Charles R. Hartley
Charles R. "Papa Jack" Hartley, 86, of Route 1, Waynesboro, (Hermitage), died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 17, at 11 a.m. in the Crossroads Baptist Church, Fishersville, with the Pastor Bill Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the Augusta Memorial Park.
He was born on July 20, 1911, in Ivanhoe, a son of the late William Howard and Melinda Elizabeth Hill Hartley. He was a bridge foreman, retiring from the Seaboard Coastline Railroad. He was a charter member of the Crossroads Baptist Church and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Employees.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles William Hartley; and a daughter-in-law, Mary C. Hartley.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Cecil Williams Hartley; three sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Kenneth and Erma Hartley of Suffolk, Richard Hicks and Linda A. Hartley of Newport News, and Robert Michael and Peggy B. Hartley of Yorktown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jacqueline Hartley and William T. Mixon, and Dolores Hartley and Ernest E. Poole, all of Staunton; a sister Mrs. W.W. Dunford of Ashtabula, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charles W. (Cricket) Hartley of Waynesboro; and 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Robert Lewis Mabe
Robert Lewis Mabe, 77, of Max Meadows, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard Lindamood and the Rev. Randy Morris. Interment will be in the West End cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 9, will conduct military graveside rites.
He was a well-known retired merchant, owner and operator of Fort Chiswell Grocery for 17 years and served on the Wythe County Board of Supervisors for the Fort Chiswell District. He was a veteran of World War II of the European Campaign and was retired from Hercules Corp. where he worked for 22 years.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Porter Mabe of Max Meadows; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lena and Jake Davis, Carol and Mike Reynolds, all of Max Meadows, and Claudia and Roy Gallimore of Pulaski; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lewis Jr. and Pat Mabe of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Frank Mabe of Bristol; two granddaughters and seven grandsons.

Bonnie Marie McCathron
Bonnie Marie McCathron, 53, of Abingdon, formerly of Groseclose, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment followed in the St. Mary's cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Deneena Joyce McCathron of Abingdon, and Amber Davis of Gaithersburg, Md.; her mother, Hazel Marie Jones of Wytheville; two sisters, Terry Welch of Atkins, and Sandy Ward of Maryland; two brothers, Hobert Welch of Marion, and Danny Gail Welch of Atkins; a special friend, Elizabeth Smith; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetic Treatment Center at Bristol Regional Medical Center in her name.

Lucy Lee Holliday Copeland, 88, of Ivanhoe, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Earl Hanks and the Rev. D.F. Bennett officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Robert and Annie Strickler Holliday. She was a member of Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jessie Wallace Copeland.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy "Dot" and Harold Davis of Ivanhoe, and Bonnie and Alvie Walke of Route 3, Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, William H. "Bill" and Della Copeland of Route 1, Max Meadows, Earl R. and Fran Copeland, and David T. "Tom" and Katherine Copeland, all of Ivanhoe; two sisters, Mamie Bralley, and Betty Holliday, both of Ivanhoe; and seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Lula Belle Cole Duncan, 61, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 12, at 2:30 p.m. in the Rural Retreat Baptist Church. Interment was in Independence cemetery, Independence, with the Rev. Fred E. Jennings, Rev. David Trump, and Rev. Ray Haskett officiating.
She was born July 1, 1936, in Independence, to Cebert and Jenny Owens Cole. She was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church.
She is survived by six daughters and sons-in-law, Doris and Steve McFarlan, Wilma and Keith Arnold, Patricia and Mike Cline, Janie Grubb, all of Rural Retreat, Barbara and Bill Ward of Sparta, N.C., and Linda and Charlie Duncan of Wytheville; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sherry Hamm of Gastonia, N.C., Billy and Joan Hamm of Mocksville, and William and Tammy Hamm of Rural Retreat; two daughters-in-law, Shelia Brown of Rural Retreat, and Sherry Hamm Crockett of Wytheville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Nannie and Connie Osborne of Independence, Pauline and John Cornett, and Lena and Ralph Johnson, all of Maryland; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert and Mildred Cole, Joe and Ann Cole, and Harold and Ruth Cole, all of Independence; and 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Jerry B. Harman, 48, of Greenbelt, Md., and formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Hoyle officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
He was a pathologist with the Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, Md.
He is survived by his parents, Bays and Della Harman of Rural Retreat; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and George Williams of Bluefield, W.Va.; one nephew, Jason Williams of Bluefield, W.Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ellen Mae Burnett Alford, 78, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Smith and Ann Blair officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late John H. and Lilly Gravely Burnett. She was a member of the West End United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.R. Alford Sr.; daughter, Gloria Jean Alford Hall; and a brother, Homer C. Burnett.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, J.D. and Janice Alford, and W.R. Alford Jr., all of Wytheville; four grandsons and spouses, Marty and Judy Alford, Mike and Cindy Alford, all of Wytheville, Brandon Alford of Galax, and Ralph H. Mattie Grace Jones, 93, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late George W. and Elizabeth Eastwood Jones.
She is survived by two nephews, Warren D. Jones of Lanham, Md., and Larry Lee Jones of Boston, Mass.; and several other niece and nephews.

Danny Eugene Arnold, 47, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. A.C. Ashford, Rev. Joe Arnold and the Rev. Lewis Arnold officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion cemetery. American Legion Post No. 9 conducted graveside military honors.
He was an employee of Austinville Limestone Company, and a U.S. Marine veteran of Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delmos L. Arnold.
Survivors include his wife, Penny S. Arnold of the home; a daughter, Crystal Arnold of the home; a son, Paul Newberry II of the home; his mother, Margie Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Wiley Dempsey of Route 3, Wytheville; and a special nephew, Brian Arnold of Route 3, Wytheville.

Leona Pearl Brinkley Brown, 83, of Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late John I. and Mary Alice Jones Brinkley. She was a member of the Wytheville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew J. Brown.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence (Deloris) Kusmierczyk of San Antonio, Texas; a son, Gary Brown of Hudson, Ohio; five sisters, Elizabeth Dunford, Hazel Neese, Ruth Decatur, all of Wytheville, Ethel Godsey of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Emma Sue Crigger of Richmond; one brother, Paul Brinkley of Lenior, N.C.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Atha Elizabeth Corvin, 85, of Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William Bufford and Cora Belle Irvin Corvin.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Corvin; and a sister, Hazel Corvin.
Survivors include two sisters, Patsy Brunk, and Katherine Hedrick, both of Wytheville; a brother, William Bufford Corvin Jr. of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert Crutchfield, 76, of Mount Airy, Md., originally from Bluefield and Wythe County, died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, in Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett officiating. Interment followed in the Thomas Family cemetery in Max Meadows.
He was born in West Virginia, a son of the late Jesse H. and Bessie Vaughn Crutchfield. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post No. 191 and VFW Post No. 1076, Mount Airy, Md.
He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Thomas Crutchfield of the home; three sons, David Crutchfield, Gary Crutchfield, and Phillip Crutchfield, all of Mount Airy, Md.; a close niece, Rita Thomas of Frederick, Md.; three sisters, Bernice Colson of Sunman, Ind., Olga Gaubarci of Miami, Fla., and Virginia Beasley of Colorado; one brother, Herbert Crutchfield of Clear Fork, W.Va.; and six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
