Pansy K. Meredith, 70, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 1997, in a Bristol hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memory Gardens.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. W.T. Meredith of Rural Retreat; three daughters, Onada Lowery of Port Allen, La., Sandra DeLaune of Baton Rouge, La., and Frances Whitt of Tazewell; two sons, Billy Meredith of South Williamson, Ky., and Aaron Vernon Meredith of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Gertrude Hyatt, Faye Hyatt, and Dessie Mae Hyatt, all of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Pat Hyatt, Kenneth Hyatt, and Buford Hyatt, all of Charlotte, N.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

Janette King Umberger
Janette King Umberger, 73, of Old Stage Road, Wytheville, died Thursday, Aug. 21, 1997, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home chapel conducted by Rev. Robert Smith and Rev. Ann Blair. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memory Gardens, Rural Retreat.
She was the owner and operator of Modern Beauty Salon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Burley C. and Georgia Crigger King; and two sisters, Margie Talbert and Lucille K. Kitts.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Umberger of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Tina U. and Danny Lee Fisher of Wytheville; a brother, William H. "Bud" King of Lexington, N.C.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Sue Alice Hughes Blair
Sue Alice Hughes Blair, 90, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Michael Wingard and the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment will follow in the East End cemetery.
She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late Edward Campbell Hughes and Alice McKee Hughes. She was a graduate of Radford Teacher's College and taught in the Wythe County school system for almost 50 years. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association and a member of the Wilderness Road Chapter of the D.A.R. She was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and a Presbyterian for more than 50 years. She was the last surviving member of her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis N. Blair; four sisters; and three brothers.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Alice McKee Blair and Dr. Robert G. Moore of Wytheville; two granddaughters and spouses, Ellen M. and John Bansemer of Laurel, Md., and Ann M. and Mark Morton of Lincolnton, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Katherine Ann Bansemer; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wytheville Presbyterian Church or the charity of choice.

Paul F. Buck, 85, of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, in the Wytheville Manor.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Edward Schaack officiating. Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Rural Retreat American Legion Post No. 229.
He was born in Rural Retreat, the son of the late William B. and Daisy Mae Catron Buck. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II and was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Kinder Buck.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Barry Guynn of Rural Retreat; one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Kathy B. Buck; two grandchildren, Bradley Guynn and Brian Guynn, both of Rural Retreat; an aunt, Ennis B. Kinder of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Lindsey Funeral Home in Rural Retreat.

Mildred Marie Chandler, 74, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. William Dale and the Rev. Penny Dale officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Mitchell cemetery.
She was born in Wise County, the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Ida E. Quarrels Smith. She was a member of the Original Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil S. Chandler.
Survivors include a special friend, Elizabeth Smith of Virginia Beach; and a host of other friends.

David Jackson Collins
David Jackson Collins, 89, of Ivanhoe, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 1997, in Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe with the Rev. Taz Reid officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery with IVA Lodge No. 173 IOOF conducting graveside rites.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Davey Crockett Collins and Laura Littreal Collins. He was retired from the National Carbide Company and was a member of the IVA Lodge No. 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Taylor Collins of Ivanhoe; a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Reggie Blair of Ivanhoe; two sons and daughter-in-law, J.D. and Anita Collins and Leon Collins, all of Ivanhoe; a sister, Virgie Wills of Florida; a special friend, Sondra Doss; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Herbert Wiley Cooley, 76, of Route 5, Galax, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, at his home.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 17, at Vaughan-Guynn Chapel in Galax with the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. Interment followed in the Coal Creek cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Grayson VFW Post No. 7726.
He was born in Grayson County on June 26, 1921, a son of the late John E. and Rose Higgins Cooley.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert Gray and Rhonda Cooley of Pulaski, Mike and Joy Cooley of Gastonia, N.C., and Doug and Kathy Cooley of Wytheville; two sisters, Ruth Combs, and Marie Cooley, both of Galax; and six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and special in-laws.

Trula Neel Lambert, 72, of Bland, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Red Oak Union Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Sidney and Ollie Crowe Neel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lewis Lambert; her step-mother, Hallie Tickle Neel; and a grandson, Michael Lambert.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and David Goins of Wytheville, and Debbie and Alfred French of Bland; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Diane Lambert of Bland; four grandchildren, Rachael and Derek French and Scott and Lee Goins; and a half sister, Dare Stuart of Ceres.

Timble E. Rash
Timble E. Rash, 91, of Wytheville and formerly of Ivanhoe, died Friday, Aug. 15, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Jack King. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
He was retired from the National Carbide Plant in Ivanhoe.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Kegley Rash; and a daughter, Ann Rash McLendon.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Stacey McLendon Craft of Greensboro, N.C., Ian S. McLendon, and Caitlin L. McLendon, both of Boulder, Colo.; three sisters, Flora Bell Jackson, Mrs. W.B. Sangster, both of Ivanhoe, and Cornelia R. Rice of Jesup, Ga.; one brother, Kannoy Rash of Ivanhoe; and several niece and nephews.

Don M. Pack
Dr. Don M. Pack, 68, of Chesapeake and formerly of Wythe County, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997 in Bluefield, W.Va.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Ira Tolliver officiating. Interment was in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem.
He was a graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va. and received his doctorate degree from the University of Virginia. He was the first principal of Fort Chiswell High School and served in that capacity for four years. He worked for Roanoke City Schools from 1965 to 1980, serving part of that time as superintendent of schools.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Angles Pack; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Sarah L. and William Boelte, Susan L. and John Weir, Molly A. Pack and Ibby A. Pack; six grandchildren; four brothers, Dan Pack, Wendell Pack, Harold Pack and Johnny Pack; and a sister, Betty Marie Stepp.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association, 3433 Brambleton, Ave. S.W., Suite 210B, Roanoke, VA 24018.

Virginia "Tiny" Manuel Pike, 61, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1997, in the Winston-Salem, N.C. Baptist Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Smith, the Rev. Ann Blair and the Rev. Mack Houston officiating. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late Frank and Virginia Lephew Manuel. She was preceded in death by a brother, David Manuel.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Pike of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Hampton Atkinson of Pulaski; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Barbara Manuel of Tobaccoville, N.C.; a special nephew, Tyler Rochelle; and several other nieces and nephews.
The family requests no food or flowers be brought to the home but suggests memorials be made to the West End United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Patsy King Sheffey, 51, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1997 at her residence.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the New Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Sage and the Rev. Robert Layell officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Wiley H. Jr. and Pearl Catherine Cox King.
Survivors include her husband, Dan M. Sheffey of Rural Retreat; one son, Danny Sheffey Jr. of Tazewell; one grandson, Chad Sheffey of Tazewell; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Elmo Grubb of Wytheville, Shirley and Walter Winebarger of Mechanicsville, and Edna and Richard Fowler of Marion; one brother and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Judy King, and Pat King, all of Rural Retreat.
