Mattie Cassell Umberger, 86, of Salem, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996, at home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke with Pastor Kenneth P. Lane Jr. officiating. Interment will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the St. John's cemetery in Wytheville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward B. Umberger Jr.; and a daughter, Hattie U. Lewis.
Survivors include a son, E. Bruce Umberger III of Salem; two daughters and their spouses, Margaret and Sonny Umberger of Salem, and Sylvia and Wayne "Bob" Ratliff of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Corey D. Umberger, Kayley D. Umberger, and Dylan W. Davis; a former son-in-law, Hurley R. Lewis of Shawsville; and a special friend, Janie Melvin of Salem.

Renea Jonas Englar, 32, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Wytheville, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 1996, at Gilchrist Hospice Center.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Gary Kelly at the Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville.
She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Englar III; two daughters, Cara A. Englar and Brianna E. Englar, both of Baltimore, Md.; her parents Floyd "Tommy" and Hilda Hoback Jonas of Wytheville; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael S. and Lisa G. Jonas of Wytheville; a grandmother, Virginia S. Hoback of Route 3, Wytheville; father and mother-in-law, Bill and Mary Englar of Abingdon, Md.

Beaulah King Mabe Hill
Beaulah King Mabe Hill, 89, of Ivanhoe, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996, in the Birdmont Health Care Center in Wytheville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at the Ivanhoe Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. William Hill and the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Walter P. and Lena Jones King. She was a charter member of the Ivanhoe Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served as pianist for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ambrose A. Mabe and John R. Hill; and a step-son, Walter R. Mabe.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Mabe of Austinville, Burlin and Lillian Mabe of Route 3, Wytheville, and Beauford and Vinnia Mabe of Bristol; four step-daughters and spouses, Edith and Matthew King of Collinsville, Laura and Lee Williams of Wytheville, Henrietta Ingo of Ivanhoe, and Hazel Hill of Richmond; two step-daughters-in-law, Wilma and Martha Hill of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, 34 step-great-grandchildren, and several step-great-great-grandchildren.

Maude Frances Blevins Vipperman, 57, of Route 1, Rural Retreat, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Hoyle and the Rev. Curtis King officiating. Interment followed in the Mountain View cemetery in Rural Retreat.
She is survived by her husband, Willard L. Vipperman; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. William D. (Debby) Oliver of Radford, Mrs. Harold W. (Mary) Pruitt of Bland, Mrs. Jeffrey D. (Tammy) Parker of Rural Retreat, and Mrs. Gene (Teresa) Lambert of Bland; four sisters, Charlotte Combs of Joppa, Md., Sadie King of Rural Retreat, Dorothy Sullivan, and Susie Miller, both of Edgewood, Md.; four brothers, Malcolm Blevins of Rural Retreat, Douglas Blevins, Bill Blevins, and Kenny Blevins, all of Edgewood, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Jesse Mikos, Becky Mikos, David Oliver, Joshua Oliver, Casie Pruitt, Dawn Dinger, Dusty Parker, Audrey Parker, Cody Parker, and Samantha Lambert; three great-grandchildren, Destiny Mikos, Shane Kincaid, and Kelsey Dinger; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Stoots Fields, 84, of Austinville died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1996, at the home of her son in Pensacola, Fla.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Merril Woodson and the Rev. Jerry Long officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethany cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Stewart R. and Lucy Nixon Stoots and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Fields Sr.; a son, John B. Fields Jr.; a sister, Esther Carter; and a brother, Buford Stoots.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Nathan K. and Dianne D. Fields of Pensacola, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Roby and Ola Stoots of Fries; and eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

William Grubb
William "Bill" Grubb, 75, of Elkton, Md. and formerly of Wythe County died Monday, Nov. 4, 1996, in the Union Hospital of Cecil County Maryland.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. in the Berea Christian Church conducted by Rev. Gerald Etter. Interment will follow in the Berea Christian Church cemetery.
He was a retired carpenter and was a son of the late Walter and Georgia Etter Grubb.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia K. Grubb of Elkton, Md.; a daughter, Karen Lee Lancaster of Delaware City, Del.; a son, David Andrew Grubb of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Dollie Robinson, and Erma Frye, both of Wytheville; a brother, John Grubb of Wytheville; and six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Annie Belle Jones, 82, of Wytheville died Thursday, Nov. 7, 1996, in the Malin Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Gillman Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Groseclose Chapel Church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank P. Jones.
Survivors include one brother and sisters-in-law, Lewis and Gracie Hales of Crockett; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lee Hale of Crockett; three nieces, Nettie Lee Farmer of Crockett, Emma Sue Sheppard of Max Meadows, and Bonnie Williams of Speedwell; two nephews, Raymond Hale of Keeling, and Robert Hale of Crockett; and a host of step-children and step-grandchildren.

Clyde Bobby "Jack" Brown, 59, of Route 2, Wytheville, the Muskrat Community, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Vaughn Earl Hartsell officiating. Interment followed in the East End cemetery.
He was the son of the late George and Mae Davis Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Cleita Brown of Wytheville; two daughters, Regina Pike and Mary J. Brown, both of Wytheville; one son, Barry Matthew Brown of Lynchburg; three sisters, Frances Keely, Georgia Staley, both of Wytheville, and Helen Williams of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, George William "Bill" Brown of Wytheville; and one granddaughter, Kelsey J. Wilburn of Wytheville.

George Kemp Burchett, 74, of Ivanhoe, died Monday, Nov. 11, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Joseph and Cora Waddel Burchett and was a retired auto mechanic from Hudson Chevrolet in Pulaski.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby M. Burchett, of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Katherine and Robert Bond of Fries, Brenda and Roger Collins, Debbie Sue and Virgil McMickle, and Marcie and John Blair, all of Ivanhoe; three sons and daughter-in-law, Clinton Orren, William "Tom Dooley" and Nancy Jefferson, all of Ivanhoe, and James Dewey Dunford of Watertown, N.Y.; two brothers, Charles Burchett of Ivanhoe, and Edd Burchett of Laurel Fork; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Justin and Tony Blair, Josh and Seth Dunford, C.J. Dunford, Michael and Nathan Jefferson, and Denise Shaffer; and one great-grandchild.

Harry Alonzo Conner, 74, of Wytheville, died Friday, Nov. 8, 1996, at his residence.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Oakwood cemetery, with the Rev. Kennith Johnson officiating.
He was the son of the late Sterns and Fanny Johnson Conner Hounshell.
He is survived by two sisters, Emma A. Woodson of Wytheville, and Laura N. Milton of Christiansburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Clariette Easter King Farris Deitch, 81, died Friday, Nov. 8, 1996.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Haisley-Hobbs Funeral Home in Ft. Pierce, Fla., with Minister Tommy York officiating. Burial was held in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Vero Beach, Fla.
A native of Springfield, Ohio, and former resident of Ft. Pierce, Fla., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Rachel Jane Burback King. She was a member of the Protestant Church.
She was preceded in death by her late husbands, William Herbert Farris and George T. Deitch Sr.; five brothers and one sister, Leveda Bowens, Robert King, Wilford King, Clarence King, Albert King, and Ervin King; and a step-son, William Edward Deitch.
Survivors include three daughters, Georgia Lucille Venters, Joanne Lyons, both of Athens, and Betty Jane Rose of Crockett; two sons, Lloyd Wilford Farris of Athens, and Ralph Elden Farris of Englewood, Tenn.; a foster daughter, Sharon Knoy of Englewood, Tenn.; three stepsons, George Thomas Deitch, John Clifford Deitch, both of California, and Ronnie Deitch of Ashley, Ohio; a brother, Ralph King of Springfield, Ohio; two sisters, Fleeta Colflesh of Columbus, Ohio, and Eleanor Jenkins of Springfield, Ohio; 25 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Oatie Ester Gillespie, 78, of Route 2, Bland, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1996, at his home.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, White Gate with the Rev. Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial was in the Mt. View cemetery, Pearisburg.
He was born Oct. 18, 1918, at Rainelle, W.Va., the son of the late John Edgar and Maggie Dwyer Gillespie. He was a member of the Jesus Church in Clendenin, and was a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Gillespie.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Stevers, and Linda French, both of Bland; two sisters, Judy Williams of Ballard, W.Va., and Stella Plummer of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
