Arlie Elizabeth Lundy

Arlie Elizabeth Lundy, 89, of Wytheville, Va., formerly of the Suiter section of Bland County, Va., died Sunday, June 2, 2002.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, at 2 p.m. in the Newberry Funeral Home, Bland, Va., with the Rev. Doug Hyndrich officiating. Interment will be in the Lundy Family cemetery in the Suiter section of Bland County, Va.

Born at White Top, Va., on April 8, 1913, she had worked for Tultex.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Lundy; her parents, James Harrison and Sarah Hamm Roope; two sons, John Lundy and James Lundy; two brothers, Luther Roope and Les Roope; and two sisters, Pearlie Roope and Irene Roope.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Judith Lundy of Bastian, Va., Al and Betty Lundy of Forsythe, Ga., Jack and Bonnie Lundy of Bastian, Va., and George Lundy of Bastian, Va.; two daughters and son-in-law, Betty Knollman of Hopewell, Va., and Jane and Roy Smith of Wytheville, Va.; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and one sister, Janie Barnett of Danville, Va.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home.

David Wayne Nester

David Wayne Nester, 24, of Galax, Va., died Monday, May 6, 2002, at the Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, Va.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 10, at 1:30 p.m. at Full Gospel Revival Center with the Rev. Sam Kinzer, Brother David Farmer and Brother Bill Yonce officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Lebanon cemetery.

He was born in Galax, Va., on April 14, 1978.

He is survived his mother, Janice Faye Robinson Nester of Galax, Va.; his father, Hassell Dean Nester of Pulaski, Va.; a sister, Denise "Ann" Nester of Galax, Va.; five half brothers; maternal grandmother, Lena Robinson of Woodlawn, Va.; paternal grandfather, Chalmer C. Nester of Barren Springs, Va.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gayle McPeak Manuel

Gayle McPeak Manuel, 65, of Pulaski, Va., died Thursday, May 30, 2002, in the Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg, Va.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 3, at 4 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski, Va., with Brother Richard Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery, Pulaski, Va.

She was born in Wythe County, Va., on Feb. 14, 1937, a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Gladys Gray Rose McPeak. She was a retired employee of Jefferson Mills, Pulaski, Va., with 32 years of service. She was an avid gardener.

She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Isom of Woodlawn, Va., and Carolyn Gilchrist of Pulaski, Va.; two sons, Michael Manuel of Pulaski, Va., and Daniel Manuel of Draper, Va.; four sisters, Joyce Grubb of Wytheville, Va., Ruth Sizemore of Woodlawn, Va., Wanda Little of Madisonville, Tenn., and Peggy Augustine of Franklin, Tenn.; one brother, Staley McPeak of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and special friends, Mary Alice Brandon and Louise Fitzgerald.

Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski, Va., is in charge of the arrangements.

Jeremy Randolph Wright

Jeremy Randolph Wright, 20, of Wytheville, Va., died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at his home.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Wytheville, Va., with Pastor Steve Ridenhour officiating. Internment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Church cemetery.

He was born Feb. 8, 1982, and graduated from George Wythe High School in 2000 where he was a member of the tennis team. He was a student at Wytheville Community College and a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Helen Johnstone.

Survivors include his parents, Randy and Janet Wright of Wytheville, Va.; a sister, Amy Wright of Wytheville, Va.; grandparents, the Rev. Glenn R. and Nannie Wright of Wytheville, Va.; and many other relatives and friends.

Those who choose to do so may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

Barry Lynn Simmerman

Dr. Barry Lynn Simmerman, D.D.S., 46, of Cordova, Tenn., died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Methodist North Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 26, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel, Wytheville, Va., with the Rev. Dr. Don Stansell officiating. Interment will be in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat, Va.

He was born in Marion, Va., and was a general dentist in private practice.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kelly J. Simmerman Jr. of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Dr. Steve J. Simmerman of Memphis, Tenn.; and his grandmothers, Audrey Umberger Simmerman and Lota Dix Copenhaver, both of Wytheville, Va.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home.

The family suggests that memorials be sent to the Special Olympics.

Buford Marshall Taylor

Buford Marshall Taylor, 87, of Ivanhoe, Va., died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, in Asbury Center at Birdmont, Wytheville, Va.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 20, at 11 a.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe, Va., with the Rev. Rance Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows cemetery, Ivanhoe, Va.

He was retired from the National Carbide Company and a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. and Annie Taylor; two daughters, Della Mae Taylor and Anita Taylor Dubach; one brother and two sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelva Jean Gravley of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Carolyn June Gwynn of Galax, Va.; three sisters, Leona Hartley of Ashtabula, Ohio, Donna Williams of Wytheville, Va., and Geneva Groseclose of Ivanhoe, Va.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, July 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fairview United Methodist Church in Ivanhoe, Va.

Mary Bonnie Smith

Mary Bonnie Smith, 65, of Rural Retreat, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at her home.

Private graveside services will be held Thursday, Jan. 15, in the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery conducted by Rev. Doug Stuart.

She was a daughter of the late William Ray and Elizabeth Testerman.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Carrie Nuckolls and Lucille Sayers; and a brother, Peanut Testerman.

Survivors include her husband, Herman Ross Smith of Rural Retreat; a daughter, Robin Kincer of Rural Retreat; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Cheryle Kincer, Tracey and Virginia Kincer, Victor Kincer, and Rocky Smith, all of Rural Retreat; two stepchildren, Junior Smith, and Linda Smith, both of Ohio; a sister, Marie Rosenbaum of Cripple Creek; two brothers, Robert J. "Uncle Bob" Testerman of Pennsylvania, and H.H. Testerman of Florida; two grandchildren, Luke Kincer, and Stacie Kincer, both of Rural Retreat; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Speedwell United Methodist Church cemetery Fund.

Harlan Gray Sparrow Jr.

Harlan Gray Sparrow Jr., 83, of Pawley's Island, S.C., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, in a Georgetown hospital after an illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Florence, S.C. Burial followed in Mount Hope cemetery.

He was born in Washington, N.C., a son of the late Harlan G. Sparrow Sr., and Clara Wright Sparrow. He was graduated from Florence High School and attended the University of South Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, 1532nd Ordinance Division, 5th Army. He was the retired owner of Palmetto State Lumber Company. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Lawson Raines Sunday school class.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Ballentine Thomas Sparrow of the home; two daughters, Marjorie S. Dillard, and Mae Parker Sparrow, both of Columbia, S.C.; two sons, Harlan Gray Sparrow III of Columbia, S.C., and Richard Riley Sparrow of Anderson, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan T. Britt of Greensboro, N.C.; three stepsons, John Kirkland Thomas of Saudie Arabia, Hugh B. Thomas of Charleston, S.C., and Robert B. Thomas of Lugoff, S.C.; a sister, Betsie S. Riley of Darlington, S.C.; 13 grandchildren, Harlan Gray Sparrow IV, Jane-Erie Willis Sparrow, Hillary Lancaster Sparrow, Thomas L. Dillard, William C. Dillard Jr., Mace Thomas, Kelly Thomas Week, Jennie Thomas, Elizabeth Britt Carruthers, Charles Robin Britt Jr., David Thomas Britt, Hugh Ballentine Thomas Jr., Brannon Thomas; and one great-grandson, Sutton Carruthers.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina at Florence, 2350 W. Lucas, Florence, SC 29501; or to the First Presbyterian Church Building fund, 700 Park Ave., Florence, SC 29501.

Willie Wayne Taylor

Willie Wayne Taylor, 84, of Pulaski, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, in the Highland Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel in Bland with the Rev. Joe Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland cemetery.

He was born in Bland County, a son of the late Joseph Cicero and Cora Combs Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rivenbark Taylor of Pulaski; two daughters, Billie J. Hare of Pulaski, and Linda J. Parah of Radford; two sons, Loyd C. Taylor of Stafford, and Jerry W. Taylor of Mechanicsville, Md.; one sister, Pearl T. Hill of Richmond; a brother, Charlie Lee Taylor of Bland; and 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Olen Augusta Dunford

Olen Augusta Dunford, 62, of Rural Retreat, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church conducted by Father J. Ven Ilano. Interment will be in the West End cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Cindy Lester Dunford of Rural Retreat; special-daughter, Sheri Corvin Scott of Wytheville; special-son, Staff Sgt. Greg Corvin of Parris Island, S.C.; two sisters, Faye D. Parks of Richmond, and Betty D. Dingus of Salem; two brothers, Charles Dunford of Wytheville, and Lindburg Dunford of Richmond; a special-grandson, Gary Lee Scott; and several nieces and nephews.

Flowers will be appreciated, however memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 525 W. Main St., Wytheville, VA 24382.

Clarence Early "Bo" Jones, 74, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, in the Arbor Medical Center in Seminole, Fla., after a long illness.

Graveside services were held Thursday, Jan. 8, at Florida National cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

He was born Feb. 17, 1923, in Speedwell.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Cress Jones of Pinellas Park, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Mary Bowie of Pinellas Park, Fla., Pat Bowen of Frostproof, Fla., and Kay Signoralli of Seminole, Fla.; one stepson, Richard Duncan of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Lois J. Ogle of Marion; and one brother, Harry F. Jones of Chattanooga, Tenn.

J.D. Matney, 59, of Wytheville, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1998, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Carl Pauley. Interment will be in the Mount Mitchell United Methodist Church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Willis H. Matney of Wytheville; four sons and daughters-in-law, James C. and Kimberly Matney of Wytheville, Darryl J. Matney of Columbus, Ohio, Mark E. and Barbara Matney of Texas, and Charles W. and Belinda Matney of Rural Retreat; five sisters, Elsie Crouse of Slate Creek, Mildred Tage of Richlands, Diana Bomar of Wytheville, Addie Lee Gee of Indiana, and Gertrude Whitaker of Wytheville; a brother and sister-in-law, A.C. and Scocia Matney of Wytheville; and four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Sunday, Jan. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grubb Funeral Home, or at the home at Star Route, Wytheville, at anytime.
