Thomas Sampson "Sam" Cameron, 65, of Rural Retreat, the Groseclose Community, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas J. Bunting officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post No. 4667.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Dewey and Bess Buck Cameron. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie King Cameron; one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Judy and Frank Hollandsworth of Marion; four stepsons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Donna King of Marion, Johnny King of Groseclose, David and Tammy King of Atkins, and Jerry and Betty King of Rural Retreat; two sisters, Mary Marshall of Germantown, Md. and Lorraine Hale of Richmond; one brother, Joe Cameron of Wytheville; and 10 stepgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Claude Howard "Sonny" Cregger, of Morrilton, Ark., formerly of Max Meadows, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Morrilton, Ark.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. at the Max Meadows United Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Burial will be held in the Battle Creek Michigan National cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel S. Cregger; and a brother, Robert S. Cregger.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Cregger of the home; two daughters, Tammy Palmer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dawn Cliarmont of Chybohen, Mich.; a brother, David O. Cregger of Max Meadows; his mother, Katherine Cregger of Max Meadows; two aunts, Virginia Spraker of Ivanhoe and Joyce Eddy of Wytheville; and 12 grandchildren, three stepdaughters, and one stepson.
The family will receive friends Sunday, April 26, from 2 p.m. until service time at the Max meadows United Methodist Church.

Eleanor Delores "Dolly" Porter Meekins, 77, died Monday, April 20, 1998, at a nursing center near her home in North East, Md.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at North East Methodist Church cemetery.
She was a native of Cripple Creek, a daughter of the late Stephen L. and Agnes Garber Porter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. John Meekins; a twin sister, Daphne Rhudy; and two brothers, Stephen L. Porter and Dan Porter.
Survivors include two sons, John Meekins of Alaska and Alfred Meekins of Lutherville, Md.; three daughters, Julia Benjamin, Iris Scott and Jane Meekins, all of Elkton, Md.; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Col. Phillip B. Porter (USAF Ret.) of Tampa, Fla., and Robert Porter of Cripple Creek; and two sisters, Mrs. Loyd (Margaret) Carpenter and Agnes Bolcer, both of Wytheville.
Willie Hudson Shortt
Willie Hudson Shortt, 85, of Wytheville, died Monday, April 20, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 24, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Steve Ridenhour. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
She was the daughter of the late William Grover and Nannie Arnold Hudson and was the widow of Raymond F. Shortt.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sibyl and Dennis Malatras of Columbia, Md., and Susan and Philp Seneker of Issaquah, Wash.; one sister, Beulah H. Johnson of Roanoke; one brother and sister-in-law, Woodrow and Atha Hudson of Wytheville; one brother-in-law, Jack Eversole of Newport News; grandchildren, Philp Jr. and Whitney Seneker, and Tracy and Jeffrey Vandivere; great-grandchildren, Rusty, Jeremy, and Ethan; and several nieces and nephews.

Claude Allen Dillman, 79, Roanoke, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, in Roanoke.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Red Oak Church cemetery in Ceres.
He was a son of the late Wiley Kent and Eliza Manerva Turley Dillman. He was born in Tazewell County on May 18, 1918, and lived several years in Bland County, but most of his life he lived in Giles County and Roanoke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Ethel Dillman and Pearl Dillman.
Survivors include two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dora and Warren Atkins of Pembroke, and Virgie Schaefer of Rocky Mount; and one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin and Dorothy Dillman of Salem.

Ella R. Dooley, 65, of Speedwell, died Monday, April 27, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the Speedwell United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to service time.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Waller; and a sister, Audrey Meyers.
Survivors include her husband, John I. Dooley of Speedwell; a daughter and son-in-law, Pauline and Darrell Garland of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Bobbie Dooley of Speedwell; a sister, Louise Jones of Wytheville; a brother, John Waller of Elk Creek; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Barbara "Ann" Dunford Mabe, 48, of Austinville, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, in the Roanoke Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 28, at 1 p.m. at the Ivanhoe Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Rocky Dalton and the Rev. James Black officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late David M. and Mary Katherine Akers Dunford. She was a member of Ivanhoe Church of God of Prophecy for more than 20 years where she served as superintendent of Sunday school and an adult teacher. She was a former employee of Cross Creek Apparel.
She is survived by her husband, Charles R. "Johnny" Mabe of the home; one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Donnie Doss of Ivanhoe; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Jean Dunford of Max Meadows, and Harold Dean and Phyllis Dunford of Ivanhoe; a special niece and nephew, Karen and Todd Dunford; a mother-in-law, Lena Farmer of Shawsville; a brother-in-law, Robert Mabe of Richmond; and several other nieces and one nephew.

Suella "Susie" Rowe Oglesby, 79, of Route 1, Draper, died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at her home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. from the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Preston O. Sartelle Jr. officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was born in Crockett, in Wythe County, on Oct. 6, 1918, and was the daughter of the late James Richard Rowe and Laura Ward Rowe. After graduating from Bluefield Business College she worked as a bank teller in Bluefield, W.Va. and a bookkeeper for Service Gas Company in Wytheville. She was a member of Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church and served many years as church treasurer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Shipp Oglesby Jr.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Christopher Doyle of Cutchogue, Long Island, N.Y.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Esther Oglesby III of Draper, and Bill and Mary Ann Oglesby of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Margaret Rowe of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Jane Luttrell of Salem, and Emily Rowe of Crockett; four grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Oglesby, Brian Oglesby Doyle, Mark Christopher Doyle, and Matthew Allen Waldorf; and 13 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Draper's Valley Presbyterian Church Mission Fund.

Jane Catherine Ayers, 79, of Galax, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in the Blue Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Oct. 23, 1918 in Carroll County, a daughter of the late David S. and Mary Martin Finney.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry D. Ayers.
Survivors include three sons, Elwood M. Ayers of Masa, Ariz., James P. Ayers of Pulaski and Alva L. Ayers of Independence; a brother, Marvin R. Finney of Gladesboro; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Kathleen Holliday, 84, of Max Meadows, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at the Asbury Center at Birdmont in Wytheville after a long illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 30, at 11 a.m. at the Red Bluff A.M.E. Church.
She was born March 10, 1914, in Draper, a daughter of the late Caroline Holmes. She was a member of the Harrison Chapel United Methodist Church, Max Meadows, and a member of the Pulaski Chapter No. 35 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past worthy matron.
She is survived by her husband, Langhon Holliday of Birdmont Manor, Wytheville; a special niece, Bernice Henderson of Fort Chiswell; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Garnett Miller Ager, 81, of Wytheville, died Sunday, May 3, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 6, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnett and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Nelson and Nancy Blanche Andrews Ager. He was a prominent retired Wythe County farmer. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville Rotary Club and the Big Walker Soil and Water Conservation District.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Shelling Ager; and a brother, Arthur Henry Ager Sr.
Survivors include a niece, Kathleen Elaine and Dr. Henry Tyrrell of Burtonsville, Md.; a nephew, Arthur Henry Jr. and Linda Ager of Nashville, Tenn.; a special cousin, Genevieve Walters of Wytheville; and a special friend, Rebecca Grubb of Wytheville.
