Helen Vaught Rouse, 80, died Monday, July 27, 1998, at her son's home in Seven Mile Ford.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. at Middle Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Creasy officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at Blue Springs cemetery in Camp.
She was a member of the Middle Fork Baptist Church where she taught the adult ladies Sunday School for many years.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lee Vaught, and Charles B. Rouse; a stepson, Ernest Rouse; two sisters, Dollie Sines and Willie Mae Gordon; and one brother, Andrew Sage.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ellis and Sandi Rouse of Seven Mile Ford; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Ora Lee and Roy Snavely of Wytheville, and Edith and Charles Wymer of Marion; four stepsons and five daughters-in-law, Elmer and Marie Rouse, Freddy and Shelia Rouse, all of Seven Mile Ford, Robert and Irene Rouse of Marion, Leon and Nita Rouse of Atkins, and June Rouse of Marion; a special daughter-in-law, Bessie Rouse of Seven Mile Ford; two sisters, Leona "Tiny" Baumgardner of Camp, and Mollie Cox of Bland; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward Harvey "Edd" Sylvester, 62, of Wytheville, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
He was born in Pennsylvania, a son of the late Louis and Mabel Wiggins Sylvester.
He is survived by his wife, Irene A. Sylvester; a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and Gary Wilson of Chesapeake; a son and a daughter-in-law, Edward and Maria Sylvester of Gap, Pa.; three grandchildren, April Phelps, Kam Phelps and Erin Arth; a sister, Mabel Mooney of Honeybrook, Pa.; and four brothers, George Sylvester, Wilmer Sylvester, both of Westchester, Pa., Larry Sylvester of Rural Retreat, and Chester Sylvester of Maryland.

James Richard King, 62, of Narrows, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 24, at 1 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Wylie Hamilton officiating. Interment followed in the Nelson-King cemetery in Rocky Gap.
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late William and Hazel Lambert King.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nelson King of Route 2, Narrows; a daughter, Penny Bailey of Iaeger, W.Va.; two sons, John King of Bluefield, W.Va., and Calvin King of Route 2, Narrows; three sisters, Margaret Rice of Pembroke, Mary Smith and Betty Keith, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; and two brothers, Darrell King of Bluefield, W.Va. and Roger King of Princeton, W.Va.

Edna Faye Eaton Stroupe, 59, of Max Meadows, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Entombment will follow in the West End cemetery Mausoleum.
She was born in Corbin, Ky., a daughter of the late Arthur and Theda Walters Eaton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. "Bill" Stroupe; and one brother, Jack Eaton.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen Denise Stroupe of Max Meadows; a son, William Jack Stroupe of Max Meadows; four sisters, Margie Adkins of Corbin, Ky., Sue Reed of Glenmora, La., Ohler Mae Sturgill of Hidenite, N.C., and Barbara Miller of Maiden, N.C.; six brothers, Tom Eaton of Taylorsville, N.C., Dave Eaton of Newton, N.C., Wayne Eaton of Wilkesboro, N.C., Joe Eaton, Bruce Eaton and Arthur Eaton, all of Clairmont, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Brown Patrick Walters Davis, 73, of Pasadena, Texas, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, in the Houston Medical Center, Houston, Texas.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 17, at Grandview Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas, with the Rev. Stan Jordan of Bayshore Baptist Church officiating.
She was born in Rich Valley, a daughter of the late Marion and Georgia Patrick. Formerly of Wytheville, she was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Gunton Park. She had lived in Pasadena, Texas, for 34 years. She had worked for San Jacinto College in Pasadena before retiring.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Sue; and three brothers, John Patrick, George Patrick, and Marion Patrick Jr.
Survivors include five daughters, Virginia Moore, Stella Duncan, Martha Benoit, Eva Fought, and Barbara Hathaway, all of Pasadena, Texas; two sisters, Margaret Hammond of Rural Retreat, and Nancy Davis of Marion; one brother, Grady Patrick of Chilhowie; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Thelma Mitchell Peery Davis, 85, of North Tazewell, died Monday, July 13, 1998, at a Tazewell hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, Burke's Garden, with the Rev. Joe Shumate officiating. Burial followed at the Central cemetery.
Born Sept. 3, 1912, at Bluefield, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late James Taylor Mitchell and Eunice Mustard Mitchell. She was retired from Tazewell County Public Schools after 30 years of teaching in Bland, Burke's Garden and Tazewell areas. She was a member of the Central Lutheran Church, Burke's Garden.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Stephen Alfred Peery; and a sister, Sadie Mitchell Bane.
Survivors include her second husband, Jack Davis of Bluefield; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Harry and Linda Hypes Peery; a grandson, Stephen Seth Peery; a granddaughter, Joanna Lynn Peery of Burke's Garden; a nephew and his wife, Joseph and Kim Bane; great-nephews and great-niece, Andy Bane, Jacob Bane, and Shalyn Bane, all of Radford; three stepsons, Kirk Davis of Tazewell, Gene Davis of Broadway, and Glen Davis of Haymarket; a stepdaughter, Jane Crowgey of Wytheville; numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Ruth Wilson of Tazewell.

Herbert Wayne "Pappy" Nunn, 88, of Montvale, formerly of Bland, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Oakwood Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland. Interment will follow in the Nunn Family cemetery in Bland.
He was born in Bland, a son of the late Tommy and Louella Miller Nunn and was retired from the Chrysler Corp.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Ella Nunn.
Survivors include a son, Vernon W. Nunn Sr. of Moneta; a stepdaughter, Oletta N. Stump of Midlothian; a twin brother, Henry P. Nunn of Bland; a special friend, Danny W. Garrett of Montvale; 12 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

He was born Feb. 28, 1957.
He is survived by his parents, Rev. Albert W. and Mary Durrance of Wytheville; five brothers, Steven W. Durrance of Roanoke, Gary W. Durrance of Florida, Paul W. Durrance of Florida, Robert E. Durrance of Wytheville, and Michael A. Durrance of Wytheville; a grandmother, Louelle T. Durrance; a grandfather, Clarence G. Jennings; and several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Gwyn Olin Hayes
Gwyn Olin Hayes, 81, of Ivanhoe, formerly of North Wilkesboro, N.C., died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 13, at 8 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Private burial was held in Mountain Valley Baptist Church cemetery.
He was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Wilkes County to the Rev. J.E. "Ed" Hayes and Fannie Leah Jennings Hayes. He was a member of the Mountain Valley Baptist Church and was the former owner of the Cardinal Motel in Boone for several years and was a retired farmer and owner of Gwyn's Fish Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Kilby Hayes; one son, Garvey Hayes of Ivanhoe and Boone, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Willa) Rhoades of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two brothers, Wrenn Hayes, and Guy Hayes, both of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two sisters, Edna H. Hall of North Wilkesboro, and Hessie Adair of Elwood, Ind.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 15, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Carl Pauley. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was born in Welch, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Floyd Hurley.

Roy Clifford Stone, 67, of Pulaski, died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 13, at 11 a.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Wall and the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany cemetery.
He was born in Foster Falls, a son of the late Oscar Sutherland Stone and Rhonda Coble Stone. He attended the Original Church of God.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie Frances Stone of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and John Edwards, Rosa and Dale Hodge, and Cinda and James Isom, all of Pulaski; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rita Stone of Pulaski; five sisters, Ethel Shockley of Pulaski, Agnes Hicks of Dublin, Margie Snavely of Pulaski, Martha Hardy, and Mabel Peak, both of Dublin; two brothers, Fred Stone of Dublin, and Junior Stone of Austinville; and six grandchildren.
