack and Babara Corvin, and Mae Corvin, all of Wytheville; one sister, Willie Mae White of Marion; three brothers, Gray Wright and Tommy Wright, both of Marion, and George Wright of Baltimore, Md.; and seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends at Birdmont Health Care Center.

Iva Arnold Dean, 90, of Austinville, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997, in the Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, N.C.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jake Thornhill officiating. Interment was in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Guy and Fanie Akers Arnold. She was a member of Hunter Hills Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Easter Dean.
Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita Lafollette of Mt. Airy, N.C., Glenna McCandless, Barbara and William Andrews, Mildred and Blandy Privette and Judy and David Fisher, all of Greensboro, N.C.; four sons and daughters-in-law, James and Bertha Dean, John Jr. and Connie Dean, Dewey and Ann Dean, all of Greensboro, N.C., and Thomas Paul and Gail Dean of Durham, N.C.; one brothter, Britton Arnold of Wytheville; and 28 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

William Jack Fleming
William Jack Fleming, 66, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Wednesday, July 31, 1997, at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mt. Airy, N.C., with the Rev. Binky Huff and Craig Allison officiating. The burial followed in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.
He was born Aug. 8, 1930, in Surry County to the late Joseph Dan and Connie Bland Fleming. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the National Guard. He was retired from WYVE radio station, where he served as chief engineer and radio announcer. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Edith Fleming; and two brothers, Doug Fleming and Bruce Fleming.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Felts Fleming of Max Meadows; two daughters and son-in-law, Connie Fleming and Terry Hall of Wytheville, and Michelle Renee Fleming of Wytheville; one son, William David Fleming of Roanoke; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne Woodrow and Evangeline Fleming of Roanoke.

Stella Lawson Jennings, 74, of Route 2, Max Meadows, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Glenwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Collins, the Rev. Bill Edmonds and the Rev. Edwin Doerr officiating. Interment was in the Lawson cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Samuel and Cosby Alexander Lawson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel W. "Teet" Jennings; and a grandson, Harold "Edd" Dalton.
Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda J. and Harold Dalton, Susan and Jimmie York, Wanda Fay Jennings and Wilma Mae Jennings, all of Barren Springs, and Barbara Jean and Darrell Blankenship of Max Meadows; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Ray and Lucy Jennings of Route 2, Max Meadows; one brother, Ernest William Lawson of Max Meadows; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Norman Paxson Sylvester, 71, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Libby Sylvester of Wytheville; four daughters, Norma Grab, Linda Thompson, Nancy Sylvester and Bonnie Rolon, all of West Chester, Pa.; two sons, Ronnie Sylvester and Greg Sylvester, both of West Chester, Pa.; one brother, William Sylvester of Florida; two sisters, Jane Carvel of West Chester, Pa. and Alice Black of Florida; and nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and six step-children.

Lula Eunice Morrison Yearout, 86, of Wytheville, died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 7, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D. Ray Humphries officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Paris Sylvester and Sara Della Combs Morrison. She was a member of the St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Earnest Yearout.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mabel and James Gullion of Atlanta, Ga., and Audrey and J.V. Monday of Max Meadows; one son and daughter-in-law, James Lee and Sheroll Yearout of Ashland, Ky.; one sister, Juanita M. Parks of Raleigh, N.C.; and nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Janie Ellen Cregar, 76, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1996, in a Wytheville hospital.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Sharon Lutheran cemetery, Ceres, with the Rev. Earnest Chinault and Rev. Bruce Shelton officiating.
She was born Feb. 24, 1920 in Ceres, a daughter of the late L.D. and Rose King McFarland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roby S. Cregar Sr.
Survivors include a son, Roby S. Cregar Jr. of Wytheville; three daughters, Rosebelle C. Vest, Carol C. Vest, both of Pearisburg, and Janie Eleanor Cregar of Wytheville; a step-daughter, Peggy J. Delk of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a sister, Anna Lois Hancock of Ceres; four special friends, Patty C. Lineberry, Patsy Ann Clemons, James E. Davis, and Eddie Blair.

W. Kyle Sage, 72, of Sante Fe, Texas, died Friday, Oct. 11, 1996, at his home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, Santa Fe, Texas, with Chaplain Hampton Mabry officiating. Interment followed at Galveston Memorial Park cemetery.
Born April 25, 1924, in Rural Retreat, he had been a resident of Santa Fe, Texas, for 11 years, previously of Texas City, Texas. He was a meat cutter for over 40 years, having worked at Wiengartens for 26 years in addition to other area stores. He was a member of the UFCW, the Texas City Masonic Lodge No. 1118 AF&AM and was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was preceded in death by a son, Terry Sage.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Sage of Santa Fe, Texas; a son, Randy Sage of Santa Fe, Texas; two daughters, Brenda Sage of Houston, Texas, and Bobbye Sage of League City, Texas; a brother, W.R. "Bill" Sage of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Cathrine Vaught of Dumfries, and Helen Crawford of Chesapeake City, Md.; a granddaughter, Treece Sage of Denham Springs, La.; a special friend, Kylene Carrillo; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe Walter Vaught, 58, of Bland, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 1996, at his residence.

He was a son of the late Greek Fox and Eleanor Waddell Vaught.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia H. Vaught of Bland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sally V. and Michael White of Wytheville, and Abby V. and Michael Spencer of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Samuel Vaught of Bland; a grandson, Steven R. Box of Gaithersburg, Md.; a brother, James S. Vaught of Rural Retreat; and two stepsons, Michael Holston of Rural Retreat, and Tony Holston of Wytheville.

Wilson Andrew Arnold Jr., 37, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Jimmy Black and Mrs. Black officiating. Interment will follow in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.
He was in training to be assistant manager at Sentry Food Mart.
He is survived by his mother, Edna Virginia Umberger of Wytheville; his father, Wilson Andrew Arnold Sr. of Wytheville; two sisters and brother-in-law, Lynn and David Akers of Wytheville, and Jenny Bishop of Rural Retreat; and a niece, Jennifer Bishop of Rural Retreat.
