Margaret Josephine Snow Sayers
Margaret Josephine Snow Sayers, 73, of Speedwell, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in the Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard Collins. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery.
She was a daughter of the late Andy H. and Maude Crigger Snow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. Sayers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence Jr. and Patsy R. Sayers of Speedwell; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and John Reed of Max Meadows; two special grandsons, Rusty Sayers and Rocky Sayers, both of Speedwell; special friends, John and Zona Jones of Max Meadows, Gladys Mulkey, Bob Bralley, Rita Copenhaver, Blanch McAllister, all of Speedwell, and Thelma Ward of Rural Retreat; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Roy Edward Crigger
Roy Edward Crigger, 67, of Route 4, Wytheville, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Layell. Interment will be in the New Bethel cemetery. The American Legion Post No. 229 will conduct military graveside rites.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and was the son of the late Krenning and Aldia Shelton Crigger.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Tate Crigger of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Donald Wilson of Rural Retreat; a son, Terry Lee Crigger of Wytheville; a sister, Elizabeth Dolly Sylvester of Wytheville; four brothers, Robert Crigger, Worley Crigger, Randolph Crigger, all of Wytheville, and Ellis Crigger of Rural Retreat; and six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Mary L. Holston Hale
Mary L. Holston Hale, 93, of Bayville, N.J. formerly of Rural Retreat, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Buddy Stowers and the Rev. David Michael Honaker officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Community Church cemetery (The Crawfish Valley) in Rural Retreat.
She was born in Rural Retreat, a daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Shupe Holston. She was a resident of Kearny, N.J. for many years prior to moving to Bayville, N.J. in 1994. She was employed as an inspector at Haward Corp. in North Arlington, N.J. for 18 years and was a member of the Grace Methodist Church in Kearny, N.J.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Myrtle Musser in 1980.
Survivor include six daughters, Edith H. Bean of Parsippany, N.J., Merle Testa of Bayville, N.J., Irene Buchanan of Beachwood, N.J., Thelma Logan of Bayville, N.J., Glenda Archer of Stafford and Rita Ballantyne of Kearny, N.J.; two sisters, Rosa Lee Fisher, and Vergie Jones, both of Rural Retreat; 17 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Jan. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home.

Dennis Gale Shewey, 43, of Gaithersburg, Md., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 1:30 p.m. at the DeVol Funeral Home, East Deer Park Dr., Gaithersburg, Md., with the Rev. Will Shewey officiating. Interment will follow in Gaithersburg, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Shewey of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Scott Shewey of Gaithersburg, Md.; his father, Bill Shewey of Wytheville; his mother, Lucill Shewey of Marion; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Raymond Ratcliffe of Dublin; a niece Jennifer Nunley; and cousins, Will Shewey, Ella Higginbotham, Sandra Fisher and Debbie Krejci.

Larry Dickerson "Dick" Coley, 68, of Route 1, Austinville, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Crockett officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late William Henry and Lillie Dunford Coley and attended Baker's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Davis and Mae Lee Coley; and three brothers, Barton Coley, Harold Cole and Alfred Coley.
Survivors include seven sisters, Sally Coleman of Max Meadows, Ruth Holliday of Alexandria, Mildred Sevelle of Blacksburg, Annabelle Arnold of Fries, Irene Hanks of Route 1, Max Meadows, Arlie White of Route 4, Hillsville, and Sue Lanter of Marietta, Ga.; four brothers, Charles Coley and David Coley, both of Route 1, Max Meadows, Jesse Coley and Paul Coley, both of Route 3, Wytheville; a special friend, Terry White; and several nieces and nephews.

Fred Baker Dunford
Fred Baker Dunford, 86, of Route 1, Draper, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Piney Community, Wythe County, with the Rev. Juddie Peyton of Bedford, Indiana, and the Rev. H.D. Sawyer of Christiansburg officiating. Interment followed in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.
He was born in the Laswell section of Wythe County on Jan. 7, 1912, to the late Charles McTeer Dunford and Sarah Frances Akers Dunford. He spent his boyhood in the western part of Wythe County known as Piney. In 1939, he married
Ruby Graham of Austinville. He played baseball with the Piney Tigers from 1931 to 1933 for the Industrial League which included the industries of Virginia Maid Hosiery, Pulaski Glass Plant, Coleman Furniture Company and Pulaski Veneer Plant. In 1933 it was reported in the Southwest Times that he had been "hitting .429 consistently" for the Pulaski Veneer Plant. He also played with the Tri-County League, the town of Roxbury, Pa., the New River League and the CCC Camps which had joined during the Depression. It was while he was playing with the New River League that he suffered a near-fatal injury in an automobile accident which left him partially paralyzed and ended his baseball career. He also played the guitar and wrote poetry. One of his poems was published in 1997 by the National Library of Poetry in "A Moment to Reflect." He was a member of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Piney and also attended the Gospel Tabernacle and the Church of the Nazarene, Pulaski. He spoke at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church and the Gospel Tabernacle, as well as on the radio in the 1950's. He was a member of the Plumbers' and Steamfitters' Local No. 491 (Roanoke) and was employed at various construction sites in Virginia and surrounding states. He was retired in 1974 from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna, in 1973; and a grandson, Sean Keating; and his brother, Curtis Dunford.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruby Graham Dunford; a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Nancy Dunford of Dublin; three daughters and a son-in-law, Jean and Terrence Keating of Wilmington, N.C., Rebecca Dale Myers of Roanoke, and Judy Rice of Pulaski; four grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.

Estell Harvey Earhart
Estell Harvey Earhart, 78, of Wytheville died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Carl Pauley. Interment was in the West End cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Leedy of Willow Grove, Pa.; one brother, Henry Earhart of Owings Mills, Md.; special friends, Margaret Sawyers of Wytheville, Chamler and Ola Mae Chandler of Rural Retreat, and Loyd and Ruth Sawyers of Wytheville; and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Jabe Showalter Ferguson Jr.
Jabe Showalter Ferguson Jr., 70, of Route 3, Narrows, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998.
Masonic memorial service conducted by the Intermont Lodge No. 269 will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. at Riffe's Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery, Narrows, with graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 68 and the VFW Post No. 6000.
A native of Roanoke, he had made his home in Narrows for the past 30 years. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars for service in World War II and Korea, having served with 51st Armored Infantry Regiment, Co. "B" 4th Armored Division in Europe and the 780th Field Artillery Battalion in Korea. He was a retired employee of the Celanese Plant at Narrows, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post No. 6000 and the American Legion Post No. 68, and the Intermont Lodge No. 269 A.F. & A.M., all of Narrows, the Royal Arch Masons No. 29, Pearisburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jabe S. and Anna Vernon Booth Ferguson; and a son, Jabe S. Ferguson III.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Rice Ferguson; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Stefan D. Bechtel of Charlottesville; a daughter-in-law, Louise Grubb Ferguson of Rural Retreat; and three grandchildren, Adam Fralin Bechtel and Lilly Anne Bechtel of Charlottesville, and Kellie Nicole Ferguson of Rural Retreat.

William Carl Gilman, 67, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, in the Roanoke Rehab Center.

He is survived by his mother, Laura E. Gilman of Wytheville; three daughters, Phyllis Dunford of Wytheville, Faye Hill and Mary Peters, both of Bristol; three sons, Gerald Gilman of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Ronnie Gilman of Bristol, Tenn., and Mike Faulks of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Kenneth Wayne Gilman of Wytheville; and 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ann L. James, 83, of Roanoke, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998.

She was retired from the Institute for Defense Analysis. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her sisters, Emily J. Williams of Shawsville and Regina J. Jungels of Roanoke; a sister-in-law, Emily H. James of Phoenix, Ariz.; nieces, Joanne V. Bess of Boise, Idaho, Johanna J. Duncan of Santa Rosa, Calif., Laura J. Fryberg of Portland, Ore., and Emily J. Williams of Shawsville; nephews, Charles F. Vaught of Anniston, Ala., Robert J. Vaught of North Wilkesboro, N.C., Robert H. James and David James, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Norman T. Miller, 42, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Discovery United Methodist Church, Richmond.
He was a 1975 graduate of Northside High School and founded Capital Investors Insurance Co. in Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Miller.
Survivors include his daughter, Kristen Maria of Richmond; his father, Vaden H. Miller; a sister, Cheryl A. Miller of Bland; his brother and sister-in-law, Eric and Jane Saunders Miller of Montvale; and several nieces and nephews.

Clara Dalton Peak, 93, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center, Salem.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. at the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Neil Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the Dalton Family cemetery, Pulaski County.
She was born in Carroll County on March 13, 1904, and was a daughter of the late Garland and Sarah B. Dalton.
She was preceded in death by her two sons, husband, three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include one daughter, Laura Reynolds of Draper; one brother, Bill Dalton of Pulaski; and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
