Opal Nadine Six, 60, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Revs. Bill and Penny Dale, the Rev. Billy Mack Fisher and the Rev. Larry Barnes officiating. Interment followed in the West End cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Eugene Porter.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry B. Six of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda Fisher and James Barton of Wytheville, Rhonda and Danny Williams of Palestine, Texas, and Tammy and Chuck Martin of Max Meadows; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Dallas "Sonny" and Robin Fisher, and Gary Wayne and Becky Fisher, all of Crockett, Texas; her mother, Edna Fisher Porter of Wytheville; four sisters and brother-in-law, Norma Jean Eversole of Max Meadows, Frances Waddell, Wanda Garland, and Velma Kaye and Loring Pattison, all of Wytheville; a brother and sister-in-law, George D. and Loma Porter of Wytheville; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Timothy Michael Waddell; and several other nieces and nephews.

John J. Smith
John J. Smith, 76, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 27, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the Lebanon Lutheran Church cemetery.
He was retired from Hedrick Motor Co., and was one of the original members and founders of the Wythe County Rescue Squad.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Catron.
Survivors include his wife, Izella C. Smith of Wytheville; a daughter, Carolyn S. Hedrick of Wytheville; a sister, Maye Hughes of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Gillman Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
Flora Surratt Montgomery Sumner
Flora Surratt Montgomery Sumner, 107, of Wytheville, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville with Elder Sidney Rakes officiating. Interment will be in the Smith-Montgomery cemetery.
She was born Aug. 27, 1889, in Carroll County.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vergie Evans.
Survivors include a daughter, Canary DeBoer of Pulaski; two sisters, Daisy Alderman of Woodlawn, and Lily Myers of Pulaski; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Laura Collins Thacker
Laura Collins Thacker, 93, of Austinville, died Friday, Dec. 27, 1996, at the residence of her daughter, Louise Thacker in Roanoke.
Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 30 at 2:30 p.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Long officiating.
She was born in Max Meadows, a daughter of the late Carter Braxton and Laura Ellen Whisman Collins, and was a member of the Austinville Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chaffin C. Thacker; and a son, Fred A. Thacker.
Survivors include two daughters, Madeleine Thacker of Austinville, and Louise Thacker of Roanoke; three sons and daughters-in-law, Chaffin C. Jr. and Lorene Thacker of Austinville, Billy B. and Frances Thacker of Austinville, and Bobby M. and Janie Thacker of Jefferson City, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Larry W. Thacker of Max Meadows, Curtis R. Thacker of Richmond, John L. Thacker of Henderson, N.C., Edward C. Thacker, Robert C. Thacker, both of Charlotte, N.C., Lisa T. Anderson of Newark, Del., William R. Thacker of Carlisle, Pa., and Laura Huchens of Memphis, Tenn.; three great-grandchildren, Ian Anderson, Nancy Thacker, and Nathan Thacker; two sisters, Lillie C. Lawson of Woodlawn, and Ida C. Stoots of Suffolk; and two special friends, Emma Jones and Patsy Pyron.

Mattie Catherine Wohlford
Mattie Catherine Wohlford, 80, of Columbus, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, from cancer.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, at 1 p.m. at Schoedinger Worthington Chapel, 6699 N. High St., Worthington, Ohio. Interment will be in the Northlawn Memory Gardens.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and caring for her family.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Umberger; and a sister Ethel Cline.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Joseph Wohlford; three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Jim Rosenbaum of Virginia, Eva and Luther Havens of Columbus, Ohio, and Mary Jo "Jodie" Andre of Worthington, Ohio; two stepsons and wives, Claude and Louise Wohlford of Georgia, and Carl and Joan Wohlford of Florida.; a stepdaughter and husband, Elizabeth and Harland Cline of Arizona; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Lena Umberger; seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Kegley, Audrey Simmerman, Edna Kegley, Louise and Cecil Irvin, Jettie and Hugh Porter, Ruth Wohlford, all of Virginia, and Norma and Henry Wills of Columbus, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Cecil (Joyce) Umberger; and numerous nieces and nephews.

William U. Havens
William U. Havens, 83, of Spring Lake, N.C., formerly of Rural Retreat, died Monday, Dec. 30, 1996, in the Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg, N.C.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, at 11 a.m. at the Adcock Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the LaFayette Park-West in Fayetteville, N.C. with military honors.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the Army as a master sergeant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Henry and Ruth Rose Havens.
Survivors include his wife, Ok Yon Havens of the home; a daughter, Peggy Shepherd of Arizona; a son, William J. Havens of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, Muncy Havens of Atkins, Walter Havens of Sugar Grove, and Floyd Havens of Marion; two sisters, Beatrice Parks of Sugar Grove, and Della M. Stowers of Wytheville; and seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Sherd Hedge
Sherd Hedge, 91, of Dublin Road, Pulaski, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at the Pulaski Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with the Rev. C.R. Conner officiating, assisted by the Rev. A.C. Ashford. Interment followed in the Appalachian Pentecostal Holiness Conference cemetery, Dublin.
He was born July 18, 1905, in Radford, the son of the late Jessie Wade Hedge and Fairy Belle Myers Hedge. He was a life member of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pulaski, where he served as treasurer, deacon, church board member and usher; and he was head usher at the Appalachian Pentecostal Holiness Conference Church Camp meetings for many years at Dublin.
He worked for a Wytheville lumber company for 14 years and later moved to Pulaski where he worked for the former Virginia Oak Flooring Company and former Pulaski Building Supply Company with approximately 32 years of service with the two companies as office worker.
He started out helping Barnett's Funeral Home, Wytheville, the former Strickler's Funeral Home with 20 years of service and now the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski, with 26 years of service.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Sadie Richardson; and four brothers, Clyde Hedge, Homer Hedge, Jessie Hedge and Mack Hedge.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Georgia Helen Kirby Hedge of Pulaski; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Sandy Petruso of Charlotte, N.C., and Shirley and Ron Mulford of Salisbury, Md.; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl H. and Aline Hedge of Madison Heights; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Kirby of Dublin, Stella Wagoner of Radford, and Edna Keffer of Richmond.

Gary Edsel Kelly
Pastor Gary Edsel Kelly, 64, of Route 1, Crockett, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at his residence.
Funeral celebration services will be held Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church with Bishop Richard F. Bansemer, Pastor Jim Bangle, Pastor Ed Schaack, and Pastor Joe Shumate officiating. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
He was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Glade Hill (Franklin County), the son of the late Lucian Ted and Minnie Alice Smith Kelly. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a former fireman with the Roanoke City Fire Department, and had worked for the Texaco Oil Company. He served as Lutheran pastor at the Floyd-Willis parish for 11 years, and the Cripple Creek parish in Crockett for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Kelly of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Deidre Kelly and Garvice Jones of Boones Mill, and Christina Marie Kelly of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gary William Kelly, Timothy David and Jennifer Kelly, and Michael Goebel and Judy Kelly, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Sean Kelly, Erin Kelly, Brandon Kelly, Katie Kelly, Monica Cowden, Angela Jones, and Amy Jones; and his mother-in-law, Admiral Cole of Roanoke.
The family will receive friends at the residence at any time and following the services at the church with a potluck luncheon.
The family requests that those who prefer, may make memorials to the United Lutheran Memorial Fund.

Jackie Crawford Price Dickerson, 86, of Barren Springs, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Glenwood United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Crawford Family cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late George Samuel and Minnie Mabry Crawford. She was a member of the Glenwood United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmond B. Price and Robert Lee Dickerson.
Survivors include one son, George Thomas Price of Barren Springs; two sisters-in-law, Zora Crawford and Gertie Crawford, both of Barren Springs; and several nieces and nephews.

Edith Edna Martin Felty
Edith Edna Martin Felty, 102, of Wytheville, died Friday, Jan. 3, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel. Interment followed in the East End cemetery.
She was born Feb. 18, 1894, in Greenwood, a daughter of the late John William and Matilda Jane Moyer Martin. She graduated from Greenwood High School and Roanoke Business College. She came to Wytheville and accepted a position with the S.F. Ewald Insurance Agency in 1914. She joined the St. Paul Methodist Church in 1915 where she taught Sunday school for 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Felty; and an infant son.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Willis L. (Helen) Corvin, and Mrs. William L. (Margaret) Snavely of Wytheville; grandchildren, William B. and Mary Corvin of Herndon, Willis G. and Loretta Corvin of Thaxton, Lynda H. and Ray Dossett of Morehead City, N.C., and Robert J. and Caroline Hurt of Smithfield; a step-grandson, Michael and Teresa Snavely of Marion; 11 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Maude Du Bois of Milford, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Repass of Birdmont Health Care Center, Wytheville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Cora Taylor "Momma" Jackson, 103, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Richard Lindamood and the Rev. Richard Collins officiating. Interment will follow in the Fred T. Jackson Family cemetery.
She was born in Carroll County, the daughter of the late Tom and Susan Stoots Taylor. She was a charter member of the Max Meadows United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Thomas Jackson; and two sons, Versal T. Jackson and C. Gleaves Jackson.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Mildred J. Dobbins, and Alma J. and David K. Collins, all of Route 2, Wytheville; a son and daughters-in-law, Frederick D. and Pauline Jackson of Route 2, Wytheville, and Zerline Jackson of Austinville; a half-sister, Vertie Bell Booth of Pulaski; and 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
