Brenda Joyce Gravely, 51, of Route 3, Max Meadows, the Fox Mountain Community, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Kenneth Fogus officiating. Interment followed in the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.
She was a member of the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Cox; and an infant son.
Survivors include her husband, Norma D. "Doug" Gravely of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Bruce Ogle of Max Meadows, and Michelle and Tim Woods of Draper; three sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Lora Gravely, Wesley and Beth Gravely, and Darrel and Tina Gravely, all of Max Meadows; her mother, Ersel L. Cox Smith of Max Meadows; seven grandchildren, Ashleigh Gravely, Christopher Gravely, Tyler Ogle, Jessi Ogle, Jacquelyn Gravely, Brandon Gravely, and Derek Gravely; five half-sisters and two half-brothers.

Chris Neal "June" King Jr., 72, of Atkins, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 14, at 2:30 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9.
He was veteran of World War II and was retired from Magnetic Technologies.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Gunter King of Atkins; a son, Robert Wayne King of Wytheville; a sister, Ethel Blair of Ivanhoe; a brother, William "Bill" King of Ivanhoe; a sister-in-law, Nellie Mae Hurst of Wytheville; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, David and Peggy Shermer of Wytheville.
The family will receive friends Saturday, June 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel.

Sara Ferguson Atwell Llewellyn, 85, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, in Richmond.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home in Midlothian. Entombment will be in the Forest Lawn cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Dan Foglesong of Midlothian; a sister, Minnie Gillespie of Saltville; four grandsons, Mark Foglesong, Gilfert Foglesong and Allen Foglesong, all of Midlothian, and James Foglesong of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Celina Kramer Schroeter, 83, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at her residence.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold K. Schroeter and Jayne Hall of the home, and Bruno O. Jr. and Mary Schroeter of Dix, Ill.; two daughters and son-in-law, Mitzi Bradshaw of Harrisonburg, Mo., and Cathryn A. and Terry Eichenseer of Boise, Ida.; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Stanley M. Umbarger, 55, of Route 1, Bastian, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., at the Red Oak Union Church with the Rev. G.L. East officiating. Entombment will follow in the Red Oak cemetery in Ceres. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was a member of the Dayspring Church in Wytheville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jonas Jackson Umbarger.
Survivor include his wife, Sandra Burge Umbarger of the home; a daughter, Tessa Umbarger Minter of Powhatan; two sisters, Starr Umbarger Bivens of Wytheville, and Enid Umbarger of Bluefield; a brother, Owen Henry Umbarger of Tazewell; his mother, Brooksie Neel Umbarger of Bastian; and two grandchildren, Evan Minter and Lindsey Minter.

James Bryan Williams, 70, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Speedwell, died Monday, June 1, 1998.
Burial was held Thursday, June 4, in the Holly Hill Memorial Gardens in Baltimore, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Marie I. Stuart Williams; children, James A. Williams, Velva J. Heinze, Bobby D. Williams, Pamela E. Liedner and Jane M. Skrzytiec; a brother, Ronald Williams; a sister, Mildred Semoines; 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews in Wythe County.

John Daniel Archer, 74, of Richmond, formerly of Wythe County, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, in the Johnston Willis Hospital.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 20, at 2:30 p.m. at the Archer Family cemetery with Sam Mabe officiating.
He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late Haswell M. Sr. and Ferba Turman Archer. He was retired from C Xpress.
He was preceded in death by a brother, H.M. Archer Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie R. Archer of the home; one son, Gary D. Archer of Blue Ridge; one daughter, Rebecca J. Archer of Verona; a stepdaughter, Joy Ozmar of Richmond; one brother, James K. Archer of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Pauline A. Nichols of Wytheville, and Opal A. Gussie Tarter Dixon, 89, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Mt. Ephraim cemetery.
She was born in Crockett, a daughter of the late Robert Blair Tarter and Lettie Ward Hedrick Tarter. She was a member of the Mt. Ephraim United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Straley Dixon.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsye Dixon of Wytheville; a sister, Ruby Smith of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Chester Martin Sasser
Chester Martin Sasser, 85, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 18, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Interment followed in the St. John's cemetery.
He was born in London, Ky., the son of the late Dixon and Anna Hamill Sasser. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82, A.F.&A.M. and the Kazim Shrine Temple. He was retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Pam Cook.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanora "June" Umberger Sasser of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, James D. and Frances B. Sasser of Radford; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and A.G. Gravley of Arlington; two grandchildren and spouses, Teresa Gae and Curtis Lee Cook of Christiansburg, and Timothy Martin and Rhonda Sasser of Dublin; and two great-grandchildren, Mary Alice Cook and Michael Cook, both of Christiansburg.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, the Wythe County Rescue Squad, or the charity of choice.

Elec C. "Doc" Samples, 83, of Warner Robins, Ga., died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, in the V.A. Hospital in Dublin, Ga.
A memorial service was held Friday, June 19, at 3 p.m. at the residence with Father Fred Nijem officiating.
He was a native of Orlando, Fla., and had lived in Warner Robins, Ga. for the past 35 years, after moving from Gainesville, Ga. He was a self-employed jeweler, a member of the Al Sihah Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite. He had served in the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant during World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bralley Samples of Warner Robins, Ga., formerly of Southwest Virginia; a daughter, Oreta Marie Sample of Warner Robins, Ga.; three sisters, Dorothy Turner of Charleston, S.C., Jeanette Phillips of Green Cove Springs, Fla., and Jeneva Green of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Anna Vaught Early, 78, of Pulaski, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel in Pulaski with the Rev. James Jenkins officiating. Interment followed in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin.
She was born Jan. 10, 1920, in Wytheville. She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Pulaski. She was a retired employee of Norfolk & Western Railway with over 30 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas O. and Annie Virginia Vaught; and a sister, Loretta Fuller.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, John William Early Sr. of Pulaski; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John W., Jr. and Vickie Early of Roanoke, and Larry J. Early of Cincinnati, Ohio; one grandson, Taylor Early of Roanoke; three sisters, Lucille Vaught, Sue Dunkley, both of Wytheville, and Bonnie Crigger of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Tom Vaught, George Vaught, and Mack Vaught, all of Wytheville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Wade "Shotgun" Graham, 81, of Route 2, Allisonia, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salem.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Stuart officiating. Interment followed in the Snow cemetery.
He was born in Pulaski County, a son of the late Lee Andrew Graham and Florady Gunter Graham and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by one son, James R. Snow of Barren Springs; two sisters, Annie Gregory, and Ida Smith, both of Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary "Pete" Turner Bays, 65, of Matthews, N.C., formerly of Wytheville, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, in a Monroe, N.C. Hospice House.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore R. Sr. and Bertha Jones Turner; and a brother, Christopher Otey Turner.
