Georgia Frances Ratcliffe Worrell
Georgia Frances Ratcliffe Worrell, 70, of Route 1, Hiwassee, and formerly of Route 1, Draper, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, in the Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. Johnny Howlett officiating. Interment followed in the Memorial Christian Church cemetery, Draper.
Born March 16, 1927 in Max Meadows, she was a daughter of the late David Ratcliffe and Belle Pauley Ratcliffe. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Henry Worrell; a sister, Essie Coffey; and a brother, J.D. Ratcliffe.
Survivors include three sons, Kenny Sidney Blair of Hiwassee, Steven Burton Sutherland of Pulaski, and Bob Worrell of Goode; five grandchildren; three sisters, Rosetta Coffey of Wytheville, Louise Doss of Louisa, and Betty Jo Dunford of Wytheville; and one brother, Robert Ratcliffe of Pulaski.

Jesse D. Arnold
Jesse D. Arnold, 80, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Piney community, died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997, in a Pulaski hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Akers Arnold.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Gilmer Rickey of Wytheville, and Sherry and Rickey Ring of Wytheville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Allen Arnold of Wytheville, and Ronnie and Karen Arnold of Wytheville; six sisters, Elizabeth Harmon, Ida Arnold, Vivian Dunford, Josephine Aker, Elva Dunford, Betty Coley, all of Wytheville; one brother, Jack Arnold of Wytheville; three grandchildren, Rhonda Mabry, Lucas Arnold, and Laken Arnold; and two great-grandchildren, Cory Mabry and Brett Mabry.

Frances Ileen "Frankie" Delp, 73, of First Street S.W., Pulaski, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Radford with the Rev. John McCandlish officiating, assisted by the Rev. Steven Ridenhour and the Rev. Roger Crigger. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery, Wytheville.
She was born Sept. 21, 1923, in Speedwell, a daughter of the late Jottie M. and Lillian L. Pennington.
She is survived by a son, James C. "Jimmy" Lefler of Pulaski; a daughter and son-in-law, Carole Sue and Cordell Black of Dunkirk, Md.; a stepdaughter, Phyllis E. Van Doren of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a chosen son, Remy Nelson of the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa.; a brother, Carol B. "Penny" Pennington of Dade City, Fla.; three sisters, Kathleen Crigger of Rural Retreat, Adah Umberger of Wytheville, and Edith Bateman of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Andy Black of Arlington, and Timothy Black of Jessup, Md.; a step-granddaughter, Linda L. Barney of Clarkston, Mich.

David Larry Jones
David Larry Jones, 61, of Abingdon, formerly of Falls Mills, died on Monday, Sept. 8, 1997, at Bowman-Gray Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell, W.Va., with minister Tom Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield-Tazewell Road in Bluefield.
Born on May 25, 1936, in Landgraff, W.Va., he was a son of Elsie Taylor Jones of Falls Mills, and the late Graham A. Jones. He had been a resident of Abingdon for 26 years and was retired from Reynolds Metal Company. He was a member of the American Legion, attended the Falls Mills Christian Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his father, Graham A. Jones; and a brother, Jerry Jones.
Survivors include his mother, Elsie Taylor Jones of Falls Mills; his wife, Joyce Rash Jones of Abingdon; two daughters, Robin Collins of Bristol, Tenn., and Paula Lanter of Speedwell; three sisters, Pat Bailey of Dade City, Fla., Ann Brooks of Newport News, and Jan Lovell of Elliston; three brothers, Donald Jones of Jacksonville, N.C., Richard Jones of Falls Mills, and Michael Jones of Falls Mills; and five grandchildren.

Leona Parks Manuel, 65, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, in a Roanoke hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Roselawn cemetery in Marion at 1 p.m.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd E. Manuel.
Survivors include two daughters, Gina Manuel of Greensboro, N.C., and Traci Zalasky of Sacramento, Calif.; and two sisters, Dora Marion of Marion, and Ruby Gillespie of Chicago, Ill.

William Maiden Martin, 64, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
He was a retired truck driver for Consolidated Freightliner.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Cox Martin of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and James Jones of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Wendy Martin of Wytheville; two sisters, Jane Grubb and Ida Mae Frye, both of Wytheville; one brother, Charlie Martin of Wytheville; and one granddaughter, three step-grandchildren, a step-great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Daniel Jason Rooker V, 11, of Claytor Lake, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at his home.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, Sept. 7, at 6 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church in Radford with Father Jim Grealish officiating.
He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a former student at Bethel Elementary School.
He is survived by his parents, Greg and Fran Rooker of Claytor Lake; two sisters, Jennifer Rooker and Stephanie Rooker, both of Claytor Lake; paternal grandmother, Bette Rooker of Pulaski; maternal grandparents, Frank and Mary Vickers of Draper; a special friend, Sandy Hill of Fairlawn; aunts and uncles, Dennis and Ann Rooker, Dee and Buddy Lawton, Val and Randy Hostetler, and Shirley and Steve Conley; several cousins and great-aunts and uncles.

She was the widow of Joseph Dix.

Jean Louise Hurt of N. 18th St., Wytheville, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

She was retired from Alco Controls and was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.

Susan J. Stroupe, 77, of Rural Retreat, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 3 p.m. at the West End cemetery in Wytheville with the Rev. Steve Tilley officiating.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarke Walter Stroupe.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Jimmy A. Haga, Tammy L. Primm, both of Wytheville, and William M. Haga of Rural Retreat; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Hensley of Wytheville, and Mozelle Hensley of Speedwell; one brothers, Howard Howk of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles David Cox
Charles David Cox, 67, of Route 1, Bland, died on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Bastian Union Church with the Rev. David Wall, the Rev. Frank Clifton, and the Rev. E.C. Redman officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, W.Va.
He was born in Mercer County, Camp Creek, West Virginia, on Aug. 2, 1930. He was a son of Lamer R. Cox and the late Esther Moye Cox. He was an active member of the Bastian Union Church, serving as the present interim pastor, chairman of the board, elder, couples' Sunday school class teacher and sang tenor in the choir. He was an active member of the Bland County Rescue Squad Board of Directors, volunteer for Wythe/Bland Hospice, member of Tazewell-East Gideon Camp serving as secretary and served as a spiritual leader with the Bland Correctional Farm Prison Ministry. He taught school for 35 years, serving as a science teacher at Bradshaw Junior High in McDowell County from 1956-1961; a science teacher at Garfield High School in Prince William County from 1961-9162; served as an art teacher, media specialist, and assistant principal at Fred Lynn Junior High from 1962-1971; was a media specialist at Garfield High School from 1971-1977; and the remaining 15 years were taught in Wythe County as an art and English teacher at Fort Chiswell High School where he was known as "Mr. C." After retiring in July 1991, he did gardening on his farm in Kimberling Valley in Bland County, woodworking, 4-wheeling, bird watching, restoring his '31 A-Model, traveling, and being with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Harrison Cox of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Joyce Cox and Robert E. "Bob" Snyder of King, N.C.; his father, Lamer R. Cox of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie E. and Charlotte Cox of Stafford; and a host of family and friends.

Claude Franklin Davis Jr.
Claude Franklin Davis Jr., 73, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Graveside services and interment were held Friday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Robert Layell officiating. The American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military rites. Masonic memorial services were held Thursday, Aug. 28, at 8 p.m. conducted by the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F.&A.M.
He was a member of the Cedar Hill United Methodist Church where he served as teacher, superintendent and board member and was retired from the New York Life Insurance Company with 36 years of service. He was a member and past master of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F.&A.M. and taught masonry for more than 16 years. He was three times commander of American Legion Post No. 9 and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served in the European Theatre.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine S. Davis of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sherry D. and Gerald Melton of Wytheville; a son, Claude Franklin Davis III of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Lorri M. Atwell, Ian C. Anderson, and W. Bart Melton; two great-granddaughters, Leia and Brett Atwell; three sisters, Yvonne D. Monk of North Tazewell, Margaret D. Henshall of Silver Springs, Md., and Scarlett D. Swall of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and two brothers, Richard E. Davis of Gainesville, Fla., and Robert L. Davis of Knoxville, Tenn.
