Francine Malek Jaccard

Francine Malek Jaccard, 70, of Blacksburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1997, at home.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church in Radford, with Father Jim Grealish officiating. A second service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Apostolics of New River Valley in Blacksburg with the Rev. Ronald Turner officiating.

Born in Bayonne, N.J., she graduated from Bayonne High School in 1944, and also graduated from Berkley Secretarial College in New York City. She worked as a legal secretary on Wall Street for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Jaccard of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas Jaccard of Barren Springs, Dennis and Cindi Jaccard of Wytheville, and Jeffrey and Donna Jaccard of Knoxville, Tenn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Dennie Clark of Blacksburg, Michele and Danny Coalson of Pulaski, and Elaine and Howard Hoyt of Radford; one sister, Lorraine Thompson of Westfield, Mass.; and 16 grandchildren, Andrew and Kellie Jaccard, Mandy, Chelsea, Joey, and Audrey Jaccard, Jed, Jason, Jonathan and Jordan Clark, Dane and Eric Coalson, Kandis, Matthew, Allison, and Samantha Hoyt.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Aug. 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church in Radford.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the New River Valley Hospice, 111 West Main St., Christiansburg, VA 24073; or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, VA 24003; or to the Alzheimer's National Headquarters, 70 East Lake St., Chicago, IL 60601.

Enola D. Shufflebarger

Enola D. Shufflebarger, 96, of Pulaski, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, in the Birdmont Manor Health Care Center in Wytheville.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 11 a.m. at the Stevens Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Donald Scott, the Rev. Clayton Tinnell, and Father J. Ven Ilano officiating. Burial will follow in the Thornspring cemetery, Pulaski County.

She was born Dec. 25, 1900 in Draper and was the daughter of the late Thomas Lloyd Dawson and Letitia Quesenberry Dawson. She was a graduate of Draper High School. After moving to Pulaski in 1918 she was employed by The Southwest Times where she worked until her marriage. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence David Shufflebarger; a son, Lyle David Shufflebarger; three brothers; and four sisters.

Survivors include a son, A. Dean Shufflebarger of Pulaski; a daughter-in-law, Jewell Black Shufflebarger of Pulaski; three granddaughters, Sherri L. Langelier of Pulaski, Kim Troupe of Pilot Point, Texas, and Mrs. Mike (Diane) Hunter of Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Crayola Collins, a resident at Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes that donations be made in memory of Enola Shufflebarger to the First Christian Church Building Fund, or to the charity of one's choice.

Annie Virginia Patton Slagle

Annie Virginia Patton Slagle, 82, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, (the Cedar Springs Community), died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Perkins and the Rev. Hubert Meadows officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was born in Grayson County, the daughter of the late William I. and Mattie Sue Funk Patton. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Cedar Springs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Glen Slagle; and a daughter, Myrtle Louise Slagle.

Survivors include one daughter, Frances Slagle of the home; two sisters-in-law, Edna Patton Smith of Independence and Charlotte Patton of Hillsville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Asbury United Methodist Church or to the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services.

Lucille Heldreth Snider

Lucille Heldreth Snider, 80, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry M. Bollinger officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.

She was born in Smyth County, the daughter of the late Dennis Wayne and Cora Belle Heldreth Meredith. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat.

She is survived by two sisters-in-law; several cousins; and a special friend, Gravelle Tarter of Rural Retreat.

Frances Bralley Stuart

Frances Bralley Stuart, 65, of Speedwell, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Speedwell Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Ford Stuart.

Survivors include five daughters, Thelma Gravely of Missouri, Yvonne Whitley of Jacksonville, Fla., Barbara King of Bland, Deborah Stuart of Speedwell, and Sherry Bowers of Cana; three sons, Michael O'Shea Stuart of Speedwell, Tony Stuart of Grahams Forge, and Michael O'Shea Stuart II of Bland; four brothers, Charles Bralley of Elkton, Md., Maurice Bralley of Wytheville, Thomas A. Bralley Jr. of Wytheville, and Reginald Waller of Wytheville; two sisters, Elizabeth Frye of Wytheville (the Piney Community), and Lorraine Ross of Charlotte, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Numa Helsabeck

Numa Helsabeck, 83, of Winchester, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at Omps Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Ewart Wyle Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Thornrose cemetery, Staunton. Committal services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m. at Thornrose cemetery. A Masonic memorial service will be conducted Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. by members of the Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 21 A.F.&A.M.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1913, in King and Queen County, a son of the late Edgar Numa and Ethel Reynolds Helsabeck. He retired from the Virginia State Police after 34 years of service, having been promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1947, 25 years of which were served in Wytheville. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Winchester, where he served as deacon officer emeritus and a member of the Men's Fellowship Group. He was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 21 A.F.&A.M., a 32nd degree mason of the Shenandoah Valley Scottish Rite, and a member of the Loyal Order of Shrine. He attended Randolph Macon College and was a graduate of the Virginia State Police Academy. He married Helen Hamilton on Nov. 16, 1940 in Staunton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hamilton Helsabeck, on July 9, 1995; an infant son; and three sisters.

Survivors include four sons, William B. Helsabeck of Cynthiana, Ky., Ronald W. Helsabeck of Johnson City, Tenn., Thomas R. Helsabeck of Altadena, Calif., and Timothy H. Helsabeck of Winchester; and one brother, Dr. Fred Helsabeck of Richmond.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Omps Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 75 Merriman's Lane, Winchester, VA 22601.

Grover Forest Houseman

Grover Forest Houseman, 73, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. in the New Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Layell, Rev. Gary Grogg and Dr. Tal Stanley. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

He was retired from Southwestern State Hospital and was a son of the late Alonzo F. and Dorcas Crockett Houseman. He was a member of the New Bethel United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Miller Houseman of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis Forest and Peggy Houseman, and Gary Michael and Rhonda Houseman, both of Wytheville; two sisters, Dorothy Eubank of Hickory, N.C., and Mary Kincer of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, A.E. "Blossom" Houseman of Wytheville; and grandchildren and spouse, Jennifer and Charlie Mlynski, Michael Houseman, and Brian Houseman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rural Retreat Rescue Squad, or to the New Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery fund.

Adele Price Miller

Adele Price Miller, 83, of Reservoir Street, Wytheville, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 1997, at her residence.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 2:30 p.m. in the Lawnview cemetery, Philadelphia, Pa.

She was a retired librarian from the City of Virginia Beach. She was the daughter of the late Phillip and Elizabeth Cunningham Price.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Miller.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Jim Lucas of Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, George Edward and Mary Miller of Montara, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jon E. Braithwaite, David T. Braithwaite, Mark E. Lucas, and Steven J. Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Kathleen Miller, Jon Miller, and Andrew Miller.

Otis Edwin Shannon

Otis Edwin Shannon, 75, of Wytheville, formerly of Ivanhoe, died Monday, Aug. 25, 1997, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m. at Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. R.J. Reynolds and the Rev. Rocky Dalton officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

He was born in Hamilton County, Tenn., a son of the late Warrner and Sarah Shadrick Shannon. He was a retired barber and a member of the Ivanhoe Church of God of Prophecy where he served as superintendent of Sunday school for 20 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Robie Shannon of the home; two sons and spouse, Ed Shannon of Wytheville, and George and Dorothea Shannon of Williamsburg; two granddaughters and spouse, Denise Shannon of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Diane and Brian Erbe of Blacksburg; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Agnes and Arnold Burden of Mt. Airy, N.C., Edith Elsea of Hazzard, Ky., and Edna Fritts of South Boston.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home.

Kathryn Carter Smith

Kathryn Carter Smith, 78, of Hampton, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 1997.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. John T. Ellington officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.

Born in Bland County, she had been a Hampton resident for 40 years. In Hampton she was a member of East Hampton Baptist Church and its prayer group.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lowren D. Smith; and her second husband, William H. Carter.

Survivors include four daughters, Sandra K. Kellen of York County, Dixie L. Flanagan of Hampton, Lana L. Nichols of Seaford, and Judy L. Batten of Hampton; a son, Ronnie L. Smith of Hampton; three sisters, Helen Pricer of Michigan, Hazel Bruce of Southwest Virginia, and Phyllis Repass of Wytheville; a brother, Neil Harner of Virginia; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family requests any memorial contributions to be made to the East Hampton Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 1954 Long Green Lane, Hampton, VA 23662.

Ella Vaughan

Ella "Gaye" Vaughan, 80, of Springfield, Ohio, died on Saturday, Aug. 9, 1997.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Jones-Kenney-Zechman Funeral Home, Springfield, Ohio, with the Rev. John Hearp officiating. Entombment was at the Rose Hill cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Vaughan; and a son, Robert H. Vaughan.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Jackie Vaughan, Samuel "Gene" and Gale Vaughan of Springfield, Ohio, and Catherine Ann Vaughan; five granddaughters and spouse, Janice Vaughan, Regina and Duane Campbell, Tina and Steve DeWine of Springfield, Ohio, Kim Downey, and Kelly Vaughan-Smith of Miami, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Brittanee Ann DeWine; two step-great-granddaughters, Molly Campbell and Kelly Campbell; a brother and sister-in-law, Clinton and Mary Lou Vaughan of Wilmington, Del.; uncles and aunts, Silas and Ina Noblett of Galax, and Rose Noblett of Spring Valley; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Groseclose Chapel cemetery Fund, Rt. 1, Speedwell, VA 24374.

Trula Neel Lambert

Trula Neel Lambert, 72, of Bland, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 1997, in the Kegley Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Red Oak Union Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was born in Bland County, a daughter of the late Sidney and Ollie Crowe Neel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Lewis Lambert; her step-mother, Hallie Tickle Neel; and a grandson, Michael Lambert.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and David Goins of Wytheville, and Debbie and Alfred French of Bland; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Diane Lambert of Bland; a sister, Shirley Repass of Wytheville; a brother, Garland Neel of Ceres; four grandchildren, Rachael and Derek French and Scot and Lee Goins; and a half-sister, Dare Stuart of Ceres.
