William R. Kinzer Jr.
William R. "W.R." Kinzer Jr., 63, of Old Stage Road, Bristol, Tenn., died suddenly Monday, May 25, 1998, at his home.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 27, at 8 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Bristol, Tenn. The committal service and burial was held Thursday, May 28, at 2 p.m. in the Cedar Grove cemetery, Athens, Tenn.
He was a native of Wytheville and had lived in Bristol, Tenn., since 1964. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was terminal manager of the former Jones Motor Company for 19 years and at the time of his death was terminal manager for Logex Express.
He is survived by his wife, Lovada Kinzer; his mother, Ardelia Kinzer Palmer of Pulaski; two daughters, Mrs. Jeff (Jane) Godsey of Greenville, S.C., and Mrs. Dodd (Cheryl) King of Bluff City, Tenn.; two sons, Rudy Kinzer of Knoxville, Tenn., and Steve Kinzer of Houston, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Laurie Kinzer; and 10 grandchildren.

Mark Christopher Muncy, 42, of Bland, died Saturday, May 23, 1998, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich and the Rev. June Miller officiating.
He was born in Grundy, a son of the late Gilbert Carter and Constance Evans Muncy.
He is survived by a brother, Bruce Carter Muncy of Virginia Beach.
The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad or the Bland Volunteer Fire Department.

William Oakley "Willie" Patrick, 45, of Wytheville, formerly of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Howell Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Carl McArn. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.
He was born Nov. 17, 1952, to Frank and Ethel Patrick of Mount Airy, N.C. He graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1971 and later attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville, N.C. where he worked for the Asheville Citizen as a sports editor. He graduated from East Carolina University and served as assistant sports information director at the school. He also worked as a sports information director at West Virginia University; public relations director for the New York Yankees' minor league team in Paintsville, Ky. and the defunct Carolina Chargers; sports editor at the Azalea City News in Mobile, Ala. and the Mt. Airy Times in Mount Airy, N.C.; editor of The Messenger in Salisbury, N.C.; court reporter for the Salisbury Post; reporter for the Kannapolis (NC) Daily Independent and Inside Motorsports and most recently as associate editor with Late Model Digest. He also authored several articles for NASCAR magazine, Stock Car Racing magazine and the Stock Car Report on the Internet.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Julia "Judy" Patrick.
Survivors include his parents, Frank and Ethel Patrick of Mount Airy, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Carol Patrick of Lincolnton, N.C.; a fiancée, Rebecca L. Stevens of Cary, N.C.; and one niece, Linda Patrick Williams of Hickory, N.C.

James Lawrence White Jr. of Willis, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his home.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara White; and a grandson, Mark White Jr.

Rayfield Lee Whitman
The Rev. Rayfield Lee Whitman, 76, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 1, at 3 p.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church. Interment will follow in the Oakwood cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Bryant, Texas, the son of the late Rayfield L. and Annie Whitman. He graduated from Campbell High School in Texas and attended Wilber Force University for two years. He was ordained at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, W.Va., served as pastor of numerous churches including Bethlehem Baptist Church, Wytheville. He was a member of the "Promise Keepers", a member of the NAACP and the Ministers Alliance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his former wife, Hedy A. Whitman of Wytheville; one son, Rayfield L. Whitman III of Wytheville; four daughters, Sherry Austin and Rachelle Whitman, both of Wytheville, the Rev. Dawn Elizabeth Whitman of Greensboro, N.C., and Angie Whitman of Altoona, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Cassandra Nicole Whitman, Omar Whitman and Olivia LeAnne Austin.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home or at the residence of Hedy Whitman at any time.

Millard Ray "Mousie" Cline, 79, of Route 1, Speedwell, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, at 3 p.m. at the Speedwell United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Perkins and the Rev. Larry Linkous officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Albert Kyle and Minnie Brewer Cline. He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Williams Cline; two sons, Larry and Joseph Cline; two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and James Porter of Wytheville; a son, Delmar Ray Cline of Speedwell; two grandsons and spouse, Keith and Lisa Porter of Greenville, S.C., and Michael Porter of Wytheville; two granddaughters and spouses, Ava and Daniel Arnold of Max Meadows, and Lisa and Leon Frost of Galax; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Arnold and Emily Arnold; special friends, Mellie, Rhonda and Nina Meadows, all of Speedwell; and a brother, Roscoe Cline of Louisa.

Cassie Fowler Coake, 72, of Route 2, Austinville, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at the Bethany United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald White, the Rev. Raymond Coake, and the Rev. Jerry Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.
She was born in Carroll County, a daughter of the late Robert Wesley and Alice Myers Fowler. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church where she served in the choir, and a member of the lady Ruritans.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Lawrence Coake; one sister, Beatrice Bays; and two brothers, Orville Fowler and Marvin Fowler.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Coake Breeding of Johnson City, Tenn.; one son-in-law, James B. Breeding of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sons and daughter-in-law, Homer Ronnie and Sally Coake of Draper, and Ricky Lynn Coake of Route 3, Max Meadows; three granddaughters, Tonya Coake Akers, Amanda Leigh Parks, Megan Lynn Parks; four grandsons, Robert Hicks Parks III, Richard Brent Coake, Ronald Todd Coake, and Randal Brian Coake; four great-grandchildren, Ethan Cole Akers, Kaitlynn Brie Anne Coake, Landon Brent Coake, and Caleb Todd Coake; several nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

Lottie Dix Copenhaver, 91, of Crockett, died Sunday, May 31, 1998.

She was a member of the Kings Grove United Methodist Church in Crockett and a life member of the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie E. Copenhaver Sr.

Pauline Bogle Foglesong, 85, of Fisher Road, Wytheville, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at the Sharon Lutheran Church in Ceres with Pastor Mrs. Chris Foglesong officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Ceres, a daughter of the late L.D. and Martha Cassell Bogle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Foglesong; one brother and three sisters.
Survivors include a close friend, Terry Umbarger of Wytheville; a very special friend and caregiver, Judy Monahan of Speedwell; a special friend and neighbor, Pearl S. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat. The body will be taken to the church one hour before service time.
She was born in Wythe County the daughter of the late George and Mary Cletis Paris Smith. She was a church member and Sunday School secretary at the First Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by her husband, Delton J. "Tom" Horton of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Loren Adams of Fayetteville, Ark.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Donna Horton of Wytheville; three brothers, H.L. Smith of Wytheville, Bobby Smith of Salem, and Jerry Smith of West Chester, Pa.; four grandchildren, Chris Adams, Jeremy Adams, Brittney Horton and Todd Horton; a special friend, Bonnie Umberger of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

Laura Lee Lindamood, 91, of Wytheville, died Monday, June 1, 1998, in the Sands Nursing Home.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late John L. and Rebecca Lindamood. She was educated at public schools in Wythe County, and the old Wytheville High School and Radford State Teachers College.
She is survived by three nieces, Carolyn L. Cox, Kaye L. Vollmer, both of Wytheville, and Barbara L. Umberger of Kingsport, Tenn.; two nephews, Buford M. Lindamood of Galax, and John B. Lindamood of Columbus, Ohio; five great-nephews, C. Jeff Cox, John Marc Lindamood, John S. Pope, E. Keith Vollmer, and J. Clark Williams II; six great-nieces, Rebecca W. Cardwell, Judy G. Cox, Sherie L. Croson, Jodi C. Davis, C. Jean Snavely, and Mary Lou Vollmer; two great-great-nephews, Justin Snavely and Preston Cardwell; one great-great-niece, Carolyn Cardwell; and a sister-in-law, Irene Pugh Lindamood of Norfolk.

Claude Graham Manley
Claude Graham Manley, 82, of Route 1, Max Meadows, died Saturday, May 30, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Bob Lewis officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Zion United Methodist cemetery. Grover King Post No. 1115, V.F.W. conducted graveside military rites.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Robert G. and Maggie Ward Manley. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as Tech Sergeant with the 584th Bombardment Squadron, 394th Bombardment group. During his time in service, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Purple Heart. He was retired from the New Jersey Zinc Company with 33 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Aker Manley; and two brothers, David Manley, and Robert Manley.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Onetta and Ronald P. Lawson Sr. of Max Meadows, and Rebecca and P. Dean Prillaman of Martinsville; three grandsons, Ersel "Eric" Cline of Max Meadows, Chad Graham Cline of Nashville, Tenn., and Jacob Dean Prillaman of Martinsville; one great-granddaughter, Marlena Gail Cline of Barren Springs; two brothers, Clarence Manley of Hagerstown, Md., and Mac Manley of Silver Spring, Md.; and two sisters, Virginia Hearn of Wytheville, and Jean Arnold of Max Meadows.
