Barbara Lynn Kegley Sutphin
Barbara Lynn Kegley Sutphin, 52, of Pearisburg died Friday, Nov. 7, 1997, in the Roanoke Memorial Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. at the Pearisburg Baptist Church with Rev. H. Gray Smith officiating. Entombment followed in the Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg.
She was born on Sept. 11, 1945, in Wythe County, a daughter of the late E. Clayton Kegley and Bonnie Webb Kegley Flinchum of Wytheville. She was also a teacher's aide in the Giles County Public Schools and a member of Pearisburg Baptist Church.
She is survived by her mother; her husband, Quentin O'Dell Sutphin Jr. of Pearisburg; one son, Quentin O'Dell "Trey" Sutphin III of Evansville, Ind.; one daughter and son-in-law, Gina Sutphin and Jerry Dunnavant of Roanoke; one grandson, Britton C. Dunnavant; one granddaughter, Kellen O. Dunnavant; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Nancy K. and Gary Connier of Christiansburg, and Renee F. Lange of Roanoke.

Rebecca Eastridge Boardwine
Rebecca "Becky" Eastridge Boardwine, 82, of Eden, N.C., died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Family Worship Center in Preston, with the Rev. Michael Turner, Rev. Eugene Broome and Rev. Jack Foley officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View cemetery in Ridgeway. The body will be taken the church Wednesday at noon.
She was born in Washington County Aug. 16, 1915, to the late Thomas and Elizabeth C. Henderson Eastridge. She was retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting and attended Family Worship Center in Preston, and New Beginning Baptist Church in Eden, N. C.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bury H. Boardwine on Sept. 15, 1993; one son, James Kenneth Boardwine; five sisters, Mary Eastridge, Roxie Woods, Ollie McCraken, Ellen Perkins and Beulah Hubbard; and three brothers, Thomas Eastridge, Fowler Eastridge, and John "Mutt" Eastridge.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth C. "Penny" Snody of Eden, N.C., and Lovella V. Guinn of Ridgeway; one son, Donald "Donnie" D. Boardwine of Ridgeway; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

William Joseph Hodge
William Joseph "Joe" Hodge, 61, of Dublin, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Reese Funeral Chapel in Austinville with the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Christian Church cemetery.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Robert and Virginia Ayers Hodge and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Freda Elsie Peak Hodge; a son, Jeffery Hodge; and a granddaughter, Tiffany Renee Roseberry.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Dreama and Victor Oliver of Mifflin Co., Pa, Terry and Jerry Proffitt of Pulaski, Jenny and Mike Oliver of Dublin, and Melissa and William Summers of Pulaski; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Charlotte Hodge of Christiansburg, and Dale and Rose Hodge of Pulaski; four sisters, Mae Akers of Barren Springs, Janie Martin of Sylvatus, Faye Cook of Pulaski, and Carolyn Viars of Barren Springs; three brothers, Richard Hodge, Ben Hodge, and David Hodge, all of Barren Springs; and 13 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren also survive.

Carl E. Jenkins
Carl E. Jenkins, Lt. Col. (Ret.), U.S. Army, died Thursday, Nov. 6, 1997, at home in Casper, Wyo., after a long battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held Monday, Nov. 10, with private inurnment at the Oregon Trail State Veteran's cemetery.
Jenkins was born in Grayson County to Hiram M. and Laura (Roberts) Haga Jenkins. Jenkins earned a B.S. degree in Geology from Berea College, Berea, Ky., and a master's degree in Geology from the University of Wyoming. Jenkins worked as a geologist for Sinclair Oil and Tenneco. From 1960, he was an independent geologist.
In addition to his wife, two daughters, a son, and their spouses, he is survived locally by a brother, Everett Kermit Haga of Rural Retreat; a nephew, Harold D. Haga of Daleville; and nieces, Johnny J. Hash of Troutdale, Cleta H. Roberts of Rural Retreat, and Brenda H. Mitchell of King George.
Emma Louise Akers Ratcliff
Emma Louise Akers Ratcliff, 62, of Route 3, Max Meadows, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, in the Edgemont Center, Wytheville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer, Caseknife Road, Pulaski, with the Rev. Dale Akers officiating. The body will be taken the church one hour prior to services.
Born July 3, 1935, in Pulaski County, she was a daughter of the late Garnie Berdine Akers and Audie Mae Taylor Akers. She attended the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer, Pulaski.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Coy Thomas Akers and Robert Raymond Akers.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Burton Ratcliff of Max Meadows; two sons, Robert Jeffery Ratcliff of Max Meadows and Paul Anthony Ratcliff of Wytheville; three sisters, Sadie Akers Turpin of Radford, Reba Alice Bratton of Pulaski, and Callie Akers Johnson, of Bluefield, W.Va.; and one brother, Charles Bruce Akers of Pulaski.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

Brenda Sue Umberger Robinson, 45, of Wytheville, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Robert Layell and the Rev. Tal Stanley. Interment will be in the Evergreen Church cemetery.
She was a school bus driver for the Wythe County Schools.
She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Umberger; and a sister, Mary Umberger.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Graham Robinson of Wytheville; two daughters and son-in-law, Renee and Sam Collins of Rural Retreat, and Kathy Lynn Robinson of Wytheville; one son, William Dale "Billy" Robinson of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Trevor John "T.J." Collins, Curtis Lee Collins, Ericka Dawn Collins, and Chelsea Lynn Collins; her mother, Emma Umberger of Wytheville; a sister and brother-in-law, Lena and Jess Crockett of Crockett; brother, William "Buster" Catron of Wytheville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Brenda Robinson of Bakersfield, Calif.; father- and mother-in-law, Roscoe and Margaret Robinson of Wytheville; special friends, Ernest and Louella Williams, Bill and Carol Sisk, Otis and Joanne Wilson, all of Wytheville; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Evelyn Joyce Umberger, 65, of Wytheville, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville with the Rev. Dr. Charles Burnette officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Raymond Varnell and Ethel Waddell Umberger. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Wilderness Road Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Wythe County Retired Teacher's Association, the Wythe County Historical Society, and past member of the American Association of University Women.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard V. "Scratch" Umberger; and a sister, Vivian Irene Umberger.
Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Frances Umberger and Thomas Irvin of Englewood, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Martha F. "Mrs. Scratch" Umberger of Wytheville; an uncle Worth B. Umberger of Radford; and several cousins and close friends.

Ina Lindamood Vaught, 81, of Wytheville, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 1997, in the Birdmont Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Burnette officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.
She was born in Rural Retreat, the daughter of the late Elbert Mason and Margaret Jane Dutton Lindamood, and the last surviving member of her family.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death be her husband, Edgar R. Vaught.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Vaught Foster of Maidens; a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Edna Vaught of Wytheville; four grandchildren and spouses, Eddie Vaught, Bradley and Katheryn Vaught, Dr. and Mrs. E. Michael Foster, and Susan Elizabeth Foster; and three great-grandchildren, Hannah Lofton Foster, Sarah Evelyn Foster, and Andrew Gabriel Foster.

Charles W. Whalen Sr., 80, of Willoughby, Ohio, formerly of Wythe County, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, in Painesville, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Irvan Marshall. Interment was in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens, Rural Retreat.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Marshall Whalen, of Willoughby, Ohio; seven sisters, Marie Cox, Eula Fielders, both of Rural Retreat, Gay Rash, Mae Lynch, Mary Lee Schrader, all of Speedwell, Gladys Page of Baltimore, Md., and Kathleen Walters of Wytheville; five brothers, Wade Whalen, John Whalen, both of Speedwell, J.R. Whalen of Rural Retreat, Rex Whalen of Wytheville, and Richard Whalen of Baltimore, Md.; two grandchildren, Nancy Lee Whalen of Cleveland, Ohio, and Noreen Lee Ann Whalen of Willoughby, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Noveda Randall Clippard, 94, of Stanley Total living Center in Stanley, N.C., died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. at the Alexis Baptist Church with Dr. Malcom Ivey officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Cherryville, N.C.
She was a native of Cherryville, N.C. She was a homemaker, seamstress, and former school teacher. She was also a member of Alexis Baptist Church where she had served as a Sunday school teacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Jonas and Willie Carpenter Randall; and a daughter, Thelma C. Bradshaw.
Survivors include three sons, Eural Clippard of Wytheville, Kerry Clippard of Alexis, N.C., and Fred "Buck" Clippard of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Anne Spargo of Stanley, N.C., Clara Keener of Iron Station, and Barbara Hare of High Point, N.C.; 19 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley, N.C.

Bessie Mae Kitts Ryan, 85, of Wytheville, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, in the Wythe County Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. at the St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Kale King officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John's Church cemetery.
She was born in Wythe County, a daughter of the late Stuart Bittle and Lillian Mae Callahan Kitts. She was a lifelong member of the St. John's Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanton Ryan; a son-in-law, Jerry Seagle; a granddaughter, Angie Keesling; three brothers, Dock Kitts, Emmett Kitts and Stuart Kitts; and two sisters, Mary Halsey and Sue Irvin.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Betsy and Jack Keesling of Kingsport, Tenn., and Phoebe Seagle of Wytheville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Joyce Ryan of Wytheville; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and four sisters, Frances Hudson of Max Meadows, Daisy Riggle of Wytheville, Gladys Porter, and Evelyn Mabe, both of Max Meadows.

John Andrew Umberger, 85, of Route 3, Wytheville, the Huddle Community, die Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, in Edgemont Center.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Carrico officiating.
He was born in Wythe County, a son of the late Thomas J. and Aurelia Murray Umberger and the last member of his family. He was a retired core drill operator with Southeast Diamond Drill Company. A member of the Huddle Memorial United Methodist Church, International Union of Operating Engineers of Roanoke, IVA Lodge No. 173, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a charter member of Big Walker Game and Fish Club.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter; one brother, Jack Umberger; five sisters, Esther Huddle, Gettys Early, Virginia Vaught, Ruth Justice and Mary Margaret Groseclose.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Virgie Fisher Umberger of the home; one daughter, Donna C. Umberger of Route 3, Wytheville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Lee and Barbara Umberger, James A. "Jimmy" and Kathleen Umberger, all of Route 3, Wytheville; and 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
