LaVerne S. Pope
LaVerne S. Pope, 65, of Windsor, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville.
Born Aug. 24, 1933, she was a native of Wythe County and a daughter of the late B.C. and Helen Sayers. She was retired from the United States Post Office.
She is survived by her husband, William E. Pope of Windsor; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lidia Pope of Windsor; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dennis Drake of Newsoms; three granddaughters, Susan D. Fisher of Franklin; Mandy Drake of Gaithersburg, Md., and Kari Pope of Windsor; one brother, David Sayers of Pulaski; two sisters, Helen Martin and Dorothy Hasson, both of Draper; nine nephews, six nieces, and numerous grand- and great-grand nieces and nephews.

Cliffie Lee Farmer Viars
Cliffie Lee Farmer Viars, 63, of Max Meadows, died Monday, Nov. 2, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Max Meadows Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Don Crockett and the Rev. N.R. Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Clifton and Innis Saul Farmer and was a member of the East Piney Mission Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Farmer.
Survivors include her husband, Robert R. "Jim" Viars of the home; a daughter, Lisa Viars of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Timmy and Sandy Viars of Max Meadows, and Robert Jr. and Debbie Viars of Pulaski; five grandchildren and spouse, Lynwood and Kristie Armbrister, Jeff Viars, all of Max Meadows, Bradley Viars, Gary Viars, and Marsha Branscome Viars, all of Pulaski; two great-grandchildren, Meaghan Armbrister, and Misty Kidd; two sisters, Dorothy Felts of Wytheville, and Maxine Stoneman of Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Vicie Stevenson Stillwell
Vicie Stevenson Stillwell, 77, of Route 3, Pulaski, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, in the Highland Manor Nursing Home in Dublin.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at Draper Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilfred Overton officiating. Burial followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery, Wythe County.
She was born in Horsepen, W.Va., on March 8, 1920, and was a daughter of the late Anthony Thomas Stevenson and Marsie Brewster Stevenson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hampton Ballard Stillwell; by two sons, Jimmy Wayne Stillwell; and Hampton Malarry Stillwell; a granddaughter, Debbie Lynn Sayers; three brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include five children and spouses, Lucille and Clarence Cook of Pulaski, Joan Keith of Austinville, Pamela and Blaine Edwards of Pulaski, Mary Ann and Jeff Camper of Wytheville, and Kay and Eddie Edwards of Pulaski; four sisters, Edna Dickens of North Tazewell, Alice Smith, Annie Stevenson, both of Florida, and Helen Sheets of Abbs Valley; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mable Lucille Moore Arnold, 63, of Route 1, Ivanhoe, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Graveside services and interment will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Zion cemetery with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Dyer and Dorothy Arnold Moore.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Ron Savoie of Niceville, Fla., Deborah and Carl Davis of Wytheville, and Karen and Johnny Childress of Ivanhoe; four sons and daughters-in-law, Mack and Doris Arnold of Speedwell, Duane and Linda Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville, Richard and Donna Arnold of Ivanhoe, and Brian and Lorri Arnold of Austinville; a special friend, Billy Gene Gillispie of Route 1, Ivanhoe; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Charles Viars of Route 1, Max Meadows, and Linda and Bill Harrison of Charles City; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Donna Moore of Route 2, Max Meadows, Robert "R.B." Moore of Route 3, Wytheville, Darryle and Judy Moore of Georgia, and Donnie Moore of Route 2, Max Meadows; and 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mattie Black, 54, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Leonard Davis, the Rev. Thomas Braxton and the Rev. Levi Turner officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Charlie S. Black, and was a member of the NAACP.
She is survived by her mother, Janie A. Black of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy D. and Sheila Black of Wytheville; two grandchildren, Shanna Black and Logan Black of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Willie Blackwood of Wytheville; a brother, James W. Hale of Wytheville; four aunts, Maggie Brown, Ella Johnson and Elizabeth McMillian, all of Wytheville, and Helen Sessoms of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dagfin John Cederstrom, 88, of Wytheville, and formerly of Arizona, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, in a Radford nursing home.
Graveside memorial services will be announced at a later date.
He was a retired U.S. Government Ground Water Hydrologist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Katherine Cederstrom.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen C. Boyd of Draper; two sons, Richard A. Cederstrom of Baltimore, Md., and Terry K. Cederstrom of Alamogordo, N.M.; and two grandchildren, James W. Boyd II, and Katherine L. Boyd.

Iva Atwell Neel
Iva Atwell Neel, 81, of Route 1, Ceres, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, in Wytheville, as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, at the Newberry Funeral Home in Bland with the Rev. Bill Schoeneman and the Rev. Dean Tibbs officiating. Interment followed in the Red Oak cemetery in Ceres.
She was the widow of Henry Curtis Neel and a member of the Red Oak Union Church in Ceres.
She is survived by one son and fiancée, Charles Curtis Neel and Marilyn Sue Milburn, both of Charlestown, W.Va.; one granddaughter, Jennifer Kaye Neel of Leesburg; three sisters, Mary Jo Hunter of the home, Loma Tibbs of Ceres, and Verda Mae Tingle of Arlington; and one brother, Alvis Atwell of Ceres.

William Bruce Robertson
William Bruce Robertson, 78, of Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at the Wesley Care Center.
Memorial services will be held Monday, July 28, at 3 p.m. at the Hawthrone Lane United Methodist Church with the Rev. James M. Armstrong Jr. and the Rev. Robert Dodd officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn cemetery at Matthews, N.C.
He was born Jan. 14, 1919, a son of the late William and Nina Purcell Robertson, and was a member of Hawthrone Lane United Methodist Church, Joy Outlook Sunday school class and was a former member of Kilgo United Methodist Church where he taught the Wesleyan Bible Class. He was United Methodist Lay Minister and a member of the United Methodist Men. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry. He was a graduate of the Ft. Worth, Texas High School, a 1943 graduate of Kansas State University, a 1948 graduate of Oklahoma State with a master's degree, a 1949 graduate of VPI and a 1964 graduate of the University of Virginia with a master's degree from both. He taught agriculture and animal husbandry from 1947-1957 in Bland County and from 1957-1984 he taught chemistry at East Meck. High School in Charlotte, N.C. He also taught chemistry at UNCC, CPCC and Furman University. During college he played minor league baseball and rode on the rodeo circuit. From 1945-1947 he was a veterinarian on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Summers Robertson; and his oldest son, Scotty Robertson.
Survivors include two daughters, Jo Ellen Hill and Ruth R. Stilwell, both of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, James David Robertson of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Wallace Oliver Latham Robertson of Ft. Worth, Texas; nine grandchildren, Shanna Stilwell, Priscilla Tom, Elizabeth Canup, Kiki Robertson, Jimmy Robertson, Lauren Hill, Constance Hill, Robbie Roberston and Bryan Robertson; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, July 28, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Hawthrone United Methodist Church in Charlotte, N.C.

Dorothy Repass Umberger
Dorothy Repass Umberger, 68, of Route 1, Ceres, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, in Wytheville as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Red Oak Union Church with Pastor Joe Shumate, the Rev. Bill Shoeneman, and Suzi Schadle (minister in training and friend of family) officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was a member of the Red Oak Union Church and United Methodist Women in Ceres. She was a former postmaster and employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Ceres with a total of 26 years of service and a member of the NARFE. She was a member of the Bland County Planning Commission, and served on the Board of Directors of the Bland County Historical Society, a member on the Committee for the Festival of Leaves, and the Bland County Fair Association. She was an award winning and master quilter and one of the founding members of the Hands All Around Quilt Club. Her quilts have been displayed in Germany, Dollywood, and published in national quilt books.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Leslie Umberger.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Lynn Bowlin of Route 1, Atkins, and Lisa Umberger of Seattle, Wash.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Deborah Umberger of Route 1, Wytheville; one sister, Ola White of Sweetwater, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Cy, Ari, Staci, Valerie, and Evan.

Eugene Earl Billips, 82, of Route 2, Bland, died Monday, July 21, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 23, at 2 p.m. at the Byrnes Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Arnold Clark and the Rev. Frank Clifton officiating. Interment will follow in the Mechanicsburg cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 9.
He was born in Bland County, a son of the late William F. and Louvina Compton Billips.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth R. Billips of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and German Lizarralde of Purcellville, Lisby and Dave Hall of Chesterfield, and Debbie and Ronnie Faulkner of Bland; a son, Dale Billips of Bland; two sisters, Bertha Wiseman, and Ruby Yates, both of Falls Church; a brother and sister-in-law, Woodrow and Edna Billips of Nashville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, James Faulkner and Brandon Faulkner, both of Bland.

Imogene Dix Caldwell, 69, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Bluefield, W.Va., died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at the Fort Sanders-Sevierville Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late French and Cloetta Groseclose Dix of Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m. at the Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, Tenn. Burial was in the Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her two daughters, Sharon Caldwell and Karen Vance.
Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Caldwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Karla and Rick Starkey; five grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Russell and Pat Dix, and Bob and Ann Dix, all of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Eugene and Mary Blair Chrisley; two sisters, Martha French and Sylvia Chrisley; and a brother, Terry Chrisley.
Survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Vicki Chrisley, and Jerry and Sharon Chrisley, all of Max Meadows; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
