Leo V. Patterson

Leo V. Patterson, 92, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Leland Smith officiating. Interment will be private.

He was born in Durham, N.C., a son of the late Edwin Oliver and Lorena Holloway Patterson. He was the owner and operator of Betterway Laundry and Dry Cleaning and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where he served as superintendent of Sunday school, vestry man and choir member for many years. He was the oldest member of Wytheville Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an avid golfer, a musician, and a member of American Contract Bridge League for more than 20 years.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ellen Avey Patterson.

Survivors include his wife, Clarice W. Patterson of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. James E. and Fairfax Patterson, John Avey Patterson, all of Marion, and Fredrick Bruce and Shelly Patterson of Bristol; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Sparger, Jeannie Conner, Jim Patterson Jr., John Patterson, Richard Patterson, Caroline Patterson, Joe Patterson, and Elizabeth Patterson; four great-grandchildren, Adam Sparger, Claire Anderson, Hunter Anderson, and James "Jay" Patterson III; a sister-in-law, Virginia Patterson of Wytheville; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 17, from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the St. John's Episcopal Church in the Logan Room, or at the residence at any time.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church.

Dorothy Dunford Thompson

Dorothy Dunford Thompson, 80, of Altamont, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at her home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 14, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with Ray S. Wallace officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill cemetery.

She was born July 9, 1917 in Welch, W.Va., a daughter of the late Poague and Oma Akers Dunford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Given Thompson, in 1995; a daughter, Nina Thompson; seven brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (Pauline) King of Covington; a son, John David Thompson of Covington; three grandchildren, William David King, Mrs. Joe (Stacey) Corbett, both of Covington, and Katherine King of Charlottesville; one great-grandson, Devin Corbett of Covington; two sisters, Betty Miller, and Mrs. Harry (Edith) Boerner, both of Covington; two brothers, Jack Dunford, and Fred Dunford, both of Covington; an aunt, Edith Coleman of Wytheville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Arritt Funeral Home in Covington was in charge of the arrangements.

Evelyn O'Dean Akers

Evelyn O'Dean Akers, 70, of Austinville, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. at the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Don Frazier and the Rev. Lucille Bond officiating. Interment followed in the Charity cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Maggie Viars Gravely. She was a member of the Barren Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by three children, Dorothy Mae Akers, Barbara Jean Akers, and Jimmy Leon Akers.

Survivors include her husband, Claude Wesley Akers of the home; one daughter, Debra Buchanan Akers of Max Meadows; six sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Ray and Elizabeth Akers of Pulaski, Bobby Joe and Eva Akers of Max Meadows, Jackie and Robin Akers of Dublin, Claude S. and Rhonda Akers of Max Meadows, Elvin Akers of Craigsville, and William Lee Akers of Max Meadows; four sisters, Edith Viars of Dublin, Nellie Viars of Barren Springs, Kathern Powell of Greenville, Tenn., and the Rev. Lucille Bond of Sylvatus; three brothers, Jessie "Baker" Gravely and Kern Gravely, both of Galax, and Lathern Gravely of Dublin; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lawrence Carl Corvin

Lawrence Carl Corvin, 70, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Layell, the Rev. Clayton Hounshell and Sherman Dixon. Interment was in the New Bethel cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his son, Roger Lee Corvin; and his parents, Osborne and Pearl Groseclose Corvin, and Kathryn Gray Corvin.

Survivors include his wife, Martha McAllister Corvin of Wytheville; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Michael F. Smith of Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry W. and Kay P. Corvin of Rural Retreat, and Thimothy G. and Nancy R. Corvin of Blacksburg; six grandchildren, Heather Smith and Corie Smith, both of Wytheville, Kerri Corvin and Carla Corvin, both of Rural Retreat, Tyler Corvin and Kelley Corvin, both of Blacksburg; and a brother, James D. Groseclose of Fairfax, Vt.

Flowers will be appreciated or the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the New Bethel cemetery Fund, Route 4, Box 300, Wytheville, VA 24382.

Mildred Coburn Gibson

Mildred Coburn Gibson, 76, of Rocky Gap, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in Kegley Manor in Bastian.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at the Laurel Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Skaggs officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill cemetery in Bastian.

She was born in Rocky Gap on Nov. 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Jim and Maggie Coburn. She was a member of the Laurel Fork Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mack Coburn and Marvin Coburn; and one sister, Pauline Coburn.

Survivors include her husband, James Luther Gibson; one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Bub Radford of Bland; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Sue Gibson of Rocky Gap, John and Brenda Gibson of Bastian, and Jerry Gibson of the home; two sisters, Helen Puckett of Saline, Mich. and Bess Tiller of Rocky Gap; two brothers, James Coburn of Chantilly and Jack Coburn of Narrows; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Ruth Richardson of Anawalt, W.Va. and Mattie Dodson of Bluefield, W.Va.

The family requests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Bland County Rescue Squad.

Margaret Hall

Margaret Hall, 73, of Wytheville, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Graveside service will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. at the West End cemetery with the Rev. Stephen Tilley officiating.

She was born in Spriggs, W.Va., a daughter of the late Earnest and Bessie Jackson Hall and formerly attended the Fellowship Baptist Church.

She is survived by a brother, William Hall of Wytheville; a sister, Mary Sue Funk of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10 a.m. until service time at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Joe Louis Patterson

Joe Louis Patterson, 62, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Shelley Kyle officiating. Interment will follow in the Murpheysville cemetery in Rural Retreat.

He was born in Rural Retreat a son of the late Mack and Tennie Hawkins Patterson. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was a retired postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago, Ill.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha M. Patterson of the home; two stepsons, Billy Joe McVane and Wayne McVane, both of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Josephine Patterson of Wytheville and Maggie Woodard of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, Gene Patterson of Toledo, Ohio; two step-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Barnett Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Nettie Smith Poole

Nettie Smith Poole, 94, of Wytheville, died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Mitchell cemetery.

She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late William Edward and Melissa Jane Copybarger Smith. She was a member of the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church, White Toppers and Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Ray Poole.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Irene Poole and Grover Repass of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold Edward and Katherine Price Poole of Brookhaven, Pa.; two sisters, Mildred Smith Coe and Mary Smith Callahan, both of Wytheville; and eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Walter Preston Bowers

Walter Preston "Tom" Bowers, 45, of Ivanhoe, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Joseph Harrison officiating. Interment followed in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Samuel P. "Pat" and Margaret Elizabeth Williams Bowers. He attended Austinville Pentecostal Holiness Church and was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin "Duck" Bowers.

Survivors include three sisters, Freida Sue and Bob Sparks of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Patsy and Ralph Mattox Jr. of Richmond, and Betty and Doug Delby of Route 3, Wytheville; four brothers, Howard "Pud" and Juanita Williams of Bumpass, Samuel P. "Sam" Jr. and Faye Bowers of Belvedere, S.C., David "Jack" and Pat Bowers of Galax, Tech. Sgt. Kenneth S. and Jackie Bowers of Yigo, Guam; a special friend, Rita White; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis Irene Calease Dirks

Phyllis Irene Calease Dirks, 75, of Zapata, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 3 p.m. Interment will be at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa.

She was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Rockford, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd John Dirks, in November 1971.

Survivors include her children, Robert L. and Bobbie Landreth Dirks of Wytheville, Lee Dirks of Frederick, Md., Greg Dirks of Catlin, Ill., and Marsha Jacobson of Waterloo, Iowa; a sister Cecil Walters of Rockford, Iowa; a brother, Lawrence Calease of Greene, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dustin Todd Ellis

Dustin Todd Ellis, 9, of Glen Burnie, Md. and formerly of Salisbury, Md., died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury, Md.

He attended fourth grade at Overlook Elementary School in Linthicum, Md. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing video games.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Tonya Ellis-Broseker and Gary Broseker of Glen Burnie, Md.; his father and stepmother, Todd and Julie Hawkins of Elkridge, Md.; a brother, Hunter Broseker of Glen Burnie, Md.; maternal grandparents, Steve and Wanda Ellis of Delmar, Md.; maternal great-grandparents, Walter and Hilda Shockley of Ivanhoe; maternal great-great-grandfather, Joel Rayne of Willards, Md.; stepgrandparents, Gary and Karen Broseker of Pasadena, Md.; paternal grandparents, Don and Sandra Dickerson of Staunton, and Bill Hawkins of Hampton; aunts and uncles, Stephen and Erin Ellis of Salisbury, Md., Albert and Cheryl Davis of Rosenburg, Texas, Andy and Carole Anne Shockley, Mark and Penny Shockley, all of Ivanhoe, David Shockley of Park City, Utah; several cousins and many friends.

Contributions may be made in memory of Dustin Todd Ellis to Overlook Elementary School, c/o Dr. Baltimore, Hampton Road, Linthicum, MD 21090.

Nellie G. Leonard

Nellie G. Leonard, 91, of Chilhowie and formerly of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Groseclose.

She was a member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat.

She is survived by special friends, Richard E. and Eva Horne Sr. of Chilhowie; and several other relatives.
